I guess over the past couple of months, the email-help has changed to yet another corporate-minded call center.

Since Netflix started, I grew to enjoy the email channel to contact customer service. I always heard back in a very ample time, and was happy with that.

Now I see a 800 number. Maybe the email help is still on here (the website) but it is buried so deep I can't find it anywhere. There is this tail-chasing set-up where you end up where you started.

Growing pains? Some idiot MBA / relative of the owners got into the mix and f'ed everything up in hopes of making it like every other wanker internet business.

Something is going wrong on here and I hope doesn't go public and get bought up and then totally transformed into another faceless, greedy piece of crap.

It has been my observation that a healthy percentage of members are clueless to what 'helpful' or 'not helpful' is supposed to mean. They seem to equate the terms to 'I agree' or "I don't agree' with the reviewers take on a movie versus the context in which that opinion is expressed. Opposite opinions does not make either reviewer a 'not helpful' entity necessarily. One should save this type of mentality for a forum thread discourse... "I liked it, if you didn't, bring it!" For this general assumption, the help/not helpful component can become a statistical urination match with diminished value.IMHO.

These people that say they have "rated" 20,000 titles - baloney! I don't believe it. Do the math. That's TWO unique titles a day, every single day, for 25 years. Nobody is seeing two unique films a day for 25 years. Come on! I mean up until 1985 or so you really couldn't rent movies anyway.

I agree with most comments. I believe that hard work (meaning writing reviews) should count heavier for ranking, not only the number of movies you've rated. I have over 640 reviews which are a hobby of mine a a pleasure to write, but time consuming nevertheless. I am currently ranked #61 and there are people ranked above me that haven't contributed with a third of that amount. Film Grrrl agrees that "not interested" ratings (sic) should be ignored in the ranking algorithm. Add genre ratings to the Ignore list. The # of films rated should have a minor effect on rankings. The big factors? (not in order) 1) "Helpful" votes on reviews (not # of reviews. This is not the Field of Dreams -- write them and they will come.) "Not helpful" should count against "helpfuls". 2) # of Friends and Faves. 3) # of page views of your reviews, profile, etc. 4) # of people adding films from your lists or reviews. 5) # of notes you send or receive.

I did a personal test on reviewer rank -

I added a new profile (queue)
I rated each and every genre and sub-genre 5 stars. rank = 3,000,000 or so.

I added 16 random favorites and rated 300 movies. rank = around 2,000,000

I made no lists and wrote no reviews. My rated movies went to 600 after a couple weeks and I even got a few fans. rank = 750,000

Next I rated as 5 stars all the 5 star favorite films of my random faves, adding 2500 or so 5 star ratings to my list.
And then I got inspired and picked a random genre (faith and spirituality) and rated each and every item in there (about 2500) as Not Interested. total "rated" movies = 5600 and rank = 11,700

This week I started with the genre "TV" and rated 1500 more as Not Interested. rank = 4,700 !!

I guess my point could be that ratings of "Not Interested" should be listed separately and should also not be included in the algorithm programs that determine "reviewer rank"

I am one who has marked a number of films "not interested", and I don't think they need to go toward my "rank--influence" number. I didn't watch them, rate them, or review them. Seems fair.

I understand that the Masses probably rent the crap out of popular New Releases right when they are released. But to have them appear on a SO CALLED most Rented ever at Netflix list about a month after release! Just a little hard to beleive that it would just soar over popular movies that have been out for multiple years.

It also bothers me when people review films that have not come out yet (unless there was a screening and the person actually saw the movie). To be honest I sometimes flag said reviews if they don't review anything. "I can't wait to see this movie" is definately not a review and should not be in the page.

Somewhat on the topic of "top ranking" reviewers, can Netflix possibly consider only allowing people to rate movies that have actually been finished and released? You know...stuff that really exists?

While searching for the Young Indy dvd sets I noticed that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which won't be released until May and is STILL IN PRODUCTION, has already been rated 197 times. I know, I should be open to the possibility that some eager viewers used psychic mind science to travel into the future and ask themselves how much they enjoyed the Movie of Tomorrow.

It gets an average of 4.5 stars, in case you were wondering.
