Now streaming in HD on PC and Mac

This is Brent Ayrey, Director of Product Management at Netflix. I wanted to let you know that we now have a number of movies and TV episodes available to watch instantly in HD on your PC or Mac. HD streaming requires Silverlight 3, and you must have both sufficient bandwidth and a sufficiently large screen size to get an HD stream. When watching a title that has HD stream available you’ll see an icon in the player controls at the bottom of the screen - if the title is streaming in HD that icon will light up.

You can browse the HD titles here: http://www.netflix.com/WiHD

Enjoy watching instantly in HD on your PC or Mac!

  1. Hey, we need a way to disable HD streaming for computers that can't handle it. This has killed my netbook which was able to stream SD just fine.

  2. This feature has stabilized a bit over the weekend, but there are still issues. For example Hubble's Amazing Rescue: Nova is listed as having HD streaming but does not while on the same computer right before and after it, Lost Season 1 Episode 1 does. Any comments on this issue?

  5. @maxdamage,

Try Control-Alt-RightShift-S, although it will only work in window mode, with the setting staying when you go large.

  10. Right. I don't want to be a freetard or anything, but it really is shameful that Netflix still isn't streaming to Linux. C'mon, I was even able to watch the olympics on NBC with moonlight. Please get on the bus, kids.

  11. 1. You still haven't restored the friends features.

    2. Your site used to list the TV series together. Which was convenient if one wanted to see it sequentially, in the order it was released. Now the series "Midsomer Murders" doesn't have this list anymore, so that became impossible. And don't tell me any lies like "only 2% of people renting 'Midsomer Murders' were doing this sequentially"!

  12. Just tried an episode of Legend of the Seeker season 2 which comes up under the HD genre search for Mac/PC, didn't stream in HD...

Also, while it's nice that titles finally tell us directly on the website if HD streaming is available, it doesn't differentiate which ones are only HD to TV sets and which ones also are HD for PC, which is somewhat annoying if I'm looking for HD content to watch on my Mac.

  13. I tried watching some titles in HD such as episodes of Lost, but it refuses to play any of them in HD for me on my mac. I checked my internet speed and I am currently downloading at 22 mbps which should be plenty. Does anyone have any suggestions?

@zhenyach How about staying on topic?

  16. Wow, isn't that nice. They got a link all lined up to let you browse the hi-def titles but they still can't bothered to provide one for their cc/subtitled movies.
Makes me think last month's little post was just a nugget thrown to the deaf community to shut us up for awhile. Thanks again netflix.

  18. This is not HD related and in no way am I trying to hi-jack your blog, but the Netflix customer support rep asked me to post this question here. Is it true that you are receiving sub-standard copies of movies from the movie houses such as "'Terminaor: Salvation' and 'Sherlock Holmes'"? I have noticed that these discs have the word "Rental" imprinted on them with what appears to be limited features. My copy of "Sherlock Holmes" did not have any BD-Live options nor did it have even Chapter Select from the menu. I am wondering if Netflix is aware of this, and if so, are they trying to do anything to restore content back to Bluray discs that one would normally have access to if they bought from Amazon or Wal-Mart. Looking forward to your comments.

  19. yeah it is really not cool that we can't turn off the HD function.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hey Netflix, why is it completely impossible to actually contact you? I want to ask if there's a way to prevent discs that can be watched instantly from being mailed, because frankly that's just stupid, and as far as I can tell there is NO WAY to send you any kind of correspondence. It's not covered in your freaking FAQs, which is all your "Contact Us" page redirects to over and over again. So now I've been reduced to leaving an off-topic comment on your blog. What's up with that?

  27. Miserable. I've tried watching 4 different TV episodes, all with HD. Choppy image quality... if it were a DVD I would describe it as "skipping". My connection is running at 54 mbps. I have to keep hitting the refresh button to watch 15 minutes and do it all over again. There needs to be a way to disable the feature.

  30. Hi Brent, I recently came back to Netflix after many years. I was one of your original members. I am an American of Indian origin and was hoping to see a lot of old Indian movies that I grew up with, in your watch instantly libriary but there are hardly any. There are many others who like me feel that you have too few Bollywood movies. Is there any way you can increase that list. I will be glad to suggest a lot of titles of excellent movies which will certainly increase your membership and make Netflix even more sought after.

  31. @Christian: You really have a 56mbps downlink? That is a very unusual speed. If so, your bottleneck must be your computer.

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Christian

Unfortunately, your 54Mbps is the connection between your wireless laptop and your router. This would not be your internet connection speed, just your internal speed through your network. For best performance in regard to streaming, you should try a computer that is connected via a cable and see if your performance improves.

  33. Thanks for this, one request regarding streaming:

Please allow Watch Instantly on Google Chrome! I hate switching to Safari for no good reason.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This might not be the forum for this but WHY..WHY..WHY.. cant netflix stream new release movies? (i.e stream book of eli when it is released) That would eliminate your shipping costs and our wait time, as well as reduce the amount of dvd's you had to have on hand for customers. It seems like there would be only up-side for you guys and us customers. So why is it not done that way. Most of the movies that are available for stream are fairly old.

  35. I wish I could disable HD on one of my computers. Silverlight is just way too slow and the video ends up being very choppy and almost impossible to watch.

    ReplyDelete

What do you think they are trying to do here?? Ask the studios, not Netflix, they are slowing down this type of progress.

  41. Thanks for keeping up the great development work! Now that Netflix is streaming HD to computers, TV's, BD-players, XBox, Wii, PS3, and other hardware commonly located in the home theater, I hope 5.1 audio streams will be coming soon.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow, this is GREAT! Another feather in the cap of my media center! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

  43. I agree with maxdamage. the 'hd' logo seems like a button that would let you turn HD on and off but it does nothing when you click on it.

My primary computer can no longer stream netflix if that content is available in HD (it drops frames).

    ReplyDelete
  44. HD streaming is also unusable on my Netbook. The automatic streaming control, occasionally turns off the HD streaming, but too quickly turns it on again. Unless the stream management algorithm improves, we need a way to manually turn off HD streaming.

My HP Netbook has a Broadcom CrystalHD Video Decoder, which is suppose to solve the HD streaming problem, but the Netflix/Silverlight streamer doesn't use it. Is there someway that the CrystalHD decoder can be utilized?

    ReplyDelete
  45. @pdejong +1

Just give us a button or checkbox that lets us completely disable the HD. When the button is "on" the player can still use the auto-determined connection speed to decide whether to enable HD or not. But for some computers, we really just need a way to tell the player that even if our bandwidth jumps up for a minute, we don't want it kicking on the HD.

That said, the HD quality is quite excellent when it works. Kudos for that.

Thanks for your time and effort.

  49. Dear Netflix,

I just watched an unexpectedly synergistic double feature of Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" and Gary Hustwit's "Objectified", and it got me thinking:

I am concerned (feeling guilty), and see it as a design opportunity, to suggest that you could reduce waste (the little strip of paper that you peel off to reseal the envelope) when mailing back your recent discs, by offering people an option to pay more to stream new releases (A titles), day and date with DVD and Blu-ray street dates.

I work in the film business so I know there are holdbacks associated with distribution rights issues as well as competition with Cable VOD...and I know we are in a time of technological transition (still) to a paperless (material less) information marketplace...but never the less I feel like this would be a good and attainable goal that seems well within the capabilities of such an innovative leader such as Netflix.

I am looking forward to the future.

    Thanks,
    Oliver

  54. Love the fact we are now getting HD, frustrated that instant titles are not permanent, nor do we see expiration dates. I went to watch a film that I had started the other month with my son, and guess what NO LONGER AVAILABLE STREAMING. Why can I get better selection from Amazon, and inconsistent from Netflix. I love Netflix, but frustrated that once a title is available streaming, it might not be available in the future. If you aren't leaving them up at least put a Good until date or something in the description.

  55. I'm getting HD on movies that say it has HD available. But I'm not getting HD on Television shows that say they are in HD. I'm on a wi-fi network, but because I'm getting full-length movies in HD but not TV shows in HD, what gives?

  57. echo, echo, please make a button to remove HD, etc.

i seem to have had success with the following: click on the movie as it is playing in the browser. select ctrl/alt/shift/m on the keyboard; choose stream manager, click the 'manual' checkbox then select 500 as the buffer (mine was set as 1500). the HD has not kicked on yet, and we're 20 minutes into our "the man who wasn't there." my speculation is that netflix doesn't think my connection has the horsepower to buffer HD, so it doesn't bother trying. one of these days i'll upgrade my video card, but i'd still like to watch movies in the meantime ...

  74. Dittos on the Netbook-class of computers having an issue with the HD stream selector. Indeed, if you use the manual selection to a rate at or below 1500, the Netbook plays OK. Try the 2800 or 3500 stream, and only 1 out of 30 frames play (29 are dropped).

GPU acceleration is enabled according to the player A/V Stats and the CPU is 50% busy. This Netbook (an Asus Eee 1006) can render 1080p H.264 Blu-Ray movies with 0 frame drops at 1920x1080. I am on a 10Mbps download fiber-optic Internet service. Right next to the Eee is a full PC that plays the HD streams without issue.

Regardless of resolution, the HD stream drops more frames than it plays.

Somehow, even if it needs to be in the Account Profile, we need to be able to disable the HD streams. Preferably, we could define this under the Devices in our accounts.

  86. I don't know if any "big" people in Netflix read these comments, but what's the deal with the 28 day postpone release of DVD's?!

Kind of blows the point right? I mean, everyone looks forward to the release date of a movie, now we have to wait 28 days?

On the other hand, do the big movie boxes really think most Netflix and Redbox users will go buy the DVD for $20 plus versus having to wait 28 days. I personally will wait, but I feel cheated by you guys. I feel like the edge is gone. Will I stay with Netflix, of course, but that doesn't change how I feel. It kind of makes it worse b/c there's nothing I can do about it.

  92. My internet connection is fast enough for your system to switch to HD streaming where available, but my graphics card can't handle it. There really needs to be an option to select SD voluntarily, because now everything that's available in HD is essentially unavailable for me.

    ReplyDelete
  93. You're HD is shit. The picture is great, but it messes up the sound ENTIRELY. This needs to be fixed, or you should be able to turn it off. I would rather have a decent picture quality that is in sync with the sound, vs. picture perfect video quality and a 1 second sound delay. Trying to watch movies in HD is pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hd needs to be an optional choice on the player! The control-alt-shift-s suggestion does NOT work... 100. A Netflix Customer (I pay you)May 27, 2010 at 4:33 PM

As EVERYONE else has said, just make a manual HD switch. If I can't watch video, your service is useless, and automatically turning HD on makes it so that I cannot watch video. Just because I have a fast internet connection, it doesn't mean I have an HD video card or monitor.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Wow, lots of bad experiences here. Score me in the satisfied category, however. It looks awesome coming through my homebuilt HTPC and Samsung HDTV.

It would be nice, however, be able to set the buffer speed and have it "stick." Currently, I have to reset it (higher, not lower as most of the other posters are saying) with each title that I watch.

I'm still having trouble streaming movies as it is, add HD?

Quality of the picture is poor and the application won't allow you to load the movie and play it later. (I have DSL).

There is no option for subtitles either so if you are hearing impaired, you are SOL.

Or is it that I don't know how to use the features well enough?

    ReplyDelete
  107. I haven't used Netflix instant viewing since they insisted we all switch to that piece of shit Silverlight. Maybe the problem was I was using XP.

So now I've just tried it again.

Windows 7 fully updated, 3.2GB dual core Intel, 4GB 800mhz ram, 512mb Nvidia video, latest Silverlight.

Boy, i just have to say, that HD really makes a difference. Not only is video still way beyond the abilities of Silverlight, due to the fact that it still doesn't support v-sync, but now with HD you can't turn off, the video tearing is clearer than ever, and the video looks like it's running at about 7/10's normal speed.

Pat yourself on the back MicroFlix, or NetSoft, or what ever you're calling yourself these days, you've done what I didn't think possible. You've moved to a video player that doesn't support video... and made it even less able to support video.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Please add support for Linux.

I was all set to watch a Netflix steaming video on the road today only to find out that Mac and Win are the only supported platforms.

At the very least you could provide unsupported Linux service, YMMV instead of hard coding it to fail.

  121. Why can't you submit free-from questions or feedback to Netflix? Nowhere on the site allows you to do that, and it's downright frustrating. I'm a paying customer. You're a paying customer. We should be heard!

Like everyone else, I am forced to submit a post here in this thread, even if it's out of place. I apologize in advance to those reading for the mini soap box I'm about to step on.

So my beef with watching instantly is the audio. Some movies (such as Bottle Shock) are just not viewable on the computer. The audio on a computer only goes so high, and I've encountered many movies where the audio was so low, despite the level being maxed out on my computer, that it made the movie unwatchable. The video was ok, but the audio was horrible. I had to rent Bottle Shock via snail mail because I couldn't hear a word they were saying throughout the whole movie on my computer. And even watching on my TV via my Wii console is still (somewhat of) an issue -- I find myself turning my volume up to like 60, where my normal volume range is 10 to 12.

To make it worse, I get those annoying surveys after watching a movie, which I try to submit with my feedback when there's truly an issue. The reason I call them "annoying surveys" is because the questions are closed-ended and don't allow for other answers outside of the pre-established ones from Netflix. For sound, you have the follwing options to select from: (1) video & audio out of sync; (2) parts of audio missing or choppy; and (3) parts of subtitles missing for foreign films. Where is the option for sound not being loud enough? For that matter, where is the "other" option???? So according to Netflix, if my issue isn't 1, 2 or 3, I don't have an issue? Or, an issue important enough for Netflix to be made aware of?

So I've been selecting the #2 option, even though that's not the real issue. All of the sound is there.....it's just not loud enough!

Seems to me that Netflix wants to make it SEEM like they want our feedback by sending surveys, but they don't REALLY want it, by not allowing other options or some kind of free-form text field.

How can you improve your website (or service) if you're not gathering the right feedback, and more specifically, from the people actually using the website or service?

I thought it might've been my own equipment, but I have the latest & greatest MacBook Pro and a brand new Sony HD flatscreen, so I think it's pretty clear there's a quality issue going on with some of the DVDs. But, I guess Netflix knows that and that's why they cut off free-form feedback, because they know they'd have to spend mega $$$ to increase their customer support to answer all the emails they'd receive about said quality. Or lack of.

I guess I have to live with it, unless I jump the virtual ship and go on over to Blockbuster. Hmmm. Something to consider.

Ok, stepping off box now. Thanks for listening!

  130. I apologize in advance but I actually have another comment to make. And before I even make this comment and the reason I have to put it here where it doesn't even belong is, why the heck does Netflix not have an email contact address on the Netflix home page or on the blog?? All I want to do is be able to send emails when tv shows aren't being updated (for example, Caprica season 1 (not the tv movie) or SKins volume 4 or Being Erica?

I personally purchased my subscription because I was tired of all the annoyance with television, changing formats, and causing disturbances each evening with sloppy reception-a different solution every night. Now, I find that Netflix seems to want to "improve" service and software about every week, causing turmoil throughout the system. This is annoying, and if you don't stop, I will cancel my subscription. If it ain't broke, STOP FIXING IT!!!!

  138. Please, I'm begging you, change the streamed versions of movies like Oldboy and The Cave of the Yellow Dog to the subtitled versions, not the dubbed versions. In fact, please change every streaming movie from its dubbed version to it's subtitled version. Dubbing is awful. It's truly a movie wrecker. Help us enjoy the streaming selections by allowing us to see them how they were made, with full audio that is not horribly dubbed over. Thank you.

  140. I'm disappointed that you have to kill the Friends feature so you can "focus" on the streaming business. I see where you are going--feeding the sheep instant streaming with the most "popular" titles. And you will later on need to apologize again for not having enough resources to stream all the titles, so you'll only stick with the popular titles.

What I do is start and stop the movie several times with the pause and then I move the movie forward and backward and then i move it forward again and it says not playing HD. When i move the movie forward and back and pause it I let it play for one second. The whole process takes about 2-4 minutes and when i finally move the movie back to the start and play it doesnt play in HD, it just says not playing HD. If you start the movie and it buffers right away you have to keep doing this process until the silverlight realizes it cant play HD. This is a pain in the ass and they need to have the option to play hd.

  166. you can disable hd by pressing ctrl-alt-left shift-s- at the same time when the movie starts. maunally overide the streaming to 1000 or less I have better luck with 500 but then the buffering starts again for hd and you have to move the movie manually back a couple of seconds, if it starts hd again recheck if it is manually overidden to 1000 or less for buffering and then just move the show back or even forward a couple of seconds and hd will automatically shut off. it is a pain in the ass and they need to do something about this. I call customer service and they said they never heard this problem and I google this and found out they knew about this problem for over a month now. 171. Some of the titles that are now streaming HD are incorrectly formatted. One that comes to mind is 'The Seventh Seal' which was originally shot 1.33:1 and is presented widescreen.
