Netflix Announces New Content for Members in Canada

Hello, Kelly Merryman here from Netflix, vice president of content acquisition. We strive to bring our members in Canada popular TV shows and movies we know they’ll enjoy. We’ve been working on several deals, and I am very pleased to let everyone know that we are adding hundreds of TV shows that can be watched instantly on TVs and computers, and will be made available starting today and over the next few weeks. For the first time, we’ll have content from the CBC, including great TV series like “The Tudors,” “Men with Brooms” and “Being Erica.” We’re also bringing you the cult classic “The Kids in the Hall,” and many other popular series such as “Weeds,” “The Big C,” “Merlin,” “Pulling,” and “Undercover Boss.” Click here for more details.

  1. This is terrific news - will you also be adding more movies soon? TV shows are great, but Netflix Canada is sorely lacking a strong library of movies - once you add more movies, I'll reactivate my account. Keep up the good work.

  2. Same here, waiting for Netflix to beef up their movie catalog until I reactivate my account.

Keep up the good work, you'll get there. :)

  3. Can this content also be made available in the US? For example, "Men With Brooms" is only available on DVD, not streaming like it now is in Canada.

  4. I'm confused... you say that your adding Weeds seasons 1&2... uh those have been available on Netflix Canada for months. I know because that's one the shows I've discovered through the service. Can you explain why your announcing this now?

  5. Great news! I would love to get at the new content information through your API but there is a lack of support for Canadian customers. Any ETA on an API update?

  6. For people who don't know, this is a great unofficial source for keeping up to date on what is being released.

  7. All I can say is that Mad Men Season 4 better be added as soon as it's released. If it doesn't come to Netflix Canada for some reason.... I'll be very disappointed.

  8. It's beyond me why the search comes up with titles that are not even available? How about fixing the search so that it only returns content that IS available?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'm much more interested in you adding the Instant Queue feature for us Canadians.

Frankly, it's insulting that you want us to pay the same as our American counterparts for a service lacking a vital feature and a fraction of the content.

You really expect us to randomly search every time we want to watch something?

The content difference I can understand. The basic functionality difference, I do not.

  10. Stop sending your stuff to my computer. I will never do netflix again.

    ReplyDelete
  11. The only reason i would keep this membership, which i am really enjoying by the way, is if the legal end of things (which i was quoted by one of your Cus service reps) gets sorted out soon and all of those titles that "exist" but cant be viewed are allowed to be seen by us Canadians.

If that gets sorted out ill keep my subscription but it needs to happen sooner than later, i can find TV shows on utorrents for free.....

  12. 8 dollars a month ppl. Stop threatening to cancel your subscription, support Netflix NOW, and it will grow. One hours worth of minimum wage is all that it cost, one sub sandwich, and still people expect nothing short of miracle from netflix. Canadian laws are outdated and are making it difficult for netflix to expand as much as in the U.S. Please be patient and supportive, and netflix will grow.

  13. Hello can someone at netflix start a suggestive blog for your customers to only post names of movies/television show we would like to view as customers. Sort of a survey. Would like to stream show like greys anatomy, Charmed, NCIS, ghost whisper, facts of life, the game & all in the family We understand all request can not be validated but it would be fun to see the request.

  14. I know this is off topic but don't know where else to leave it.

Could Netflix create a 'Stream Next' queue? What I mean is this: I select 3 movies that I want to watch this evening. I place them in this queue. Then I start watching the first and when it is over the next in this queue starts. This would be especially helpful when watching tv series.
    Just a thought.
    Thanks

  15. That is great news, but can you provide some indication of when your service will be available on Western Digital's streaming devices? Watching on the computer is okay but Netflix becomes much more worthwhile on the home theatre.

  16. Netflix Canada is pathetic - enough said.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Great news! Last time I tried watching CBC shows on their website, the quality was poor. Looking forward to catching up on the Tudors and Being Erica.

Loving Netflix so far! It's about time their was a decent alternative to iTunes, torrents and web in Canada.

No there not for $8 you get a good offering.

  19. I would like to see North of 60 and the following movies to be added. To me, that show is one of the best Canadian made drama series ever made and since Alliance keeps refusing to release the show on DVD for the hundreds of thousands of fans across Canada and USA, it would be great to have it on Netflix.

  20. Until Netflix decides to make Subtitles a priority for all the IW content, I will not re-activate my account.

Right now only 34 movies are Subtitles for Netflix.ca compared to 227 movies for USA.

  21. Well, still the lack of classics we grew with up as kids and the lack of movies,,,too bad. I am glad to see a speck of progress, and slowly, very slowly, it is becoming worth the $8/month...but I am not sure Netflix can fight the government on releasing name brand titles that most customers want...

  22. Great news! The Canada selection might not be the best yet, but I always run across things I've yet to see but have been meaning to. So far so good.

My biggest complaint, though, is that all of the non-film anime selections are only available with their English dubs. I prefer to see works as they were created, and as such, I always use the original language audio and English subtitles when I watch anime. For film, Netflix is fine; Paprika, for example, is in Japanese and subbed last time I checked. But all of the TV animes are dub-only. Please deal with this issue; I know I'm not the only one who would greatly appreciate it. Companies that bring anime to North America have to make subtitles anyway, so I imagine you could just get the files from them.

  23. Honestly couldnt care less about TV shows, where are the movies?? movies??

    ReplyDelete
  24. Really enjoying Netflix and it's great that you guys are constantly adding new content. Can you guys please add a queue for the Canadian site?

    ReplyDelete
  25. netflix please add more anime to your selection.because right now it kind of sucks

  26. As a recent subscriber, I've run into two particularly frustrating problems with the service (which I primarily interact with through the Wii).

    1. No ability to queue/bookmark films. It makes it frustrating to browse before choosing a film, since once you do decide which to watch, you have to dig through the *unsorted* list to try to find it again. Annoying!

    2. Recently Played - how is there seriously no way to delete anything from this? What if I don't want my kids to see my R-rated movies? What if I don't want my husband to see my erotica?

This stuff needs to be fixed if netflix is hoping for widespread adoption, instead of just the early-adopter demographic.

  27. No Christmas content??

  28. Keep up the good work, Netflix!

For $8 a month, it is a terrific value. People who keep making harsh demands, and threatening to quit, should go rent ONE movie from Shaw for the same price as unlimited movies per month from Netflix, and stop complaining!

It is a new service. Give it time and the content will grow. Or, dont support Netflix, they will leave Canada, and we'll be back to having No streaming service in Canada.

Very happy to have Netflix, and will continue to support this progressive company!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Netflix is AWESOME!

    Easily worth $8.00 per month!!

Please update Canadians on when there will be an instant queue.

    Thank you Netflix!

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's really incredible that you have so great content in Netflix...well as always I can'yt take this oportunity because I'm from ather country...

    ReplyDelete
  31. My family loves Netflix! Keep adding content like this and you will have us as customers for life.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I have had the service for 2 months now. I am not impressed with the movie selection at all, in fact imo it's pathetic. There is very little worth watching, lots of less than good movies, like the "bottom-of-the-barrel" types you can get a W@lmart 2 for $5. I am going to keep the membership a few more months in the hopes it helps netflix.ca improve the movie content. In the mean time I will repeat-watch a few TV shows. So Netflis, it's up to you know, make it happen!!!
I am otherwise pleased with the service, good streaming quality, solid connection.

  33. Netflix Canada is excellent, especially for the student population here that has glorious 100MBps internet access but no cable TV.

You really need to promote your Paypal option more though in this region. It's quite popular and I've been turning more students onto it since no credit card was their biggest turn off to Netflix.

We have Video Difference which is the popular store for the campuses along with Blockbuster. But for a flat monthly rate, Paypal and excellent quality that's better than Megavideo or DivxDen, people are going for it.

You need to add a Facebook option for movies so we can show what we're watching, kinda like GetGlue.

Thanks again for a wonderful service!!!

  35. glad to see you guys are working hard to bring content over to us!

I know this is a bit off topic, but is your R&D (Research and Development) department working on not only subtitles, but also audio language selection for streaming service?

Not just for the french Canadians, but also when watching foreign movies, I prefer subtitles rather then dubbed. Since we don't have a DVD rental option like in the US, so I can't view your catalog of videos in my preferred format.

Not expecting a reply, just an idea that many people want :P

    ReplyDelete
  36. We like Being Erica in the US too. Why limit anybody's content? Netflix without borders!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm happy shows from CBC are being added but i can't help but be a little jealous of Netflix USA which has Lost and other shows like that. Can't wait for those to be added here. Keep up the great work. Happy Holidays!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Can we get Jpod please. It was a cult classic, the weeds of Canada!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Too bad, no french content. I will do the same thing that my 7 millions of friends who speaking french in Quebec province, I will not use Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Please bring the older cartoons like "Cow and Chicken" and "Sailor Moon"

    ReplyDelete
  41. The selection is absolutely shameful and going at the current rate of updates we should be getting the same content the Americans get now in about 85 years.

Oh hold on a minute, we got Beverly Hills Ninja on 8 Dec? THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING SIGN ME UP.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The Americans whining on this is kind of funny. It's like getting a 12 course meal and complaining you didn't get any parsley on the side of one of the dishes.

come on guys you have basically everything else in the world to watch

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have just signed up for Netflix and I have to say I'm disappointed in the selection. I am still in my free trial, so it depends on what new selections come in as to whether or not I put my membership on hold. I'd rather not, because I think Netflix is a great concept, but there aren't a whole lot of movies on it that I want to watch. Why is it that I can buy the movie, or rent the movie, in Canada from almost every where, yet the can't offer it here?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Great! Because it has definitely been lacking. What about seasonal films? It's that time of year.... haven't been able to find any.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Good work? Netflix is full of crap. They don't offer a strong library of movies to stream online. They have a bunch of second and third rate movies to make you think you have a choice, but in reality, what they offer are movies no one really wants to watch or movies that people may already own or have seen through no fault of their own anyway. Furthermore, Xbox live software can't handle the streaming aspect of their joint program. Unless you don't mind frequent interruptions while your watching. Netflix is a sham. What a pity Blockbuster dropped the ball during all this....

    ReplyDelete
  46. Netflix is full of crap. Adding more movies? Please... Why add to the 2nd and 3rd rate films they offer now. Even though they're movies no one wanted to see in the first place. Their present movie selection is worse than any late night cable channel could offer. Stick with the mailing program. At least then you have no one to blame but yourself for what's on your queue.

    ReplyDelete
  47. The movie and tv show selection is much too limited and old. I am not subscribing after the free first month because i don't think it's worth it. The service is great but the selection is really deceiving.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Netflix is smoking it. They are ahead of the pack and everyone is trying to hate on them for it. The iPhone app is clutch and the documentary selection is solid & current. The problem is you have some viewers who are more concerned with every show that is no where near their own reality. It's as if they're watching "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" continuously...

and something to add, can you (Netflix) start working on personalized queues...my son likes Thomas the Train and I like Nova/Frontline. How does your algorithm take that into consideration? Since the only option is "Your Queue" I would imagine it does not. (My passive aggressive self is upset I did not buy stock @ $40 when my gut said to. I'll be shorting it at some point but keep leading the pack)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Cool I guess, but right now I would like to see more content in the anime/animation category. Many anime are either not complete as only 1/3 volumes r out or ther r some (like bleach) that aren't even available Wich depresses me

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm on sabattical in Ireland and would love to be able to stream movies while I'm here. Any plans for that to happen in the future?

    ReplyDelete
  51. a few things to say..

    1) it's lame to threaten to leave the service because we all know you won't unless something better comes along

2)stop saying that it's only $8 a month. that is not a good reason to keep any service if it is terrible.... money is money and if it's not deserved it shouldn't be paid.

I like netflix... can't wait to see more improvements, IT'S ONLY BEEN 2.5 MONTHS AND THEY HAVE COME A LONG WAY.... keep plugging away at our ancient laws netflix... it is much appreciated

    ReplyDelete
  52. great news im dieing to see more movies

  53. When you buy gift subscriptions you CAN'T print out gift cards which is CRAP. That needs to be fixed before Christmas or don't let people buy it bulk.

  54. That's all well and good, but canadians like American tv and movies too.

    ReplyDelete
  55. just searched about a dozen title and all of them are US only titles

I'm not going to renew when the free trial is over, you guys blew it !! most of us won't give you another chance if you ever make it not suck :(

you set yourself back 5 years with this regional content blocking crap

    ReplyDelete
  56. I cancelled last week. Sick of seeing "Not Available" on EVERYTHING I search for.

    ReplyDelete
  57. When can we expect to see the SG Series' on Netflix. I was hoping that since it was filmed in it's entirety on Canada's West Coast that we might get lucky. I began watching this series somewhere around season 6 and got hooked. I would like to see the early seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Shodan
The blocking is not netflix that is set by the studios.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Add up Musicworks!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Boy, if that's added content, I would hate to see what it was like before. Virtually every film I've searched for comes up "Not Available" in Canada. And what's with the sound-lag of 3-4 seconds. Might as well watch YouTube.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Can we please see a queue for Canada??? It's getting rather tiresome remembering what you want to watch. Is it really that difficult for your developers to give us a queue.

How about adding some more streaming options. Boxee Box comes to mind

    ReplyDelete
  65. I was briefly a new user here in Canada shortlived until a friend of mine in the states told me what he gets on his Netflix account. WOW...

Try giving everyone the same content. US & Canada. I am sick of American content providers discriminating against Canada.

Even if you want to view TV show preview videos you get the stupid messages from American servers." The content is not available in your area" what a !@)(#* joke.

    I may reactivate my account

    ReplyDelete
  66. Can we please get something set up for a 2 year contract. I will sign up for 2 years, pay all up front, and you can use my money to help get more content on here sooner. That will also help get more people to sign up sooner allowing for even more content now wrather than in 4 years...

    ReplyDelete
  67. never get this shit they dont tell you the size of the file of the movie and it will run up ur monthly dowload data. SO U NEED UNLIMITED DATA PLAN TO WATCH UNLIMITED MOVIES . so u cant get unlimited movies without unlimited data plan.otherwise you will have to pay PAY PAY and you will not know only at the end of the month when your bill come ASK THEM FIRST THE SIZE OF THE MOVIE FILE BEFORE GETTING THIS SHIT

    ReplyDelete
  68. I canceled my trial today. I would subscribe again to Netflix if the monthly charge was proportional to the amount of movies available compared to the US. Right now I have to estimate that would be about $0.07 a month. When more content becomes available, raise the subscription. Isn't that a fair proposition?

After reading the comments there are a lot of "Hey it's only $8 what do you expect" comments. Why pay $8 to not have any movies available when I can not watch the movies I want at home for free?

The problem is that Canadian broadcast & cable companies (e.g. CTV, Rogers, Shaw, etc.) have bought exclusive rights on these shows and they are either blocking Netflix or charging royalties so high they make no money from licensing the content.

We lose out on services like Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Rdio (at least a big chunk of it) because companies are licensed by the CRTC to charge fees that are borderline monopolistic. If you want a full Netflix library I suggest you lobby your MP and write the CRTC.

Until then I guess it's "Yarr Harr Fiddledy-Dee."

    ReplyDelete
  69. Michael
You can't watch them for free.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I see alot of people demanding more content. I'm sure Netflix would love to make everyone happy and add as much content as they could but that's just not gonna happen overnight. It's gonna take some time. If you've seen everything Netflix Canada currently offers then maybe you should go outside and get some air because man oh man you've been watching alot of movies lol

    ReplyDelete
  71. For me, it is not a matter of having seen everything Netflix has to offer. Rather, it is a matter of browsing their selection looking for a movie or a TV show I wish to watch, and every single time it comes up as unavailable. Every. Single. Time. The closest I came was searching for a movie and it's sequel. The sequel was available, the first movie was not.

And I realize this is not Netflix's fault, that they are trying to deal with Canadian license holders, and that is the hold-up.

Still, I am not going to pay for a service that does not have anything I wish to watch. The amount is not an issue. It could be free and I would not sign up; it would be a waste of time.

I'll keep checking back with Netflix from time to time, browsing their selection. I'm confident they will continue to increase their Canadian library, and the very first time I use their Browse feature and find a show I actually want to watch, I'll sign up.

In the mean time, I'll buy or rent shows from iTunes. Sure it costs a lot more, but I can actually watch the shows I want there.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Did you mention "Merlin"? This serial already contains 3 completed seasons but you have released the only first. And what about 2th? Next year? and 3th? In 2012? Are you kidding? You are continuing to add old movies that are not interesting anymore. And what about Matrix, Avatar and other hits? You have to add really good movies and serials asap or dramatically reduce monthly fee, otherwise you will fail. You are like seller that trying to sell rotten fish for full price.

    ReplyDelete
  73. When are you going to start offering a bigger selection on instant play. Half the shows I have to rent a DVD to watch are available on TV is I just wait to see them. I'd be more likely to rent a movies if I could get them instantly and for a few days as well. Why would I pay you to rent a movie and half to wait for it when I can get it on one demand or from one of your compeditors instantly. If I'm looking for a movie to watch its because there's nothinge on TV now.

Bottom line instant is the way of the times.

PS. USA customer here but didn't have time to search for somewhere else to voice my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  74. this was what I just posted on my facebook page... may be tell someone this before they buy a gift cert... please pass this along before anyone else get SCAMED out of money... if you buy someone a gift cert on netflix and they go to cash it in... the only way they can use it is if they got a credit card.... after you buy it, the fine print ( not on you page, but the person you buy the gift for) comes up saying the only way you can use it if you got a credit card (also say if the person you buy the gift for forget to cxl it then their credit card get charged)... please pass it this SCAM on... thanks....

  75. I lived in the States for 6 years and was a very happy Netflix customer there. The catalogue was HUUUUUGE. This was pre-streaming. Netflix added streaming in the States after I'd moved back to Canada but I have a friend down there who was a Netflix customer and he told me the streaming library was puny. From my recent month's trial of Netflix.ca, I saw this was still the case: during my month's trial, I looked thru the entire streaming library for Canada and found only about 12-15 films I wanted to see. I am not interested in the tv shows Netflix has just added, but once the streaming film library expands to match the size of the "hard copy" library available to U.S. customers, I will rejoin for sure!

  76. Gee, even at Christmas Netflix cannot even offer Miracle on 34th Street to Canada....gee how old is that movie, and is not even available? Come on Netflix...you can do better!!!

  77. I downloaded the new Netflix 2.01 interface for PS3, and it is a pile of garbage.

The look and functionality of it are terrible, and it's as if you forced me to download an old beta version.

I can no longer browse every title in a category, which is the single most important feature of the previous interface.

I've since called friends and family to see if anyone else can browse titles I cannot, and those with Netflix on PS3 (almost all of us) are doing nothing but complaining too.

PLEASE GO BACK TO THE PREVIOUS INTERFACE OR RISK LOSING MEMBERS!

    ReplyDelete
  78. To the person who claimed the gift of Netflix was a scam.... i'm not sure what "YOU" did wrong but it's not a scam at all. I've gifted three subscriptions as Christmas gifts and they're all fine. All the accounts play movies. Your CC isn't charged. Don't panic and jump to wrong conclusions. This kind of thing helps no one.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I am thinking of cancelling due to the poor TV show coverage in Canada, it is very frustrating to pay the same as the US but only get a much inferior service.

I DO love your independent movies though

    Battlestar Gallactica please

    ReplyDelete
  82. I agree with the new PS3 interface issues. I cant believe you took away the ability to look at my recently watched shows. I'm half way through several different TV seasons and now I have to search for them everytime I watch them.

I think you need to roll back your interface to the previous version as it was actually usable

  83. When is this happening? We joined a week ago and are likely to pull out soon unless the pathetic content for Canadian views improves significantly.

  84. ************************************
    Shaw Customers re: NETFLIX
    ************************************
Shaw and other Canadian ISPs have quietly begun using "Usage Based Billing" (UBB)

For example, Shaw is now charging $2 per GB you go over their cap. They also lowered the caps by 25-33% for ALL internet customers. They did NOT tell anyone they were doing this, and will not announce it until you see overage charges on your bill.

That makes Netflix quite pointless, because a typical HD Netflix movie is 4GB, so you would pay $8 to watch it, once you go over your pathetically low bandwidth cap that was just quietly reduced!

They did this because Shaw asked the CRTC to heavily regulate Netflix, since it was hurting their own sales, and CRTC declined. Instead, Bell/Shaw asked CRTC to allow usage based billing, and they APPROVED.

If you are a Canadian, rest assured, your ISP will be following Shaw's lead in 2011!

This means there will be a METER attached to your usage, and you will pay for every GB you use in 2011.

It costs ISPs approximately $2-$4 on average, to service a broadband customer. Charging us $50 per month wasn't enough, and now they want much, much more.

  87. I'm new to Netflix, but so far I think its a great value. Little disappointing to see the selection our southern cousins have access to, but I'm hoping its just a matter of time until things are improved up here in Canada. If someone from Netflix is reading this post - Please fix the onscreen menu!! (when browsing selections on the tv) When I first signed up a couple of weeks ago it was clumsy but adequate. Now it is just plain useless! Fix it quickly please. I think that all of your titles should be available to browse on the tv.
    Thanks.

  91. I live in the mid-north of Ontario, so running to a local video sore is not possible.
When I heard about Netflix I was really hoping it could give me my movie 'fix' instead of paying an absurd amount to Shaw satellite for their PPV or movie package.
I signed up about 3 weeks ago and in summary, I'm not impressed with their selection. I'll be canceling my trial subscription this week.
There are just too many movies that are 'not available'. I know that this is a licensing issue but Rogers, who have their own streaming service, closest cable conection is 100 miles from where I live, so it is not an option.
I use the Wii interface and it is very friendly. I think Netflix is a great business idea but they've got to get their licensing deals worked out or they'll be marginalized.
Hey Netflix (I assume you read your own blog) please keep me in the loop as you add content and I'll rejoin when you post something I want to see or haven't lready seen.\

  95. Still disappointed in the selection for Canada...plus I suggest when doing TV commercials for Netflix Canada showing happy customers, use actual Canadian customers, not US customers who had the service for a few years with a ton of content more than Canada. That is false advertising as how can a Canadian customer be a Netflix customer since 2008 for example since Netflix has only been in Canada less than a year?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hi guys,

Look I just want to take the opportunity to thank you for the great service you offer and ask you for a show (actually a documentary). I am pretty sure a lot of people would enjoy it and the makers would be happy to share it with you guys.

It is called ROOT OF ALL EVIL? It is presented by Richard Dawkins and it hasn't been shown in America.

    Keep it up.

  102. I've been enjoying Netflix Canada since it first arrived. However, the recent change to the menu on my PS3 has left me puzzled. The original layout was simple, slick and made navigation easy but sometime in December it was replaced with a clunky, almost juvenile interface. Is there anyway I can go back to the original one because I'm getting tired of using my PC to search for titles. Regards.

    ReplyDelete
  103. When is your content for Canada going to improve? I feel like asking for my money back, and I'm only doing the free trial still. We pay the same amount as the States and get 30% of the content? We should only pay 30% of the price if that's the case.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Hey Netflix...I live in Michigan & when I try to watch movies online I receive an error code telling me that I can't stream movies in Canada. I don't live in Canada & last week was watching them just fine so what's the deal? When I search the error code on your site I'm told it doesn't exist!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. More content from CBC? Are you kidding? The whole reason for considering a Netflix subscription is so I don't have to watch the crap on CBC. Do you think we (potential customers) are stupid - obviously you do! Give us what is available to American customers and I will sign for life!!!

    ReplyDelete
  106. PLEASE bring back the old PS3 interface. I have tried to get used to the new version but it is just awful. If the new interface stays then I won't.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Still not good enough. Dexter. Now.

Comparable pricing to the US consumers, but NO selection. Robbery.

Get it together. We are tired of stealing the shows Americans get practically for free legally.

  109. I have been a Netflix Canada viewer from day 2 of the launch. And I was excited about the $8 a month price… but I will pay more… $10 per month, if you will just get something more than the ‘B’ movie selection.

Let me echo what may before have stated:
    • I want more than the $4.99 nobody bargain bin DVD movies from Wal-Mart.
    • I want a queue that I can put movies into when I finally find a movie that I might watch later.
    • I want recommendations for movie which ARE AVAILABLE… Everything I look for I CAN NOT WATCH!
    • I want $6 back for each month I have had a subscription for all the movies that I could not watch.
    • I want movies that were release in the last 2 years.

On the positive side, the service works and the stream quality is good. Now get some freak’n movies that I actually want to watch.

Here are some Old Movies that you don’t even have:
    • Tuck Everlasting - 2002
    • Jurassic Park – 1993
    • The Chronicles of Narnia – 2005
    • The Lord of the Rings – 2001
    • Star Wars – Anyone – 1977-2005
    • 300
    • Shrek
    • Any Disney classic
    • Sherlock Holmes

    Sad.. really sad.

  110. You guys seriously need to improve the content. There's nothing to watch and it's honestly going to be a waste of 8$

  112. I'm sorry but this is absolutely horrible, i've been keeping up with netlix because I KNOW you just launched a few months ago. But honestly, where are all the recent movies? I haven't seen a thing on there that has come out later than 10 months ago. They are all 2nd and third rate films. Where are the good TV SHOWS? Dexter? Lost? Criminal Minds?? I mean honestly, get your stuff together, I'll rejoin once I see progress.

  118. Just filled out a survey and it asked for movies/genres I like, then the survey moved onto titles so I could rate them individually so you can suggest movies. Great idea except 90% of the movies you wanted me to rate are not available to Canadian subscribers! WTF? Is this some kind of cruel and unusual tease? I have subscribed since late October, because I know the content in the U.S. and was hoping it would come here too.

There are alot of good suggestions here for improving the service and of course pleas for more content and more recent movies. I hope someone is reading this. Can someone from Netflix comment on why it takes so long to get content or lack thereof?

I am still staying on, hoping for better content, but eventually if it doesn't come I will end my membership.

    Thanks

  119. love the commercial free content, and a great price too, but wait!! here in Canada our internet service providers are cutting our bandwidth limits waaay back, and increasing our costs AND even throttling!! Making Netflix difficult to justify. I passed my bandwidth in the first half of the month, and charged $2.00 a gig overage!! Canadian Internet Providers SUCK!! They just don't get it... and far too greedy...

  120. I signed up with Netflix in the first week it came out. I have to say I am truly disappointed with the selection of movies/tv shows that are currently available through your service. I know it is a brand new service and it takes time. But every month, when I wait for the new arrivals, I end up being disappointed with the updates. A lot of the movies/shows are either unheard of, or are just too old. Now, there are the shows/movies from the past, people do not mind watching and actually like having it one click away, but is netflix only just a low priced service simply because it offers a lackluster collection of movies and shows? I hope the new year brings better collection of movies/shows, otherwise most people will be going back to premium cable service or zip.ca.

    ReplyDelete
  121. OMG! CBC content won't save you. Only 1 in 10 Canadians ever tune to CBC. Most of it is left wing garbage.

I cancelled my Expressvue movie channels as soon as Netflix became available in Canada, because I was fed up with the narrow selection of movies on satellite. They filled their time slots with tired TV series. Don't get caught up in the same trap. I can watch TV on TV. What I want is commercial free movies, not some 20 part series that will take weeks to get through!

I have to say that I am very disappointed with the movie selection so far. Most are B movies (at best) and so old that they are freely available on DVD at my local library.

Come on guys! We want you to be successful in Canada, beacuse we need viable options to cable and satellite, but for Netflix to keep that subcription base growing, you have to deliver much more.

I am giving it one more month.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I've just subscribed(in Canada) and am a little disappointed in the selection of movies. Most seem to be made for tv or b movies. actually maybe c or d movies. Since the first month's free I'm willing to give it a chance but I can see my family getting bored pretty fast.My daughter couldn't even find the first Harry Potter movie which is pretty old.Hope the selection improves.

    ReplyDelete
  123. You people amaze me. If you don't like the content that is currently offered save us all from your constant crying and moaning and just cancel and come back later like you know you will.

It takes awhile to add content especially if there's some red tape holding things up. If Netflix could offer the exact same content they offer the USA they would. Let them work out the kinks and be thankful for what you do have to watch or like i said shut up and leave.

  124. Lol who is this guy? A Netflix employee it sounds like. Tell your employer to stop ripping off Canadians.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I'm supporting Netflix because I'm disappointed with the cable monopoly in Canada and Shaw! Lots of channels for the latter but limited variety and too many repeats. I feel stupid watching tv these days.

People at Netflix, please keep up the good work with pushing for more deals.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I subscribed to the free trial today. Was disappointed in the movie selections. Every time i search for a movie or a series it is not available. I was going to cancel my movie channel on my Bell express vue but after seeing this I will probably stay with them and cancel my netflix after my free trial until you get more selections and new releases. You will get a lot more customers if you do.

    ReplyDelete
  127. The Netflix selection in Canada blows chunks (it sucks) and they aren't adding new content at a fast enough clip. New content they are adding is still crap.

I am probably going to cancel in 1-2 months if the situation doesn't improve.

I find myself most of the time searching for something interesting to watch but most of the time end up disappointed.

They should get their act together or cancel the service altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Why are the people in the US wishing they could watch the crappy Canadian TV shows we have here?

And look, still no Simpsons. C'mon Netflix... Pay the damn syndication fee.

    ReplyDelete
  129. WOW - there are sure a lot of whiners out there, and expectations of what they should be getting for $7.99 a month.
I signed up from day 1 and am relatively satisfied.
Licensing is a huge task to overcome and is different in Canada then the US or they could have just allowed access to Canada from the US site but new deals need to made from each distribution company. And then there's the CRTC rules
I have found more then enough content looking through the library to keep me satisfied. I know if I was looking for a particular title 9 times out of ten it probably won't be there.
It's still early for them here in Canda so I expect the library to keep growing.
It's not going to replace my existing services but at $7.99 I didn't expect it to, but it does add to my viewing enjoyment and that makes it worth it for me.

  130. Yet another employee praising the great Netflix. Lol at least it's amusing...

  131. Very small catalog, even with the updates. Complete rip-off for Canadians. Also, I can't view any of the categories you limit on Xbox and iPhone. Lame. I'll be cancelling likely next month. I could understand the limited content if there was a cheaper price than what the Americans pay (ya they pay $1 extra for DVDs, but who cares when the streaming content is brutal). Arg!

    ReplyDelete
  132. Please add "Six Feet Under" to the lot. It has to be one of the best series ever.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Don't hype getting the Tudors when only the first season is available.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Two comments:
You need to increase your catalog of films quickly or risk putting off the current base of customers, who will then tell two friends how meager your selection is, and so on and so on. In hindsight you should then offer some form of compensation to your current faithful customers for starting up before you had a decent streaming selection.

When the regulators move the goalposts for data streaming, and we are henceforth charged for the bandwidth we use, I think it would be a great gesture for Netflix to ABSORB this themselves or they may risk losing their entire base.

Another point is, if you are going to begin to "infiltrate" us it would be a good idea to tap into the HUGE UNSEEN base of Canadian movies sitting in the archives at Telefilm, and allow Canadians to actually see them all since the distributors and movie theatres are not promoting them, maybe YOU can at least make an effort to acquire them.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Frustrated with limited content and even more frustrated that even "The Tudors" which I am at least giving a shot is limited to Season 1 even though the press release last month indicated all 4 seasons.

When will the remainder be available. My patience is wearing thin.

  137. Signed up to Netflix...Comments:

    - Toronto/GTA is a very multicultural city. Globally we have an increased population (incl. Toronto) where the elderly would like to watch more international content such as movies from back home. Based on city/town demographics offer applicable international programming.
Allow even member feedback to provide which international movies they would like to watch and based on voting system offer titles.
    - Increase content with more options (especially kids) and newer movies too.

    Thanks...

  138. Very Disappointed in this service. Great promise but in the end your movie selection is very poor.

New movies are available to rent throughout Canada but not on Netflix - so what is the point?

I will continue to support you to see if you can work this out but frankly I am back to Blockbuster and movies on demand through cable services.

You need to communicate what you are doing about this issue.

    ReplyDelete
  139. pI would like to talk about the type of movies being presented on Netflix, you have a wide people veiwing yet I feel Netflix has lost something I can never see any movies that I like I mean why is movies from 1988-2000 have to be ordered through the mail and why is the Africain American section not in the queue You have some selections but not many... I just love your service but things do need to change. On your queue your new releases are getting older and older the movies and are on On-Demand. I use to get your movies 1 month in advance to the other stations but now they are new releases that you can find anywhere. Please take all the in account...just wanted to let you know how I feel

  140. I am very happy with netflix, however I did prefer the previous interface for the PS3 and would love to see it or something like it come back.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I agree with Thomas, we are considering staying on but may discontinue if the movie library is not updated. We have heard that in the US the movie selection is WAY better.... Movies like Avatar are available... Please let us know.
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  142. I didn't think it was possible for Netflix Canada to make their PS3 interface worse than it already was, but today they did it: they've eliminated the "Recently watched" category entirely.

I'm in the middle of a season of a TV show on Netflix. Now, when I want to watch the next episode, the ONLY WAY for me to do so is to Search for the title.

Seriously: did you guys hire an 8-year-old to design your interface? No way to queue movies, no way to sort by rating, and now NO WAY TO VIEW RECENTLY WATCHED TITLES.

I don't expect a lot for $8 a month, but this has gotten ridiculous. How is it possible that you're actually making the interface WORSE over time?

  145. I can't seem to find an email account to send a comment or concern to so I'm posting it to this blog. I really enjoy netflix instant streaming, but i'm tired of having soft pornography come up in instant streaming things to watch. I've tired setting the parental controls but it blocks out rated R movies that I might want to watch, and not rated ones documentary. Its a pain how the settings for it is set up. If it could be more family friendly because I for one don't like looking for something to watch with a kid in the room and half naked people come up. Maybe if you had setting for removing just unrated ones in the search or change it so ones that are soft porn dont come up some how. Thanks

  146. I too am wondering when we Canadians are going to a get a 'queue' feature on the page. It is extremely frustrating to hunt and peck for everything that I want to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  147. New movies and more TV shows are a definite must - not quite sure why the content would differ so much from the US. And releasing Weeds season 1 and 2 makes no sense when there are 5 ....you're slacking!!

    ReplyDelete
  148. I agree.
    although the movie collection is
quite diverse, the quantity of library can only be described as
"Pathetic".It is sad because the site really is well made.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Same, come on Netflix....beef up the new movie selection in the Canadian catalog. I will say that I have enjoyed using NetFlix so far but more and more often now I find myself searching for a movie in the catalog that is only available to NetFlix users in the U.S. I realize NetFlix is new in Canada but if you want more people to sign up….then give us the same selection as the U.S consumers.

    ReplyDelete
  154. It's great that they are adding more content to Canada site.. however, the browse/search capability is very limited... you either have to know and type the name of content in to search for it or to select something from the limited main screen choices.

What would be wonderful to see is an A to Z listing of all content!

    ReplyDelete
  155. Netflix prevents you from emailing them for customer service. I have an issue with gift subscriptions but the place that reads "Contact Us" is a lie, it does not let you contact them, only allows you to click boxes for preset answers as. I have went through each of the links at bottom of netflix web page with no way to contact them online. They online contact block you. :o(

    ReplyDelete
  156. I am so very disappointed with your movie selection. I also wonder why you bother giving us reviews of movies that we cannot see (example, Easy Virtue)... And I will certainly not be renewing my subscription at the end of the month!

    ReplyDelete
  157. When will you have The Venture Bros.: Season 4 vol 2 available??

    ReplyDelete
  158. I am here because there is no other way to contact customer service online, and I have no intention of holding for ten minutes in order to be disconnected for not having signed up yet.

I agree with ThisOldCoder, who had commentary on the price/selection. I haven't signed up for a free trial, and I have no intention of doing so. Now, I would love - love - to sign up for the service. Eight dollars a month, compared to my last $60 cable bill, is a fantastic price. The problem is that I can't get any shows I want to see! I can't get any movies, either.

I understand that getting the licensing in Canada is a pain. However, I can't justify spending any money on a service I won't use because the content is uninteresting to me.

I'm currently checking back every so often and looking to see if you have True Blood available. In the meantime, I just purchase DVDs in the US and hope for the best.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Heeeeelllloooo Netflix? Anyone home? You don't allow us to contact you, nor do you reply to our comments. Is this how you keep your 16 million subscribers happy, by ignoring them? Nice.

  160. I really love netflix, just two suggestions I wish that there was a way to add items to a favorites list so you can pick out things to watch without having to search every time you want to watch something also a the ability to create profiles so you can separate the adult content from children's content....

    ReplyDelete
  161. Alot of people want more movies but I usually only have about 30 minutes that I can watch so I prefer 30 minutes shows and MMA

    ReplyDelete
  162. Please change the PS3 interface back as the new one is really taking a step back in usability.

Please add a queue option that we can load up with movies that we want to watch in the future.

    Please add more content.

    ReplyDelete
  163. That's great news, but when can we expect the instant queue. I have been with Netflix in the US for years until I moved to Canada.I was so disappointed to see the queue is not here. I have always been a big fan of Netflix, but you can't offer a lesser catalogue and a lesser control system. Something's gotta give.

    ReplyDelete
  164. To say that your Canadian selection sucks is a gross understatement - it is downright insulting. It's worse even than Shaw on Demand. I'll stick to torrent sites (legal in Canada), thank you very much.

    ReplyDelete
  165. YAAAAY! stuff from canada that I already get! give me a break! you cease to amaze me netflix. I love how you find B movies with the same title as big name ones that I want to watch District 13... all right.. oh wait it's a piece of garbage B movie... it's been 3 months of watching the garbage pile I can't believe I was sticking up for your service for two months... maybe you should have launched in Britain like originally planned, cause you're doing a terrible job here

    ReplyDelete
  166. I think some of you are confused as to the differences between US and Canadian content on the streaming service. It's got nothing to do with the content creators and everything to do with deals Netflix makes with distributors in the US and Canada (ie. Starz in the US, Rogers in Canada). These companies have ownership of different content in different countries so there is no one size fits all content service with no borders.

And it is only $8 for the service. If you don't like it, don't pay for it but don't expect that you're going to get the world's content for only $8 a month.

    ReplyDelete
  167. The selection in Canada is still pretty poor and shows like "The IT Crowd" that I can see cover art for are "Unavailable" (Really love that show)

There are some great old movies....that I have watched many times or already own on DVD/Bluray.

New releases and TV options really, really need to offer more if I am going to continue once my free month is up.

That said. 7.99 is a great price for value compared to paying for the movie channels on cable.

    ReplyDelete
  168. For the love of all things, stop streaming those crappy KNOCK OFF movies. I mean, really you are insulting your customers with titles like "The Day the Earth Stopped" and other rubbish pretending to be the big studio release to cash in on suckers.

I love "B" movies, but these are just cheap insulting knockoffs that appear intended to PAD your movie catalog and give the impression you have greater selection than you do.

    It's insulting.

As for those saying stop whining for 7.99 a month. I would say, I will when I get close to equivalent content that the U.S. subscribers do for the same price. I appreciate that our lower populace means less buying power for Netflix that need to purchase rights to play titles here. But come on.

Just stop streaming knock off titles and bragging about the size of your movie catalog. It's insulting.

***That said, I see a lot of potential for this if the content improves.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Netflix, I really, really, really want to fall in love with you...please get more QUALITY content and make that happen.

  170. WHERE ARE THE MOVIES, I dont want to see movies that are rated 5th no matter how many you add of those. I am not asking to see new movies, I am asking to see movies that are popular even old ones, it cant be all not available........come on.

    We need popular movies....

    ReplyDelete
  171. Netflix for Canada has hardly anything good in it, sure there are a few good titles, but so much is missing! Personally all I really want are the star trek movies, and episodes from star trek the next generation, and voyager. Please Netflix thats all I ask......

    ReplyDelete
  172. As a very satisfied user of Netflix in the USA where I can obtain an unlimited amount of content using a LG bluray DVD player I would hope upon moving to Canada in May 2011 to have the same content available as well as ability to get the service with the same device.Picture quality here in Florida is superb, especially for HD content.

    ReplyDelete
  173. Don' count on anything from Netflix Canada. They won' t even reply to or talk to there customers here typical online company that is only out for greed. Canada has terrible services when it comes to tec/internet/cell and we get charged double that of US residents even when our dollar is higher. Canada is a money grab that wants no compitition allowed in so they can keep raping Canadians financially. The CRTC is nothing more then a federal tool to help the gov profit. Fk it costs me $80 a mth just to get 3g on my cell. Terrible. Not to mention 0 governance over online companies. So if you get taken good luck. Canada needs to seriously step it up...

    Ty for reading my rant!

    ReplyDelete
  174. It seems that I can find all kinds of movies through searching ( ie Lord of the Rings) but I can't watch them " not available"... is that because I am in Canada??

    ReplyDelete
  175. This is extremely disappointing. Why would Netflix offer this service internationally, to Canada before the U.S. Possessions. How is it possible that living in the US Virgin Islands, I am unable to stream but Canada is? It is not even a part of the 50 states. I think it awful that the places where people just happen to have more melanin are treated like second classes citizens. I thought capitalism was supposed to be the great equalizer.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Netflix is very disappointing they better get a move on.
They will lose the customers that they have if they don't start putting on half descent movies.
They put 7 movies on from Jan 7 to Jan 14. and they are not worth watching anyway. Go to verify http://app.whatsnewonnetflix.com/
I will give them another month and I will stop there service
along with other people I know.
No sense in speding 8 dollars if there is nothing to watch.

  177. The only reason I'm not canceling then reactivating 6 months later is my daughter likes watching the kids shows.Canada is getting ripped off as usual. CRT controls the cable, satalite, internet so the corporations get the most money for the least product. Why not put Netflix in the same catagory? I'm not sure what the numbers are but I've heard we only get 1/4 of what the yanks get. Maybe the CRT got to these guys too

  178. 'State Within" a BBC production had blatant homosexual scenes in it. There was no warning that this film included homosexual scenes. Please address this problem out of respect for your customers.

  179. For about 3 dollars more I can get unlimited movies from Zip.ca. But the difference is they have a proper selection, including new releases. If you can buy it in the stores you can order it from zip.ca.

Until you can compete with this i have no intention of switching to your service.

    Quality over quantity always wins.

And to all you people defending them because it's so cheap so what should we expect, look at what zip.ca offers or what Americans get for their money, or even what you can get through iTunes. It has nothing to do with how cheap the service is. It's value is measured in how it compares with comparable services. And in this regard it doesn't compete. Not by a long shot.

  180. We watched Weeds, Seasons 1 & 2, and got "hooked," so we were really looking forward to seeing the remaining seasons, but none are available. These remaining seasons have been out for YEARS.

I'm also disappointed by the frequent "not available" messages for this, and other titles, we are getting.

I know there are licensing issues, and we can certainly be patient with this aspect of the situation, but it may mean that we will soon find there isn't really very much we want to watch, and so we will likely end our subscription.

Do American subscribers pay the same subscription price as we do? If so, I have to say I don't think we are getting as much for our subscription here in Canada as are our friends to the south.

  181. just give us more HD content...I would be willing to pay 20 dollars a month if the content wasnt so crappy.. All the good shows and movies are not on Netflix Canada...and movies are added at a very slow rate...I dont think the current monthly fee is worth the amount of movies I actually want to watch. So once Canada gets to stream the same content as the US, i will use netflix.

    Customer is always right..

  182. I have just signed up and in my free trial. However, I am very frustrated and disapointed. I attempted to watch the movie "Post Impact" and was interupted every 10 minutes with a ten minute "receiving" download.....I waited longer in receiving then actually watching the movie. I watched 58 minutes of the movie in a two hour span. Nedless to say, I stopped watching the movie before it ended out of pure frustration, as it would have taken four hours to watch a movie that wasn't even two hours long. I did enter the difficulty several times on your netflix "help" site. Not sure if submitting this greavance here will get me any assistance....hope so. Should this continue, I will cancel my membership, as dowloading movies free from the internet will give me the same quality and frustration.

  185. How about adding more devices that are netflix capable? Have you been following the rash of complaints of Canadians that purchased Blu Ray Samsung 1600 and especially WD TV LIVE PLUS HD media players that cannot access NETFLIX Canada but work in the U.S.?

  186. I have been a subscriber since the launch in Canada as i have experience your service in the US. I must say that after 3 months, your content is dreadful.

I am giving your service another month and if things don't improve i will most definitely be cancel this service.

I've never seen such a collection of "B" or even "D" movies in my life!

  187. I see you guys made big efforts to offer some french content to your library.

But if you want to bring new french-speaking customers to your service, you'll have to do much better. Starting by making dubbed versions available and by offering more Quebec blockbusters. And what about a french version for your site?

Still, you guys are doing a good job and I wish you best of luck in Canada.

  188. Every single movie I requested in the Netflix Canada search was not available. Offer the same content as the you do in the USA and I will become a subscriber.

  189. Your one month free subscription is a good idea it lets Canadians know (before paying $7.99 a month) that Netflix Canada does not have much to offer.

  190. This is great news, about a month later and there are a few new TV shows, however, newer "A" list movies are still scarce. I'm starting to look more and more at the good movies that are on my BELL satellite (I swore I would never buy another!)

  191. I dont understand why we had to wait so long for netflix to come to canada and then when we get it we are not able to watch a lot of movies that the U.S can. You show us that the movies are there in the library but we are not able to watch them.

  192. You are going to need to add way more than this to keep customers. How about Six Feet Under? It's kind of unbelievable that you don't have this. I've been hearing about Netflix for years and you finally come to Canada and this is what we get?

What your missing in films is pretty astonishing too. You need to go way, way bigger. I'd be willing to pay more per month if you would be willing to offer me something for it. As it stands now, I am using the free trial version, and so far, I am not impressed. You need to reach farther and wider if you want the customers to stay.

  193. The mere fact that this so called company will not even talk to it's customer's or it's potential customer's should be sending red flags up with all of you.

Typical online company taking profits while crapping on it's customers.

This is currently nothing more then a bad joke.

  195. Any chance of enabling the Plexapp.com plugin for Canadian users to stream Netflix inside their media centre application of choice?

    ReplyDelete
  196. It is good that you started in Canada. But there are not much to watch. I dont' think, I will continue with Netflix after my free trial is over.
many of my favorite shows are not there. Same for movies , even old classics are not available.
Please do add more in your library. I like the service though , streaming is fast and not a problem.

  197. I enjoy some of the programs available on Netflix although the catalogue needs to be expanded to keep me as a customer (there have been some good finds that I may not have seen otherwise).

I am not in the least bit interested in Netflix continuing to purchase Canadian content - this is not why I signed up and will likely be the reason I leave this service.
