Wii and PS3 To Be Disc-Free

This is Greg Peters, VP of product development here at Netflix. If you instantly watch movies and TV shows from Netflix on a Nintendo Wii or a Sony PS3, here is the news you’ve been waiting for: starting today, you’ll be able to watch movies and TV shows without inserting an instant streaming disc into your console. Once you've downloaded the new application, you can recycle the current streaming discs or keep them as a souvenir.

In addition to removing the need for discs, we’ve developed a new user interface on both applications that significantly improves the experience. The new applications will allow you to search for content directly from the device and you’ll also be able to view an increasing portion of our content library with subtitles or alternate audio tracks.

There is even more good news for PS3 owners: starting today you’ll be able to instantly watch some movies and TV shows in 1080p high definition with Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound. Here is a news release from Netflix and Dolby with the details.

Check out these improvements and continue to enjoy watching instantly with Netflix.

  1. Can we have an update on subtitles and how much content has them now? Last word was that it was essentially restricted to the first 5 seasons of Lost.

  2. mine doesn't work?...why is my screen just turning black??

  3. Can we also get the option to put parental control on by device, rather than just completely? or to be able to use the password on the device to allow watching of movies and shows that are above the enforced rating. Really tired of not being able to watch movies instantly on the wii because I enforce the rating restrictions for my children on the xbox.

  4. Wow, I totally agree with you on the parental controls. What I would also like to see is an option that you can just have family and children content and non of the other stuff on such devices as the Wii, Xbox and PS3. Would be great for the kids and peace of mind for us. Going to go check out the subtitle thing myself soon.

  5. Forget disc-less playback, how about some better titles? The current selection is a joke.

  6. I agree on the parental controls by device as well! My kids only watch on the Wii while my husband and I use the computers. I would love to be able to restrict the Wii to the Family category only.

It would also be awesome to be able to block a certain show. Some stuff even on the Family category isn't great for kids.

  7. Sadly, I still can't use any of these benefits since I don't have the unlimited plans which is a total rip. I have 5 hrs. of online streaming that I could use per month, but can't until I upgrade to the $8.99 plan from $4.99.

I don't need unlimited nor the additional monthly cost since we're on a tight budget. We've had to consider dropping Netflix as it is and don't need more than the 2 movies a month anyway. Still, it'd be nice to watch something streaming on our Wii every once in awhile. Don't know why I'm punished for having a plan that fits me best.

  8. I just wish they would make it to where we can see why a movie is rated what it is on the consoles. My 16 year old watches on her XBOX and while I don't mind her seeing violence, I don't want her watching sex scenes and nudity. It would be nice to know if it's in a movie ahead of time.

  9. nice job folks. Would be nice to be able to sort my instant queue by name and etc. When you have a large queue its difficult to remember the movie i'm looking for was added three weeks ago when i put movie x in but not after movies y and z.

  11. "In addition to removing the need for discs, we’ve developed a new user interface on both applications that significantly improves the experience."

The new channel works wonderfully, but I don't see any difference from the disc.. is this something that is coming down the line, or what are the changes to the user interface.. ?

I would LOVE to see the ability to look for other films/shows by thwe same director, actors, etc. i'd love something similar to the site.

I'm hoping there is more content coming down the line soon as well for Canadians, but seriously, it works so well and there is so much there *already* that I'm quite happy. For me (who likes independant and older films anyhow, lol), I haven't had a night when I haven't had anything to watch, and the kids are loving the Thomas and Dora videos. Keep up the good work and looking forward to things getting even better. Thanks! :)

  12. I don't see any details (or links) on how to actually DO this. Sorry if I'm missing something. I'm not very technically savvy. Will new members get this info? My parents signed up yesterday and are planning to use the Wii but are even less technically savvy than I. I'd like to be able to walk them through this process.

  13. Guys - ever hear of "parental controls"? Hell-oooooooo. A family with a with Wii is a family with young kids and needs the ability to monitor and restrict what can be watched. It's been months since this came out, why can't you fix this already?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Already have a PS3™ system?
To watch instantly on your PS3™ system, you need to:

Connect your PS3™ system to the internet
Sign-up for or sign-in to your free PlayStation® Network account
Go to the PlayStation® Network section of the XMB then select "What's New"
Click on the Netflix icon to download and install the Netflix application

    ReplyDelete
  15. Parental control is built into me, I am the parent, and I control what is watched :)

if you can't afford the plan don't complain.

Wow... they finally update so that we don't need the disc and everyone complains....

Netflix, thanks for making my PS3 & Wii disc free, and the new HD for PS3 is awesome!! Thanks for a great service! And congrats on running blockbuster into bankruptcy ( I used to work for them as a kid, and hated it)

  16. HELP!!!!

I own a UK PS3 and the Netflix app refuses to work with it. Also, the disc now redirects me to download the app and says it will expire in 30 days. Am I forever doomed to watching Netflix by connecting my mac to the telly?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jeez, a whole lot of whining here. Parents with children, please actually PARENT your children and stop delegating it to technology. Asking for parental controls is totally reasonable; whining about it in response to a completely unrelated announcement is just pathetic.

Great job, Netflix team. I've been waiting for this update for almost two years, ever since I first heard rumors of the Microsoft exclusive. Can't wait to get home and give it a spin.

    -A Fan

  18. So our free week should start now???

  19. I see no difference in the Wii Interface, other than I notice fewer titles listed per category.

I still don't understand why some titles are completely hidden. I have to think of whatever I can off the top of my head and search for it in the hopes it will be there (and with the current selection in Canada, good luck!)

Why isn't it possible to simply browse and come across all available titles?

Anyway, my membership goes on hold in 4 days until more content is added in Canada.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm so happy this was released. My husband found out this morning and we are both happy that the disc is no longer needed. Very productive in a sense and more convenient :) Thank You.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Will all of it be streaming in 1080p or are there only select titles? If they are only select titles, how can we see if it streams in 1080p?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really would like to see a better selection. Why is the selection in Canada so crappy. We should be able to streaming those just released to dvd movies that are new. This selection doesn't make me wanna stay with netflicks.

  23. I have a ps3 brought from another country. It says "cannot start this progran due to region restriction.." I AM in the US, also I was able to watch Netflix with disc before. Am I going to not be able to watch Netflix after 30 days??

    ReplyDelete
  24. Personally, I have been asking for restriction by device for a while now because my spouse and I work full time, and there are afternoons when my pre-teen and teenage children are home alone and do watch netflix. They are old enough to be home alone, but not old enough to have unlimited watching capabilities. As of right now though, if I restrict the levels by device, we cannot watch some of the shows and movies we like to see instantly that night because it takes up to 8 hrs each time you make changes to apply to instant watch devices. We have one game console in the family room and one in the upstairs living room that no one but us uses, and it would be ncie to be able to restrict by console so that we could fully enjoy the instant watching.

  25. Firstly, you briefly offered a UI where I could scroll down through rows at a fast rate. Your UI has reverted to one like the disc, where I most slowly scroll individually through one long row of all my titles, one at a time (although at least now I may hold down a button.) If possible, it would be highly preferable to utilize this first UI (or at least have the option to change to this browsing style, much like the Playstation Store allows one to change browsing styles.) Secondly, on the disc, when I hovered over a title, it told me if it was an HD title without my having to load the description. That is no longer true via this discless means (and that data all loads so slowly after this UI change, to boot).

These are both likely simple fixes (one is as simple as reimplementing something you already designed). I do hope to see these reversions undone.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh, and for all of you complaining "You should expand your selection!" do you really think Netflix doesn't realize this? Do you honestly believe that the CEO is sitting in his office thinking "No, they wouldn't want too much content now?" Of course not. Netflix wants to offer as much via streaming as they can. Whining at them here won't change a thing, as they already agree with you.

  27. I always crack up at people who don't mind their kids watching violence but heaven forbid I don't want them watching sex scenes (anonomous_) Seriously, watch someone get their head ripped off or body blow apat but a steamy love scene, OMG, we're all going to hell in a hand basket. And we wonder why there's so much violence in the world.

Make love not war people. Get real!!!

  28. Still waiting to hear something about Linux. . . Where is the Linux support?!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Forcing us to be disc-free may be a mistake... Sony has had a new policy for a few months now that requires a PS3 upgrade in order to use Playstation Network. Sadly, we cannot upgrade, so you will effectively be deactivating our streaming capability when the disc stops working on Nov 19.

I wonder how many other people cannot upgrade? It can also take a long time to get the upgrade installed, and it can require several reboots -- are you sure you want people to go through all this? After all, it is not a simple install and that reflects on the Netflix brand.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Really people? If you're concerned with parental controls, then be a parent! It isn't Netflix' or Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft's job to monitor what your kid watches, it's yours! If you don't want them watching certain movies, then either trust your kids, or only let them watch while being supervised. Also, if they don't see it in your living room, they'll likely see it at a friend's house.

  31. Unappreciated CustomerOctober 18, 2010 at 1:17 PM

I called customer service and explained that the whole "disc free" switch creates an inconvenience for customers who do not wish to sign up for invasive networks such as the Play Station Network. I was told something along the lines of, "this is the way it is. We don't want you to cancel your service , but you no longer have the option to use a disc." This renders my Netflix account practically useless considering personal preferences. Options are a necessity in our diverse culture, Netflix!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous said..."Oh, and for all of you complaining "You should expand your selection!" do you really think Netflix doesn't realize this?"

No, I'd just like to see them comment on this, and maybe give us some sort of hope. As it is now, the only way to check for new content is to check what titles are available and notice the ones you haven't seen before. It doesn't help that the New Arrivals section doesn't seem to actually show new arrivals.

I just want to be informed. As of now, I'll be putting my membership on hold specifically for this lack of information.

  33. Just installed the PS3 netflix app and all is working fine. And by all is working fine I mean not really. Two immediate problems, one more serious than the other:

a.) When on the Netflix navigation menu, I get "HDMI" and "Unusuable Signal" display boxes overlaid the picture. I get still get the imagine, but the display boxes are annoying.

b.) More annoying: I can't get sound. And it's not the cable or anything: I just played a video games and the audio worked fine. No, this related to the Netflix app. Please send a patch!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I do monitor what my children watch, hence the parental controls. We do allow them to watch other things when we are present, but we severely limit what they are allowed to watch while we are not home. We don't have cable, we restrict the internet so they can't watch online, etc. and it would be nice to be able to change the way restrictions are set up on netflix instant devices.

Sure, I could quit my job so I could monitor what they watch 24/7, but then we would not be able to afford netflix and such. It's easy to tell someone else how to parent their children when you aren't living their life.

  35. Does PS3 upscale SD content to 1080p?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Disregard my last comment; exited out of the program and went back in and both problems were fixed. And it loaded super quick. Sweet!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Just tried this out. It works and looks great, but you guys took away one important feature.

This new version took away the ability to quit using the circle button. This is important if you have a Bravia TV because there is a button on that remote (Return) that is directly analogous to the circle button, but there is no button that's analogous to the PS button, so the only way to quit is to use a gaming controller (lame), or to get up and manually shut off the machine, which kind of defeats the purpose of going disc-less.

Thanks for the upgrade, but please put this back the way it was.

    ReplyDelete
  38. -just to throw in with the rest - thanks from a wii user on not having to use a disc anymore.
-also agree with others, and have previously stated, and want to reiterate, need more flexible parental controls.
-lastly, want to state again, content in Canada really not what it could/should be.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Can anyone help me?

I try to log in and I keep getting "we're unable to connect you to netflix. Please try gain later" followed by error codes 300 and 201. My connection is fine and everything else seems to be working.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wii can never stream 1080p as the console itself cannot support 1080p, you need a HD console like PS3 or the xbox 360

    ReplyDelete
  43. Who was the Netflix brain trust that sent out a mass email to thousands of PS3 owners about this new feature, but used the email subject "Good News! No disc needed to watch right on your TV with your Wii" making it assured that most of them won't even read it! hahahahahahahahhaa

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks. Really, thanks.

I appreciate not having to locate the disk.
I do hope to see some of the other requests made in this forum turned into new features soon (parental control by box, subtitles).
But for now, I just want to say thanks for getting us completely disc free :)
    Keep up the good work!

  45. Could you please start adding to the movie listings which ones are 5.1 and 1080p? Right now you won't know which movies are 5.1 until you start and impossible to know which ones are 1080p because the app now upscales everything to 1080p.

    ReplyDelete
  46. While I'm certainly glade to have it, a much higher priority for my household would be having multiple account support. I can't understand why you wouldn't give preference to the needs of households who pay for several subscriptions.

  47. omg the disc free thing is horrible! why is this being put out to be a great thing? It was VERY rare to get an interruption with the disk now i get one every 5 minutes. Why are the disks being taken away completely? why cant there be an option?

  48. I figure if I am going to complain when a company does something stupid, I should go on and congratulate something I like. Very well done. I am ecstatic about both the disc-less ps3 setup and the new user interface. Can't say it enough, awesome job. JE, Cincinnati

  50. Can I ask why did the UI change from this morning? I was on earlier today around 1pm EST and the UI was nice and clean and navigation was a breeze (they way it was shown on the PS Blog) but now I get home and the UI has changed to a huge clunky system...why did it change in a matter of a few hrs?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yeah, I'm with the above comment, the interface changed, and it's not great. I'm hoping you go back to the advertised interface. I was pretty psyched about it this morning.

I don't even know where to direct my question. A Google search led me here.

    Should I assume it's a first-day bug?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Darkness.

That is all I have. Are all the people getting just darkness on "fat" PS3s? I am using an 80GB BC Fat PS3 and after downloading and installing the Netflix app all I get upon launch is darkness, nothing else.

So, in 31 days I will no longer be streaming Netflix as that is when the disc stops working, and Sony has pretty told me they don't care.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love the disc-free thing. I just downloaded the app to my PS3 and instantly starting browsing titles. I've always been a fan of your streaming video, and now I love it even more. This is a wonderful idea Netflix. Keep the great ideas coming, and keep the costs low. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Since the disk-free upgrade I love how fast everything loads through the menu and how fast the show starts and 5.1 surround sound. BUT I have noticed a problem with the sound skipping that I have never had a problem with before. I hope they will have a fix for this real soon. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Trying to watch Star Gate Universe and the audio doesn't match up since having to switch from the disc to the software on the PS3

    ReplyDelete
  56. I also noticed on the PS3 app there is excessive amount of overscan and a lot of the picture is lost. Could there please be a way to adjust the PS3 Netflix app for overscan, so the picture could be centered and brought into the screen? My HDTV has no such adjustments.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Don't know if anyone has touched on this topic yet but if its possible a play list feature would be great. so i could watch episodes 1 through 5 of say family guy without the need to select each one after the last ended.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Is there a way to tearn off the subtitles that auto-pop up? for example, when i go to "new arrivals: movies" and start goign down through the rows, the auto popup comes up with a brief description of that movie/show. If i wanted that I would click "x" for details. It is really distracting especially when it slightly overlaps the image for the movie on the row beneath it. A one line popup perhaps that has move rating, and whether it's HD or not and title would be better. no need for the description there

    ReplyDelete
  59. Unfortunately I am very disappointed with the PS3 app. There are some UI issues I can discuss later, but the main problem is output resolution.

With the disc rev, Netflix output at native resolution from the PS3. SD content was 480i, HD was 720p. With the app on the other hand, there is no option for native resolution. Everything is output at the fixed resolution the XMB displays in.

I have an external video scaler, and this change is extremely disappointing for my use-case. While I understand this change yielded an easier implementation and that the percentage of people using higher end scalers is limited, it's very upsetting when you have a feature one day and it's gone the next.

I'm really hoping this can be addressed.

    ReplyDelete
  60. YES...thanks Netflix and Playstation for adding the instant disc-free. It's great to be rid of that annoying disc.

    ReplyDelete
  61. ugh. new ps3 interface is very slow to load if it does at all. The UI is horrendously bad. Not sure who thought going to that layout was a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Having a ton of problems trying to connect to Netflix after we installed the new app on our ps3. A ton of lagging, errors, or it won't connect. I really don't think this is working. It starts to connect, retrieve files, and then it just lags. Does anyone else have this problem?

    ReplyDelete
  63. Would be great if it worked. Keeps looping from signing in to retrieving titles and back again. And I can already tell it's still going to look like crap. Oh well. Guess the PS3 stays relegated to Blu-Ray player, where the Xbox keeps the gaming, Netflix, and movie rental duties.

Seriously, at this point, if the PS3 failed I'm not sure I would replace it with another since standalone blu-ray players are so cheap now.

  66. Unfortunately, I have several PS3s and I don't have them all connected to the PlayStation network because they are only used as media players. Personally, I think it sucks that I now have to have PlayStation network accounts for these devices just to log into a separate account through NetFlix.

Someone explain to me the reason why it was deemed necessary to login into the PlayStation network?

Sorry, I think this a case where innovation sucks.

And the format is smaller and more confusing.

Another stunt like this and goodbye
    Netflix.

Our ps3 is just for netflix but the better part of an hour was spent giving personal information to the folks over at the PlayStation Network.

I don't want crap in my email box or my home mail box. I pay money every month to watch movies without

What was wrong with the disc people? When you watch a DVD or BluRay you gotta put a disc in anyways? Who is complaining about the disc? I was happy with it.

Not happy anymore. My free trial is over in a couple weeks and if they don't resolve this, I am not continuing Netflix. My mom has it anyways. I wanted my own account to get DVD's sent to my place. I could just use her account to stream movies to my lappy. I'm not paying for this B.S.

Netflix has lost it with this agreement with sony and netflix has now locked me out of my sony player unless I agree to the sony terms. My old netflix dvd won't play and it doesn't stream movies anymore. When I called netflix customer service and they said there is nothing they can do to restore the service. This is the first BIG mistake Netflix has made. Very poor customer service.

  76. I downloaded the new Netflix app for PS3 and just wanted to say, great job, it looks great and works really well! HD capability was a nice touch, too. What was missing before has been fixed in a big way.

Now we need more instant titles!

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love the disc free concept, though I don't like having to sign up for PSN. I'm also not a fan of the new interface, but Netflix provides a service that it worth dealing with all of that.

I'd also like to mention that I'd gladly pay double or more for you to put all of your titles on instant play.

  79. I also would like an option to not have to sign in to PSN. It seems to require it to start the Netfilx app, and then after that it still works if I sign out of PSN.

What's the point of signing in then? I'm already signed into my Netflix account, so what does that have to do with my PSN account?

  81. The diskless PS3 option is a nice idea but it does not work for me, Sony forces you to take the latest firmware upgrade before you can login go their network for the upgrade. Since I do not want the changes they are making I guess I'm out of luck with Netflix. We've tried repeatedly to use the disk but it keeps forcing us to download the upgrade via the PS3. This change wasn't thought out very well

  84. Wii interface complaint:

You guys took out one of features that set the Wii Netflix interface apart from the others.

I'm talking about the queue slider. You used to be able to instantly go to any part of your instant queue or other queue/category.

NOw you can't. Please bring it back and integrate it into the new interface.

Thank goodness it is still there for the playback slider.

  85. Thank you, Netflix for all your hard work. I have a Wii and once the software downloaded (so smoothly with no hassle) the IU is....flawless. I love the fluidity of the scrolling, the synopsis previews, heck, even the background color. I could not be happier with this new addition to my Wii start menu, nor with Netflix as a whole. Best investment I've made, and makes Christmas much easier on my family, too.

    Thanks! A, KY

  86. WTF - I get a screen that says I can use the disc for 31 more days, then it never lets me past the "install the app" screen. Call support and they have no clue how to bypass this. You guys need to get your shizzle together.

  87. I have two Wii players. Thanks for the new Netflix channel. It makes it so much nicer not to load a disk to watch Netflix. Installation was easy and I can't see a difference between the disk version and the channel version. Keep up the hard work and please don't give up on adding new content for Canada, even if this would mean an increase to a premium streaming service to have the same content as the US side.

  88. What happened? The interface of the app when downloaded first thing Monday morning was like the video demoed last week. Then later in the day the interface changed to some craptastic version that is cluttered - no description of movies as they are highlighted, no way to know if it's HD or SD without selecting every single film individually.

  90. PS3:
I agree, I liked the interface when it was released this morning as advertised on the Playstation Blog where you can scroll up/down.

Also I liked having the back button where if you were at the beginning of the list, you can push the back button to go to the end of the list.

Interface does look a little cleaner, and more visually appealing, but I liked the up/down navigation and the back button.

I don't mind logging into the PSNetwork, but I don't see why you 'need' to. But then don't you need a Xbox live account to stream Netflix anyway? We have a 360, but don't use it for Netflix. That is just our backup system and secondary gaming system.

Please revert back to the first released interface. I like the 'gallery' look of looking at movies, but with better navigation (not just a forward option).

Thank you for making some of our 'suggestions' come true with disc-free streaming.

  91. This is ridiculous.

The UI of the version that was released this morning was the reason I cancelled my Xbox Gold account. Now I sign in tonight and the UI has changed to another terribly laggy and horrible UI that I cannot even use.

The fact that you guys changed it from something good to something terrible just shows how little faith I have in this.

Thanks for releasing something and then screwing it up with this terrible UI that was perfectly fine this morning which was exactly like the demo you guys showed off.

This UI now is completely pathetic and worthless.

  94. People asking for parental controls: Log in to your account on the Netflix website. Select "Your Account & Help" at the top. Down the page under Preferences is "Change parental control setting".

Here you can select the movie rating cap you wish you allow on your account. Restricted titles will still be visible on your Xbox/PS3/Wii, but when you try to play restricted titles, it will not be allowed.

Yes, it is currently a bit of a hassle if you share the same account as your children, as you'll need to change the parental rating every time you want to watch more restricted content yourself.

  95. The convenience of being able to use Netflix without a disc on PS3 is great and all but I really miss two big features that were part of the disc version. The ability to know if a title was in HD while browsing and the ability to browse with title details. Both of these options seem to be completely missing now and I can no longer use my Netflix disc. Please bring these features back or just let me continue to use the Netflix disc. Having to stop and dig into every title just to get a full description is horrible compared to how it was on the disc version.

  98. I'm contacting the BBB in the morning. I am a subscriber to the Netflix service and bought a PS3 for use with gaming and the updated Netflix application that is discless and was purchased strictly because of the demo that was shown in the video of the new updated UI.

This UI is not available. It was, and it is now gone. This is false advertisement, and it is illegal.

The BBB will hear about this tomorrow morning, and you just lost a customer.

  106. I downloaded the app and I hate it.
First off it took several attempts for Netflix to start up and then it lagged so badly that I quit and put the disc back into my PS3. Yes, it is more convenient to not have to put a disc in but at least with the disc there was no lag and it starts up right away. This to me is a complete failure. I used to stream on my xbox and although there were minor lagging issues I could still watch a movie just fine. Watching movies on the PS3 without a disk did not work at all for me. FAIL....I will continue to use the disc.

  107. FYI to the Wii owners. The Wii is not a hi-def device so for those of you asking when 1080 streaming will come to the Wii it is impossible. Its like trying to play blue-Ray in an old DVD player.
There is nothing that can be done about it.

    ReplyDelete
  108. LOL, Another FYI to those of you complaining about the screen being reduced to a "box" when watching TV shows, This is because of the higher resolution. Now that the movies and shows can be stremed in 1080 certain Movies an TV shows will not use the entire screen. The screen is compressed for higher resolution. If it played in full screen it would be blury.

  109. I really like netflix and the way they take care of issues. The only thing they could do better is become more thoughtful of the def. My daughter was born def and we have watched tv for years with close captioning and when the netflix cd so we could watch movies on the Wii came out I thought it would be great but was disappointed when my daughter couldn't enjoy the movies with us due to no close captioning. Please work on this! I would rather have close captioning then the no CD option on the Wii

    ReplyDelete
  110. What I would love to see is PS3 step up to the game and get the subtitles on the screen as an option just as the Wii and the computer has already done!

  111. Seriously, what happened to the UI? I downloaded and started the app yesterday morning, it was a thing of beauty. The grid view was fast, it provided a ton of information without having to go in and out of movie detail screens, and most importantly it was the UI that was demoed over on the PS3 Blog.

I come home after work, excited to watch some netflix with this awesome new interface. No update, no download, I just get some blocky, sluggish, buggy interface that is just plain awful.

What happened? Why go from awesome working software to terrible barely functional software.

I love Netflix, but this change makes me want to cancel my account.

  113. Wah, wah, wah. In this day in age, people want everything in an instant. When they get it, all they do is complain. Want some cheese with that whine? How many of you have Facebook accounts or something of the like? They collect plenty of info from you as well. So does your ISP and plenty of other services on the 'net. Get over having to create a PS network account. It's not like you use that as your main account for email, etc. As for parental control features, just lock up the controllers during the week. Kids always find a way to watch content that they're not supposed to. That's life.

  114. Thank you for this upgrade! Now, what to do with 3 million discs!
    :-)

It actually got me thinking about returning the disc to Netflix. The fact is, I'd be willing to send you every DVD in my collection for recycling / redistribution if, in return, you made that title an "instant view" option in my Netflix account.

Sounds like a win/win proposition to me. What do you think Netflix?

To everyone else... calm down and give them more than 24 hours to work out the bugs. If you're all going to stop using Netflix because of some kinks that need to be worked out, maybe you should stop using computers completely... Windows has more bugs than you can shake a stick at.

  119. Subtitles .. WHY do you not have them on all titles that have them on the disc version ??

Here in region 1 .. USA .. there are regulations about TV and DVD's having subtitles / captions .. ( the same rules that mandate the inclusion of close caption decoders in tvs )

Does the government have to step in ?? Can netflix be considered a "Video Program Provider" in this context ?

They have shown that "they have the technology" .. Yet they simply refuse to do it ..

  120. Quick question, if it has not been answered. I had a bunch of HD vids in my instant cue. When I try to view them now, with the new Discless Netflix, they are no longer streaming HD, not even 720p. IF that is the case, I would rather use the disc.

I didn't even really mind the disc, but thought it was sweet when Netflix emailed me and said that all I had to do was download an app from the Playstation store and i wouldn't need the disc. So obviously I downloaded the app, and it didn't work! Just blackness! I've tried restarting the ps3, trying the disc again, trying to download the app again but nothing works! I can hear it clicking between options so i know something is happening. When i put the disc in it just takes me to the install app screen and won't go past it so i can't even use the disc anymore! Im hoping this is a tiny kink in the netflix app that they will fix within the week or else goodbye netflix.

  123. My biggest problem so far has been with audio sync and titles that were 16:9 when played via disc are now SD with the aspect ratio screwed up (like 16:9 compressed to 4:3). The spiffy new UI is fast, but I question the design decision to have UI elements overlap. How about some AR detection? It's not like there's a space shortage on a 16:9 display to spread stuff out a few pixels so it doesn't overlap.

    ReplyDelete
  124. So happy about the discless update. Before, I would have to pause playback on my PS3 and hope I would get HD when I unpaused.

  130. Running without the streaming disk is only a small benefit; one I was not looking for. Now, however, I have to log into the PSN every time I go to watch something on netfix. Why is that? Is sony now tracking everything I watch on netfix? I really don't like this. If I find out my info is going to sony, good by netfix.

  133. I'm having the same issue that many people are having since my PS3 was bought in Japan (I lived there for many years but I am now living in the US). It would be an easy switch to change from region restriction based on IP instead of hardware and still prevent people from outside the U.S. and Canada from watching Netflix. I'm kind of angry because I just signed up last week for Netflix so that I could take advantage of the no-disc feature. However, unless the region blocking problem is fixed by the end of the month, I'll have to cancel my account because the service becomes pretty useless for me. I understand this is probably a Sony problem but they definitely won't do anything about it besides tell me to buy another Playstation. Please, Netflix take care of this problem for loyal subscribers who were living abroad at one point or another. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

  134. Overall I really like the disc-free PS3 Netflix but I have one suggestion: Include something showing which titles are in HD and which titles are subtitled without forcing the user to start the title. Otherwise, this is major improvement on the previous version.

  135. Thank you Netflix. I've never said this about a company (actually I usually feel the other way) but you guys are AMAZING. Really, when we signed up for netflix we paid $10+/mo for a handful of movies each month. We've (me, wife, and 3yo) now grown so used to streaming I cant tell you the last time we used our DVR. And now, we dont even have to worry about putting the disc in to stream. The most unbelievable part, its all included in the same fee we've always paid. I wish all companies worked this hard to KEEP their customers happy.

  141. Thanks for the update -- but I have an older Mitsubishi HDTV that does 1080i and 480p over component cables. And on 1080i, there's so much overscan that N on the Netflix logo on top left is cutoff and on the right side, the description of the titles are cutoff. Not a happy camper right now. I want my old disc-based app back -- at least it didn't overscan that much. :(

  143. I have no interest in signing up for the Playstation Network. I don't know if Netflix has any control over this, but it's a deal-breaker for me and I won't be continuing with Netflix if this condition remains (since the disc will apparently stop working soon).

  145. Here's one more unhappy customer. The streaming disc doesn't let you bypass the install screen even though it says it continues to work for 30 days. It doesn't! I can't install the Netflix app either for the same reasons so many people already complained about, i.e., the forced Sony system upgrade with for me unacceptable terms. So I'm basically locked out.

  147. At first I was rather excited about this new feature. I hated having to leave the disk in my Wii and putting the extra wear on the cdrom drive. However, now that the application is here, I have some major issues that make using streaming to the Wii almost completely unusable.

I don't have the greatest internet connection and I have pauses at times, we have lived with this, we just restart the video when it hangs up. However, with the new disk-less app, the video stream will no longer restart without reseting the entire application and waiting for it to re-load. Load times are slightly better but when this happens 2-5 times for a 45 minute program (or longer for movies) this pretty much makes it a show stopper.

The other issue I have is the nice quick scrolling that the cd based application is really missed. I tend to keep our instant queue filled up so scrolling through 500 items can take a while. The search feature does make this somewhat helpful but you have to know what you have. This may not be a problem for me as much over time but it was an un-welcome change from the mostly working interface that was there previously.

Where are all these 1080p movies that have been alluded to in your announcement? 152. Hello Greg Peters,

I really enjoy netflix overall, but I am bewildered by the PS3 app. I expected to be able to just click on it and access my netflix, alas, I must also login to Sony's network!!! I HATE this. I have a Panasonic with Vieracast and also a Wii and neither of them require additioinal login to view netflix. So why does sony require this? It was not necessary when we had to use the disc to watch netflix...personally I prefer the inconvenience of the disc to having to constantly login. Is there any possibility of correcting this oversight?

I do not need to be logged in to play or watch ANYTHING from the playstation network, once downloaded, its on my HDD and I can watch or play whenever I want. I should easily be able to do the same with netflix. Due to this access restriction I will no longer utilize the PS3 to view netflix.

I do not know if you would ever honestly reply to this post or take this seriously, but due to this inconvenience as a paying netflix customer I really would prefer this to be corrected in a future firmware update or app update to remove this bothersome feature.

I am really disappointed because I was looking forward to using the PS3 version to watch netflix. I suspect you were muscled by sony to require this and please don't get me started on that, but I hope you care enough about and respect your customer base to address the issues that inhibit netflix from truly being the fun and convenient entertainment it was intended to be.

    Sincerely,

    Warren

  154. First, Kudos to adding searching on the previous version... and finally being able to release a channel/app version installed directly on the system.

I hope that development of the app/channel doesn't end now.

Here's my wishlist for future updates (in order of most desired to least):

    - Continuous playing of the instant queue (aka hulu style, so I don't have to do anything to play the next episode or movie)

    - Multiple queues - as my family members like different movies/tv shows it'd be nice if we could have 2 queues or some # of custom queues for adults and kids, movies vs tv shows (though I doubt this will happen as Netflix would prefer that the wife/kids get their own accounts...). Not specifically an app issue, site wide really, but it'd be nice to have it added to the app too.

    - Ability to say "never recommend this" on suggestions... I get the same suggestions over and over, some of movies I've seen and already rated, others of movies I'm not interested in currently and others that are already in my instant queue... I'd still like to be able to search for them, but I'm tired of the same suggestions over and over (even ones that are already rated and ones that are already in my instant queue!!!).

    - Drag and play instantly of the progress bar - rather than going into that scene selection that takes time to load - make that another button or option for the scene selection feature.

    - Show more than 2 pages of search suggestions

    - Sorting of queue on the Wii/PS3... drag and drop or other method

    - The ability to browse the full unsorted by suggestions, but sortable by date list of new movies and tv shows, maybe as pages rather than one line scrollers on the console.

    - Recent TV show episodes -- again like Hulu -- not just box sets of TV shows, but recent individual episodes. I know this isn't an app feature, which is why I added it lower on my list... but it'd be nice if licensing could work out a deal.

  168. Works great for me. Even SD movies look fantastic. Haven't seen any 5.1 yet, but have watched HD and it works like a charm. Nice, smooth interface, much better than the disk. Dunno what you all are complaining about, mine works great. Would like to be able to browse the entire library of streaming content from the PS3. If you want to stream to a linux desktop, why are you asking about it in a blog about the PS3 and Wii? This is for people that want to watch movies on a TV... Best 9 bucks a month I have ever spent. Hopefully they will continue to add features and make this a cable killer!

  169. Here is my feedback for what it is worth. Overall the interface looks to have been made worse such as being more mobile device friendly and less tv console based. More importantly, with the disc I could use my Samsung TV remote via HDMI to be able to return to PS3 menu and perhaps play some other media or shut down the pS3 when done and return to tv viewing. Now I have to get out my lame PS3 game controller, enable it and then use it to control the jump back to the main menu of the PS3 in order to perform other actions such as shutting off the PS3. I also suspect, based upon experience, that now it is not fixed by the disc that I will probably soon need to download updates every week or so... is this progress???

  170. I love instant steaming too bad Alaska has capped internet and you have to pay for every MB you go over. Netflix cost us a fortune our first month up here.

  171. Thanks... enjoying diskless Netflix on the Wii. Appreciate that Search has been added. I would really like to see Search expanded to include Actor and Director.

  172. So how about some new movies in your instant selection? Possibly something current that most people would actually be excited to watch?

  173. It would be nice if this worked at all. It didn't work with the disc and it doesn't work with the download. It gets half way through retrieving the movie, then says it can't connect to Netflix. With the disc, it would get half way through retrieving a movie and freeze.
I restarted the PS3 as suggested by Netflix, now it will not connect at all. Gee...what a improvement.
I can play the movies on my computer, no problem, so it's not my connection. The PS3 is hardwired to the internet connection. The whole thing is just aggravating and annoying!

  174. Works great on our Wii. Captions and subtitles at last! Thanks Netflix.

  175. I WANTED a PS3 disc because I'm not updating to the 3.21+ firmware so I don't lose linux or full USB support.

Doesn't matter anyway, cancelled membership due to lack of content.

  176. We have installed the new PS3 software and started using the new disc free feature.....

Watched Office and the first thing we noticed is that we lose audio (no sound) every now and then. Had to change the volume on the TV itself to get it back. Has anyone seen this problem before?

  177. I am curious about the economics of this. The service is free to subscribers. Does Nintendo gets a royalty or fee payment from Netflix for allowing movies to be streamed on Wii?

  178. ps3 cannot connect to netflix via the new software download. Keeps saying try again later.

  179. I just wanted to say that the new format on the systems way cool...also I just wanted to make alittle request.. (if our blogs can be answered) ...do you think its possible to make any dragon z in the instant que rather if its seasons or movies

  180. My "disc-free" Netflix is not working. Just keeps loading and loading....Anyone else have this problem?

    ReplyDelete
  181. My disc-free netflix software on my ps3 will not load. It just sits at that gimmick bar animation... like it's actually doing something? It's not relaying any info to me. This is terrible. I had a chance to enjoy the new software yesterday, and it was awesome. I suppose in the mean time I'll just hook my laptop up to my TV with an HDMI cable until it's fixed.

  182. I would love to be able to download movies to my iPod Touch to watch when I am not connected to the Internet. Is that something you are considering. ITunes let's you rent for 24 hours then the movie is removed.

  183. Complete FAILURE. If it worked as well as the disc app, it would be fine. However, it doesn't work. It doesn't connect, says the service is unavailable, sits there cycling through the pretty silver bars, etc. It does NOT work.

Very shoddy. Netflix should be ashamed of itself.

  184. This worked fine when I installed it a few days ago, but now my PS3 will not connect to the Netflix service, and it will no longer allow me to use the disc. I've been trying to connect for hours. What a failure. This better be fixed soon.

  185. Mine just sits there and continues to load the silver bars....and then gives me a cannot connect to netflix screen.

    ReplyDelete
  186. I would love to watch foreign films with the original audio track. Plus subtitles of course.

    ReplyDelete
  187. Getting same problem as people before me.

"We're unable to connect you to Netflix. Please try again later."

Probably just a temporary malfunction, so it should be fixed within 24 hours.

Though I do want to watch some Psych now!

  188. yeah this sucks. ive decided if it isnt fixed within 3 hours im going to find a stray kitten and burn it alive.

    ReplyDelete
  189. We are also experiencing the silver bars? is it updating or what? we dont mind waiting, and we are loving the new set up for the most part. We would just like to know what is going on and how long to expect the interface to be down. Please talk to us and let us know.

  190. The disc-free PS3 app worked great when I installed it on the 18th, and was flawlessly streaming until this morning, when I got the "cannot connect to netflix" error, try again, try again later, etc. I can't stream on the PC either, the player wouldn't even load, so I think it's bigger than just a PS3 app problem. The website also seems doggy slow. My account and billing info are all in order.

It's a shame, too, because my first couple of days on the free trial period went so well. I was almost ready to buy a wi-fi iPad, just to be able to stream Netflix via wi-fi while on the stationary bike.

  191. Ah, here we go:

We’re sorry, the Netflix website and the ability to instantly watch movies are both temporarily unavailable.

However, our shipping centers are continuing to send and receive DVDs so your order is in process as usual.

Our engineers are working hard to bring the site and ability to watch instantly back up as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience and, again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you need further assistance, please call us at 1-877-445-6064.

  192. I love how my roommate has a ps3 and gets to watch movies that aren't even supposed to be able to instant queue yet and I can't on my xbox 360 thanks a lot...

    ReplyDelete
  193. Netflix fuckin' sucks. I was a customer for 5 years and then cancelled b/c of outages and not shipping movies and the new 30 day idiot policy. I just rejoined yesterday and now I can't even access the website. What a bunch of f'ing morons.

    ReplyDelete
  194. Okay I'm pissed about this netflix not working bs. Okay so internet connection, check, installed netflix app on my ps3 (3 days ago), check, yesterday netflix streaming directly to my ps3 perfectly, check. Now, today it can't connect and please try again later. Well I've tried like 15 times and when the hell is later? I wanted to watch my show before work but alas hell no I can't. Also, can't get on the website from my compuer either. What have you done now? By the way the new PS3 app for Netflix was freakin awesome I was loving it.

    ReplyDelete
  195. I heard a rumor that Netflix has actually been taken over by a renegade group of Red Lectroids from Planet Ten, and that's why we can neither stream nor access their web site. If that's true, I'm not sure what any of us can do about it, because space aliens are awfully tricky and clever.

    ReplyDelete
  196. This is garbage. I am seriously over Netflix. What was the point in us doing the update if it so obviously was not ready? Now, I cannot even use the old disc. If it is not up and working soon(like tonight), I am through with this garbage. Nice job guys. Way to stay on top of things.

  197. parental control this, parental control that. Why don't you get off your fat asses and do some goddamn parenting for a change instead of expecting everyone else to do it for you? You want to know what my parental control was back in the day? A swift backhand, that's what.

  198. PS3 Netflix app is nothing like the Official Playstation blog video. This is very shoddy work to make your customers connect to a generic UI when we were supposed to get the one in the video.
