Celebrate the Spirit of International Sports with Captivating Documentaries on Netflix

With competition about to reach a fever pitch in London, try taking a bit of a different, deeper look at the sports of the summer games with these terrific documentaries available to watch now on Netflix.

Over his fifty-year career, legendary Duke track and field coach Al Buehler has influenced the careers and minds of some of America’s most talented athletes – including Olympians Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Carl Lewis, and Joan Benoit. “Starting at the Finish Line: The Coach Buehler Story” profiles this beloved coach, who also courageously supported diversity in the Atlantic Coast Conference during a controversial time in American history.

Not all racing events are measured in mere seconds…or even minutes. “Spirit of the Marathon” dives deep into the history and background of the event that entices both amateur runners and professional athletes alike to the venerated Chicago race. And if 26.2 miles still feels a bit short, try “Running the Sahara” – the profile of the international three-man team that attempts a remarkable traversal of this great desert on foot.

Most elite young gymnasts spend their childhoods drilling dismounts and dive rolls, striving for the highest levels of competition. But for two teenage gymnasts preparing for the Mass Games of the late Kim Jong Il’s North Korea in “A State of Mind,” physical training is just one part of regimented life behind the iron curtain. This summer, North Korea will not be sending any gymnasts to London and will instead look to its athletes in other events to bring home medals and national pride.

While sailing events this summer will take place off the coast of the United Kingdom, the controversial Sunday Times’ Golden Globe Race of 1968 tasked solo participants with a slightly longer course. “Deep Water” (from the documentary filmmakers of “Touching the Void”) chronicles the voyage of headstrong amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, who set off forty years ago with eight other sailors on this first round-the-world race of its kind…but never finished his journey.

Whether called “soccer” or “football,” it is one of the world’s most universally-beloved sports. “Pelada” introduces us to players from many countries and walks of life, for whom all that’s needed are a ball and ready teammates. Focusing on one unique competition in particular, “Kicking It” profiles six of the dispossessed soccer players from around the world who are preparing for the Fourth Annual Homeless World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.

Whatever sport is your passion and whichever nation you root for, we hope that you enjoy these and other fantastic sports documentaries available on Netflix!
