This is Neil Hunt, Chief Product Officer for Netflix.
About five months ago we announced that Netflix would sponsor a sequel to the Netflix Prize. We've given a lot thought to how to sponsor a contest that discovers more about the predictability of Netflix members' movie watching behavior while always ensuring we protect Netflix members' privacy.
In the past few months, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) asked us how a Netflix Prize sequel might affect Netflix members' privacy, and a lawsuit was filed by KamberLaw LLC pertaining to the sequel. With both the FTC and the plaintiffs' lawyers, we've had very productive discussions centered on our commitment to protecting our members' privacy.
We have reached an understanding with the FTC and have settled the lawsuit with plaintiffs. The resolution to both matters involves certain parameters for how we use Netflix data in any future research programs.
In light of all this, we have decided to not pursue the Netflix Prize sequel that we announced on August 6, 2009.
We will continue to explore ways to collaborate with the research community and improve our recommendations system so we can constantly improve the movie recommendations we make for you. So stay tuned.

Trending towards the Lowest Common Denominator just isn't progress.
How about they have to prove that NetFlix data is more invasive than data collected by other sites and entities such as grocery stores, banks, restaurants and websites.
I would gladly opt in to a Netflix program that allowed my data to be used for research purposes.
I'm with @cubby612, I would gladly opt in for better results. I don't exactly consider what movies I watch and rent to be really private (but that's just me, apparently).

One of the saddest news in my life. The first Netflix contest has produced so many incredible insights to the Recommendation System technology. Are we all going to stop now because of some lawyers?

That's so ridiculous. Nobody's forcing anyone to use Netflix. If you think it's violating your privacy, don't use it. And don't stop the rest of us from having an improved experience. Ugh.
Fascinating, how bout instead of a second Netflix prize you give us back the friends features before I cancel my membership? Jerks.

It seems that you can sue for anything you want and hurt good companies without merit. I think this shows why lawsuit reform is needed. Also how does Google not get lawsuits since they take more data than that stored in a cookie that most people don't even know exists.
Did the algorithm from the Netflix Prize 1 actually get implmented on the site? I'm not seeing my recommendations get much better...
Also i'm gonna be the lone dissenter and say that if NetFlix can address privacy concerns in a more effective way than they did last time (not that there was necessarily anything wrong with how they handled it last time) then it's worth taking the extra time to do it right.

One of the really interesting side effects of the first prize is that there is really no way to adequately anonymize large datasets like these -- individuals can be picked out of them with surprising accuracy.
So, read Paul Ohm's argument about why the second prize should have been canceled before you go moaning about lawyers ruining a good thing.

Although, while I'm happy with my many diverse and interesting recommendations, I don't hold too much store by how NF thinks I'll rate them, preferring to listen to friends and check-out member reviews, Rotten Tomato and certain trusted critics before queuing a movie, so would personally be happier that you spend the 2nd $mil. on other things : like, say, bringing back an option to e-mail Customer Service! But thanks anyway.
I could care less about the recommendations system... how about reinstating our friends features. ive been recommened more movies from other members that were much better than i ever queued from the recommendations system.

I would gladly trade Netflix's recommending system for getting notes back on the movie homepage. That was a critical feature. Netflix's recommending system is not a critical feature. I would rather see the average member review instead of what Netflix thinks I'll rate something, seriously.
When are we going to get Notes, and Friends Ratings back on the homepage?
The best recommendations I ever received for movies were from my Netflix Friends - the great feature which you have slowly but surely removed from the site.
While I certainly don't have anything against your contests, I am a bit perplexed by the amount of effort you put into them. For many of us, if you wanted to predicted what we would be watching next, all you had to do was look at what our Friends recommended to us (and vice versa). Our Friends have a much better idea of what we like/dislike than any formula.
I think i agree with the most resents posts here. I dont find netflix's recommendation systerm very useful. However, I did really enjoy recommending and being recommended good movies to watch using notes and seeing what others said about "some movie". That I agree was critical and now I feel rather blind.

I called Netflix and spoke with a supervisor named Mitch if I remember his name correctly about the friends feature and it seemed from his response that they didnt want to continue to pay to improve or support the friends features.
My only concern is that the service from Netflix has obviously gotten much worse after they got their nice check from the movie companies to wait 28 days for new releases... so Netflix is making money at our expense and depriving us of useful features and services at the same time. That seems awefully greedy. :-[ I used to like Netflix above all others in the business and was a champion at getting other people to sign up... I'm definately reconsidering my position as I'm exploring other options.

Here is a simple solution.
Let netflix customers opt-in to the research. I expect the vast majority of people would not be worried about their rental hsitory being exposed. Just put a pop-up on the website that asks users to volunteer to have their data used: explain briefly about the research, how the data will be anonymized, the potential risk of being identified, and a link to more detailed explanations. Then just pose this simple question to the customer: "Would you like to assist in the research by contributing your data? Please only say 'YES' if you are not concerned about any risk of having your rental and rating history exposed."
Then just run the contest using data from customers who have opted in.
Who cares... seriously. When do we get so see what out friends thought about a movie they've seen. This was instrumental in my decision making!
Can't you get around these issues by just adding an Opt-In account setting along the lines of "I would like to participate in Netflix Research Projects. By clicking this box I agree to these _terms_."?
I am a member and would love to help, even at the risk of someone knowing what movies I have watched and what I like.

No matter what any company does to try to improve its product, there is a lawyer looking to make a bunch of bucks by suing. Doesn't matter whether the case has any validity or not. This is just a form of extortion.
This is off topic, but I can't find a way to ask Netflix about this.
If I find a movie that you say hasn't been released but appears to have DVDs available, how do I ask about this. I know that in some cases you might not be able to offer the movie because of some contractual or legal issue or that the DVD is actually out of print and you can't obtain a copy. It would be better is you gave more detail other than "unknown" on the availability.
What a pity that a bunch of lawyers looking for a payout (which is what these settlements are really about) ruin it for everyone else. The creativity that goes into these things always results in improvements. And we can all see what others think anyway.
Who needs an algorithm? I found the "what your friends thought" feature to be extremely accurate in predicting and suggesting movies for me. Instead of spending millions on an algorithm, how about putting that feature back, upgrading the community features in general, and letting us deal with other human beings on the site instead of some half-assed algorithm that will *never* really figure out what *I* like to watch?
GIVE US BACK OUR FRIENDS FEATURES. Keep your algorithm.

I find it so strange that Netflix has made such a big deal touting their amazing algorithm for predicting the movie tastes of its members when user input can perform this function quite nicely and allow us to make our own decisions! What's the deal, Netflix? Seriously, it's been over a week and still not a peep.
And just to reiterate, I have spent about zero time on Netflix's website since the new page came along. And every time I say to myself "I wonder what my friends thought about movie X" and have an urge to go to the site, I remember IT'S COMPLETELY USELESS TO ME NOW.
I'm so sad. I don't like being sad on Friday night, Netflix.
To be honest, the money spent on the Netflix Prize would have been better spent on KEEPING THE FRIENDS AND LISTS FEATURES. I always found the friends and list features far more useful than the auto-generated suggestions.
To all theses who would give your privacy away,as long as it doesn't make me have to opt-out, i don't care. But what i watch in the PRIVACY of MY HOME is none of your damed business.
Anything that has to do with Privacy with a company should never be an opt-out. Everything should be opt-in,then theres no confusion,no mistakes.

Like others have said, add an "opt-in" option in the Netflix preferences for those of us who have no problem allowing our viewing habit data to be used for research. I would definitely allow it.

I am disappointed in Netflix. You leave so much out with your PR speak. You do not mention that the anonymity of the dataset had been broken in the past. YOu do not mention that if the data set reveals a person's ZIP code, birthdate and gender, there's an 87 percent chance that the person can be uniquely identified." YOu do not mention the lawsuit from... "An in-the-closet lesbian mother is suing Netflix for privacy invasion, alleging the movie rental company made it possible for her to be outed when it disclosed insufficiently anonymous information about nearly half-a-million customers as part of its $1 million contest to improve its recommendation system. ...
I personally would opt out. I pay money to use a system. You should take part of that money and hire in house developers to do this work: preferable out of work American developers. One million would go a long way...
How about a contest that would finally give us close captioning on streaming content? I don't need recommendations, I need captions, just like millions of deaf and hard-of-hearing people.
I would totally opt in to allow Netflix to share some anonymized data (i.e. everything except address, name, and contact information).
Customers that don't want it shouldn't need to opt out, but I think if you explain to people how this can make Netflix better, people would totally opt in.

Neil, I think the first contest was a huge success in pushing the state-of-the-art in the research and development of recommender algorithms. Please consider a second version of the contest that allows users to opt-in to make their data available for research. I bet a second contest that included genera, director, producer, actors, etc... of the movies would achieve a 20% improvement!
I have a decision to make now. That decision is whether or not I will stay a Netflix customer. Since signing-up (with much convicing from my gf), I have been extremely happy with the service (especially the instant streaming on my PS3).
I've been looking up KamberLaw's cases and apparently they're in the business of extortion (I can only find one legitimite case in their porfolio where they were on the "right" side). It's one thing if a company or individual is too weak to fight back against an extortionist but Netflix is not. I'm going to try and find the details of the case (since they weren't linked here) and if Netflix gave in to some nonsense lawsuit (with the FTC involved, I'm pretty sure it was nonsense), I'll probably cancel my subscription.
I'm sure it won't have an effect but at least I won't have to give my money to a business that cowers when threatened by criminals.

The Netflix recommendation system worked great until March 4, 2010, when they removed the Friends features such as Leaving Notes and Lists.
There is no better recommendation than what your trusted FRIENDS think. I would even be willing to pay extra for the Friends feature. Imagine, a million people paying a dollar extra a month for the feature. Heck, that million dollars would pay for the Netflix Prize!
Friends, notes, lists: Please bring 'em back. Just put that extra little tab on the movie page. Member Reviews, Critic Reviews, and Friends Reviews.

Insert a "FRIENDS NOTES" section right next to the "CRITICS REVIEWS" section on the individual movie pages.

Ok, this is off topic, but i want to submit an idea to netflix. It would be awesome if there was a way to watch newly released dvd's instantly from home the day they are released everywhere else. Maybe charge a $1 fee and once the movie is purchased it is available to watch for 12 hours or 24 hours or something like that. I often go to redbox and rent them because i dont want to wait for the mail and i want to watch a NEW movie that same day. Redbox already has our credit card info stored so it shouldnt be much to just click a button and charge our card the fee and let the movie start. Just an idea.

What a joke. Your vaunted recommendation system is crap and if you've used it you'd know that. I've rated more than eight hundred movies and I don't think your system has picked more than one or two movies I've found interesting. Compare that to the hundreds of movies I've found through the friends and list features and you've got a pathetically wrong-headed allocation of resources.

As others have said, the Friends feature was a much better resource for me than your predictive algorithms. You're initial handling of the Profiles situation was poor but at least in the end you listened to your customers. Your handling of the Friends feature is by far worse and I very much fear you won't listen to your customers this time.
I used to rave about Netflix to others. Now, not so much. You've already lost the free advertising I gave your company. Now you are on the verge of losing a customer of 6 years.

Who gives a shit about your Netflix prize update? We want our friends feature back.
Here is part of a letter that I sent to Leslie Kilgore of Netflix who NEVER responded to me:
I plan on writing an upcoming blog entry on how companies in the technology world go completely downhill when they stop listening to their customers and start letting their marketing & sales department drive their company instead of their customers' desires.
Netflix has now made the Top 10 List for these horrible & distracted companies who no longer care about their customers' needs, and it is obviously because of people like you who close your ears to what your customers really want.
If you'd like just a few examples of how your company abuses & mistreats & ignores its customers, here are just a FEW of the ways:
1. You have slowly been phasing out the Friends features of your new website, and now you have almost completely removed this feature with the latest Netflix website revamp. Yet this friends feature was undoubtedly the #1 most useful feature of your website for every single Netflix customer that I know of. In fact, it was the ONLY feature that set your website apart from competing movie rental companies online. To be able to see your friends' ratings & notes for any particular movie is absolutely mission critical in knowing whether a movie is worth seeing or not. What OUR OWN TRUSTED FRIENDS say about a movie is FAR MORE IMPORTANT than what even A MILLION ANONYMOUS PEOPLE say about a movie. For Netflix to not grasp this concept shows a terrible disconnect in what you know about your customers' desires. (By the way, even before you phased out this feature, there were DOZENS of bugs in this friends feature because you decided to not spend time developing it. For example, if you left a note about a movie, it would not show up to newer friends in the future. Also, if you sent a note about a movie to someone, it did not send your star rating along with that note.)

5. You post an Official Netflix blog and you seem to inspire comments on your blog, but your staff never responds to the comments that your customers leave there. So it is clear that Netflix does not want to have a 2-way conversation with its customers, but that it is interested in having a 1-way conversation with its customers.
If you have anything to say before I publish this piece on Netflix, I would be more than happy to entertain your response.
Lawsuits shouldn't be necessary to get NF to restore the FRIENDS ratings onto the movie detail pages. Why is NF seemingly ignoring so many members' requests for something that increased their/our enjoyment of NF membership? At least, someone in a position of responsibility at NF should address this issue on this blog AND on a page that displays every time someone logs in as a member.
I'm very disappointed that a company I have loved and championed for so long has made such a significant feature removal on the movie details page without both explaining the decision thoroughly and addressing all the concerns associated with it that have poured in.
Please address the friends issue or return the friends ratings to the movie details page. If you plan not to, at least tell us. Just talk to us. We are your customers.

Please bring back the What Your Friends Thought feature. It is easily the handiest tool for finding new movies to watch, and I really miss it.
If Netflix doesn't wish to continue to pay to improve or support the friends features then more and more people (like myself) will stop using their product, since it has become a much staler version of what it once was.

I'd really like to see the friends ratings placed back on individual movie pages. I think with the new design there is plenty of empty space for it still left.
Someone(possibly a Netflix employee) tried to defend Netflix's decision to remove the friend feature from the movie pages by saying this:
"They are in the business of making the highest number of customers happy and doing it in the most efficient (read profitable) way. Some decisions are going to be unpopular with the minority (some even with the majority), but they are necessary to keep the business profitable and not beaten up by their competitors."
This kind of comment is just ridiculous:

I have an idea that would help Netflix better predict what movies I would like to see. I suggest that separate queues be provided for different family members. The reason that Netflix can not accurately predict what movies I would like to see is that it assumes that I have chosen and or rated all the movies that have been seen on my account. My teenage son likes movies that I have no desire to see. My nine year old daughter rates everything five stars. It would be great if we could have separate queues on the instant viewing. Maybe there is someway to tag which family member is requesting which movie. I do not know if this is a workable idea. The point is that your program for recommending movies is probably excellent. The reason the results for me are not always excellent is because the program has no way of knowing that it is my son watching all the kung fu movies and it is my daughter watching all the puppy movies! I hope these comments are beneficial to you. Our whole family loves Netflix. It is without a doubt the best value for anyone's entertainment dollar.

On the off chance that anyone actually reads this, I'd like to say that the pop-under adds (which are almost invariably for netfix) do not in any way endear netflix to me. They are annoying. I'm not alone in this sentiment, simply google 'netflix popunder'.

If Netflix only had 1 million customers, (according to Wikipedia it's more like 10 million), and if all of their customers were only on the 1 DVD out at a time plan at $8.99 a month, (most people, Netflix says, are on the 2 or 3 plan at $13.99 and $16.99), that would be $107,880,000 a year. If they really do have 10 million customers, that's at least $1,078,800,000 a year. That's right... over 1 billion dollars. Surely with all that money they could afford to hire a couple of people to maintain the Friends feature. Maybe they could hire back a few of those 50 people they laid off because that piece of shit Silverlight was so scary good.

My suggestion is the ability to manage multiple watch instantly lists, one for the kids, one for the adults, for example. Not sure how this would interface with Roku, etc., but it would be nice to have separate lists so my kids don't click on an R rated movie while searching for their shows on the Roku.

I just want to say I LOVE YOU NETFLIX. I love all the choice's to watch instantly on my computer. I am a Legend of the Seeker fan and due to some sporting event missed the last episode. Sure enough Netflix had it here and I was able to watch it. I also like to watch Spartacus and some of my favorite childhood shows, like Kolchak, Hardy boys and Buck Rogers. The only thing I wish you could improve on is when new releases are listed. If I know the movie name I can find it, but if you just search all new releases, it doesn't necessary come up.
