Miramax Content Deal

Hi. Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer, here. We’re very pleased that beginning next month, an incredible range of Miramax films will be available for our U.S. members to watch instantly. Among the many award-winning, fan favorite and commercially successful movies are: "Bad Santa," "Chasing Amy," "Cinema Paradiso," "Clerks," "Cold Mountain," "The English Patient," "From Dusk Till Dawn," "Good Will Hunting," "Kill Bill Volumes" I and II, "Muriel’s Wedding," "The Piano," "Pulp Fiction," "Reindeer Games," "Shakespeare in Love," and many of the "Halloween," "Scary Movie," "Scream" and "Spy Kids" movies.

We are delighted that U.S. Netflix members will be able to watch instantly all of these great movies and remain committed to constantly improving our already incredibly wide-ranging selection of films and TV shows. Enjoy!

Ted

  3. When you say "Clerks" do you mean "Clerks II" as well? Loved that movie, laughed so hard that my water broke...literally, I went into labor while watching it.

  10. Hey Netflix team, i'm a huge fan of your streaming movies and TV shows, however i would like to ask why under the TV show section you DON'T feature "Knight Rider". With the latest update you feature now Macgyver, A-Team, Airwolf, Mission Impossible, Quantum Leap and even Columbo. But still no Knight Rider. I'm sure the audience would greatly appreciate if you'd add that TV show to your collection of TV shows (Considering that it was D Hasselhoff's only good show lol ;-)

  11. That's great that the U.S. customers get all those new titles but what about us Canadians? We like to watch movies too you know!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Half of these are already on there or were in the past. This isn't news.

  13. If you keep adding all this great content, then I will be able to FINALLY dump Comcast. It will save me $65.00 a month! I hate giving them my hard earned money for stations I will NEVER watch! Thank YOU

  18. Plz add Pokemon episodes. Even if it's the old ones, (which were de best) I'd love to have a marathon of Pokemon like I did with Avatar: TLA.

Please think about it. Thanks :D

  21. why isn't there a playlist option in netflix?! please tell marketing that there should be an "i want to watch later" button for each product, so customers can compile a list when they are offered suggestions or while they are rating movies.

you might also consider a "suggestions" email option - not being able to get in touch is very frustrating for customers. just put an intern in charge of it to weed it.

  24. Hey, Ted...

We're still waiting for some of the CBS-owned content announced last February, like the original Star Trek television series and comedies like Frasier and Family Ties. New content was promised "beginning in" April and is not yet streaming.

Will Miramax content mentioned in your post here REALLY be available next month, or are you stringing us along here again?

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Andrew - A recent press statement says that the Star Treks are on schedule to debut in July...except Deep Space Nine which will be delayed until October. [As a DS9 fan, I find this slight perfectly appropriate and befitting the "red-headed stepchild" status of the show.]

  26. Wondering if I should have addressed my comment to Fenot rather than Ted, because she always posts for him. Many Netflix execs post for themselves but never Ted.

I would happily accept a response from Fenot.

Can I ask it would be possible to get more foreign movies? I mean, normal distribution doesn't care since they don't get much attendance but streaming could be good enough market.

  40. Let me Know when Canadians get some new decent content, if you honestly think we're grateful for the bones you are giving us think again.

Maybe not enough of canadian users realize the difference between our netflix and the States, because I bet if they had a week of what the US gets, all their accounts would go on hold once they were back to the CND selection.

If any of you have the movie network on demand from rogers, I can say that Ive seen "new" releases appear on there that have been on us netflix for months.

    ReplyDelete
  41. WHAT ABOUT UPDATING THE CONTENT IN CANADA???

    Please do something about it...

    ReplyDelete
  42. That's nice for the US customer... but what aboiut us here in Canada?... seriously we pay the same price and have actually nothing to watch... you guys make enough mopney out of us to give us a bit of content

    ReplyDelete
  43. At least a step in the right direction, although some of these films were previously available to watch instantly (English Patient, Good Will Hunting, etc.). Good to see Tarantino's films finally becoming available.

  44. Update on the announced CBS content, please. For the U.S., please. Some word from you guys on this... PLEASE.

  46. Why is NETFLIX in Canada SO far behind in regards to acquiring new content? Lots of B-Rated movies defintiely not the same calibre as its US brother... :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. Why are you decreasing the amount of titles we are able to watch instantly??? some that were available before are not now. How does this make sense?

  50. Hi guys!
I really enjoy the convenience of Netflix! But being in Canada, it's hard for me to justify it... I don't watch all the tv series' a lot seem to be asking for. I love the documentaries, but have gone through all the ones that interest me, that are actually available. I understand the reasonings why they aren't, but it's still saddening. I hope there's more to come!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Feels more ad more like you really don't care about your Canadian customers. hardly ever any new content and most of what is new is low rated movies. About to give up on you

    ReplyDelete
  52. Canadians should pay less than half for your service since we get less than half the content. But you don't actually care do you since you never bother to respond to any of te Canadian posts. Just silence as usual.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I just love Netflix! I have been a member for over 4 years, and NO complaints at all. It is a great deal, and I have been able to dial way back on my cable bill, to the basic limited at $20 per month. Love Netflix!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think you should add Smallville and Supernatural to watch instantly

    ReplyDelete
  55. Is Reservior Dogs coming too?

    Thanks

  56. what about canadian members?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Meanwhile, new additions to Netflix Canada have been dribbling in at the rate of about 1 new movie every 2-3 days with such blockbusters as Space Chimps 2 and Megashark vs Crocosaurus. (No, I'm not making that up!) I've never seen a company enter a new territory and ignore it so fully as Netflix. As far as Canadian customers go, they are unresponsive and seemingly uncaring.

    ReplyDelete
  58. what about Canada?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Very disappointed in the lack of new movie selection for May in Canada. Seems like your quality and quantity of new movies added is going downhill. I had hoped since you added "hundreds" of new movies from Paramount things were going to be spectacular. Now this Miramax deal is announced for the US only. I'll give you guys a few more months, but if you don't improve I'll have to dump you or start diversion techniques to get the US feed from Canada. Either that or dump Netflix altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love my Netflix but sometimes after I watch a movie I like to put it to the side and save for later. For instance if I find a work out video that I like It stays in my queue and depending on how many movies I add it gets moved further down the list. We can have more control over the queues and how we sort and save our movies. My a favorite section. I know it now sorted on screen into categories but that is still under your control. I stream via Blue-Ray.

    Thanks

    Tanika

  69. I'm so jealous of My American brothers and sisters. BAD SANTA!!!! That movie is so funny.
When is Canada going to get the 300+ titles you promised us awhile ago now?

When will we see some of the titles like Bad Santa?

I've been paying since you started in Canada and i've maybe watched 5 movies. Yup i'm an idiot lol

    ReplyDelete
  72. "but your country has laws that affect what can be streamed. Write your government a blog not Netflix.............or move down south hahaha"

There are no laws like this, it's just that different companies have the rights to license them. Netflix is trying to get streaming rights to everything they can in the U.S., while not trying at all in Canada.

Also, to the smartass who told us to Google "proxy"... Google something yourself dude, there's a lot more to it than an IP address.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Can you add more Bollywood titles to the Streaming? Considering that there is a huge population of Bollywood fans in US and Canada, it would really help increase Subscriptions, and keep that crowd Satisfied.
Currently, even YOUTUBE has more free bollywood movies than Netflix has on offer, and that is quite sad.

    ReplyDelete
  93. completely off topic, but something you need to hear: you guys need to implement social networking!!! all my friends have netflix, and i wish there was a way for us to recommend movies and find suggestions based on what our friends like! do it!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Guys, there's no place to leave comments and suggestions about services, so I'm putting it here. Why have you changed the website so people can't browse by genre anymore? Sometimes people don't know what they want to watch, but are in the mood for a certain type of movie. The change in format has made very difficult to search by genre, and I don't understand. Why the change? You went from a very user-friendly format to one that is much less-so. When I want to search by genre, if it's not one of the random genres slapped on my home-page, I'm left without any options. (The random letter or letter combos in the movie search box have brought up some interesting titles though, so I guess not all is lost. Still...)

  118. Still a tiny number of titles available. And I'm dawn' sick and tired of 2 things:
    1. You now habe all of your titles show up on tivo, BUT THEY CANNOT BE STREAMED!
    2. I'm so sick of titles being suggested and english descriptions shown, only to select them and THEN find out they are in another language. How about the ability to filter by language!

Like someone else said, no where else to leave comments, which means no one will read these either. I'm actually about to bail on netflix. You had such promise, but alas...

    ReplyDelete
  119. Canadian people sure do complain alot...go play hockey or something eh?

    ReplyDelete
  120. Netflix service not worth getting where I live. Only two choices for internet: DSL at max 1.5 mbps, or T-W Roadrunner, which goes down for days and everyone in my neighborhood hates. Why buy hardware (Tivo PremiereXL upgrade) or subscribe to services (Netflix) when the monopolists won't deliver at speeds that make these useable. Hulu barely works. I watch TV on DishNetwork.
Where am I? Venice F'ing Beach, CA. 1 block from where one of the stars of "House" has her house up for sale at $3.1M. Maybe Netflix could suggest that Verizon not wait until 2013 to roll FiOS into the neighborhood.
(Sorry for post here, but nowhere else a non-subscriber can contact Netflix on the site.)

    ReplyDelete
  121. Netflix: I understand you have content licensing deals but please reconsider removing Nickelodeon cartoons (and others) on the 22nd. Don't kiss up to Viacom. You're an awesome company but if these deals keep falling through I will stop supporting your service (and those of the cartoon producers). My childhood is enveloped in those shows and removing them is painful to see.

I am paying for access to movies and shows that I can watch when I want. I am not paying to have those things taken away. I understand that the content producers have a right to do that, but it is an action that will make me reconsider my entertainment choices.

I know this is not the right place, but there is absolutely no apparent way to contact anyone by e-mail. This will stay buried in this comments section, but if anyone sees this, please call to action a reconsideration.

    Thank you.

  122. Where the truck do I go to send suggestions for Netflix? You guys are as bad as Amazon is with its telephone number. Am I supposed to pick up the phone every time I want to leave feedback on Netflix?! Gottam.

Look at all the other comments to blog posts. Obviously, there is a need for customer feedback. At least treat us with fake respect by providing such a tool.

All I wanted to do right now was suggest the ability to rate actors, actress, directors, etc. like we can rate movies. Surely, that would help Netflix suggestions algorithm, which frankly has been sucking balls lately.

  128. I honestly think that all of the films weather they are miramax or not should be viewable online to paying subscribers, I don't think that we should be forced to get them on DVD, DVD's are way too much of a hastle. Just sayin...

    ReplyDelete
  129. I'm extremely disappointed that so many title are available as DVD only. What is the reasoning behind this?

    ReplyDelete
  130. PEOPLE!!

135 COMMENTS AND NOT A SINGLE RESPONSE FROM NETFLIX...GET THE PICTURE...ITS CALLED, TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN.

The only way I can he HD through XBOX 360 is if I buy a new TV cuz mine is not HDCP compliant. In fairness, if you don't mind poor quality game graphics, you can switch to Component Video (RGB) so NetFlix will work.

    ReplyDelete

  141. No other place for feedback, so I'll leave it here. Right now, the actor/director pages seem to be bugged. If I look up a name, and go to that person's page, it is a logged out version with "Join Netflix!" type stuff on the page. I can't see which movies I have already seen/rated, and I can't tell at a glance whether a movie is in queue, or available to watch instantly, like I used to be able to do.

  161. I enjoy the person who wants to see Showtime's "The Wire" on Instant. That any relation to HBO's "The Wire"....?

Checked my Instant Queue today and saw about 8 movies will no longer be available as of May 26th. I thought you guys were moving toward more streaming content. Apparently you're skrinking the film pool instead. Disappointing.

  162. For the love of God, either create a separate Canadian feedback page or appease these people.

  163. I second the May 22, 11:59 Anonymous. Get the Canadians their own blog or SOMETHING! The one or more Anonymous who keeps spamming this place is really getting irritating. If you were to take out that spam alone you'd get about 100 fewer comments.

  164. I use to love Miramax films, but since the Weinstein's left, the quality has gone down.

  165. Hi its Canada, remember us? We don't get anything up here from you guys. Im just too lazy to cancel my subscription but if I see a lame list when i go to "new movies" over and over I will cancel my account.

  168. It's a shame Netflix announcement are so ambiguous...They need to spend more time analysing what to convey in their blog. On that note, why is there no forum or such to leave suggestions and comments.

The greatest travesty (clearly from my point of view) is the seemingly complete disregard for Canadian customers. You need to spend less time getting really old shows/movies and spend time focusing on quality shows.

  169. I am thoroughly convinced in this said post. I am currently searching for ways in which I could enhance my knowledge in this said topic you have posted here. It does help me a lot knowing that you have shared this information here freely. I love the way the people here interact and shared their opinions too. I would love to track your future posts pertaining to the said topic we are able to read.

  171. can we please have some new content for the Canadian netflix?

    ReplyDelete
  172. Dear Netflix,

I love the idea of more movies to watch instantly. But why do you keep changing Watch Instantly content? Everytime I start a season, you change it up on me midway through, and without warning. Case in point: Battlestar Galactica. We finish season 2 on Thursday, and by Saturday morning, most of Season 3 (including the premiere) has moved to disc only. SUCKS!

Guess I have to stick with movies and avoid series.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I don't do the dvd in the mail thing and I find what is available to watch instantly is less than I would like.
Netflix needs to make more movies available ON LINE!

    ReplyDelete
  174. Netflix is doing great with such a reasonable prize.

    I Suggest a New Feature!!!
After a customer watches a movie/TV Show, he/she should have the option of sending/sharing/suggesting the link, to friends(who have a NETFLIX Account Off course). So that the friend, can just click, "Watch Now" in their account and watch the same Video.

Also, for the wonderful features that Netflix already has, I think, there should be, "Suggest How to Improve Netflix" option, at the bottom of the page, alongside "Contact Us" and other options.
This should send suggestions or any related options directly to you.
Well, this feature might create lots of messages from users, but you could create the page such that you could monitor, and filter good suggestions out directly from the end user Customers.

    Thanks,
    Naren

  175. @ Jimsimply - Check out 'Feedfliks'. They provide all the expiration dates for free, and have saved us a whole world of hurt since we signed up.

Great news about Miramax, Ted! It's nice that you guys are able to maintain your enthusiasm despite the relentless stream of complaints on every thread. Though most of them from that one alleged Canadian, one rather suspects!

    ReplyDelete
  176. Nope, has to be more than one Canadian! As I just stumbled upon this blog trying to find a why to send an email to Netflix to complain as to why I pay as much for my service and get less than half the content that our American friends do. Unfair Netflix! Add more or expect a dip in Canadian subscriptions people are tired of this!

    ReplyDelete
  177. Sorry Cat, didn't mean to diminish your pain. Was tongue-in-cheekily referring to this alleged Canadian (copied from the most recent thread) who isn't exactly helping either his (I'm assuming) or your fellow Canadians' case with this rather sad yet entertainingly demented spamming.

  178. Why have you stopped listing all previously viewed movies choices in the watch instantly selections. It seems you are only listing movies that I gave 5 or 4 stars to. I would like to have the chance to choose from all the movies I previously watched like before even if I only gave them 2 or 3 stars.

    ReplyDelete
  179. Netflix,

Keep up with the times. Students no longer enroll in "foreign languages"-and the genre isn't "foreign film"--the correct terminologies today are "world cinema"
and "world languages." In case it isn't obvious, the word "foreign" can csrry a negative connotation. In the interest of helping people to "see" that we all share one planet, consider making the change.

Next topic: Why can't you include the extras on streaming?

    ReplyDelete
  180. how about stop chopping the movie up so we don't recognize it!

    ReplyDelete
  181. stop with half a movie already! you delete important parts of the movie, don't bother with the crap you think we should watch!

    ReplyDelete
  182. WAS EXCITED ABOUT THIS UNTIL I GOT OT THE BOTTOM "US" WHAT ABOUT CANADA! THE LACK OF CONTENT IS DISCOURAGING ME BUT ILOVE THE IDEA OF THE SERVICE!

    ReplyDelete
  183. I like Netflix and all, but I am getting kinda tired of watching the same movies. You just need to make every movie instant streaming and just charge more...I am willing to pay more. If I want a dvd I am going to buy it. I want all the movies now and not have to wait a whole month to watch a new movie when another new one comes out. Its aggravating. Please I don't want to cancel my subscription with you guys. Just add more movies and the better one too. Not the b movies.

  184. I am so happy that you are always working to get fresh content to watch.

  185. Well seems like us Canadians need a b*tch and moan button on the screen. I'd petition Ottawa or talk to your MP in regards to television laws/movie distribution laws. Net Flix is unable add content without the content being approved by our Canadian Broadcast Council as well as all the Canadian T.V networks that are threatened by Net Flix. ie the wieners that control everything , not to mention probably a slew of other red tape. I'm sure Net Flix will at some point get this address to share the love so to speak, but this is an internal problem that needs to be handled by some body with some leverage in the right areas. I'm equally pissed; however, whining here is doing little to help you. If they really cared they'd post something in regards to this content. Spam is not the answer as well. So if your pissed stop service, that's my advice. Lucky for me my kids are happy with the content so far, I have a couple movies I don't mind, but I'm not spending my existence waiting for a movie to come out. Try getting some exercise.

    Signed your fellow Canuk.

P.S if you can get NHL games live, you would be my god. *Crosses fingers*

    Go Vancouver Canuks, Go :D

  189. I'm happy that they're cutting these deals but I would like to see some real new movies not ones from 2 yrs ago and ones I've heard of instead of straight to DVD and Starz play. I have Starz and if you think about I'm paying for the same movie twice.
