Anyone who was paying attention to the economy and to the business chat knew that a price hike would come to Netflix. I do not feel that the price increase was unreasonable. Even with that price increase, I still don’t know how Netflix can afford to run services with the level of quality I already enjoy. I use some of the free and cheaper services and I don’t like ads nor clunky search screens that try to drive me to the gutter end of media.

My viewing tastes in movies are not mainstream either. Yes, I enjoy seeing new movies, but I joined Netflix especially to find TV series and movies that are not mainstream, and are off the grid for a variety of reasons. I have had a fascinating time watching the obscure, foreign, rare, under-distributed and beautiful films that I find using eccentric search patterns. I wonder if the majority even realize the wealth of material in the catalog?

I hope that Netflix can appease the masses who fund the service but probably don’t care about the incredible variety and want a nearly free deal, so I can continue to enjoy the larger experience that is possible through Netflix.

I do not object to the streaming quality. It's not always great, but again I think it's ok for the price. Those who complain about your flash playback quality should take a moment to read all of the complaints that flash generates on other services. What you can do is improve the Netcast search, allow me to work on my DVD queue from Netcast, and allow me to support two different search/suggestion profiles in my account, since my wife and I want to emphasize different criteria. I would also like to have manual dpi quality adjustment for the stream because without that, I have a hard time playing movies over hotel Wi-Fi.

I used to drop $50 to $150 at a time for British and classic DVD productions. I haven't done that for a long long time.

Where can I email or online chat with Netflix cust...

Where can I email or online chat with Netflix customer service. Most people do not care how you structure. One month the charge on the credit card statement is $8.99 and the next month it is $15.99. Such a leap in price is a shock to the system in a bad economy. Splitting into two companies is both inconvenient and adds salt to the wound. At least Apple did something about its iPhone antenna problem. I costed then money, but kept most of their customers. You just say i am sorry and this is the right thing to do. I just forgot to tell you. With the stock value down and millions of customers leaving, I would think you would rethink and incrementally raise the price rather than doubling it. For a company that has made so many good decisions throughout its history, I would hope you would be able to recognize how bad the price hike decision is.

Some feedback from a customer's perspective.
...

Some feedback from a customer's perspective.

1) Almost doubling the price for a package of services in one go is just plain dumb and bad business practice. If you must increase prices, you do so as you add features and services, and you do it over time. You don't maintain one business model (as the dual streaming/DVD service had been for many months) and then essentially split them and charge almost the original price for each.

2) You did not offer any warning to customers beforehand. A letter stating concerns about the viability of the two business models months before as a prewarning would have told many what was going on, preparing them for the change. Instead it was "hey, times are tough, we're doubling your price but providing no guaranteed increase in service."

3) You did not offer OPTIONS. Do you understand that many of your streaming customers would prefer to have streaming only, and only have the minimal DVD service because sometimes YOU can not offer a movie they really want in streaming? The mail-in DVD for us is not a separate service, it is a backup, and insurance policy, and in my case one very rarely used. Heck, I think I've paid you folks money every month for this option, and I have maybe rented ONE DVD using that option. And now you want to charge me almost double for that insurance. Well done!

Had NetFlix increased the streaming only service price by, say, 25-50%, and then offered an add-on 'backup DVD' service for a nominal amount it would have made sense. Instead, you charge the same price for each service whether someone is DVD only, streaming only, or both. Wow, that was a decision of Einsteinian proportions. I'm already a Hulu subscriber, but again, I consider that a backup to Netflix.

Frankly, Mr. Hastings still does not get it, at least not in the case of this particular consumer. His statements below continue to show a lack of understanding of the objections of many Netflix customers I believe. I'm just an engineer, but I apparently have more sense than your corporate management.

I dumped cable TV COMPLETELY because they were making similar decisions to this. Get it? They kept raising the rates and giving me things I didn't want but without really providing better options. So take a deep breath, and go back and look at your pricing model again with the above thoughts in mind. Otherwise, I and many others will continue to take a hard look at other options out there.

just a few thoughts:

Napster, Nesquik or both?)
- you are unethically (although I assume legally) handling the credit card information of those who chose both the DVD and the streaming services, who will now be billed by two different entities
- the letter refers to the Qwikster website without mentioning any changes to the Netflix website
- it is also arrogant to expect customers to go further and look for a "longer explanation" on the blog. Anything (and everything) that needed to be said should have been said on this letter.
- taking advantage of the opportunity to include games among the services provided by Qwikster sounds like a failed attempt to "detour" attention from what was a strategic mistake. I was very happy with the old setup where I got to chose a genre and then could browse sub-genres and see large lists of titles on the full screen. You changed it today to use a set of horizontal lineups with only whatever sub-genre the system thought I wanted, which is frustrating because my wife's choices then make it hard for me to find my movies. Please change it back, it was way way more browsing friendly.

I have to live on Social Security. That left Netflix. And now with your price increase, I cannot afford it either. 60% increase?!!!!! For the silly selection of one and two star trash movies?! Now you are in the company of names like Exxon. Charter. Dish. AT&T. I am dropping Netflix. I enjoy hearing everyone recognize this for what it is: greed. I look forward to seeing you fail. Considering pulling my membership due to this combination.

Another thing...why do you not give customers the option to E-mail customer service requests/comments? I really don't want to spend 20 minutes on the phone waiting to submit a comment. I wanted to let you know that the audio quality on most of your instant stream selections is TERRIBLE. It's so bad that my family had to use subtitles for a movie we watched recently to understand what was going on. It's not our device because the audio on regular DVD's plays fine. Something really should be done about that!!
