Netflix On Android Gets Profiles And Better Search

Over the weekend we released a new version of the Netflix app for Android-powered phones and tablets, making the experience more personalized and improving search..

This new release supports Netflix Profiles, personalizing Netflix for you and everyone in your household. We will ask you who is watching when you first start the app, or you can switch profiles from the left navigation drawer. New profiles can be added on the Netflix Web site.

We have also enhanced the search experience so you can search for your favorite actor or director. You can also search for subjects, think “ice hockey”, “vampire”, or “Italy”.

The update is available now on Google Play.

This Month’s Pick for Families: To Grandmother’s House We Go

I’m a working mom of two little kids and I couldn’t imagine living without Netflix. Honestly. It was true even before I started working here. I love curling up on the couch with my kids tucked under each arm, but I also love the fact that Netflix sometimes helps me keep the house running smoothly…if you know what I mean.

So if you enjoy watching TV shows and movies on Netflix as much as my family does, then I hope you’ll like this blog series. Every month we’ll be posting “This Month’s Picks for Families” to give you some ideas that should fit into your family’s routine that month. And we’ll also include some craft or recipe ideas, but don’t worry we’ll keep them realistic and practical.

Our first blog post is full of ideas for the Holiday. Some will get your family in the festive spirit, some are perfect for pre-plane waiting time and some will take you down memory lane yourself. In case you hadn’t thought of taking your Netflix with you wherever you spend your holidays, it’s really simple. Just download our free app on your Smartphone or tablet and enjoy your trip over the river and through the woods.

Here are some of your kids’ favorite characters - Holiday style:

If you make it through this list, we have even more holiday favorites here.

December usually means a lot more time out and about, which can be a recipe for cranky kids and cranky parents. So we asked recipe expert Alejandra Ramos to create a Chocolate Candy Cane Smoothie for us…just don’t tell your kids it’s actually packed with protein. Learn how to make your own.

And I love this idea from former Parenting Magazine editor Kelly Ladd on how to create your own Lego travel box. Learn how to make your own.

On behalf of our team at Netflix, I wish you all a safe and happy Holiday season.

Netherlands Tops Netflix ISP Speed Index

We have just added November data to the “Netflix ISP Speed Index,” our monthly update on which Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide the best Netflix streaming experience. With this update, we also added the Netherlands to our rankings.

We launched Netflix in the Netherlands three months ago and have always known that the Dutch have great broadband. That's now confirmed by the Netflix ISP Speed Index: with a country average of 3.16Mbps the Netherlands takes a firm lead compared to the other nations in the index. No other country crosses 3Mbps, but runners up Sweden and Denmark come close with 2.83Mbps and 2.8Mbps, respectively.

Looking at the bottom rankings, Mexico ranks last, just below Ireland and the US.

The Netflix ISP Speed Index is based on data from the more than 40 million Netflix members who view over 1 billion hours of TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix each month. The listed speeds reflect the average performance of all Netflix streams on each ISP's network and are an indicator of the performance typically experienced across all users on an ISP network. A faster network generally means a better picture quality, quicker start times and fewer interruptions.

Note: the average performance is below the peak performance due to many factors including the variety of encodes Netflix uses to deliver the TV shows and movies as well as the variety of devices members use and home network conditions. These factors cancel out when comparing across ISPs.

Below is our current ranking of US ISPs.
