Netflix On TV Gets A Major Makeover

Around the world our members stream a lot of shows and movies onto their televisions, through a Smart TV app or through TV-connected devices such as game consoles, set-top boxes, and Blu-ray players. In fact, the majority of the more than one billion hours our members watch each month is done on a TV.

Today we are excited to unveil the biggest update in Netflix history to our TV experience. This update improves the Netflix TV for Netflix members around the world and for the first time extends rich features to platforms such as Roku, Smart TV and Blu-ray players as well as PlayStation and Xbox 360.

More than a year and half in the making, this new experience evolved through a process of design exploration, iteration and testing that extended throughout all parts of the Netflix TV experience. We set out to deliver an update that would make it even easier to discover something great to watch and we think we succeeded.

After starting Netflix, you’ll immediately notice the cinematic and rich visual experience. As you navigate, three large images for each show and movie provide much more context about a title. We also added a shorter, more descriptive synopsis as well as personalized information to provide more detail about why you should watch a specific title. This personalized information can be based on your social network, viewing history or taste preferences.

As you look at the details of a particular title, you’ll see a broader synopsis and more detail on the cast. For TV shows we have added a refined episode selector that uses images for each episode along with a synopsis.

Searching for something specific? Search is now much more visual, designed for use on TV screens and providing results for titles as well as for actors and directors.

Our popular section for kids also has the new design. The kids area also uses a subtle blue background and subtle “kids” label so parents see from a distance that kids are using the appropriate part of Netflix. This update also extends the kids experience to Roku and some Smart TVs for the first time.

A few other notable aspects of this major TV experience update:

  • Support for Netflix Profiles across all devices
  • Support for voice on Xbox 360
  • Support for pointer-based navigation on Smart TVs
  • A redesign of post-play, the feature that automatically starts the next episode of a TV show or shows recommendations after watching a movie

The updated Netflix TV experience rolls out globally beginning on Nov. 13 and will take about two weeks to reach all devices. The update will go to devices including PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Roku 3, and new and future Smart TVs and Blu-Ray players. In addition, some recent Smart TVs and Blu-Ray players may receive this based on manufacturer’s update plans. Additional devices, including other Roku boxes, will be added at a later date.

We hope you enjoy the update. For us, this has been one of our biggest and most exciting projects and we are thrilled to finally share it with you!

Netflix on Xbox 360 now has “People Search”

The recent Netflix update for Xbox 360 didn’t just add the“Just for Kids” section, it also included a new feature we call “People Search.”

Search is an important part of the Netflix experience and we are working hard to make it better. People Search is an example of that. When entering text in the search box using the controller or Kinect, Netflix on Xbox now not only presents relevant TV shows and movies, but also actors and directors.

For example, type “nic” and you will see relevant results for TV shows and movies as well as people, including Nicolas Cage, among others.

To see all titles available to watch instantly with Nicolas Cage, simply select Nicolas Cage and they are presented in a simple list view.

We are excited to bring this feature, already popular on our website and PS3, to the Xbox. Use it to find more TV shows and movies with your favorite actors! People Search will come to other platforms in the future.

Netflix “Just for Kids” Arrives on Xbox 360

I'm very happy to announce Netflix "Just for Kids" is now available on Xbox 360. When you go to Netflix on your Xbox, you will now have the option to go into a section designed especially for kids 12 and under, or the regular Netflix experience.

Whether you are a kid in age or a kid at heart, you will love Just for Kids, designed specifically for kids with content appropriate for those 12 and under.

My kids spend a lot of time on the Xbox and my wife and I are very careful with the games we allow them to play on it. The same can be said of shows and movies, my kids just aren't ready for most of the shows out there.

With Netflix Just for Kids it's easy for my kids and yours alike to stay in a safe area for their television viewing when using Xbox 360. Parents, you can unleash your kids in this section of Netflix and not worry about titles that could be inappropriate. As always, there are no commercials on Netflix.

Our "Just for Kids" section is popular on the Web site, Nintendo Wii, Apple TV and PS3, we are sure it will also be a hit on Xbox 360.

We hope you and your enjoy Just for Kids as much as mine do and stay tuned for more Just for Kids news.

Today’s Netflix Update for Xbox 360

If you’re one of our many members who instantly watch TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix with an Xbox 360, you may have noticed an update to the Netflix application on your Xbox today. The update includes a number of new features and enhancements to the Netflix experience on Xbox:

Updates:
  • Skip Forward/Skip Back functions during play allow you to move through movies quickly and move between TV episodes easily
  • Zoom function during play lets you enlarge letterboxed video content to full screen
  • Better color contrast, making colors more vivid and black more pure.
  • If you’re a member in Canada, Latin America, the UK or Ireland, we have also created more opportunities to share TV shows and movies in the connected world and for you to discover more great stuff to watch through your friends. Members that have connected with their Facebook friends on Netflix can now see what their friends have watched and rated on Netflix.

In addition, we have made it easier to decide what you want to share with your Facebook friends when enjoying Netflix on your Xbox:

  • Single sign on with cloud profile makes it easier to enjoy Netflix on another Xbox 360, wherever you are. For example when visiting a friend’s house you can use their Xbox 360 with Netflix after signing on with your Xbox LIVE credentials
How do you get the new application?
If you already use Netflix on your Xbox 360, you will automatically receive the new Netflix features the next time you access the application and download the update - If you have not previously downloaded the Netflix application on Xbox 360, you can simply download it from the Xbox LIVE Apps Marketplace

A few notes:
  • An Xbox LIVE Gold membership, Netflix unlimited streaming membership and a high-speed Internet connection are required to stream TV Shows and movies from Netflix on Xbox 360
  • Kinect for Xbox 360 is required to use voice and gesture control

Netflix Unveils New Xbox Experience

Here at Netflix we love the Xbox 360. Since November 2008 our members have instantly watched millions of hours of TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix via their Xbox. Today I am excited to share two big announcements about Netflix on Xbox!

First, today we are launching our new Netflix experience. This application has been redesigned from the ground up based on all that we have learned and includes a number of great new features:

- A better browse experience with significantly more titles available for browsing and up to 3 times more titles available on screen to choose from at any given time. You really get a sense of the depth of movies and TV shows available with a simple and elegant interface optimized for TV

- A richer play experience that includes access to audio and subtitle settings, ratings capability, episode selection, and related title suggestions while you play for a more integrated experience

- Deep support for voice and gesture control using Xbox Kinect for browsing and play functions (Confession: we really like to lean back on the couch and use the voice commands while we watch!)

- Adaptive streaming that constantly optimizes your picture quality while you watch based on your current bandwidth

- Support for 720p HD (bandwidth allowing) and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound so movies and TV shows streaming from Netflix look and sound great!

Second, we are pleased to announce that Netflix on Xbox 360 is now available in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia as Xbox Gold LIVE is now available in these territories. We are happy that our members in Latin America can now use this rich platform to instantly watch movies and TV shows from Netflix on their TVs. And, with the new features above, they can enjoy the updated experience today!

How do you get the new application?

- If you already instantly watch via your Xbox 360, you will automatically receive the new Netflix application when you install Microsoft's new Xbox update released on Dec. 6.

- If you have not previously downloaded the Netflix app on Xbox 360, download the app for free from the Xbox Marketplace following completion of the Microsoft Xbox update

A few notes:

- Xbox Gold LIVE, a Netflix unlimited streaming membership and a high-speed internet connection are required to stream Netflix on Xbox

- Xbox Kinect is required to use voice and gesture control features

- As with other apps on Xbox, voice control with Kinect is not yet available in Portuguese
