Netflix Launches in Canada

Jessie Becker here, delighted to tell you that today our neighbors to the north (or “neighbours”, to use the Canadian spelling) can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streaming from Netflix to TVs and computers for only CDN$7.99 a month. It’s the first time Netflix will be available outside of the U.S and I can tell you we’re all excited about it.

Netflix members in Canada can instantly watch movies and popular shows – such as “Superbad,” “A Beautiful Mind” and “Mad Men” – right on their TVs via Nintendo’s Wii, Sony’s PS3 game console, and coming later this fall, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, as well as models from Sharp, VIZIO, Haier and Best Buy’s Insignia brand. Plus, they can instantly watch via Apple’s iPhone or iPad and on PCs and Macs.

A hearty welcome to our Canadian friends, from sea to shining sea.

  1. I suscribed this morning and I started to watch some TV shows. I have to say, It's impressive. It's simple to use, there's a large choice of movies and TV shows and it works very well. I can't wait to use it on my XBox 360 to watch it on my TV. I'll watch on my computer for the moment! Good job! I have to say, you guys made my day!

  2. I'm really interested in getting this. But as of now, the selection is kind of old. That's the only thing stopping me from even trying it.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The selection seems very limited for Canada. only like 15 movies per category (Horror, Action, etc). Am I not seeing the entire catalog until I sign up, or is this what is actually available in Canada at the moment?

    ReplyDelete
  4. Guys, click on "See all" when you go in a category

  5. Guys, click on "See all" when you go in a category.

  6. I joined this morning and was very excited to check out the selection, until i seen the selection! What's with all these B movies? The selection is horrible, please add some movies that actually made it to theaters! I'll be canceling after my free month, it's not the tv or movie selection i expected.

  7. Yeah, the selection is pretty disappointing. The first thing I did was search for all the TV shows I watch regularly (Dexter, Glee, Weeds, How I Met Your Mother) and just saw all misses. The "Popular Picks" section is rather disappointing as well, as most of them are movies I've never even heard of. I'll keep on eye on Netflix in Canada, but I'm not signing up yet.

  8. Why on earth would Netflix rush to launch this if the selection appears to be 1/10th what Netflix US has?

The selection looks about the same as a B-grade Premium movie channel.

I know licensing titles in Canada is a pain, not sure why, iTunes in Canada has the same issue. We get 1/10 the selection that the US gets.

  9. I'm really interested in getting this. Are Canadians able to get Netflix on the new AppleTV?

    ReplyDelete
  10. What happened to these TV Shows?
    - Lost
    - The Office
    - Dexter
    - Fringe
    etc...

For the shows that you do have, you don't have any of the current seasons!
    Deadliest Catch Season 1.. that's from 1995!
American Chopper Season 1.. from 1993!!
Come on Netflix, do you realize that we have the same tv shows here in Canada that you have in the USA. Don't feed us shows that are over 5 years old!

    ReplyDelete
  11. It seems like a very small selection. I would like a service like this but I'm afraid I can't find anything I would want to watch.sess

    ReplyDelete
  12. Very disappointed with the selection compared to the US site. No, family guy, office Dexter etc. If it doesn't improve during the one month trial i will cancel.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I have to agree with the others. The selection is horrible on the Canadian site. There is like 200 titles total.

I had planned on joining today but looking at the selection its simply not worth the effort.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Although I want to love this, I will not continue my free trial if this is what we'll get. I don't expect 1:1 with American shows, but something better than this please.

The Netflix selection looks like what I can find on my TV for free right now, except for some of the TV Seasons (like Mad Men) which look interesting. No Lost though :(

Anyways, will keep an eye on this but will tell friends/family to hold off until we see more content.

Is there a listing of all movies/TV Shows for us Canadians?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Canada has a lot more regulation of content than the U.S. The Canadian selection my, in fact, never get to the level of that on the U.S. site.

All you have to do is look at Canadian cable and the lack of specialty channels (how many years did it take to get Fox News approved - a basic cable channel).

All of this for the sake of "Canadian Heritage" and over protection of the cable industry (big media conglomerates own all cable systems now). It's a recipe for less choice, a virtual industrial monopoly, and Canadians being stuck with what they are served in regards to television.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Very limited selection... we want more!

    ReplyDelete
  17. The selection is simply horrible. Netflix what is wrong? Is it the CRTC? Did they do this to you? This is doomed to fail. I tried about 30 movies I wanted to see (all over 1 year old) and all said "not available". No thanks. Unfortunately I feel like this isn't Netflix fault but our government's pro monopoly stance as they continue to stay in bed with Bell and Rogers. Also most Canadians have ridiculously low bandwidth caps. It's a huge uphill battle for Netflix in Canada and so far it looks like they haven't even started to climb it. I hope it improves VERY soon or it will be over in no time at all. :-(

    ReplyDelete
  18. Are any of these shows/movies in HD?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Great news. One question, will Netflix Canada offer movies in both french and english? There are a couple of millions french speaking clients out there that might like to watch movies in french.

At the moment french movies appear to be limited to a few Foreign movies from France... How about supporting dual audio track?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have to agree with many posters here. The selection available in Canada is very poor. Comparing the available streaming content in the US to what has just been launched for Canada is paltry. I hope more content and updates are added within the next 30 days.

Does anyone know anything about Windows Media Center support within Canada? US users have full netflix support in Windows Media Center and I would love to have the same.

    ReplyDelete
  21. This has been way overdue... Will be signing up asap

    ReplyDelete
  22. I was really excited on signing up until I saw the selection of movies. I mean, where are all the NEW movies that have been released? I have searched for movies like Avatar, POP: Sands of time and even some of the TV shows I searched for like (Quantum Leap and Star Trek: TNG all come up Not Available, but you might like these!! Bah. I waited a long time for this and there's no new content. Not a good way to start out. Give us some new content to make it worth while. If no new content comes, I think I will be canceling after the free trial. I even searched for Friday the 13th just for fun, also not available. What gives!!??

    ReplyDelete
  23. Thanks, I've been waiting for this a long time.

I'm curious about when some shows marked "Not available" will be added, specifically Top Gear, and House MD. The Selection for the first day is good. However, could you at least post a reason why it's not available next to the title? This way we can yell at whoever we need to to get this working, and not yell at you.

Keep up the good work, and I'll gladly shell out what you guys want for compensation. $8 and change a month for the convenience and this selection isn't that bad, considering what my family pays for Bell.

    ReplyDelete
  24. So 2 things:
    1) the selection has NOTHING to do with the CRTC or Cancom requirements - netflix would need a agreement separate from the US for streaming media to canadians, this is related to rights holders. In some cases you can count that Global, CTV have locked up the rights to many currently airing shows.

    2) Even in the US many movies are not release straight to netflix so ppl looking for avatar, anything from HBO, or movies released in the last 30-60 days will almost always be sol.

Dont get me wrong though - the selection sucks for canada regardless.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Very poor selection.......

    ReplyDelete
  26. i would even pay double to have a somewhat better selection of movies and newer tv shows. will probably cancel after the trial if the library doesn't get bigger by an order of magnitude.

    ReplyDelete
  27. just signed up - very unfortunate selection. I'll watch the 10 or so good movies I see, then cancel. will sign up perhaps when you guys get a decent selection.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I was JUST about to sign up when I saw that the selection was so lousy, judging by all the comments.

No thanks, I 'll stick to my Blu Ray rentals and I'lll jump on this bandwagon when Netflix gets some CONTENT.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yup a pretty pathetic collection! I have used Netflix instant streaming when it was launched in US and this is no way closer to what the US folks had at that time. I was very tempted to cancel my cable...but I think I'd hold on!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the selection would be this poor. Not even old programs like Night Court, Murphy Brown, and MASH are offered. I'm very disappointed and won't be signing up.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love all the CBC rerun content, Fail. Please come back to Canada when you think we watch more than Trailer Park Boys.

    ReplyDelete
  32. When will streaming be available in Puerto Rico?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've been pumped about this since the second it was announced, but like many here, I'm pretty disappointed with the selection. I searched for about 10 things off the top of my mind when I first signed up and EVERY ONE was unavailable.

That said, there is still a LOT here, and assuming the quality is good (I'll get my Wii disc in a couple of days to try it out), I'll definitely give it a chance, but man...

    ReplyDelete
  34. Works perfectly, will subscribe. Would like to see a much greater selection of TV content on there though, where's my Glee, Smallville, 90210, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Castle, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  35. will my xbox allow me access to sign up tonight? its been restricted - i assume today it will suddenly work? or will we need a firmware upgrade?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wow. I did a comparison to my Zip List. I picked ~20 titles I'm waiting to see. I managed to find one on that list that matched. I would say the majority of those movies were from the past 3 years, but a few were from the 70's and one was a Canadian movie.

The selection is terrible. We can only hope they get more content fast. I'll start my subscription when my random selection gets about 30%, not the current 5%.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I want to sign up, and it says that you accept PayPal, but there is no PayPal option on your account site. I use PayPal for pretty much everything, so am curious why it's not available...

    ReplyDelete
  38. There was a ton of shows i wanted to watch and thought netflix would be the perfect place but everything i searched for is unavailable. Netflix.ca is a failure. And its not just the series, the movie selection also sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  39. No Star Trek movies or TV Shows? Blech.

Please tell us if the selection will be expanded soon!

    ReplyDelete
  40. The collection is horrid. I'll use up the free trial and then cancel.

Netflix: Bring a massive collection, especially older stuff or you're not going to get a lot of subscribers

    ReplyDelete
  41. Very bad and thin selection. Also, not available on Xbox Live yet. Total miss for me. I would gladly take it if the content was comparable to what is available in the US netflix, even if you raise the price to 9,99$ or more.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I was really hoping that Canadians would enjoy the same amount of recent selections and up-to-date movies and tv series that Americans enjoy but alas...

I'm HUGELY disappointed that NetFlix Canada has such an inexcusably poor selection and that you have the nerve to charge us $8 a month for it.

My guess is that once again Canadians are suffering from the ridiculous and outdated copyright/content agreements that have protected Canadian broadcasters and distributors for FAR TOO LONG from the REAL "Free Market".

    Get real NetFlix!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Unfortunately, the selection is so poor it seems like an insult - I will not be signing up until we get a better choice - this including new releases.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree with most people here when I say the selection is pretty POOR compared to what US subscribers receive. Please work quickly to update your libraries with newer content.

Thank you though, for bringing this service to Canada!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Their definition of "PC" means Microsoft Windows based PC.
All throughout the sign-up process this is what Netflix stated. Then, when I tried to watch a television show... Oh, you need a Windows PC. Won't work with a Linux based PC. Will be cancelling my account I just signed up for.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Please improve the selection. The movies here have all aired on TV already and are very very old. Who wants to pay $8/mo to watch old movies?

    ReplyDelete
  47. I was pretty interested in Netflix in Canada. Excited even. Then I took a look at the TV selection and wow, this is just terrible. I'd have better luck taking out DVDs at the library. I know Canadian copywrite laws are tough but who honestly would find value in this?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Canadian cable and satellite companies must be pissing themselves today once they realize just how incredibly shitty NetFlix Canada offering really are.

It's pretty damn bad when $8/month is TOO MUCH to pay for such an unbelievably terrible service.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hi,
Before signing up can you tell me if this is technically feasible: I travel between Canada and other countries (in Africa mainly). Can I watch NetFlix while I travel? Lots of sites like Hulu are blocked internationally so this is important for me. I WOULD be a Canadian subscriber (home address and bank), but not always there.
    Please let me know!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Most titles shown on the current Netflix site (without subscribing) are available at a local library for free.

    No incentive to join there.

In today's market, newest and fastest are expected. Very disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Pro's - price, quality, ease of use.

    Con's - Selection is terrible.

I agree with the rest of the people here that If things don't get better in the next 30 days. I will also be out.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Honestly, it's not a bad start. Netflix had an even worse selection when it launched online streaming down in the US.

The real test will be adding to it. Licensing American television and film in Canada has been a notorious pain in the butt. If you don't believe, just try viewing Hulu from Canada without a proxy. If Netflix can secure the licences to add to it, they'll thrive and put a ton of pressure on Shaw and Rogers.

If they get some more recent and popular content, I'll probably drop my cable.

    ReplyDelete
  53. No service less then a day old is going to be perfect at launch.Even the us ones took time to be what it is today. Its not right or fair to compare it to the us one.I don't agree it will fail i think it will be a big hit.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I was super excited when I got the email about the launch this morning. Signed up for the free trial and then started browsing. WTF? I'll give it 'til the end of October but if this is the best we get for content I'll go back to just torrenting movies and TV.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The selection is only satisfactory, I guess I won't be able to get rid of streaming movies off iTunes or renting from Blockbuster (which is going bankrupt soon).

    ReplyDelete
  56. Seems like a great service and the price is reasonable, but I couldn't find a single thing that I would want to watch. Given the current selection, it's not even worth the few clicks it would take me to sign up for the free trial. If you can improve your lineup with some popular recent TV shows (Dexter, Spartacus, Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock, Glee, etc) and some decent movies I will likely sign up in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Selection simply sucks. none of the movies or tv shows I am interested in are available. Not worth the money IMO

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was very excited to see Netflix come to Canada but after browsing the selection I'm afraid I won't even bother with the trial offer.

I would love to watch HBO without needing to subscribe to digital cable, and would certainly sub to netflix if HBO shows were available.

Jessie, are there plans to expand selection soon, or is this it?

    ReplyDelete
  59. won't work on my wmc7? Is there a way to use the Windows plugin?

    ReplyDelete
  60. What's with all the "This title is not available"? It seems the selection is not quite as big as you are pitching. Can we get an explanation as to why they are not available and some numbers of % of the library that is off limits?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Can you guys get the wd hd tv live plus media player working asap? oh and of course xbox too...

    ReplyDelete
  62. Canada gets the shaft again. Words cannot express how disappointed I am with the selection. I applaud you for trying, as something like this has been long overdue in Canada, but it's just not worth anything without a full library.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love the format but selection is poor.It won't be before I'm canceling if it does not improve.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Excited about this but I can't have a Jet Li and Bruce Lee marathon with the CRAPPY selections. Considering that Netflix Canada just came out today, I will wait a little longer.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I've been using the Canadian iTunes store for my TV/Movie viewing for a couple of years now. I can get all the popular shows/movies there so I know there is a way to license the content. Sounds like Netflix needs more aggressive negotiators to make this happen!

For now, I'll stick to iTunes and watch what happens with Netflix content.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Horrible selection
There is a good chance I will be cancelling after my free month.

    ReplyDelete
  67. please netflix bring more anime dvds/blu-rays/streaming titles to your service.because right now, even in america it sucks!
    thanks

    ReplyDelete
  68. Not cool Netflix, not cool. Having just moved to Canada from the states, I was extremely disappointed that I wouldn't have access to all the streaming sites available in the US (Hulu, Pandora, and Netflix). When I heard Netflix was going to be available here, my disappointment turned to joy . . . now that its here, I'm even more disappointed then before. The selection is horrible. Seriously, no one will be hanging around long for this line up.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I've been waiting for months with baited breath, and dreaming of the day I can do away with the headache of having to pay significant sums of cash for season boxed sets.

All I can say is that I am very disappointed with the selection, and like many here, will be cancelling unless it improves drastically.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Very poor selection and in english only?
Offering titles in both official languages would make you look a bit better.

I think you will experiment a massive exodus after the free trials...

    ReplyDelete
  71. Disappointed in the limitations of the selection, and hope that changes soon. However, for just being launched, I'm more disappointed that there's no queue to pick through these options. If that doesn't change, I probably won't go beyond the free month.

    ReplyDelete
  72. bell and rogers win again

    ReplyDelete
  73. would love to sign up if there was more of a selection of films and tv-series.

    ReplyDelete
  74. What? No Family Guy, no South Park, not even The Simpsons? And from 10 titles I have searched for, none on them was available. At list cut the suggesting part, it just pisses me off!

    Canceling...

    ReplyDelete
  75. Glad to see you guys available in Canada now too! One of the things I would really like to see is up to date TV shows (same day or next day episodes). The selection on TV shows isn't that great right now either. It would be really nice to not have to pay for cable any more!

    ReplyDelete
  76. No comparison between the American and Canadian content for streaming.
The American site has way more titles and way more current titles.
The Canadian site is a waste of time.

    ReplyDelete
  77. WARNING! Was happy to try Netflix Canada, but they won't accept Prepaid Credit Cards. This is a no go for me since I ONLY use prepaid CC's for any online purchases - Non-prepaid is just too risky. What a shame :(

    ReplyDelete
  78. I won't waste the 30 day trial until netflix is available on the 360. Hopefully by then the selection improves... a lot. But seeing how abysmal the selection is on the Zune Video Marketplace I doubt netflix can do any better.

No wonder torrents is so popular in Canada, no one wants to sell us the good stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Does anyone know if Samsung Blu-ray players in Canada will get a firmware update soon to access Netflix? They already have it on Samsung players in the US, but I can't find any info about Canada :(

    ReplyDelete
  80. I will be patient in the hopes that they can successfully secure a wider scope of licensed material. At present, this is paltry to what is available for free from Rogersondemand.com, Crackle (through ROD), or, with the right equipment, Hulu.

In any event, I am down with a service that scares Rogers and Bell, as long as they step up and secure better rights.

However, what I need to see right away is a plugin to access through Windows Media Center. I have hacked the US version of the plugin, and the interface is beautiful. It lets me log in with my account, but does not let me access any of the content. I am hoping this can be fixed ASAP.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Wow, great service, but old and outdated content!

Quigley Down under is listed in your "New Arrivals" section. That movie is 20 years old *facepalm*

    ReplyDelete
  82. Extreme disappointment.

I'll fiddle around with Netflix Canada for a few weeks, but if the selection doesn't improve exponentially every day, then I'll be cancelling before the end of the free trial.

You might want to re-think European expansion with a selection this poor.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I would rather use this service than pirate movies and tv shows, but i cant even get House MD or the Office or The Matrix
    whats up?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Awful content, really not worth launching the service with only this selection.

    ReplyDelete
  85. As an American who lives in Canada and is familiar with the US version of NF Instant, I'm disappointed there is no Instant View Queue.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Great start, but not nearly enough content to entice me to sign up.

Get the rights to a larger library similar to the US and start the DVD mailing and I'll sign up for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  87. There is no queue in the Canadian version?! The queue is my favorite part of Netflix. Why no queue?

    ReplyDelete
  88. very disapointed with the selection. Was super excited about this...now just twisted.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Was excited... but worried about content... from other's comments I see the selection sucks. Canada's backward laws leaves me in the torrent camp still.. I want to pay for a premium service but THERE IS NO PREMIUM SERVICE FOR CANADIANS!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  90. When will streaming service be available in Puerto Rico? It's ridiculous that you haven't been able to get this to work yet.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I am VERY excited to see this service come to Canada. I cancelled my cable years go due to horrible selection, insane cost and an overload of commercials. Netflix solves all of these! The only issue is that I will burn through everything availible in 3 months tops, maybe even less (everything worth watching that is). I love older movies so I am ok with a lot of what is up there, but it is NOT enough. Where are all the TV shows and movies?

    ReplyDelete
  92. when "the Burbs" is in the popular picks section you know the choice is limited. With such old / b-list movies I might as well wait for them to show up on tv. Couldn't even find anything that I'd want to watch for FREE during the trial. Pathetic. Get a catalogue worth a look and I'll be the first to sign up.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I phoned the help line to ask a couple of questions. One of the questions was about the content, or lack thereof, and was assured by a very helpful agent that there would be more content added as time goes by. Here's hoping that she is correct!

    ReplyDelete
  94. WARNING! I attempted to sign up with my Prepaid Credit Card that I use for ALL online purchases/memberships etc... I've spent literally thousands online using this card without a single issue... until now. While I would LOVE to get Netflix, Prepaid Credit Cards are NOT accepted by Netflix. I will only ever use a Prepaid CC online... What a shame that MANY Prepaid-CC-Holding Canadians (who, incidentally, are the perfect demographic for Netflix!!) will be refused this service :(

    ReplyDelete
  95. NETFLIX so disapointed. I can get this kind of selection free from the public library.

Typical US Company given Canada the scraps!! Do you think we are stupid???

No one wants Netflix if its gonna just offer crap selections!!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Actors hired to help launch Netflix in Canada

"I was unaware that script was handed out to extras and that was not supposed to happen," said Steve Swasey, vice president of corporate communications for Netflix.
"Some people got carried away and it's embarrassing to Netflix."

  98. lame. cant stand the CRTC.

    ReplyDelete
  99. netflix in Canada, Hey guys how bout offering the same as the US?

O ya thats right Canada gets the gears, the pathetic scaled back version. Should have known...

Dont waste your time folks the library of content is old.

Of course anything I wanted was "unavailable" WOW no surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Gonna flop if thats all you can give us "Canadian" suckers!!

O well cant beat the government and cant beat the crtc or the cable companies.

    Hey CUBA you got netflix?

    ReplyDelete
  101. While I agree with most that the selection is inadequate; I'm also almost certain that it is not entirely Netflix's fault.

A nice blog entry explaining the mechanics of TV/Film rights holders in Canada would go a long way to calm a few people. It may also help us understand who to contact to add our voice to others and eventualy get results.

I'm also interested in knowing when support for Android mobile devices will be available.

In the mean time; I've got plenty of stuff I can now watch legally for a reasonable price. Especialy for me, living in Québec, I have a hard time getting some english only shows as no store carry then since they won't sell any if they are not translated in french.

Since I like to watch everything in its original language; your service is a welcome option for me.

Unfortunatly; when the well dries off; I will be out of here...Unless of course you fill up the well faster than I can empty it.

Thanks for taking the time to 'expand' to Canada and welcome to our nice country.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Big letdown once again, content not available? Screw the CRTC!!!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Will Canada ever get cool stuff?

Errrrrrr Sucks Filtered CRTC government regulated crap red tape!

Hey Netflix stop wasting your time just offer the service to us from the USA....

    ReplyDelete
  104. I phoned the help line to ask a couple of questions. One of the questions was about the content, or lack thereof, and was assured by a very helpful agent that there would be more content added as time goes by.

Time has gone by and still the bull continues!!!
Here is an idea make sure you got the content before getting our hopes up for nothing,,,

    Always CANADA gets C R A P !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. People its just started today its a good start. It takes time to have a great service it is not instant.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I signed up for the service and am able to watch on my computer perfectly fine, but when I try to view from the Netflix app on my iPhone, it says that I can not view netflix from this location, which seems odd.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I think I will be the first person in Netflix history to cancel a free trial service. The streaming service is very solid. Unfortunately the selection is a disgrace. Every time I try to watch something I get "unavailable”. Why is the Godfather which is almost 40 years old unavailable????? Have been comparing selection choices with a buddy on Netflix U.A.A. He is getting more than twice the selection list we are. To bad because it's seems like a great service..........

    ReplyDelete
  108. NETflix welcome to Canada.

    What did you bring us?
    Havent seen anything good yet?
Did you forget to bring the goods over the boarder?

    Still waitin??? Maybe in 3010??

  109. Netflix???

We have a service like yours called the National Film Board, no one wants that either

All that money all that power and you brought nothing :(

    Someone save us bored CANADIANS....

  110. Speedboarder
I would not be to sure about that.Pay $7 for one movie on ondemand or $7.99 for unlimited.I am sure you will see this will appeal to alot of people.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Not available on XBOX 360 are you kidding?

    Guess Rogers owns Microsoft too??

    ReplyDelete
  112. Hey Speedboarder

    You work for netflix?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Sad Man
The film board does not offer anything close to this good service.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I like the concept, and I've been hoping for it to come to Canada for a while now. But the selection is seriously lacking. Even movies that are over a year old aren't listed, or more popular more recent titles. I couldn't watch anything "Batman" not matter how old it is, or any of my daughter's favorite cartoons. Popular TV shows aren't available either, which is what we'd hope to use the service for.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Don't compare this to the us one now compare it to when netflix first launched.

    ReplyDelete
  116. 7 bucks also gets u 7 of these kinda movies at the dollar store
    :{

    ReplyDelete
  117. I'm excited that this service is launching in Canada. I'll definitely consider subscribing to it once I get the word that the content has improved. As others have stated, so far it appears to be pretty limited.

    ReplyDelete

Very few services have great line ups at launch. It takes time it took itunes 2 years to build up the canadian library.Yes people will still around this is a good service.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I signed up, excited to be able to watch a number of shows and movies, and the selection is bad. Not a good selection of anything, most of the movies that are available I've never even heard of. Everything that I looked up is not available (and it's from all different era's).

    Mork and Mindy
    Lois and Clark
    Xena
    Simpsons
    Avatar
    Dexter
    Etc etc....

I do hope more content is added ASAP (a much better selection). I really want to give Netflix a chance and avoid downloading torrents, but so far this isn't looking too promising.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Dave
Try about $5 per movie at a dollar store.

    jay

    ReplyDelete
  121. I was so excited that netflix came to Canada, but when I went to do a search, the first five movies I chose were "Not Available". Very disappointed. Guess we will have to wait for zip.ca to get on board with live streaming and see if they can come up with a decent selection.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Folks remember Netflix is new to Canada... But we are not new to gettn screwed by the CRTC.

Crap the CRTC and free Canadians to fair entertainment options!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete

    Jay

    ReplyDelete
  125. Well Rogers owns Zip.ca so they only offer service if their is competition. With what Netflix has to offer don't expect them to run at the oppertunity.

Hey Bandwidth limits might increase now they know that Netflix is no threat!!!

    Yeaaaaah

    ReplyDelete
  126. Sneaky
    Rogers does not own zip.

    ReplyDelete
  127. No, don't compare this to how Netflix was in the US when it first started. This is a time-tested, successful service in the US why is it too much to expect a marginally similar service in Canada? Don't give me the line about government and the cable industry etc, etc. If Netflix was practicing good business, they would have waited on launch until it was worth everyone's time and money. This is not a first round attempt for Netflix. I think everyone who has been waiting for the launch deserves to be disappointed. Bad showing, Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  128. You can't look at it beeing successful in the states so it should be the same in canada on day one.Netflix has to work out studio deals that takes time.No company based in the states or any country can just come in with out working out deals. The blame should not be at netflix but at the right holders.

    Jay

    ReplyDelete
  129. Thanks Netflix but I will try out the free month but most likely cancel after that....

This seems to be a even more limited version of the already limited USA service but its *still* better than anything else we have available up here (unfortunately).

    ReplyDelete
  130. Love it. Been waiting! As someone without cable, I'll def subscribe. Only one minor gripe (I'll be calling Cust Service to see if they have any thoughts), when I queue up a show, HD doesn't seem to be working (100 mbps Internet), so that seems a bit weird. Still, the a/v quality is great !

    ReplyDelete
  131. I subscribed this morning as soon as I woke up and saw my email. I have been SO excited about Netflix coming to canada finally. I have been waiting a really long time for this.

I signed up for my free trial, threw in my Prepaid CC # for online purchases - which DID work by the way for those saying it doesn't. Set up my PS3, set it up on my laptop and my iphone, and went searching.

What a joke. Every thing I searched for wasn't available. Except Heros. What a disappointment. I understand that it is day 1, but this is horrible. I have seen the American selection, and this is NOTHING in comparison. If there isn't an improvement, I will certainly be cancelling as well. I'm thinking Netflix should have secured some better programming before rolling out the big release. I can only imagine how many accounts Netflix is going to lose over this serious disappointment.

Is there a plan to get more programs? I read an interview this morning that CBC did. It had mentioned a few years. Who is going to wait a few years for this to be worth it? Its cheap yes, but the content isn't even worth the price.

Hope this gets better Netflix or it was a total waste of everyones time.

    ReplyDelete
  132. The selection is Crap! The third world children of the would even say so!!!

    ReplyDelete
  133. 12:41 PM
I doubt there will lose that many.I am happy as well as alot of people i know.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Very disappointed with the selection. I think this is not ready for any serious subscriber. The selection does not even worth my time to setup a trial account.

i wouldn't subscribe until the content grows 10x...

    ReplyDelete
  135. @ Jay

I didn't say the service should be the same in Canada on day 1. Nor should it be the same as it was in the US on day 1. I believe I said "marginally similar" to current US service. I stand by that.
I agree that it takes time to work out rights deals and whatnot, so then why rush to launch? It's inevitable that Canadian consumers feel disappointed. It still boils down to good business practice.
My only hope is that we see a vast improvement in content very soon.

    ReplyDelete

  137. Big swing and a miss by the product management crew at Netflix! I was about to sign-up but then saw the selection and that it won't work with my Windows Media Center (where was the working together with Microsoft?!). I can hear the conversations to push it out ASAP, but why bother when it hurts the brand and there is nothing there anyone wants to watch!? Disappointing.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I agree with the other posters, selection is quite limited. The other big feature missing is the Instant Watch Queue. US folks can search and add movies to their Instant Queue which they can then sit down to watch on their favorite device. We are stuck searching and watching. I can't see me searching for random movies on the Xbox/PS3 etc. I'd like to be able to search for the gems during the week, add em to a queue and then watch em on the weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  139. 12:57 PM
Unless you sign up you can't see the full line up.There is alot more then what shows up on the front page.

    jay

    ReplyDelete
  140. I'm disappointed that the selection is not as great as the US. One of the major appealing points of Netflix is the depth of the selection available. I'll give it a shot for a month but if I feel like I've exhausted everything I wanted to watch I'll cancel the account.

The bottom-line is we, the Canadian people, want more content.

    cheers,
    G

    ReplyDelete
  141. Just subscribed few minutes ago, I am impressed about the ease to use and available title. I have a question that may have consequence on the future of my subscription: Are you gonna have movies in my own language i.e. French, I do not mean from France but with the french track?
    Thank you for answering.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Its difficult to believe that many of the posters here are not employed by Zip or another competitor, or perhaps they are shorting Netflix stock which is up by 30% today on the announcement?

While the selection is limited, it is normal for any Canadian launch. For example, compare it with the launch of the Canadian version of iTunes, or Zip. Netflix is massive, just crushed Blockbuster..and eventually there will be a very large catalog which will put the remaining DVD Rental stores out of business.

Today there is still a massive amount of content at a fraction of the price of the alternatives. For example, commercial free versions of the first 3 seasons of Madmen, + Dexter, Sex and the City, etc. why would you spend more than $50+ to buy this on iTunes or in a store ? Many of the movie rentals are the same which are available from Rogers or from a video store for $4-$5 dollars (i.e. An Education, Fargo)

The excellent thing about Netflix is that it increases the choices and offers high-quality delivery options. Pleased to have more choices.

  143. Really embarrassing launch...now I just have to remember to cancel the membership before the free trial is up...I wouldn't pay for this.

    ReplyDelete

Can you name one canadian service at launch that had a massive library.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Well, it works and the quality of the streaming is good. Just wish there was more selection to be had. There are a few good films, but as mentioned by other commenters, there's a lot of B movies and such. The Sci-Fi/Fantasy selection is abysmal right now. And yes, I did click "see all"... The Canadian store just does not have access to all the same titles available in the U.S.

Hopefully this will be remedied soon otherwise I can't see maintaining my subscription much beyond the trial month.

    ReplyDelete
  147. So much promise, but so much FAIL. The selection feels like an insult to Canadians. I'm sitting here going "are they serious"?

So far every single movie and TV show I've searched for is "Not available". Everything that is available is ancient. Can't even watch Terminator 3, Mission Impossible, or Gone in 60 Seconds! No BSG. Noo current/recent seasons of anything interesting.

Apparently movies from 1989 count as new releases. Come on guys, seriously?

I'll be cancelling my membership as soon as the free trial is up. Or sooner...haven't found anything to watch yet. :(

Super disappointed. Please go back to the drawing board boys & girls.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Mr Shaw
I am not sure about your service. But with rogers ondemand is not cheap so people will say $7 for one movie or $7.99 for unlimited movies and tv series.

    ReplyDelete
  149. People its the first day give it time.By the way it seems some of you are expecting way way to much.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I get to watch Mad Men free for 30 days, catch up on the series, and then cancel my subscription! This is a fantastic deal! And I can watch Outta Sight with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez! Stop complaining. However, if they don't improve their selection, around October 21st Netflix is going to start complaining about cancellations in Canada.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Absolutely terrible. The selection for both movies and TV is tiny, and mostly full of average at best shows/movies. Netflix, you have Canada all wrong. I'd gladly pay $20 per month, or more, for a streaming service with new releases and a large back catalogue. Your goal should have been to replace cable. Instead you are useless, redundant at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  152. I have a US account that isn't working on Canada... what gives?

    ReplyDelete
  153. Who cares that it's the first day? If they already have the content online for the US, why isn't it online for Canada? Any why wasn't it online for Canada when it first started in the US?

We use the same internet...it works the same in Canada as it does in the US. ;) You don't need a seperate website...you don't need to add movies again!

Why launch a service with so little interesting or recent content?

And the film industry wonders why people download movies and shows on bit torrent.

Please Netflix, sell us what we want, we'll pay! :)

    ReplyDelete
  154. I'd like to see Netflix pressure device manufacturers into supporting us here in Canada now (like my LG BD-390C that only works in the USA).

LG - I'm looking at you!

    ReplyDelete
  155. Why are so many titles Not Available?

Very disappointing. If the selection doesn't improve drastically to include those titles, I won't be continuing on beyond the free month trial. I currently use Zip.ca and although it isn't instant, at least it has a better selection than my local movie rental location.

    Netflix: add more movies!!

    ReplyDelete
  156. 1:41 PM
Again this service will be appeal to alot.I think you would find less people willing to spend $20 on just new movies.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Yay now Canadians can spend enless hours in front of the tv too :P

    ReplyDelete
  158. Welcome to Canada!

I like your site & service, but I wish you had better content. It seems like mostly B movies, and pretty dated stuff.

Hope you're releasing new movies and shows soon!

    ReplyDelete
  159. Great.

When will you be available in Israel?

    ReplyDelete
  160. Requires Silverlight? What about Linux users?

    ReplyDelete
  161. 1:47 PM
Its not the same movies and tv series rights are not held by the same company. In the states there are rights holders and in canada there are rights holders.Exzample ctv own the rights in canada to law and order.A company based in the states that has got the us rights thats all good they have they ok to offer that program in the states. But they aslo have to agree with the rights holder in canada you can not offer it with out the ok.As isaid this is not netflixes fault this is the right holders that people should be up set with.

    ReplyDelete
  162. Hmm well I signed up.. I have to say that the impression based on the front page is VERY different from that on the actual member site.

The selection is better than i expected actually..

    Some example shows:
    BSG - original series
    Jeremiah
    Justified (S1 - newish)
    Hotel Babylon
    Dog (bounty hunter)
    Dr Who (older stuff)
    Highlander
    Fawlty Towers
    Hunter
    L word
    MI-5 (aka spooks)
    Monk
    MST3k
    My Boys
    Robin Hood (uk - newish)

I mean the US site is undoubtidly better populated with content. Many shows are simply MIA in canada (even canadian shows that are available to US site - see sg1)

But looking at the members page its not as bad as i initially thought. Just thought I would put this out there..

    ReplyDelete
  163. Won't sign up until you start shipping DVDs out too.

I just need 1 DVD at a time + Unlimited Streaming, like in the US for $8.99 USD.

Zip.ca offers 1 DVD at a time for $10.95 CAD (no streaming).

I am not going to spend $10.95 CAD + $7.99 CAD so I can receive same service offered in US for $8.99 USD.

I don't mind waiting for Discs shipped from US.

Make me an offer I can't refuse. :)

    ReplyDelete
  164. I highly doubt I'll pay for this service as they don't offer the same tv programs as the US. Pretty lame.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I was really looking forward to this service, but I am very very disappointed at the poor selection available. I'd be willing to pay more than $8 a month for more up to date and popular shows, but I likely won't be sticking around after the free trial if the selection doesn't improve.

    ReplyDelete
  166. 7 million people speak French in Canada. Are you providing subtitled or dubbed movies?

    ReplyDelete
  167. I can't download the ps3 app for some reason - I try and just get something that looks like a yield sign over it. Has anyone else had this problem?

    ReplyDelete
  168. I've been SUPER PUMPED for this and it was the best news all week... but like everybody else, I'm highly disappointed in the selection.

I can only hope it improves over the 30-day trial. I am signing up to show support for further development.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Man I really hope the selection expands soon -- depressing. I wonder if there is any way to hack into the US version now that we have access to Netflix?

    ReplyDelete
  170. This is awesome! ...except for the fact only 5% of the movies I actually want to watch are available. Kinda defeats the purpose of advertising a "huge selection" when you're missing the "huge" part.

It feels a lot like those free and legal movie sites, where there's only one show you actually want to see and the rest are junk. Except this time you get to pay!

Please explain what's up with this.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Nice to see it here in Canada; hope titles increase.

Devices supported, WDTV Live Plus, works in the US, not in Canada.

What are the plans for this device?

    ReplyDelete
  172. There needs to be more selection. The USA has way more. Why can't we have the same selection.
    Thanks Mike

    ReplyDelete
  173. There needs to be more selection. I did a quick search and could not find most of the movies I wanted to watch. Add the same content as USA and were good to go. Otherwise it sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  174. What a shitty selection. I was really hoping that Netflix would step up the game and bring the goods...

If they don't pick up their game in my free trial, I will be returning to Zip (Another DVD Rental service with a shitty selection... but at least they offer SOME new releases)

    ReplyDelete
  175. Support for media players, example, WDTV Live Plus, is not supported in Canada.

What are the future plans for support of this device?

    ReplyDelete
  176. Movie selection is TERRIBLE! I thought maybe because I was searching for newer movies from this year...but then I tried movies from 1-3 years ago with same results. If it was in the theatres we don't seem to have access to it. Only B movies and stuff that was released directly to DVD. What gives?! Major dissappointment.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Hi,

I waited for a couple of years for
    Netflix to come to Canada,
    and now...what a disappointment!

    The overall quantity and quality
of the offering is *really* low,
    especially compared to the US.

I realize that $7.99 is not much,
but for just one extra dollar
US customers have a much larger
streaming offering PLUS they can also
get DVDs by mail for those movies
    that are not streamed.

So the total movie content offering in the US
(by streaming + DVDs by mail)
is much much larger than in Canada.

I will wait to see what the
    canadian competitors (e.g., zip.ca)
    will be able to offer...

P.S. I would gladly pay double,
    eg 16$ per month,
for a subscription with a content
offering similar to the US one.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Brutal selection! Not worth the 7.99 that they will be charging after the 1 month free trial. If this service doesn't pick up their selection PDQ it will be done like dinner before getting out of the gate!

    ReplyDelete
  179. I have to say the delivery is amazing, the content availability is a joke. I can't believe Netflix brass think this is worth 7.99/mo.

Too bad, I was really looking forward to this service.

    ReplyDelete
  180. To Chris ,,
The update for Samsung Bluray Dvd Players came up as soon as i turned on the player tonight ,, if you don't get it go to samsung.ca and get it.

    ReplyDelete
  181. 3:32 PM
No i doubt it will be done like dinner.$7.99 is dirt cheap tons of people rent older movies from viedo stores for much more. For $7.99 your not going to get every new movie every new series.

    ReplyDelete
  182. 3:13 PM
There are tons of movies that were in thearters.

    ReplyDelete
  183. For a ondemand or pay per view your going to pay around $7.Yet some of you think there should be unlimited stream of brand new movies is this correct.

    ReplyDelete
  184. lmao, no thanks to the shitty selection. i'll just stick to my 0-day HDTV torrents thanks! lol

    ReplyDelete
  185. "Terminator: Salvation' is not available but you might enjoy these titles...

In the Name of the King...

    American Psycho..."

lmao! cause those old titles are fuckin related to the terminator franchise! hahhahahah so gay!

    ReplyDelete
  186. The Netflix FAQ says "you can also watch instantly via some Internet connected Blu-ray players as well as some Internet connected HDTVs."

Which HDTVs?? How about the Sony Bravia line of internet-connected TVs?? It does Netflix in the US; what about Canada, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  187. signed up this morning, but it just doesn't work on my ps3 at all.... keep getting an error message telling me "We're unable to connect you to Netflix. Please try again or visit www.netflix.com/tvhelp for guidance."

Of course, when you go to netflix for "guidance" you don't get any.

    ReplyDelete
  188. We need more selection or its rediculus.

    ReplyDelete
  189. I just signed up today because a women in our office (who watches movies on her PS3) sent us the link. I think about 4 of us signed up right away before we dove in. I dove in and i have to say the website is great, i love being able to resume movies...and all those little features that make movie We need new movies netflix.

ALSO to all those people who are talking about badnwidth caps... there are ALOT of people out there with DSL(no cAP). caps are found on all cable subscriptions but if people would just get a service that desn't have a cap, then that would solve that problem.

We need more movies netflix. again great job on bringing to canada. we love it

    ReplyDelete
  190. more selection please. will not sign-up with such a limited selection.

    ReplyDelete
  191. Netflix, all Canadians were REALLY looking forward to using your service. The selection however seems to be seriously lacking. You can't compete with my current TV service for movies and TV shows. If the CRTC is chopping you off at the knees you need to speak up. Internet ISPs, cell phone companies, satellite radio and now streaming media seem to all be negatively affected by their ridiculous policies. We are a first world country with third world competition and content. If I'm wrong and you are responsible for this selection, well then, I'm just very surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  192. I just signed up, but doubt I will actually pay for it. The titles are too dated. Please upgrade!!

    ReplyDelete
  193. Further to my September 22, 2010 4:42 PM posting, I'd like to add the following. I expected to be wow'ed by the content so much that I would drop my Movie Channel subscription with Bell TV, purchase a second Xbox for my home and go with Netflix for as much of my content as I could. Your monthly cost coupled with the incredibly inexpensive Xbox made you my number one choice for content. Without good content, I just can't justify another service in the home.

    ReplyDelete
  194. I have to say, after a co-worker told me this was available, I was all ready to sign up. $7.99/month? Awesome! I assumed some titles would be unavailable because of licensing issues, of course. Then I decided to check...I had to search for 26 titles (mostly movies, 3+ years old, all sorts of genres) before finding one that didn't come back as "Not available".

I won't be signing up...yet, anyway. I like the idea, but if literally 95% of what I want to watch isn't available, I can't see the point. I'll check back in a couple months (if I remember) and see how things look...

    ReplyDelete
  195. Further again to my comment, I'll echo some other sentiments. I'd be willing to pay $30/month for unlimited streaming TV and movies... with a good selection.

    ReplyDelete
  196. Their selection is a joke. Who would pay $7.95 a month for this??? I can do better with basic cable. Good luck with this Netflix!

    ReplyDelete
  197. 5:16 PM
The avg basic cable in canada cost $30 it includes no movie channels. Why would anyone pay for this well alot of these movies are $3.00 plus per ondemand or on pay per view.

    ReplyDelete
  198. Thank you, Netflix, for giving us an affordable choice compared to the garbage we usually have to deal with (ROGERS). It took a while, but many, many Canadians are thankful.

    ReplyDelete
  199. come on Netflix. Wake up and get some selection. This sucks. I want to give you $ but not when you make us wait so long and we get nothing good.
