Nope, we're phasing out that page. For the moment, you're right, the infrastructure still exists -- and frankly, you can still get to the old page (we've just removed links to it). But eventually (no dates yet), we'll clear out the page. I understand the need for a page like that, and before it's killed i'm pretty sure we'll figure out some solution for your particular problem.

Can you still rename friends and if so, how? The friends that I renamed still stand so it's clear the architecture exists for this.

Just to give you some insight into why this is important to me I have multiple friends with the same first name. On the friends page it gives the first name in a large bold font.

I don't instigate simply to get a rise out of people. There are always those who either will not talk about stuff, or cannot find the words. Sometimes a little nudge does wonders.

Anyway… I am off to play with the new features myself. So far its looking quite nice and should prove to be interesting to say the least.

I never had the impression that this was about expanding privacy. It was about not losing the level or privacy that Netflix had offered all along. Perhaps if you were not so intent on being the instigator that you so clearly pride yourself on being, you might have seen that.

I do know instigators. I do not care for people who wish only to "get a rise out of people" rather than discus and debate for actual knowledge rather than just to bait. That just isn't productive.

As to other questions raised by other posters: No I have not looked at my ranking or friends of friends. I couldn't care less about ranking, and it would be pretty hypocritical of me to have marked myself private and then go looking at friends of friends.

I do agree with 2mcabre on one thing, I have had enough of this thread. Reading the refusal (on both sides) to accept difference of opinion is brain splitting, and the outright contempt by one side in particular just makes me feel bad.

The string of letters and numbers mean no more to me now than they ever did, and I think no less of those that have no Netflix friends or faves, I SWEAR. I notice some correlation between influence rank and length of time as a member, which makes sense, but since my friend's rank is in the 300,000's and I know her to be a fabulously smart woman with great taste in movies mine in the 7,000s makes me feel pretty darn good! Sorry you're not playing. Come on in, the water's fine.

What does everyone think of the updates? Have you looked at your rank yet? Have you been disappointed by your rank? ;)

How many of you have added someone to your faves? How many have you added?

Anyone check out their friends' friends yet? I have, even though I marked myself as private so my friends' friends don't see me.

How do you all feel about the subnav changes? So far it hasn't bothered me but I'm still wondering how we'll be able to delete or rename friends (yes, I know I've asked this before, but I haven't received an answer yet, even if the answer is "you can't").

This is why poignant and well thought out discussions are not easy to accomplish in an on-line print forum.

If we had this same discussion face to face there would be other bits of information glommed from the live format.

Facial expressions (grins, smiles, twinkles in the eyes, etc) sound of persons voice (amused, stressed, angry)…

None of which truly translate well into written forums, no matter how hard you try.

When folks get to know me they figure out really fast that I am somewhat of an instigator, I have a sometimes dry sense of humor, but above all I enjoy learning new things.

I still haven't learned anything from this thread.

I DO GET IT, certain folks want to maintain the same level of privacy they had before.

Just because I GET THAT, doesn't mean I understand the reasoning behind it.

THAT is all I have been trying to cipher out of all this. Ultimately.

Question: "What could be such in someones life that they would need expanded privacy on a site where you rent movies?" Answer: "Just because." Like all my teachers et al have said in the past "Because is not an answer."

To date nobody has provided any valid educational material to help those of us who might like to "understand" do so.

I get it just fine. But you left something out. Along with movie ratings anyone who fails to mark themselves private also reveals their friends, and friends of friends, etc. You are saying "that's all" and yet you are not telling the whole story. There is a post on another thread about why this could be problematic. Again, I have chosen the privacy option so it isn't an issue for me at this point.

I have already expressed my appreciation for the steps that Netflix has taken. I am okay with it. You are the one who keeps harping about it . What's the big deal? People think differently than you, and Netflix is doing their best to accommodate both sides yet you keep being obnoxious to people who don't see things exactly the way you do. Pardon me, but this was in response to the person (you?) who was insisting that those who want privacy provide example of real life events to back up their request. This had nothing to do with information that can be found on Netflix. Take up the issue with whoever thinks telling about such things to people like you (people who have NOTHING to do with Netflix policy and procedure) is necessary, because I never said that I was that important, but apparently someone else thinks so - of me everyone else who does not want you in our rental history.

There's been a lot of comparison to facebook and myspace here, some of it by myself. But there's a somewhat unrelated example in which lack of concern for privacy has resulted in something almost everyone hates: spam.

If people and businesses had treated email addresses as private information from the beginning, there wouldn't be spam. But many people, including some who will closely guard their phone numbers, give out their email address like the time of day. And far too many companies see their customers' email addresses as commodities they can sell or trade. The result is that now well over 50% of all email on the internet is spam.

My point is that even if certain things don't seem like they need to be secret, it's probably best to err on the side of privacy, or at least maintain the option for those who want to.
