Temporary Removal of Sony Movies through StarzPlay

Hi, Pauline Fischer, VP of Content Acquisition, here. You may have noticed that Sony movies through StarzPlay are not currently available to watch instantly. This is the result of a temporary contract issue between Sony and Starz and, while these two valued partners work through their differences, we hope you are enjoying the wide variety of new movies and TV shows added daily. In the next few weeks, look for great movie titles like The Fighter, Skyline and Iron Man 2 as well as the first four seasons of Mad Men, all to watch instantly.

  1. Will the old website interface come back when the Sony movies do?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Give us back the ability to add DVDs from our streaming devices, stop hating your customers and making their life harder than it has to be.

    ReplyDelete
  3. How about dropping the rest of the Starz movies too. They are universally horrible looking. When I see the Starz logo show up, I just hit stop. It's not worth the pain.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Is this why the selection has become so limited? When we had the disk, our options were not so limited. Movies we once watched on demand are no longer available. My 8 year old says, "They should let us watch what we want to watch, not these lame movies." Hoping the selection improves soon!

  5. So... when is the Wonder Years coming? You know, the one you promised back in April?

  6. Since 5000 complaints about the new interface is the limit, let me add it here.
    The new interface SUCKS.
I might be switching my membership if you guys dont take our dissatisfaction seriously

  7. You've already taken away the ability to find streaming movies with the new UI. Why not just remove the ability to watch movies altogether? My monthly subscription just became a monthly donation to Netflix.

Has someone lost control of the wheel at Netflix? Everything was going so well, and now the company seems to be falling apart.

  8. I like the new interface, it works, which is helpful. Before I had quite a few problems. That said, I will not have much use for Netflix without Starz content, particularly given the new programming Starz is producing like Torchwood. Hopefully this can be resolved quickly. My kids love the Disney content. It would be a shame to see that go too.

  9. Anonymous 4's comments are hilarious! I get a better laugh out of genius remarks like that than I do out of half the comedy I've downloaded! Yeah, I'm really upset about the changes, and I've just been a member for a month. I loved reading the reviews, got a kick out of the times I began getting a "hit" where I'd bump into a reviever expressing the same views again, adding them to my "Favorite Reviewers" list. All gone now. I'll be gone, too, once I get my final month's worth....

  10. I only have one major problem with instant watching and it is that you guys take down movies whenever you like. It is not just during a contract dispute like now either. Sometimes you give a heads up that a title is going to expire, but a lot of the times you do not. I do not see why you cannot just avoid publishing something to be viewed instantly unless you are sure that you will not have to take it down before a specific time.

  12. Honestly, the redesign wouldn't be so bad if they hadn't removed SORTING, something that is integral to a movie site. It's just pathetic. It's like if a Library didn't have a system to find and sort books. Absolute lunacy.

Not to mention the excruciatingly slow scrolling. Do you people not want us to watch what we want? Just the "top" movies as decided by Netflix? Little too Orwellian for my tastes. "HERE WATCH THIS!!! IT'S GOOD, WE PROMISE!!!"

  15. No complaints here about the web UI or missing features... who cares really? I do care about the encode quality and the Starz content is HORRIBLE. Seriously, please kill this deal or at least let us filter out the Starz content. My eyes.... they bleed....

    ReplyDelete
  16. We hate the new website layout. You took away sorting, ratings, and titles. You are removing functionality without connecting with your customers. It is obvious that you are not reading the blog. Way to run a business. Good bye Netflix hello Hulu.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Reverse site changes or add ones that don't look like they were written be devry alumni.

  18. Please make this the default view for streaming: http://www.netflix.com/WiHome?fcld=true

  19. What about the over 5,000 user comments critical of the new interface? Are you ever going to respond to our complaints? Your silence comes across as a great 'fuck you' to your subscribers.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah with all the talk of them wanting to move people away from streaming, removing the ability to add movies to a queue from mobile devices seems designed to keep people away from DVDs.

Can't figure out exactly which way Netflix is trying to jerk us.

Whatever we did, we displeased them. I will be sacrificing a child to Chemosh weekly until the gods are happy with us.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Gee, I'd like to watch some of that new content you mention, but your new streaming UI is so nausea-inducing, I think I'll have to skip trying to find it.

It is a delight to see your stock getting pummeled again today. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I came back to this blog in the hopes to find an apology, or at least a better explanation, about the new UI.

Instead I encounter a post about removing more features and even movies.

I can't wait to see what else what you come up with next week!

  23. This has nothing to do with the Starz/Sony issue, but since Pauline is the VP of product acquisition, and there does not seem to be any other way to communicate product suggestions to Netflix, may I suggest that Neflix get the British TV series, "Outnumbered" (and add a link for submitting suggestions)?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Please bring back to old website interface!! It's extremely difficult for me (and my wife) to navigate around the new site. We find it very difficult to browse and look around for movies.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Deteriorating service. Deteriorating interface. Netflix must be tired of turning profits. They are surely working hard to destroy their customer base.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is just another indication that Netflix is not able to provide enough quality instant content. Hollywood and other film studios are trying to slow the huge demand for instant viewing therefore Netflix can't add the really good movies to instant. The recent "new look" of the instant website was just a way to direct traffic to the "Browse DVDs" section, where by the way you can still sort and see your ratings right away.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yes, I'm amazed. 5000 replies on the original blog post about ruining the web UI, over 300 on the subsequent post about removing a majority of the review functionally.... Yet no comment.

I keep getting told time and time and time again that Netflix is a feedback driven company.

    PROVE IT.

    ReplyDelete
  28. And still Netflix ignores all of our comments. Keep ignoring your customers, great idea. You lost a lot of business, your stocks took a huge drop, and to top it all off. You're getting sued! I love it. Keep digging your own holes there Netflix

  29. Hi,

I would like to ask Pauline Fischer, VP of Content Acquisition when (Netflix) is going to have rights or to have film called "Serbian Scars" with Michael Madsen and Mark Dacascos available so I can see it?

    Thanks,
    Mike

  32. I have been a member for several years now and I have to be honest your new look is a UGLY UGLY UGLY way of Netflix. Before my 3 and 4 yr old could watch and manage what they wanted on our PS3. Now it is just insanely hard. Go back to the way it was or Hulu is looking better. I love you guys but this is like a " KICK IN THE BALL SAC FROM A RUNNING START". Don't loose customers give customers what they want. Oh and I am so tired of going to a video store and sign says we have it but Netflix don't i think i pay enough for you guys to have it.

  33. Netflix announces the end of "Queues" in favor of "spontaneous discovery." -- The latest updated to the Netflix web site eliminates Queues, a once popular feature that no longer serves a useful purpose. "It's easier to scroll and then pick something at random to view instantly. Putting it in your queue for later . . . well that's not instant, is it?" remarked company spokesman, Dick Urcustmer.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh Netflix, how you spit in our face. I don't know why I didn't see this when it was originally written, but it disgusts me just the same:

    http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/06/10/netflix-changes-interface/

"Steve Swasey, vice president of corporate communicates at Netflix, says he’s well familiar with the user backlash. “Most of [the comments] have the same theme, which is ‘what was wrong with before?’ What we’re saying is we’ve tested this extensively, we know the vast, vast majority of people like this. It’s new, it’s easier, it’s cleaner.” When questioned about whether Netflix is planning on keeping the new interface despite the negative response, Swasey said, “Absolutely. We made it and tested it and researched it and tried it out and everywhere we tried it, it had a better reception. Otherwise we wouldn’t have made the change.”"

Yep. I'm sure you really focused on REAL user responses. Show me more than 5000+ people who LIKE the interface. Do it. PROVE that you tested more than 5000.

And then explain why WE can't have the old interface? EXPLAIN why you won't do that. Sheesh.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If we really must stick with the new watch instantly interface could we at least see some improvements to address the major problems?

First, add back the display of star ratings below the movie. Its very useful to be able to glance at a row of movies and see the ratings without having to hover the mouse over them. Netflix spent so much time and energy developing and promoting the rating system that I can't understand why you would want to hide it away (unless you know you're only going to have crappy movies left on Instant Play in the future).

Give us some better way to control the speed of horizontal scrolling, especially to make it FASTER. Slowly scrolling through a conga-line of movies is a waste of your customers time.

And please, for the love of God, scale the movie pictures size with the size of the user's screen. Trying to find anything on Netflix with a laptop or small screen has become a huge chore now. I thought your business model was built on keeping your customers engaged with a constant stream of content, not driving us away to easier to use sites like Hulu, Amazon or Apple.

Communicate with us here, Netflix, don't make us rage and hate you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. To every asshole in here who wants the old interface....GET OVER IT. IT'S NOT COMING BACK. GO AWAY AND STOP WHINING.

    ReplyDelete
  37. To Brent, Nick and the rest of you trolls who hate the new interface...I got an idea for you, if you don't like it, LEAVE. It's pretty simple. You're paying money to a company for a service you don't like, why continue to pay money for it? You're whining about an interface because YOU don't understand it, then leave. That's all you have to do. Save yourself (and the rest of us who can care less) the aggravation and energy you're putting into a completely lost cause.

    ReplyDelete
  38. New interface is still horrid . Can not seem to get used to it at all !. Also , dont understand the interest in Koren programs. Hulu has the same problem with to much Korean programs . I would highly suggest way more BBC programs and more Australian /New Zealand TV. And better CBC programs , Canada has some good TV out there but rarley get to see it here
StarzPlay usualyly is some broad low quality stuff so , i dont care a bit about StarzPlay stuff and really dont get what StarzPlay even means

see how much trust i have in you nf!

  44. So, Netflix is supposed to listen to 5,000 WHINING CRYBABY members out of 23.5 million about the stupid interface, which is not even 1% of the membership base. That makes a LOT of sense!

  45. I need to start watching my instant queue... it's at 379 movies, and I never have time to watch them outside of my Disc rentals. Pretty soon, I won't be able to watch them at all, at this rate.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Why don't you guys add international acclaimed movies like "Black Cat White Cat" and "Underground"?

Adding crap in streaming won't help get you more customers.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I use your watch instantly section a lot and like many other of the commentators feel like I've watched most of your offerings, at least the ones that are interesting to me.

I can't wait for this service to be more universal.

There are a lot of old movies that I often look for and can't find available on demand. Do you have a suggestion box for movies we want to see on demand?

    ReplyDelete
  48. 5000 negative comments (and probably double that by now if blogger.com allowed more) is a significant number. Consider that (1) most people don't bother to complain about it even though they may not like it much, (2) many people don't know where to go to complain, (3) some people don't even know they can complain. Consider how fast these comments came in, the number of complaints on Twitter and Facebook, and the various new articles, plus one Huffington Post article that had a poll where 57% disliked the new interface. I would say that probably at least 10 or 15 million dislike the new website (the rest are just unaware or just like the big pretty pictures), and you're not going to see those numbers in the number of comments in some obscure blog post. In fact, I would like to see someone demo the old and new interfaces side by side to me and show me how the new one is actually any better or easier to use.

  51. Netflix is going to be a model for ineptitude very soon. This is what happens when you get "too big to fail", eh Netflix? No way with 23 million customers that you could go wrong?

Maybe, but I think not. You have three blog entries for June, each informing of something that went away. In not one has Netflix responded to the critics. Arrogance.

  52. Netflix...you're going to become Myspace if you don't listen to your customers.

Please return the sortable list. It was quick, efficient and very easy.. what you have now just takes too much time.

    Thanks.

  54. I used to recommend Netflix to everyone I know, but if the company can't even be bothered to reply to thousands of angry users, then the love affair is over. Ignoring this problem won't make it go away.

Sorry, Netflix, but you broke our hearts. Don't expect us to do anything but badmouth you in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Gerlinde your comment was well written and very polite!!

I don't think Netflix really gives a shit if you are nice or not.

  59. The new interface is HORRIBLE! What bizarro world made you go through the effort to change it?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sony sucks. I never buy anything from them and rarely like watching anything with their name on it. Now they are trying to blackmail Netflix? That only means I will have to pay more for my monthly subscription.

    F sony they suck!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Justin it has nothing to do with the new being better than the old, or the old being better than the new, c'mon guys. They are F'cking you over big time, it is all about money, competition, greed and mistakes.

Everyone needs to rise up and cancel their account now! They will not hear you otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  62. After a week, the new UI still sucks.

Netflix management says that the complainers are just people that can't deal with change. I am not someone that doesn't like change. I am an early adopter. I embrace change... when it improves things. Change for the sake of change is dumb. Change that makes things harder and removes functionality is moronic.

Adding insult to injury is not a good business practice.

Sorry I couldn't add this comment to the proper blog post. But I guess there were just too many complainers there so they closed comments at 5000. Damn whiners, can't stomach a little change.

    Blah.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I accidentally 5000 comments. Is that normal?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Just so you are all clear on the comment maximum issue, Netflix uses Blogger from Google. Google has a max of 5000 comments, because they probably thought 5000 would be a high enough number that no blog could ever reach that number, haha. Netflix does not have their own blog system.

Just take a minute now and compare Hulu's discussion boards... the difference is huge.

Why Netflix Subs Can’t Stream Sony Movies From Starz

    http://paidcontent.org/article/419-why-netflix-subs-cant-stream-sony-movies-from-starz-for-now/

    ReplyDelete
  66. From that article...

While it is possible that Sony and Starz simply work out their differences or that Netflix can offer Starz streaming to a subset of users (to reduce the streaming sub count) without a larger Starz/Netflix renegotiation, we believe a more likely scenario is that this impasse creates a catalyst to trigger an earlier renegotiation between Netflix and Starz (rather than wait until January 2012).

    ReplyDelete
  67. The new interface STINKS. Please show the star ratings, bring back sorting, the horizontal scrolling is AWFUL AWFUL, AWFUL!!!!. Going to check out HULU plus+.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I really dislike how slow this new interface is. I don't like that i have to hover over the edge and wait forever to scan through titles. Why have you made it more difficult to find interesting movies?

    ReplyDelete
  69. I am pretty sure this possibly turns Netflix into an un-profitable corporation real quick, unless they use even more aggressive accounting techniques.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I love you Netflix, I have been a customer since your early days. changing your UI without notice or like today I wanted to watch easy A and found out i could not watch it. (no i had to google you to find out what happened what happened to your excellent customer service from years past) PLEASE PLEASE let your customers know whats going on.
BTW is there a manual on how to use the new watch instantly page or at least a how to section?

    ReplyDelete
  71. The new website is horrible. Bring the old website back or I WILL CANCEL!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  72. I've been a member of Netflix since 2004. I've seen really good changes, but lately, a lot of bad changes.

The new interface really sucks, I really liked the sortable list to find new movies. But I am really bored with the pickings of instant view movies, there's maybe one diamond in the rough off all the bad ones.

And now the removal of Sony Movies? What's going on here? You raise the price but not the quality of your products? I may have to reconsider my long-term commitment to your company. I'll give you a year, if you don't give me bang for my buck, I may say good bye for good.

    ReplyDelete
  73. First off, to those who are posting insulting messages about the fact that many current customers are complaining, many of us would prefer to remain with Netflix if they would only provide the old interface as an option. We view that as preferred solution for all. Ultimately, we will take our business elsewhere; however, that is a massively suboptimal solution for both us and Netflix.

To Netflix, especially, Steve Swasey, what kind of rocket scientist does it take to figure out that the customers do the final acceptance testing? The Edsel was based on more customer surveys and testing than any other vehicle of the time. The testing Ford did was extensive; however, the product was pure crud.

Steve-o: Customer testing tells a company what customers *might* like. Customer response and purchasing decisions tell a company what customers *do* like.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Sucks to hear about Sony, but really can you guys make Sony Blu-Ray Netflix better HD quality and it least add Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1? And as others complaining about UI I do not like it either even though I just signed up to Netflix. When it comes searching on Blu-Ray could you please add where I can see the list of movies alphabetical? As I said before I am a new costumer andI have been enjoying Netflix but if you want more people sign up for streaming movies you need to improve sound quality and picture quality and one last thing please do not remove features that the customer likes.

  81. @johnsonstephenmJune 17, 2011 at 6:40 PM

Hey guys, the new design is clean. the functionality, however, is not. remember this is a library and not a some kind of picture gallery. searching for movies has always left many things to be desired (ie. new arrivals vs new releases), but at least the old "view all" and "view list" buttons helped. People want new first... even within genres. You guys have got to sit down and work on how we, the people paying you, can find stuff on your site... ask Blockbuster what happens when customers move on... if you can get anyone to answer at their abandoned HQ in north texas. Speaking of which, I think I saw a Redbox up the street...

  82. I to am posting my hatred for the new look here since you won't allow anymore comments. It gives me a headache trying to watch these oversized images scroll across the screen. You guys are doing a great job; there's a reason the majority of streaming video on the Web comes from Netflix.

  85. 5,000 comments about the new interface and you are still ignoring us? Then lets fill up this post as well! IT SUCKS!!! We pay for it, listen to our thoughts! We hate this new set up and they way you are slowly stripping every unique feature. PLEASE LET THE OLD INTERFACE COME BACK!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. that's some bs. we pay to watch instantly and not only do we get older lame movies but the newer ones get removed??? thinking of cancelling my subscription I don't even see the point anymore. At least redbox has new movies...you don't have to wait much for them and it's only $1.

  88. How do I view a list of the top rated movies? Since the site changed I can't find that anywhere and it's making me angry. And why is there no place to email a question? I don't want to phone support, that's stupid. I hate call centers.

  91. Why,why, why are you guys soooo lame!!! Why cnat you guys just stream everything and stop dicking around. Every time I go to see if there's a TV sieries or movie on instant it's not, Failsauce to the extreme!!! Why is it that you have half the origal shows from USA network on instant but not the good ones. You what think im going to Hulu plus...at least they have something to watch!!!

  92. Fuck Steve Swasey and his stupid, arrogant comments to the media about how he doesn't give a damn (in so many words) whether there's an outcry about the UI or not.

Fuck you Swasey. WE pay the bills.

    ReplyDelete
  93. 5000+++ people are not pleased with the changes you made to the interface and none of you have bothered to address this. I have been a customer for 6 years and have recommended you guys to many people. But that will not happen again. I have been through many changes with your site and none have bothered/angered me like this has. I hate logging onto the site. I am not going to spend my money on you guys anymore. Your selection has gone to shit along with your site. You don't care about your customers, the people supplying your lively hood.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Wow! Netflix refuses to respond directly to our comments, and yet clearly has moderators monitoring them closely enough to be able to erase mine (and who knows how many others?) within seconds? This is getting real creepy.....

    ReplyDelete
  95. I tried once again to use the new interface. It makes me nauseous. I am just waiting another week until my billing cycle is over then cancelling. What a shame, I liked Netflix. Now I think you are a terrible company who doesn't give a crap about your paying customers. You are not getting another cent out of me.

Apparently they forgot to post this announcement:

NETFLIX AND FISHER-PRICE TEAM UP TO LAUNCH NEW STREAMING INTERFACE

Netflix, an online service that specializes in removing features from websites, today announced it has partnered with preschool toy manufacturer Fischer-Price to relaunch itself as the premier web video portal for young children.

"Billy really loves the new site," says Crystal Jones, mother of 3 year old Billy Jones. "He doesn't know what the movies are, but he loves to watch those big colorful pictures scroll by. It's really relaxing."

Michael Spiegelman, Netflix's head of feature removal, is enthusiastic about the changes in the site's target demographic. "Kids love it. It reminds them of Teletubbies," he says. "We've also gotten some really rave reviews from drunks, the functionally blind, and that unemployed hobo I paid to post in our comments thread."

When asked about whether some current users of the site might not appreciate the loss of functionality, Spiegelman replied "Screw those big crybabies. It's my website, I can do what I want! What are they going to do, quit and go to our competitors? Ha, we don't HAVE any competitors! Good luck with that!"

Jeff Bezos of Amazon could not be reached for comment at this time.

  98. I know you are trying to improve your margins.

But purposely screwing your customers is not going to work in the long run.

I don't like watching Ashton Kutcher garbage, and I'm insulted that your new interface doesn't give me a way to look for worthwhile content without scrolling through all the crap I have no interest in.

Mark my words: If you have a policy which says "screw the customers," you won't be around very long. Of course, maybe a few people at the top just want to cash out, and don't give a damm about anyone else. Wouldn't be the first time.

  100. LOL to the breaking news comment.

Unfortunately, I don't think the people who designed and approved the new interface have seen the teletubbies. At least that show has a sense of design. The new one is hard to look at, let alone to use!

This is the Netflix business number according to publicly available press releases on Netflix' site.

This is not a personal phone number. This is a way to reach him or his secretary to let him know you are angry with his arrogant comments.

This is the guy who said:

“Most of [the comments] have the same theme, which is ‘what was wrong with before?’ What we’re saying is we’ve tested this extensively, we know the vast, vast majority of people like this. It’s new, it’s easier, it’s cleaner.” When questioned about whether Netflix is planning on keeping the new interface despite the negative response, Swasey said, “Absolutely. We made it and tested it and researched it and tried it out and everywhere we tried it, it had a better reception. Otherwise we wouldn’t have made the change.”

So, basically he's dug his heels in the sand and won't change even if his paying customers demand it.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Exactly what "vast majority" is Steve Swasey talking about here?

He tested slightly more than half of the tens of millions of users, and each one gave their thumbs up before they rolled it out to everyone else?

He either suffers from a grammar deficiency, or he's just a corporate liar. I think it's the latter.

Oh and he also has a combover, google him.

    ReplyDelete
  103. How about changing the user interface back?? Or at least giving us the option to do so!?

  106. This new site is horrendous! Navigation is illogical, tedious and time consuming.
When I finish watching a movie and click back to browsing it takes me to the WRONG place. We should be taken directly to the just watched movies information page, so we can immediately rate and review what we just saw.
Also, the new movie thumbs are way too big, I cannot even get them to fit in my 22 inch monitor screen!
More, the side scrolling deal, is atrocious and clunky, it causes more problems than it fixes. Actually it doesn't really fix anything, it is just illogical to say the least!

  108. The 6/8 RevolutionJune 17, 2011 at 8:56 PM

It's becoming clear enough that Netflix doesn't give a damn about what we think. If they had any intention of restoring the lost functionality, they would have said something by now to soothe the angry masses.

So, it's time to take it to the streets. Metaphorically, that is. Keep posting comments here, sure, but also take it to your own blogs, your Facebook pages and Twitter accounts, and the various forums around the Net. Tell your friends Netflix sucks now. Our words are wasted on Netflix, so instead, tell it to the world.

From personal experience I can say that a lot of less tech savvy people are scratching their heads right now and going "What F!ck happened to Instant Play?" They don't see this blog, but they don't like what they do see, and they can be recruited to the fight if we spread the word in other, better venues.

  109. BRING BACK SORTABLE LISTS!!!

Come on, what is this all icon crap? Give us back the ability to select a genre and view it in a list format that we can sort on different columns (like release date, title, etc...)

As everyone reading this clearly knows, Netflix is not interesting at all in providing a user-functional interface to their video browsing and sorting! This utterly contemptible and useless interface presently provided is pushing users to discontinue their service, and we gratefully acknowledge the need to get away from any company that is clearly refusing to listen to cries of its customers! Now, as you have been reading, even more things are being unnecessarily removed. Time for all customers to find something else.

    ReplyDelete
  116. So you guys are just trying to go out of business or what can we get a response about fixing the new interface. Maybe if your heads didnt waste money on that useless redesing your stock would still be worth something. And you'd have the money to pay starz. you guys are just going to run customers away until your the next internet Holywood video arent you. Everyone have insurance on stock or something?

    ReplyDelete
  117. I'm kind of confused when people are complaining about "sorting" being removed. I have the 1 dvd and streaming plan, and genres are still listed.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I, for one (and I am obviously not alone), will no longer be part of this upper management debacle (cash grab, perhaps?).

It is obvious to me that the powers-that-be are facing pressures (contracts, market, etc) that are the sole cause of this continued devolution of a once grand streaming content design.

Instead of being bright enough and EMPATHETIC enough to formulate an elegant solution that has zero impact on the consumer (or, God forbid, an increase in service), they are making it harder than it has to be to "get theirs" and run off with the cash grab moola.

I feel sorry for the peon employees of Netflix that truly want to make the site everything they envisioned it to be. I can only imagine what their feelings of betrayal must amount to. Being in the shadow of a mountain can make a person feel very isolated and insignificant, especially after they emphatically devoted their lives to enable the summit journey of the very mountain that overshadows them.

Way to lose touch with reality, execs. Enjoy your fortunes.

I will not be giving you my money anymore. All it took was 2 weeks to ruin the last 5 years.

  121. @James Skemp

Totally agree. Netflix is, in a word, awesome. I can;t believe people are upset to the point of threatening cancellation (though not doing it) because of layout. Mind you everyone, this will improve. They need to work out kinks.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Tell Michael Spiegelman his new website interface is horrid and if he's the one that approved it - let upper management know he should be fired for making such a poor decision. Oh, but I don't expect it to change back - because that would mean Michael would have to admit he was WRONG!

    ReplyDelete
  123. .02 of one percent out of 5,000 comments SHOULD tell NETFLIX something is GREATLY amiss. This new streaming site is the PITS. Whoever designed it works for the competition of NETFLIX. Last Sunday I cancelled my subscription. They don't feel that my $10.00+tax a month is very important. 'Course, if that were multiplied by 11 million, that might just send a positive message to the knuckleheads that approved this fiasco.

    ReplyDelete
  124. If you haven't figure it out... your customers think the new web interface is complete trash. Considering how poorly people think of the PS3 interface with it's lack of categories, what are the Netflix UI groups doing over there???. I was waiting for two DVDs to arrive today before cancelling my service but now that I have my DVDs, bye bye Netflix!

A previous blog describing how Netflix chooses interfaces is quite amusing though. If the rest of Netflix worked the same as the UI group, you would get random DVDs and they would consider the experiment a success if you didn't cancel your service despite getting movies that you didn't want.

    ReplyDelete
  125. It doesn't matter if the movies are unavailble to stream BECAUSE WE COULDN'T FREAKING FIND THEM IF THEY WERE AVIALABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I so frustrated with the new damned format, that we're considering cancelling our account. As much as I hate Comcast, I'd rather give them the extra 15.00 a month for another movie channel.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Please bring back the old interface. Without sorting, it takes too long to search for a new movie. Seriously considering cancelling.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Within days of the "New Look and Feel" post there were 5000 (the max allowed) strongly negative comments on the new interface. Netflix has not answered their customers. What is going on? I can not support a business that would completely ignore their customers.

Please note that there is no way for me to communicate my thoughts other than leaving comments in other blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Boo!

    You're the best Spiegelman!

  130. Ah Netflix when will address your unhappy customers? Missing sortable list like most subscribers? Add &vt=tl to the end of the address. (ie http://movies.netflix.com/WiAltGenre?agid=1365 becomes http://movies.netflix.com/WiAltGenre?agid=1365&vt=tl) Bam, Sortable lists... Spread the word!!!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Seriously, do you pay your Q/A people to tell you what you want to hear w/r/t the new interface, or did you just ignore them as they gouged their eyes out and cursed their own mothers for birthing them?

    ReplyDelete
  132. The new interface sucks, now I can't even view what I recently fell asleep to, and wanted to continue watching..here's my question, how inconvenient due you have to make the interface before I cancel my service? As it is, it takes to long to find a decent movie that fits my tastes.

  139. Well, netflix, redbox is going to be getting ALOT more business. Your new interface is soo bad, people, like me, who could usually not care, are taking time out of their busy day to find a way to complain. I don't know how you got such good feedback on your new interface, I still don't know how to officially complain. I guess i will call

    Just ask yourselves...

How many people were going to cancel their subscription because of the old interface?

Or were complaining about the old interface?

    none.

  140. Due to the horrendous new page design, how do you expect any of us to find these new great movie titles that you advise us to look forward to?
It is astounding. It really is.
You can post an update regarding Sony and Starz, yet Netflix does not have one employee that can address the recent backlash over the new page design?
Not even 1 sentence acknowledging customer complaints? Really?
Yes, its really time to cancel.
    Redbox it is.

  142. Finding a streaming movie is a chore now, with the new UI. I was able to find stuff easier with the old (and better) user interface.

Netflix would be smart to give us the option to have it either way. This is so frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  143. The new interface sucks I hate it. I wish you will add the option of switching back to the original (advance view). The new interface make the watch instantly useless. Thanks for you're time.

what more needs to be said...

  145. What do we have to do to get the old interface back? Is there a way for Netflix to offer a new subscription tier, doubling our usual monthly fees or something, so that we can navigate the site cleanly?

    ReplyDelete

  148. Over the years I've learned that if one or two people complain about something then maybe 10 or 20 people really feel the same way but don't speak up. If a few hundred complain, not only do you have a problem but that also means that 1000's of people are upset. Once you get to +5000 complains, then you have failed your clients.
Does that mean I'm going to drop my account, hell no! I'll live on, but I'm going to be that old man that bitches and complains all day long, I'm going to push you and bug you until I get my way.
-BACK IN MY DAY WE HAD A CHOICE OF INTERFACE.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I found this while poking around the internet.

I want to know who the new interface was tested on.

  150. I left a few months ago and keep getting emails to 'come back' - why would I? Why don't all you who complain vote with your feet? Just leave!

    ReplyDelete
  151. What's funny is that there are people calling.out.all the "asshole" and "whiners" and saying "get over it" yet they took the time to actually read all the.complaints. True, 5,000 complaints against all the happy Netflix users may not make a difference as to whether something will change, but it shouldn't go unnoticed even if it were only.5. Obviously we all love Netflix and it's services, but we would appreciate it if they would actually show.some concern for what their customers have to say. Damn, I've been trying to get answers for over a month.as to when my.Thunderbolt will be able to get streaming Netflx. Still to no avail. To call the people complaining assholes and whiners and saying just leave? Fuck you dude. If every customer of every business got fucked over at least by any of them, and decided never to use it.again, there'd be.no one.left. we all love Netflix. We don't.want to leave. We just want to be heard and want something done.about it.

  152. Netflix! This is total BS on your part. I can't wait until my month is up. Vudu doesn't have any of the problems or complaints you have. You have failed thousands of your customers. So long Netflix. I'm going to sit by and watch your stocks plummet while you keep screwing up. Blame Sony for your mistakes. How stupid. Just like the ps3 UI. "Oh it was Sony" Lie Lie Lie to your customers.

    ReplyDelete
  153. The biggest lie from Netflix. "The majority of users enjoy the new user interface" If so, where are their comments? People like to have their voice heard. So why are there no positive comments on the new UI? Oh maybe 10 positive out of 5000+ negative comments.

    ReplyDelete
  154. My subscription ends the 29th. If we don´t have an option to get back the "old" sorting features, I´ll be cancelling my account by then.

This is no threat, just a simple fact.

    Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  155. I hope this message gets to the top at Netflix. You had better figure out how to deliver more content on Instant Watch if you want Netflix to be around in the next five years. I understand that building the infrastructure to deliver more internet content will cost more. I will pay a premium price for the additional Instant Watch content. Keep in mind that you are now competing with Apple and Amazon, but I shouldn't need to tell you that. Fix the Instant Watch lack of content or you will lose your customer base to Apple, me included.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Sony should find another source to host movies as Netflix disregards the customer. Starz should drop Netflix as welldue to the angry growing complaints. Who would backup a company like that? My subscription ends on the 24th, and if it weren't for the Google Chrome workaround I'd have cancelled by now. Looking for an alternative ASAP

    ReplyDelete
  157. Netflix fix the interface it sucks, why do you hate your customers?

    ReplyDelete
  158. Netflix is in the state of mind that since it is the only major option for watching movies by mail and streaming, it can do what it wants. This is the same attitude Blockbuster had about movie rentals 10 years ago. But look at Blockbuster now...

Netflix, when another company comes along that is better (and it will happen), say goodbye to your customers. Your future has been predetermined.

  171. Ryan Lawler from NewTeeVee claims to have the real reason Sony pulled the titles:

A person with knowledge of the situation says that Starz had reached an IP distribution cap in its contract with Sony that resulted in Starz asking Netflix to temporarily take down the Sony content. The clause was part of the most recent deal between Starz and Sony, which likely didn’t anticipate the tremendous growth Netflix has seen for its streaming subscription service over the last few years. Netflix’s subscriber base has grown nearly 70 percent over the past year, from 14 million subscribers in the first quarter 2010 to more than 22.8 million subscribers in the U.S.

Thanks to Lois, Tony, Al & Dylan for sending this in.

Your life must be pretty crappy for you to have all this extra time to waste in the middle of the day on a netflix blog. But I digress, if I had a girly name like Dustin, which sounds like a queef when you say it, I would be mad too.

  173. I'm one of the assholes who hates the new interface, it made Netflix (for me) an unusable piece of crap. It's been suggested that people like me just "go away", no problem....my account went on hold a week ago it'll be canceled at the end of 90 days if Netflix is still sucking. So, Netflix lost the Starz movies??? So F'ing what.......I've got Starz AND Starz on demand on DirecTV, and those movies are all in HD over there.

    ReplyDelete
  174. Hey Netflix, FCuK your new Website UI! Why don't you get your thumbs out your asses, and address the THOUSANDS of complaints?

    ReplyDelete
  175. Would be nice if Netflix hired moderators so we can rid of the troll pests here or not have a blog but a message board to keep the retards in place. And to the person who is posing as VP you are one dumb shit I hope they stop your Netflix or screw you more for that pathetic attitude. And as for people bitchin about limited selection, you have to be that retarded to not be able to make searches to find what you are looking for yeah sure fuck Sony for what they are doing but hey GREED is important to the FILM industry, yeah sure the new UI looks BS but I am pretty sure they will fix it . One last thing, Netflix does not control which Film Company wants to stay to make business with them if they got an contract deal than they got a contract about who knows how many years I am pretty Sony will regret it if they Breach contract because if I remember it is up until 2014. DAMN! I hate annoying people, be happy there are still 1000s of movies still to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Wow I must the only Netflix user who never even looks at the website. I pretty much only use Netflix through my ROKU. I read through some of these comments so I hopped over the website to see the change (in the dark much?). I didn't find it awful, but I don't really have much pull having rarely used the old UI either. Oh and I rarely watch Starz play, the quality is so terrible it's not worth it.

  177. I realize that the website is different, and a pain for some... I also realize that losing Sony/Starz content is an issue for others... My biggest problem is the complete and utter lack of new release titles in a timely fashion for streaming view...

I would be much happier if Netflix were to receive movies like the DaVinci Code before free services like Crackle. If Netflix continues to lose content and replace it with lackluster 1990's movies, I think their subscribership will drop quickly.

They have survived the competition for now, but when Amazon launches a 'free streaming service' with the Prime memberships, offers newer releases for $2 extra per movie (and might even hook up with RedBox for a larger rental market) the glory days for Netflix may be ending sonn...

  178. There's no room on the other blog, so I'm commenting here.

I absolutely despise the new look for netflix. the pictures are too big, the artificial lag is horrible and actually induces migraines for me. I haven't watched a movie on netflix since the change was instituted, and am not-so-patiently swaiting it's reversal. I am upset that there was absolutely no beta testing, and no option was given to browse the old way.

But most of all I am upset that there is no proper forum to voice my complaints. I PAY for your service. I give my money to you, and I think that merits a right to be heard.

At this point, next pay cycle I'm simply canceling my subscription.

  179. I absolutely hate that I can't right click on a movie and open it in a new window. I have to add it to my queue to manage it. This is counterintuitive and adds more hoops to jump through to find out the info on a movie. Netflix! Are you listening to us?

I HATE YOUR NEW UI. It makes me seasick, and I can't use it long enough to find anything! Sucky change!!! Quit trying to be 'cool,' and go back to 'user friendly.'

Also, I want to be able to sort my queue. It is very needed to organize so that selecting something on a streaming device is easier.

Being able to make folders for like items would also be very useful for managing.

Too bad your post concerning your 'wonderful new layout' closed after 5000 responses. Aren't you interested in how the rest of us feel about the crappy UI?!

Concerning the Starz content... I don't think users should be limited in any way. I am not for dropping content, but adding even more.

  180. "Would be nice if Netflix hired moderators..."

    Yep. Agreed.

That way we wouldn't have to read your drivel.

  181. When are you going to get better movies and shows? "new releases" seem to be mostly crappy movies no one has ever heard of, with MAYBE one A-list movie in the lot. I have to admit, that if the choices of movies don't improve soon, we will return to cable.

  182. "You may have noticed that Sony movies through StarzPlay are not currently available to watch instantly."

Nope. Unfortunately, the f(*&$@g new interface hasn't scrolled far enough yet.

Lose the buggered up interface, or lose a large chunk of your revenue stream.

LOL! U MAD BRO? U seem mad 4 no reason...

Maybe you should go to school and learn to read. Here is a idea, rather worrying about how Netflix sucks and they do not listen to you you should cancel Netflix and spend it on education it is obvious you need to learn to read.

  184. Please revert your Instant Watch changes, or at least allow us to see ratings and sort movies. Your modifications are horrible and my faith in your care for customer usability has fallen dramatically.

  185. has anyone tried amazon is the UI better than netflex? some people are saying they switched over

    Not remotely angry.

You, however, should heed your own advice.

  188. The CEO has been selling for quite awhile.

    P/E in the seventies?

    UI change that alienates customers?

    Condescending management comments?

    NFLX is an absolute short.

  189. Since the UI change section is full I will say it here.
The old UI needed an update like:
1: actual new movies section not just new to Netflix! I was going to blockbuster's website to see the new releases section then updating my Netflix.
2: being able to add movies to DVD Queue through streaming devices or save them to instant when they become available. Now if you search for something it just shows DVD only and no helpful option.

I feel sorry for all the Netflix employees who had to implement this change knowing it was not only useless but also infuriating. I hope some manager get fired for not lisening to honest concerns during this process.

  190. Hi. My guess is the awful new user interface is an attempt to hide the fact that you have few, if any, streaming movies worth watching. If I'm right, consider it a smashing success! With your update in place, I can only stand a couple minutes before I close my browser in frustration, whereas before the change it'd take me at least 10-15 minutes to fail to find anything worthwhile. Keep up the good work.

  191. Why are all of the "watch instantly" movies such CRAP? Honestly, I'm about to drop my membership and just put the money towards on-demand and watch what I want. I couldn't believe I went to watch something in my queue and it was gone, but this Sony/Starz thing explains it.

  192. So to recount.

You screw the social enjoyment of your customers. Removing friends features etc.

You screw the UI beyond all usability.

You remove any last vestiges of community by even removing avatars; Completing your social genocide.

    And now this.

I have been with you guys from the beginning. It's actually really sad to see what kind of company you've turned into.

    I'm canceling my account.

    All the best.

  193. Your new ui interface sucks. Change it Back you morons.

  194. Netflix, you remind me of my last ex. And like I had to do with him, I'm moving on to something better.

Your UI makes me feel physically ill, no joke. The stars under the films were essential in being able to find things to watch. I can't stand that you took out sorting. So now I can't see the old films I've rated? Good job. Also, making everyone anonymous just breeds trolls.

I'm putting my account on hold at the end of my next billing cycle until you either shape your shit up and give users an alternative to your shit, or until it expires.

So I guess this is goodbye? I needed to start reading more books anyway.

  195. tell micheal the new watch interface is not a mater of getting use to it. the interface watch list is SLOW- NO STARS UNLESS U LOOK AT EVERY EVERY EVERY ONE GET IT- CAN'T GO TO REVIEWS-CAN'T PUT IT ON A DVD LIST IF ONE WANTS TO-it's not user friendly, the watch instant wasn't broke, why did u fix it? did you need to justify your job? couldn't leave well enough alone. Just think all that time and money to fix something that wasn't broke could have been put into getting better movies sooner on the instant selection or dvd's. Now u have a choise to leave it as is and have customers unhappy or dump more money and time into fixing this mess.my family and i have to browse dvd's to see what we would want to watch and hope it's on instant watch which takes half the time to do. looks like netflix will have to sell stock to fix this mess and they should use micheal's share to do so.my wife says this is mean sorry micheal sometimes the truth hurts but you need to fix it. please foward this to micheal thanks

  196. We realize you're trying to make PC users play in the same environment as Wii and other consoles, but the entire reason we use your service on a PC is because consoles are comparatively useless. Stop trying to make your early adopters use a crippled format like the console users. PC users are your first market, and we will be the first to leave if you insist on treating us like console gamers.

  197. sorry for offtopic, but.

I was looking for some movie, and Google brought me here, and I found the movie I was looking for. I filled the form, gave away my credit card data and hoped I'll get the movie. But all I got is the message that your site doesn't work in my country.

I'm somehow used to that. I live in Russia, and I know, that western people think that Russia is some cold country populated by drunk bears. Actually, you stupid stereotypes is your problem, but when you take our money and don't feel like you should do what you were paid for - it does bother us a little, though we know about your stupid stereotypes and try to be indulgent.

Well, to cut a long story short - may be I still have some chance to get what I've paid for, please?

  198. please fix the instant watch and put your money into getting movies that's the bottom line.MOVIES we don't need the rest of the crap we are here to watch movies not to be part of face book or anything else but maybe renting games from u would be nice stop throwing your money away but if u want to throw it away u can give it to me

  199. The only reason I haven't cancelled my account yet is that I'm hoping the UI layout will change back to being usable again.
