New Look and Feel for the Netflix Website

Hey there,

This is Michael Spiegelman, Director of Product Management at Netflix. I’m excited to announce that we’ve updated parts of the Netflix website with a new look and feel to make it easier for you to find something to watch instantly.

Starting today, most members who watch instantly will see a new interface that provides more focus on the TV shows & movies streaming from Netflix. The title images are larger, there are more of them on the page and play buttons appear when you hover your mouse over the title images. Star ratings, information and other functions are available when you mouse over the title images. We’ve also made some changes to several pages on the site: adding more rows, and filling out the rows with more TV shows & movies, which you can find by hovering your mouse over the end of a row.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to refine and improve our site to keep giving you more of what you want: great TV shows & movies that you can find and watch instantly.

Michael

  1. The scroll-on-hover is terrible -- the mere act of scrolling the entire page vertically causes random rows to start moving as they move under my mouse cursor and I never get to see the title on the far left or far right because it has already moved off screen and when I actually want a row to scroll, it scrolling is way too slow.

  2. Thanks, now I can instantly determine that Netflix.ca has nothing interesting to watch.

  3. This is the most terrible change I've seen, and if it is not reversed promptly, I will be canceling service. It is now extremely annoying to go to the product page (which I always do, to read reviews), and just as annoying to add the title to my queue. Are you guys smoking crack over there?

  5. Will we ever get the ability to watch instantly from our secondary users? My wife and I have two separate profiles, and only she can watch instantly. This makes it very hard for me to find things I want to watch.

  6. Horrible! Everything feels as if it's running together. I hate the way you have to hover over the last movie to see more in the row. They need to change it back or at least find some sort of compromise! I was in the middle of watching something when the site updated and when I came back to the main page my first reaction was to refresh the page twice hoping it would fix itself!

  7. The new look is a little jarring at first, but it's nice that the movie covers are larger. I think I'll get used two it, but I do have two concerns.

One is that there is no plain display of the movie title without mouse-over. If I want to quickly search through movies, it would be nice if their titles were easily comparable.

The other concern is the horizontal scrolling. the fact that this has a fixed maximum speed makes it impossible for me to quickly skip past movies that don't interest me. In addition, I have to move my mouse back and forth across the screen to poorly defined zones if I want to switch from scrolling right to scrolling left. I would much prefer a real scroll-bar.

    ReplyDelete
  8. What happened to the ability to sort by rating? Now, you have to mouse over every. single. title. to find out that it only has two stars instead of being able to avoid it altogether. Also, the scrolling function is frustrating and slow.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I like the look and feel but the mouse over delay to add to your queue is extremenly unintuitive. My vote is keep all the changes, but put back the DVD/Instant Queue options at the bottom like the rest of the site.

  10. It's quite dazzling how much I hate the new look and feel of the Netflix site. It might be a great idea for people on tablets or PS3's or dealing with remote controls for input, but for those of us who have keyboards and mice (or trackpads), you've just made navigating the site considerably slower.

Beyond just navigation, I think stripping out the titles from underneath, as well as the projected star rating, makes finding a movie on the fly just that much more difficult. Because nothing's in alphabetical order at this point. Now we're just looking at random movies in a random order, possibly by genre, but also possibly in some randomly selected genre that is somewhat related to a movie we didn't actually mean to watch, because we accidentally clicked it when we were trying to scroll past it.

It's a horrible design. Flat-out awful. This is one of those design changes that's going to be talked about on the tech-review sites later today, and not in a good way. It's the Gawker or Digg debacles all over again, because you've deliberately made your site more difficult to use.

  11. Where is the sorting!? Why should I be forced to click through 27 pages of listings and hover over every one of them to see the ratings? Ridiculous.

Plus, why is this blog post the only place to leave feedback about the site changes? You should make it easier for people to comment.

    Really, really poorly done.

    ReplyDelete
  12. totally horrible!!! the scroll sucks really bad! the entire page is all messed up. more on the page? haha thats a laugh. there's so much on the page now that its over whelming! the scroll moves way too fast and is just a stupid idea any way. Stupidest thinge yet. way to go netflix....

  13. Hate it I hope it doesnt stay takes to long for me to go thur movies I dont want, to find what I want to watch. If it does end up staying looks like, ill be stopping my account and saving myself $9 a month.

    ReplyDelete
  14. This is not a positive change. Please go back to the previous version; we have lost a lot (sorting, stars, titles, etc.), and not gained anything that I can tell.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Greetings,

I can appreciate the change and become accustomed to it on the PC since the menus now appear much like what is already displayed on my streaming device (XBox).

However, I do miss the option to go to a sortable list for each Instant category.

I will especially miss the default display of visual text for the video's name since many of the video's box cover art does not clearly show it.

If anything, would you consider restoring the automatic display of the video's name as captioned text? Hovering over each image to get the name is a bit cumbersome.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I've been a subscriber for several years and this is the first time I've been compelled to respond to one of your changes. The new Instant Watch interface is horrible. The previous interface worked very well as I was able to quickly see if any videos were of interest. The pictures are now too large. In fact, I can't even see all the options since they go off screen and I can't scroll left-right. This new format makes it more difficult to navigate the movies than before. Please restore the previous interface. It worked perfectly well and there was no reason to change.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Where did the sortable list go?

So now I cant sort by movie release year or anything else?

You dont want us to find movies on your site or you want us to watch less ????

    ReplyDelete
  18. Form over function, always the sign of a designer that should be immediately fired.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I 110% agree with what Umgawa said! this is a disgrace netflix! you have created the most annoying page ever!!! what happened to the star ratings and the movie titles? absolutley ridiculous! im tempted to just cancel my account and go somewhere else. pathetic

    ReplyDelete
  20. I will be cancelling Netflix if this "new look" is not altered to be more user friendly.
Firstly, it is slow and cumbersome. Secondly, I can no longer instantly see how many stars a movie has. Instead I have to mouse over the movie, which adds even more time to this already slow page.
This is a horrible change, and I hope in the future your changes are thoroughly tested for useability. Currently, its almost at 0.

  21. The new layout is godawfully hideous. It makes the site more difficult to use, cuts out what, half of the useful info, and drastically cuts down on the total information that can be seen on screen at once. Seriously, what the hell were your designers thinking? "Let's see how many users we can lose in one day?" AT LEAST provide an option to go to the old layout. If this stays longer than a week or so..well, I don't need netflix that badly, I'd rather wait for my shows and movies to download from somewhere. Even if I weren't filtering my self in an effort to be remotely polite, I still could not find enough ways to say how absolutely horrible this layout is. BY FAR - THE WORST IDEA I"VE SEEN ALL WEEK. This is the web design equivalent of electing the retarded monkey known as George W. Bush to be president. I could shit on my screen and it would both look better and be more useful.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Please, please, please go back to the old website version. It takes way too long to find something to watch now. We need titles and ratings viewable without mouse hover, and the horizontal scroll takes FOREVER.

It's like there's this annoying, artificial delay built into the browsing now. I want fast information and fast response to my commands, not giant pictures.

At the very least, let us be able to choose which version to view through account options or something.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Off topic, but why are some which USED to be "play instantly"s no longer available as such? I had some in my "play instantly" queue and then you moved them to my waiting list area, so, urgh, had to go put them on the disc list. I would think that once they're available, they'll always be there! Netflix is so unpredictable with all its "give and take away" practices.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I like the new interface. No more click click click - just hover to scroll and see program information.

You only need to click when you actually want to watch something, add it to your queue or change genres.

    Big improvement.

    ReplyDelete
  25. This change is, in a word, abysmal. I may actually mooch off of a friend's full account and cancel mine, because you've made it incredibly difficult for streaming-only viewers to find movies that might interest them.

You've managed to make your layout look sleeker and operate far clunkier. This would be laughably bad, except for the fact that I'm paying for it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have nothing new to add to the list of complaints - I agree with most everything said....just wanted to add to the comment count of unhappy customers.

    ReplyDelete
  27. This update is awful. The scrolling is incredibly slow and you need to return the title and rating to being visible all the time. STAT

    ReplyDelete
  28. The widescreen display and larger movie covers are great, but as others have mentioned the hover to scroll functionality is terrible. Please use arrows like before.

Also, I don't think it's really necessary to have the navigation bar always in a fixed position.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oddly, my word verification for this comment is "joyin," which is striking because there is no joy in the new layout. While visually stunning, with great, big pictures and the absence of tools and buttons to get in the way, it robs me of the ability to see suggested ratings on a title at a glance, stripping me of my ability to skip movies your best guess is correct that I would not like. I PAY to receive unlimited streaming, and the dvds are by far secondary. No plan you offer allows me to rent enough dvds at a time to watch as much as I stream. That you would hamper my paid for ability to do this is a real slap in the wallet. Do not go boldly forward with sweeping change without beta testing and the provision of an "undo layout changes" setting. This NEW look FEELS wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is not a change for the better.

Need a sortable list, if anything the sorting needed to be improved not removed.

Need to see ratings and titles at a glance.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Could you maybe put the arrows at the end or the ALL link so you can see more then one Incredibly slow scrolling row.

Need to at least have the option of old versus new page.

I really liked the old page better.

    ReplyDelete
  32. O Netflix Gods, if you have convinced yourselves that this new layout rocks and that removing features (like sorting by rating) is somehow beneficial, can you at least ADD a tab that shows which streaming movies are coming and going? The fact that "New Arrivals" doesn't let you sort by date added (and now, not even by genre) makes it essentially useless.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It was weird enough before scrolling past the New Movies list and seeing D-Movie smut, but now it's even bigger and larger so any passersby can pass judgment even quicker!
    Thumbs down, Netflix, thumbs down

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would like to weigh in on an issue that most have left unmentioned. Aside from the fact that I strongly dislike having to scour the actual movie poster images for the titles (instead of skimming proper text below the images), I really resent the fact that these giant movie poster images don't scale with the size of my screen. I do the bulk of my instant watching (which is also the bulk of my Netflix use) on a small laptop, and this has made browsing things to watch unbelievably difficult. That's just poor web design.

The scrolling (as most have already said) is also ridiculous. It's so slow! And I had no problem whatsoever with clicking arrows. However, now I have to monitor my mouse and make sure I don't scroll past something accidentally. Additionally, there is no way to skip quickly through titles that don't interest me--which is most of them, honestly.

I'm not certain I'm going to keep my Netflix subscription if some of this isn't repaired quickly. It's just too much of a pain to find things to watch now, and the lack of scaling is really, really bad for how I'd like to use a service for which I'm paying.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The new interface is horrible. I want to see new arrivals by genre, but can't. I want to sort, but can't. The only thing I can do is see cover art 3x the size and SLOWLY scroll to the right.

    Not a good change.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't want to start the movie when I click on it. I want to read the reviews to decide if I want to watch it or add to my list.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Last night I thought the Netflix application on my PS3 was acting up and messing with the lists. Turns out this scroll is the new look. I tried working with it today on both my computer and PS3 but it still seems very cluttered, slow and unintuitive. Please return the previous navigation system.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks netflix you made browsing for a movie 10 times harder.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The new interface really, really sucks. Ugliest thing I've ever seen in my life. It's messy and distracting. I HATE THIS!!!!! Please go back to how it used to be.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would just like a netflix app on tge samsung galaxy s -Epic 4g it's just as capable as the evo. I have not seen a reason why it's not available yet.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Bulky awkward, and slow scrolling system makes me fall asleep. Would appreciate the option to go back to the old visual style.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I HATE THIS CHANGE MORE THAN ANYTHING NETFLIX HAS EVER DONE EVER. Netflix, you have so many great ideas, and your old interface was amazing. This new layout makes me feel like I am shopping at a discount Netflix superstore. I miss the swankiness that used to be your website.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have to agree with the other commenters, this new design has a lot of problems.

I do like the use of the full width of the screen for display. It works well with the movie "cover" display.

However, the horizontal scrolling is a usability nightmare. Figuring out where to put my mouse cursor is a hassle, and the incredible slow scrolling speed makes this horribly tedious.

As others have mentioned, the lack of useful information in the listings is also a serious problem. At the very minimum, we need to see the movie title in plain text and the rating.

The lack of ability to sort anything is also hugely problematic.

Please bring back the old text-only sortable listings. This is the most useful way to actually browse large amounts of content.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow it seems I'm not alone in the general discontent regarding these changes.

#1 The sortable list feature MUST return.

#2 if anything it is the search that needs to be updated to search in more dynamic terms and also to be able to search in watch instantly only or disc only category would be great.

Functionality is the key guys not glitz n glamour that only works properly on high end computers. Its not about recruitment its about retention.

Honestly if this doesnt change and rapidly IM saying good bye.

    ReplyDelete
  45. This is awful. The new interface is absurd and renders it useless. Why is the sortable list gone? That makes no sense whatsoever. The larger icons mean you're displaying less content on the screen and you're displaying it in a seemingly random order.

Please revert back to the old way of doing things.

If you want to create a useful new feature, give me a way to completely exclude certain classes of TV shows from ever showing up. For example, if it's a cartoon aimed at 5-year-olds, I never want to see it in my list - there is zero chance I'm ever going to watch it and I would love to mark all of them "not interested".

    ReplyDelete
  46. I'm sure Netflix will again choose to silently ignore their customers as they always do when they make a crappy change that most people dislike.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Seriously, Netflix was supposed to be an improvement over going to a place like Blockbuster. But at least at Blockbuster, the movies are in alphabetical order.

This new layout is tantamount to going into a video store, walking over to the spot where a DVD is supposed to be, and then it scurries away from you like a little rodent.

The anonymous poster who made the statement about "form over function" and how that UI designer needs to be fired is totally correct. Only slightly less responsible is Michael Spiegelman, who trotted out the blog post we're all commenting on right now. Basically, whatever top dogs at Netflix approved this ridiculous design need to have their heads examined.

Just because Google is a very simplistic website doesn't mean simplicity is the best thing for every site. Just because somebody's in love with the PS3 Netflix interface doesn't mean that it works better in a browser window than the system you already had.

I always joke about the people who still go to Blockbuster Video. They might actually be on to something. Because this new site is horrible. And at least at the local Blockbuster, there's a pizza place next door.

In closing, please fire the UI designer responsible for this mess, as well as the manager who approved it for mass consumption. Because they obviously never use web browsers for watching Netflix, but they're the ones making the call on how our experience works. Focus testing is a good thing, guys. If you say you tested it internally, showing it to sycophantic yes-men who fear for their jobs is not focus-testing.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Guys, this is bad. This is not just users reacting poorly to change (I saw that today with the tumblr redesign), this is actually a very bad redesign.
Yes, you've made it much easier for people to just instantly click on a video that you, Netflix, have suggested they watch. Way to go. But for everyone here who does not watch on their computer, who watches on a PS3 or some such device, for those of us who like to find out more about a film before we watch it, and for those of us who use their Instant Queue to organize their future titles to watch, this is bad.
(Oh yeah, remember when you reordered my queue for me? That was fun. I was really hoping to watch the movies I carefully ordered in a completely random way, but I just wasn't sure how to do it.)
This is unacceptable. This is awful. And furthermore, I don't need this. I've loved Netflix for years, but I'm tired of being treated like my opinion doesn't matter. I'm tired of feeling like a weirdo holding on to antiquated technology because I still like to rent DVDs.
There are other streaming services. There's GreenCine. And they'll be getting my money if my concerns aren't addressed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The new look is HORRIBLE!!! There is no easy way to see what is or isn't in either my DVD or Instant queue. It's hard to tell what category anything is in. And really it just doesn't look as clean or well designed as it used to. Please put it back the way it was or at least give users the option to choose the old format.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I hate the new design.

I also noticed that my instant watch list that I painstakingly alphabetized has been randomized by the service. Most likely due to the new design philosophy.

    ReplyDelete
  51. This new interface is a worse decision than the changes to the gizmodo website. Slow, ugly, no scaling, and another dumbed down so much that is it useless interface. Horrible implementation of a bad idea.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Michael Spiegelman or some other representative ought to at least offer some sort of response. You might as well make the blog comment-free otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I hate the scroll-on-hover. I also don't appreciate the larger poster images because it reduces the number of options I can see on a page. Did you actually watch the way people used the feature? I mean, I'd glance at a series of posters then hover over ones which seemed interesting. Now I have to hover my mouse forever until the entire set of tiles replaces itself. It's totally crazy and far more time consuming. I'm extremely disappointed.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Agreed with the poster who says the new layout looks like a Netflix discount superstore. I would expect this from a Redbox streaming service.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Why aren't there sortable ranking lists for everything, what happened to the stars under movies? Why do i have to mouse over to see how the movie is rated for me..... Change interface back plz.

    ReplyDelete
  56. What I love:
    - Big pictures
    - One click to play/resume
    - Mix & Match genres from the homescreen
    - The horizontal scrolling (but see below) - including (and especially, actually) the wrap-around

What is confusing, and detracts from the good:
    - The solid background makes the whole page look like a data table. The pictures tend to just blur together after a little bit
    - Horizontal scrolling is great, but I'd love to be able to scroll faster.
    - Movie covers are not always easy to read. The titles and star ratings helped me do two things: quickly scan the front page, and quickly go to the movie page instead of playing the movie.
    - The horizontal scrolling activation does not "stretch", so if I've docked my window to the right-hand side of my monitor (I'm using Win7) I can't scroll to the right.

One more comment, to the other commenters here: Netflix has always been a leading-edge company, whether from a design perspective, or from a coding perspective. Will they make mistakes in design? Of course. To suggest that you will cancel their account over this is just being childish. If you want to cancel, then do it. But if you would like to perhaps make some helpful suggestions that might be better.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I agree with the majority of posts. I thought netflix was experiencing technical problems when I first saw the interface. This newest change can only be described as a rather large step backwards. Everything seems cluttered and some parts appear not to be compatiable with IE8 (a lot of overlapping problems). Netflix has always had an organized professional website, I hope this newest update isn't indicative of the direction of Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  58. While I understand the need to try out new designs, how about allowing US the chance to CHOOSE which design is more functional. The scroll over is slow and visually jarring to the eye and I miss the star ratings.

Please change back or give us a choice. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  59. This new layout is beyond frustrating, so much so I'll be cancelling if it's not reverted. I can't sort by release date, star rating anymore and the scrolling is just atrocious. Also gone are the lists of JUST the title names. Seriously I don't need to see 11ty million box arts, I just want an easy to look at break down.

    Is this "My First Netflix"?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Please put the old interface back.

    ReplyDelete
  61. This new layout for Instant Watching is a complete joke. Now I have to browse DVDs to get a breakdown of ratings and release dates.

The new interface is complete and utter garbage. I suppose I'll cancel my subscription and go back to other sources of video online if it's not reverted.

    Thanks for the memories, Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Why Why Why? Yuk

    ReplyDelete
  63. Good joke, guys! You really had us going there!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Jesus you guys just screwed up again. Don't you ever consult your users before you do these things? All that coding effort completely wasted.
What you should have done was spent the time coding things people have actually asked for.
Like "My List of things I'd like to watch someday".
So that I don't have to start a movie and immediately pause it so it shows up in a list that I can go back to later.
Your inability to think through the impact of design changes and talk to your early adopters before implementing them is stunningly amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  65. You should be glad Ted Kaczynski can't subscribe from prison.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Michael, who would be the best person on the Netflix team to get in touch about moving your current blog away from Blogger and setting up with WordPress for better functionality and more versatile design?

    ReplyDelete
  67. @JoBrad,

No, canceling an account to a service that is now rendered inaccessible without difficulty is not childish. We vote with our dollars and since Netflix hasn't discussed with their userbase about this change OR given us an option of going back to the older, more efficient layout they clearly only care about our subscription dollars. In such a situation, canceling a subscription is the only way to reach them.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Agree with all of the comments about this awful UI. Really REALLY recommend you do audience testing before trying a major update like this ever again. The mark of a GOOD product manager is providing solutions to problems and new features that customers want. Get feedback from real people and don't just default to your theoretical concepts (= arrogance). Also agree with disliking the inability to comment on the Netflix site; pretty cagey way to avoid getting feedback you don't want. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CUSTOMERS, NETFLIX! There's too much competition for you to ignore them...and once customers go away, they won't likely return.

    ReplyDelete
  69. unable to access my account from any computer for the last few days, any updates on when that will be fixed? wanted to add blu-ray discs to my account but I can't

    ReplyDelete
  70. The new site is rough. Can't sort, can't view movies I've watched and too slow. Go back to the drawing board.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I also almost never comment on new changes. This "New Look and Feel for the Netflix Website" is terrible. I feel like each individual movie cover is shouting at me it is sooooooo large. Please, Please change it back.

    ReplyDelete
  72. The site has under gone a number of changes over the years since I've been a customer and this is the first time I've felt strongly enough about it to say something.

Please undo this change or provide the option use the old layout.

I'm sure plenty of time and effort went into this change to improve the sites functions for your customer base; so I'm sorry to say I do not like the new format.

The best sites are the simplest, in my opinion.

    Thank you for reading

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hate it! Hate it! Hate it! Sorry to be so un-constructive in my criticism, but that's my initial reaction. This is a redesign from Hell.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I will echo prior posts...this "upgrade" is extremely frustrating. It takes forever to watch the movies scroll by to see what is going on, and the effect is rather dizzying and distracting. If anyone (I'm not sure who...) likes this, perhaps you could have an option to view the movies as a list, or at least the way they were portrayed before? I'm not sure how this is perceived as an improvement. Unfortunately, I will be inclined to cancel service as well if this is how you intend to continue.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Just have to chime in that the change to the Watch Instantly browsing section is hideous. There is nothing at all that I would consider a significant improvement, and much that is annoying. The more I use it, the more I want to stop using it. Put back the add/play buttons, the star rankings and the not interested buttons, then put in a better scroll method (hello? what's wrong with arrows?) and maybe you've got something. Otherwise I guess it's just time to watch what is already in my queue and hope that someone pulls their head out soon.

    ReplyDelete
  76. The UI was so-so before, now it's terrible.

On the main Watch Instantly page a full two-thirds of my screen is wasted space, on the genre screens roughly half of the screen is wasted space.

The various bits of info floating to the left are completely lost among the comically oversized covers.

The sorting features seem less accessible, or missing outright. The scroll-on-hover is a horrible idea.

    I could go on.

I get what you were going for, but this looks like it was designed for a mobile device. My widescreen mouse and keyboard PC isn't a mobile device.

The old interface was kind of meh, but it wasn't that meh.

    ReplyDelete
  77. The new interface is aweful. Why aren't the star ratings listed under each movie? Why did you remove the sortable list view? I couldn't care less about the large images. You're making my viewing experience more difficult and wasting my time. I'll probably cancel my subscription after I'm done with my queue.

    ReplyDelete
  78. This is outrageous. I just yesterday bit the bullet and cancelled my cable subscription to switch to Netflix on my GoFlex TV as my primary movie and tv source, and today this is rolled out... of all the luck. The site is so much less efficient and feature rich that I can't even believe it. I could live with the changes (unhappily) if it weren't for the fact that I can no longer even sort by rating to find something I'll probably like... I mean why even have projected ratings if you aren't going to allow for us to do anything useful with them. Honestly the changes are bad enough that it's hard for me to even believe that they aren't a joke of some kind. If things aren't changed back soon I'll be seriously considering cancelling my subscription.

    ReplyDelete
  79. As so many have already said, this new interface is terrible. If you want to implement this in order to make yourselves look more "hip" or tech-savvy, fine, but at least have the decency to give your customers an opt-out so that we can go back to the previous version. Making your site HARDER to navigate is not scoring you any brownie points and will, in the end, lose business.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Terrible change. It takes me 7 or 8 times as long to sort through the same amount of content that I used to be able.

While I like the fact that there are more categories on a single page, the horizontal scrolling being so slow means it takes longer for me to find something I've not seen before, or to get me past content in which I have no interest.

As I've started using the discs less and less I've come to rely more and more on streaming content. This change however has made it so unfriendly to navigate that unless something is done to make it snappier I may actually consider canceling my subscription to netflix and subscribing to hulu plus.

    ReplyDelete
  81. First, I love Netflix. I've never commented on here before. But, this layout is not good. Terrible with a trackpad, and it's too hard to skim through the catagories now, it's so slow and annoying.

We love you Netflix, but seriously nice try, but this stinks. Think of something better than this please!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Definitely NOT an improvement all it does is make it much more difficult to surf for more movies to watch, I for one hate the changes.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I hate the changes, all it does is make it more difficult to surf for more movies to watch. I for one vote against the so-called improvements, the changes are a good way to lose customers

    ReplyDelete
  84. the manager that approved these changes needs to be fired

    ReplyDelete
  85. Who did your usability testing? Please bring the old interface back. I'm all for updating but so many good design rules were broken (for apparently no reason) that your site has become almost unusable. I can say that my user fatigue is off the chart with the new look

    ReplyDelete
  86. The "list view" and sorting features were extremely useful to me when looking for stuff to add to my queue. This new layout adds nothing to my Netflix experience except a headache. Why do companies insist on changing things that don't need changing?

    ReplyDelete
  87. The new interface is awful, and I am seriously considering canceling my subscription rather than put up with the downgrade. Everything runs together, there appear to be no boundaries, and movies are hard to find and sort. If I could sort, maybe the large covers wouldn't be so bad, but now I'm left looking at a picture that takes up a large part of my screen space, as if that is how I judge my movies. I want the old interface back, with the easy access to reviews, and such.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I agree with what ever one else is complaining about. I don't like the new site at all.

    ReplyDelete
  89. this is the worst change you could have possibly made. the scroll over is the most annoying system for finding something ever. if i wanted the format from an x box i would have an x box. i scenery hope you return to the previous format or provide an option to pick which you prefer. if this dose not return back to the previous format i will cancel my subscription and try one of your competitors such as hulu or blockbuster. who ever thought designing a lay out in this way was a good idea should be fired instantly. additionally thanks for giving me a head ace all i wanted to do was watch a freaking movie.

I can't find anywhere else to post this, so this will have to do. How can I set up "suggestions for me" so that only a full three star rating or better is all I want recommended for me. I don't have time to wade through hundreds of movie suggestions; eliminating anything less than a full three stars would make it simpler to find movies I'd like. This is not to say I would not sometimes want to watch movies with lower ratings; they would still be available to me, just not in "recommendations." Please forward this to the proper person and e-mail me the response. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Frankly, this change is terrible. It is now difficult and annoying to navigate. I hope it is replaced promptly.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I like that the DVD covers are bigger but at first when I got on I found it a little confusing.

On another note, for TV ideas I'm thinking some of the older TV shows that everyone misses and wants to see again like All That or maybe even Lizzie McGuire. I know a lot of people who would love an update like that.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I love, love, love netflix. But this new scroll-over feature is AWFUL. Is there any way I can make it go away? It makes browsing impossible. The whole thing just feels "in your face" it's like I want to zoom out but I can't. Please, make it optional!

    ReplyDelete
  94. I like the new site a lot, and it is much better suited to widescreen monitors!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Please revert back or I WILL CANCEL SERVICE! I don't like Netflix pushing your suggestions to the top of my browsing page. Let me sort my own movies how I want them or I will just go back to Cable On Demand.

    ReplyDelete
  96. HATE the new page. Change it back please, or at least give us the option to change it back. >.< Its too blinding. I don't scroll through movies on my Wii because its set up this way...it gives me a blinding migraine watching it scroll.
Whats with all the new website changes anways? Ever heard if it isnt broke dont fix it?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Wow, this is horrible. I don't even have words for how awful this is.

    ReplyDelete
  98. really hate the new look.
it's harder to use and has the same flaws as the old look:
it still offers movies that i've marked "not interested" or already watched.
why don't you guys spend some effort on the stuff that matters than on crap that doesn't?

    ReplyDelete
  99. The thing that really bothers me is that you can no longer go to 'see all' and see pages worth of titles which allowed you the ability to compare a larger selection of movies when deciding what you might want to watch. Now you can only see whichever five titles are scurrying across the screen. This is also problem because going to the 'see all' display allowed me to gauge how many titles had been added based on the page count. This change just doesn't work, there's no way Netflix can't do something about it unless they openly despise their customers.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Ohh, wow, the new interface is really, Really, REALLY bad. Perhaps you should try again... quickly. That slow scroll is just ghastly.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Please provide a way to change this back to the old style. At least give us an option to do new or old and track it to see just how many like this new idea. I am sick of waiting for this thing to slowly scroll over. This layout is very annoying and the old was so much better. Sure would also be nice if you provided customers an e-mail address to submit questions and comments. The last thing I want to do is call a number push a bunch of buttons through some automated service just to get my point across.

Would also be nice to new new movies available more often. I am not sure how many you add a day but I would rather see more popular ones rather than ones that don't even rank on my suggested stare

    ReplyDelete
  102. Can you at least offer an option to use the older non-horrible layout?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Yeah, I just spent 5 minutes trying to navigate the new stuff. TOOO CONFUSING, not to mention NO OPTIONS?!? I go to "New Arrivals" on the instant watch and get THREE options....I can't even pick a different genere to look at new movies under.
gonna fix something. Try not fixing it all broke like this. Gonna lose a lot of customers that way.

    ReplyDelete
  104. The new look is pretty terrible. It is overwhelming. There is too much filling the screen, and those images themselves are too big. It needs some system of framing. Does anyone involved in the design process have any sense of aesthetics?

    ReplyDelete
  105. I for one never asked for any update. This is just like another website where you push consumers the direction you want them to go. There is nothing user friendly about the new page. And ifyou asso much keep it where I have to scroll over several pages to even find what I'm in the mood for is not my idea of being a satisfied customer. If Netflix likes the new design and blatently ignores it's customers than I'm going back to cable.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Could we please have the option of which view we'd prefer? This one is less functional for me.

I would like to have my "recently viewed" list back, since that's how I access the TV shows I'm currently watching from my front page. There currently is no option for that.

Also, I would prefer scroll bars to the hover-over lists so I can tell how many there are. The bigger movie titles are useless for me since I have a large screen - it's just a waste of space.

I can see how this layout would be great for mobile users, but for me, it is far, far less functional than before.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Your main web designer must have been offered more pay at one of your competitors sites. You have got to be kidding me. There is no capability to sort Instant Movies by star rating anymore. Not only that, but the Average user star rating is not displayed at all anymore. Why don't you make improvements instead of “unimprovements”, like making it capable to sort by either the rating that is calculated for the account owner or the average user star rating. Even better, give us a the capability to sort our Queue by either type of star rating, or alphabetically, or by clicking on a column heading.

    ReplyDelete
  108. To start off, I would like to say, thank you for the time and effort that you put in, to better customer interaction with Netflix.com

So, I have to say that I'm kind of shocked by the change to this new look. I can't believe that a creditable User Group chose this particular interface. By creditable I mean people who actually use the internet.

I enjoy Netflix for the service it provides... That being said, I have a list as to how I and many others can continue to enjoy Netflix service.

    1. Hover scrolling is a really bad idea and has been since its beginnings. There is too much lag to view the next title. A manual scroll would be a better solution or using the previous next selection.

    2. Thanks for the large images of the movies, but I'd still like to be able to read their titles in a legible font without waiting for the rollover pop-up.

    3. Actually, those images are TOO BIG! I'm having to zoom out to see what is exactly on my screen.

To conclude... The new interface looks unorganized and isn't user friendly. I'm not sure if there will be more changes, but I'm crossing my fingers for better ones than the current look. By the looks of things so do many of your other customers.

    Best of luck!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Wow...I really don't like this, please change it back fast!!! It is way too large.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I HATE THESE CHANGES! I want to view the ENTIRE list of episodes in a series and CHOOSE which to watch. This new way starts playing immediately. HATE IT!!!!
I am cancelling and going with REDBOX!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Oh my god, this lines up with the gawker redesigns as one of the worst redesigns of all time.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Im really not happy about the change. It does not seem that you asked your customers what they would like changed or upgraded. It does not appear to be functional. I watch a lot of instant movies. How I select those movies is based on Genre then I sort them by RATING in a LIST format by Movie Title. Now I have to mouse over every single movie before I can see the Rating. Ive been doing this for an hour now and now Im frustrated and don't want to look any more. This is definitely going to prevent me from watching movies instantly. You really need to bring back sorting the way it was before. Theres no way to make an informed decision. I can't make my decision based on a pretty picture. I think netflix will lose customers over this new design. Its not user friendly. What was wrong with the way it was anyway? Did you even bother to ask your customers what enhancements they would like to see? Im real disappointed. I was ready to watch a movie and now I might be looking for one all night. Please put the sorts back.

    ReplyDelete
  113. How far you've fallen as a company. What happened to hiring the best and brightest designers and let them make innovative products? As as a front end developer i have to say this joke of a redesign falls more flat than gawker, which is already setting the bar low.

    ReplyDelete
  114. please bring back the old version, the icons are much too big and it's hard to look at everything, the old version was much more user friendly!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Absolutely terrible design and function. Whoever approved this needs to be fired.

    ReplyDelete
  116. All i have to say is you made nothing easier. The website and the new ps3 interface are the furthest thing from user friendly. I loved how the old ps3 interface had menus and I was able to click on a category and a huge screen filled with titles would pop up now i can only scroll through these lines of titles that only show 4-5 at a time. I almost would rather go to a Redbox or find another place to stream then having to deal with the hassle that is the new interface. It takes way longer to find anything unless you know the exact title you want to watch. In my eyes you had it perfect before the changes. Please change everything back asap.

  117. "This is Michael Spiegelman, Director of Product Management at Netflix. I’m excited to announce that we’ve updated parts of the Netflix website with a new look and feel to make it easier for you to find something to watch instantly."

    Dear Michael,
I am sorry to have to be the one to inform you that the new interface is utter rubbish. It fails to be an improvement over its predecessor in any aspect of its function. Please inform your employers that a drunken dyslexic monkey would be a more acceptable design lead for your web concepts.

    Thanks a bunch,
    Kyle

  118. another unhappy customer

    ReplyDelete
  119. There are some niceties in the new user experience. I like the full use of my browser width. What I don't like is that I use my mousewheel to scroll vertically and hover at the edge of the screen to scroll horizontally within a category. It's inconsistent and frustrating. Moreover, the scrolling isn't well-implemented. There's no visual cue as to what to do to cause scrolling to happen, and it scrolls at an atrociously slow rate.

Please figure out what works and doesn't work about this new UI and fix it quickly. (To summarize, I like it visually, but the scrolling is extremely annoying and decreases my customer satisfaction.)

    ReplyDelete
  120. Give me back the star rating under the movie so I don't have to scroll over each and every title. many times I pick a movie based upon the star rating. the star rating is one of the most valuable pieces of information!!!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Did you even USE this before you put it out?!?

This design is only useful for an idiot that clicks on the first pretty picture they see.

Competent user interface design isn't always easy, but with the ungodly amount of money you are making, you should be able to find SOMEONE.

Usability is 100 times more important than pretty. You have pretty down. Now you might want to try and make something thats remotely usable.

    ReplyDelete
  122. You've made an incredibly bad design choice. Not everyone who uses your service uses a PS3. Not everyone who uses your services is adept at computers. I just now figured out how to scroll horizontally, which, by the way, is incredibly awkward for those of us who use a laptop without a mouse. The last interface was very intuitive; this one requires a set of instructions.

And what is the deal with randomly reorganizing my queue list? What is the point of that, other than to make it harder for me to find a movie I want to watch?

I will see what happens over the next few days. I am seriously considering canceling my subscription due to this poor design. Based on these blog comments, I'm not alone.

    ReplyDelete
  123. The new watch instant design is just awful. You've made it considerably more difficult to browse instant movies on the pc.

    ReplyDelete
  124. If you could give us the option to go back to the old format as soon as possible that would be great. I'm not going to pay you to inconvenience my search for a movie for very long.

    ReplyDelete
  125. This new layout is horrible. It takes days to scroll through my instant que now. come on netflix lrn 2 html and give us some view options intead of making us feel like blind elderly people

    ReplyDelete
  126. I appreciate that some people may like larger covers, but you have ruined my browsing experience with this change.

    1) Large covers waste valuable screen space especially on my smaller laptop screen. My eyes can easily handle much MUCH smaller. Perhaps a scalable sizing system would be best for everyone.

2)The side scrolling is excruciatingly slow and jerky.

3)I really liked being able to see a movies rating without hovering. The is very important because watch instantly, while getting better, is still full of garbage that can't be easily detected by the cover. Not to mention the hover text is way too slow.

4)Removing the option to view as a list is like a slap in the face on top of all these changes. It is my primary method of browsing.

I love netflix, but if this change stands I will probably cancel my membership. Not out of annoyance, but simply because I can not use it anymore. It is now extremely slow and very difficult to browse the collection.

    ReplyDelete
  127. The scroll on hover sucks. Oh, it works just fine on my computer, but it sucks. Takes three times as long to find a movie, and no way to get out of it. Did you guys do an usability testing at all on this? A real letdown, I normally think so highly of your service...

    ReplyDelete
  128. Seriously disliking the new layout. Please improve it or put it back, nothing was wrong with the old one.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I hate it. it's the worst. change it back.

    ReplyDelete
  130. This new interface is terrible for one simple reason: Less information is displayed in the interface: The title and star rating is not displayed, and the only way to find that out is by hovering over the images.

Michael Spiegelman said this interface will make it "easier for you to find something to watch instantly". This is false. Decreasing the information on the page INCREASES the amount of time a user must search for something they like.

This is obviously poor interface design, and the interface designers know it. If this interface was superior, it would be on the entire site, not just the watch instantly.

Changes like this should be tested by the users. If this interface was tested in focus groups, those results should be released to the users.

Interface design is not an art, it is a science. Treat it like one.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I don't like the new interface. It is disappointing that the most useful feature has been removed. I enjoyed being able to do a sortable search. I like sorting by year or ratings. It made it easier to find a movie I wanted to watch. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to how things are organized. Chaos is not a preferable experience to organized intelligent search. I also miss the user ratings below the video. Really how much space could that have taken up with the new user interface. Please bring back sortable search and ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  132. OK, this really, really sucks. Who was the moron who took something that was working and broke it? The new design is slower, difficult to navigate and lacks critical features from the original. I've been a loyal subscriber for years, but if they don't change back, I'll probably drop my subscription.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Whoever approved the new interface should be fired. This will go down as a shake-your-head-in-disbelief debacle.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Just chiming in that this is startlingly awful design. A usability nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Since every movie has the name in a different place, size, font, color and orientation, reading through the titles becomes painful on the eyes. Please add text titles under the movies so they are easy to scan at a glance. The current format is almost painful.

Scrolling through the categories on the front page is slow and tiring. The old method made it easy to quickly sort through a category and know exactly where it started and ended.

    ReplyDelete
  136. So, I appreciate that it's hard to make design changes, and that sometimes it's just a matter of getting used to stuff, but a couple of things:

    - Really disconcerted that clicking images takes you straight to playing the video. Read the blog post and understand that I can click on the title to go to the listing rather than straight to playing, but lots of people won't read your post, and I couldn't figure that one out without being told (and I looked).

    - Don't love the left-right auto scroll, and it might be useful somehow to also have control of that so you can also scroll at own pace. Auto scroll makes me a little dizzy.

Hey, on a completely unrelated note, I would love an email that tells me if something in my instant queue is going to become unavailable for streaming. That'd be a lovely addition.

On the plus side, I really like how many more movies and categories you are getting on the page. Found some new stuff to watch that I probably wouldn't have found otherwise.

Thanks for the continued attention you put to creating a good user experience. Seems like one needs a little refinement, but appreciate the effort :)

    ReplyDelete
  137. As a long time netflix user, a change as random and useless as this, convinces me that function and usability is no longer key, its time for me, to switch to amazon.

    ReplyDelete
  138. The new interface....kill it with fire! The first time I saw it I didn't think the page loaded all the way. Did you have an intern get ahold of the web page for a bit?

    ReplyDelete
  139. I appreciate try to innovate the site but I cannot say im a fan. I like to look at the info and reviews before i watch and its hard when clicking only hits play.

    ReplyDelete
  140. WHY IS EVERYTHING SO HUGE!!!!!! WTF? I have to sit back from my monitor to see anything now. Also it won't scroll unless I am moving my mouse. I litererally have to move my mouse back and forth to f'ing scroll. What a pain in the ass! How about the old arrow buttons back for scrolling? Why is it the interface seems to get worse with each version?

Also, why is this on blogger.com? Why can't I sign this message with my Netflix account so you know this comment is coming from a long time paid subscriber that thinks the new stuff sucks?

    ReplyDelete
  141. As a long time netflix user, a change as random and useless as this, with decreased functionality and headache-inducing g forces, leaves me wanting to switch to amazon movie prime.

    ReplyDelete
  142. BAD CHANGES. The scrolling gives me a headache is a annoying to use. The only positive change is the larger pictures. PLEASE bring back the original style scroll bar!

    ReplyDelete
  143. I would love the option to revert to the old look. Sorting was my favorite feature...

    ReplyDelete
  144. This is just awful. Who designed this new look? Your 6 year old daughter?

The scrolling is slow and clumsy, you can't see ratings without mousing over, you can't see reviews without mousing over and clicking on the title. I'm on a massive widescreen and I still can't fit more than 5 titles on my screen.

I honestly feel like cancelling my account right now.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Wow! Obviously I'm not the only who hates this new interface! As noted below, my biggest concern is lack of sorting and lack of up-front information (rating, title, etc) without having to hover over the title. More importantly, why doesn't Netflix have a customer feedback/suggestions area??? This blog shouldn't be the only way we get to provide feedback! One more unrelated concern: why can't we "stack" gift subscriptions?? If you aren't aware of this, those of us get them on a regular basis (i.e. for birthdays or whatever) have to wait until the EXACT day they expire to set up the next one. If we miss it by even a day, our credit cards are charged for the month, leaving us to argue about getting the charges reversed. What a complete and utter waste of everyone's time!!!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Please add the ability to add instant movies to a sub-account's queue. I would really like my children to have their own content appropriate queue. Otherwise I actually like the new site, especially being able to remove and add items to the queue more easily. I'm probably not the only person who suggested that feature but I was definitely one of them, so I'm happy to see it. I would also like the ability to sort the instant queue by criteria like name, rating, et cetera. Thanks, Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  147. update = horrible. way too slow to scroll.

    ReplyDelete
  148. This is by far the most ANGRY and CONFUSED I have ever been with a piece of software. If you do not change it back, every subscriber I know is going to cancel their accounts out of frustration.

    ReplyDelete
  149. The old design worked better for me.

I want to be able to see the titles and be able to rate (see predicted rating, etc.) without hovering over a picture.

The new scrolling is weird. It might be fine for touch-screen users or someone watching on a TV, but I am using a laptop.

Also, the images are way too big for my laptop screen.

Providing the option to switch back to the old view would be really really really nice.

    ReplyDelete
  150. It is awful, no..no, it is GOD AWFUL!

Initially I thought, cool nice big pictures to see the cover, until pretty much everything offered was some sleazy, disgusting, D rated, hell, Z rated quite frankly, smut fest. My GOD, it's bad enough that netflix even offers these, despite repeatedly saying I am OMGNOTINTERESTED, but now with these lovely huge images, people halfway cross the room can see the horror on my screen.

The scrolling sucks, it's either too slow when I actually want it to scroll or scrolls when I don't want it to scroll.

I HATE, HATE, HATE that clicking on a title starts the movie instead of giving me the damn movie summary.

Everything is just thrown together with no rhyme or reason - cheesy, disgusting porn wannabes thrown in with 50s classics? WTF?

OMG just make it GO AWAY! Seriously, go back to the old design. Sure it wasn't perfect but this mess? Oh dear GOD, all I can say is MYEYES!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  152. your new watch instantly interface is way too slow.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Worst change ever. I did not like this interface on the Wii and sure as hell do not like it on my PC. Great, now finding a show or movie to watch can take significantly longer due to how slow this new interface moves. Why in the world would you take out the scroll bar? We all have a mouse and keyboard here not a clunky Wii controller. Do NOT want.

    ReplyDelete
  154. the horizontal scroll on hover is one of the worst design changes in the history of all design changes.
It scrolls too fast, it's choppy, I feel nauseous.
Your previous design did not need to be changed. Why did you change it?

    ReplyDelete
  155. Not only is this redesign annoying and confusing, but it's absolutely useless as well. You've stripped all of the features your users love just so your site can look like an iPad app. Congrats.

    ReplyDelete
  156. It's annoying that I no longer have instant access to my last three viewing preferences.

Please ask Normal people before you make "Improvements."

    ReplyDelete
  157. Change it back or I stop paying and go on a crusade to boycott for not listening to the customers.

    ReplyDelete
  158. this new website layout makes me sick. It is gross to look at, harder to navigate and makes getting to what i've recently watched more complicated.

also the netflix "contact us" part of the website is useless. this is the only way I could find, other than calling a representative which takes too long, to let the company know how terrible this update is

    ReplyDelete
  159. I dislike the new interface very much. Not to mention I seem to have lost the ability to include previously seen titles while browsing. Also the removal of the titles and suggested rating makes browsing meticulous and time consuming.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I hated the old layout, but this is even worse. Why don't you guys take a look at some other sites if you're having trouble?

The old layout was hard to deal with because it was ugly, information flow was amazingly painful, and sifting through movies was probably the least efficient thing I've done online in my life.

This new layout seems to make things worse. The design is still fairly ugly, but the information flow is laughable. I'm really laughing. You're trying to show more by making pictures larger and using more screen space? Take a hint from Google, Facebook, and others. Bigger is not better. We are not toddlers. We do not need the pictures to be huge. And the more information we can look through in the least amount of space with the least amount of effort is optimal.

Think about it. I hope you read this comment.

    ReplyDelete
  161. What in the hell did you do. change the style back. Or at least give us an option to use the "classic" interface.

This new one is absolutely horrible... It's freaking huge and the most idiotic layout ever. everything is difficult to navigate and insanely HUGE.

horrible horrible horrible. Is there one review on here (not from a netfilx employee) that likes the new set up? I don't see one

    ReplyDelete

  165. Don't like it. NetFlix has one of the best star rating systems available, and the new site buries star ratings in the hover balloon? Doesn't make any sense. I also want to have the ability to read the movie titles easily over the image. Is sortablity really not available anymore, or have I just not found it? Doesn't. make. sense. Hope an option to use the old site is made available. Soon. This one stinks.

  166. I don't like this new format at all. The old format was perfectly fine and having it this way makes my not want to go to the Netflix website anymore.

  167. I don't like it at all.. give me the old interface back. You should at least give users the option of using the new or old interface.

  170. I believe dropping the text browsing option was a very poor choice; I now am forced to scroll through hundreds of slowly updating pictures that tell me almost nothing of the show, and have to hover painfully over each one to get a synopsys. Please bring the sortable list option back.

  173. If this new design was mainly for mobile devices then why can't there be 2 different formats to accomodate everyone. Do whatever you have to do for those devices but let there be a choice of which format works better for us. And for goodness sakes get the customer's opinion before you put it online. Test it first! Honestly, this is a real nightmare for me not being able to find a movie to watch. I cant sort in a list format. After reading many of the opinions, I think 99% of us agree that this was a BAD change and unless Netflix is willing to change it back, theyre gona lose a LOT of customers. Personally I hope it doesnt come to that but its in Netflix's lap now. I'm hoping to wake up tomorrow to see the format back to the way it was yesterday and this will just have been a 1-day nightmare.

  174. Netflix must have ex Blockbuster employees working for them now because they sure know how to piss people off in a hurry now by taking something that worked fine and making it suddenly abysmal to use.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Not only did you make the site painfully slow to navigate, you also made me it literally impossible to see the ratings quickly?
Thanks a lot you god damn idiots.

    ReplyDelete
  176. I do not like the redesign. It is so poorly executed that I'm considering ending my membership! Please switch back to the old format.

    ReplyDelete
  177. As a tool to convey information (i.e. movie options) quickly and efficiently, this new feature is awful. With the old layout of small icons, one could see 15 to 25 titles in a glance. Now you can only see 10 to 12 and the one at a time scroll feature means you can only clearly see an additional 1-2 titles per second where the old layout allowed about 5 per second. This layout is exceptionally frustrating and slow to use.

  178. I hate it, much harder to find things to watch... What the hell was wrong with the old system?!?!? I liked having the option to look at things by different categories!!! That's what made it easy!!! Now, its a huge pain in the ass, just like watching on a Wii or Playstation!!! I like having options, wtf were you people thinking?! Change it back

  179. Congratulations: You've just replace New Coke and ET turning down M&M's as one of the great product mistakes of the ages.

  180. Absolutely terrible. The pictures are too big, being forced to hover over every title to get any information is too time consuming, the hover scroll is slow and causes motion sickness.

    ReplyDelete
  181. OMG, I can't believe how terrible the new look and feel is. First, there is no way to quickly see the rating of the movies on the screen. You have to hover over them to see the star rating. Secondly, it feels extremely clunky. Before you would click on the movie, read some information and reviews, but now, you have to hover over the image, move the mouse to far left or right to scroll to the next movie. The worst thing is that there is no more sortable list...this feature is invaluable in finding interesting movies that you may not have known about or did not know were released on instant queue. Please let allow us the option of going back to the old look and feel, or at least bring back sortable lists.

  182. Very bad GUI change! terrible! You need to do more focus groups. I thought I had changed a setting or was on the wrong website. Or that Netflix thought I was on an iPad!

    Nope. Not the case.

I hate having to move the mouse over to the side to make the movie list scroll. And the speed is painfully slow.

Give me the option to go back to the original layout. It worked just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  183. Wow, it's really horrible.

Also, all sorting ability is lost.

If this doesn't get better I'll probably just cancel.

  184. Change it back...

  185. It took me 30 seconds to HATE this new setup. I even went so far as to call Netflix, before I found out about this blog.
Before I go into the negative, Netflix was extremely helpful and listened to my complaints. They also told me I could voice more on this blog.
Complaint #1) Why did you take away the ratings below the pictures!? This made it easy to instantly see which movies were rated high for me. I found many of my new favorite TV shows this way. Now it only serves to frustrate me, and I'd rather go watch ANYTHING else!

Complaint #2) Taking away the synopsis page. I liked reading the ratings, as well as what the shows were about. I will not mouse over everything to do that.

Complaint #3) Where did the scroll bar go?? I randomly found the scroll sideways feature. I suggest a scroll bar like at the side of this 'leave your comment' page that you can control much easier.

Complaint #4) I want to be able to search for movies by my highest ratings. I want to be able to type in ratings 3.5 to 5 and find new shows. Please put this into action

Complaint #5) I want the recently watched list back. With the 3 shows we most recently watched at the top of the page. This saves me from searching for them.

Complaint #6) Bring back the clear titles beneath the movie picture.

Complaint #7) I want to be able to pick whether or not I have 'Children and Family' on my home page.

Complaint #8)I do not like how it automatically plays, especially with the TV shows!

I think that covers most of my complaints. I hope someone does something about this swiftly.

  186. This new layout is dizzying and miserable.

I'll admit I'm generally resistant to change anyway, but in this case the redesign is just plain stupid.

Maybe next time test it out first.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Whoever thought this would be an improvement should be canned. What was it? A school project created by a NetFlix executive's 9 year old kid? If so, this is actually pretty good work for a 9 year old designer, I'd give him/her an A-. But if the designer was over 9 years old, and this wasn't a grade school elementary project, get rid of anyone responsible.

  188. Absolutely terrible. I feel like I'm back in the video rental store wandering around aimlessly through the aisles. It's incredibly annoying to have to roll over every single title to figure out whether it's completer garbage (which about 90% of the movies out there are). Put the site back the way it was or... well... I probably won't do anything because Netflix doesn't have any competition, but I'm not happy!

    ReplyDelete
  189. Scrolling without having to push a button or move the mouse wheel is an unwelcome change.

Making the web interface act more like the Wii would not have been what I had in mind. The web interface should be dense with content, not a scaled-up representation of the streaming-only minimalist interfaces.

    ReplyDelete
  190. WOW....and not in a good way.

    ReplyDelete
  191. I've seen some bad interface makeovers in the past 15 years, but this is the worst. Horizontal scrolling only, and I can't change the rate!!! Looking at new releases requires both horizontal and vertical scrolling simultaneously. The previous interface wasn't the greatest for finding movies, and now it is virtually unusable. This is isn't a question of being uncomfortable with change, this is a question of surprising subscribers with a downgrade in service.

    ReplyDelete
  192. I must say everything is too big and too white. It hurts my head to look at it. It reminds me of those remote controls for old people that have huge buttons. Please change it back.

    ReplyDelete
  193. The new interface is snazzy but has become much less user friendly in the process. Two examples: I used to be able to see - at a glance - which new arrivals have high star rankings (I tend to watch movies with 3+ stars). Now I have to hover over each individual movie to see this information -extremely frustrating.

Another very useful feature that has disappeared is to view movies as a sortable list. I would sometimes find movies by sorting them by release date or by stars....now, all I see is a huge list of icons!

I'm afraid this UI change is high on form and low on function. I can just image the ignorant manager that approved this: "ooooohhh, ahhhhhh - those icons are pretty! Go ahead! Looks sooo cool!...." Whatever usability expert was involved with this (if there was one), should be fired.

    ReplyDelete
  194. Hi. The new site is too busy, I really liked the 5 or 6 movies than see all option. I hope you change it back.

    ReplyDelete
  195. Please discontinue the scrolling hover feature in the new section. It's like watching a train pass. You never really are able to read the graffiti on the cars and if you try to, you get dizzy. Not a great feature.

    ReplyDelete
  196. The default main page is almost useless. Side scrolling makes it extremely difficult to tell what you are looking at. The style of the horizontal lists make it very difficult to actually use them and hide links to the various categories. This is rather annoying to actually use! It feels very much like it was not reviewed with someone who wanted to watch movies but rather by someone who wanted something to look cool. So, when do we get native streaming on linux?

    ReplyDelete
  197. This is really bad.

Having to hover over the movie to view the title or the rating is horrible. Very slow and very awkward.

I realize that most titles are visible on the cover, but many are not. The box cover will sometimes be so artistic that the title of the movie is impossible to read. Or the star of the movie is in huge font, but the actual title is in tiny little font hidden somewhere on the cover.

    Really, really bad.

    ReplyDelete
  198. I really do not like the change. My Watch Instantly page now feels crowded. I feel lost completely with all the giant images taking over my screen. Please at least give us the option of choosing our page style.

    ReplyDelete
  199. Old layout was 100% better. Nothing was wrong with it. Change it back, or give us an option to use the old layout.
