Recent Site Change

We've recently made a slight change to the Netflix Web site to highlight movies and TV episodes you can watch instantly on your TV or computer. When you visit www.netflix.com the first tab you’ll see is “Watch Instantly” followed by the “Browse DVDs” tab. As always, you use these tabs to browse movies and TV episodes you’d like to watch instantly or receive on DVD in the mail.

Using the “Watch Instantly” tab, just find something you want to watch, click Play and the movie will start on your computer, often in as little as 30 seconds. Or, you can click “Add to Instant Queue,” which immediately puts the title in your instant Queue for you to watch any time on your TV via a Netflix ready device like the Xbox 360, PS3, Blu-ray disc players by LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony, and Insignia, the Roku, or TiVo, or on internet connected TVs by LG Electronics and Sony. DVDs and Blu-ray discs continue to be easily found and added to your Queue using the “Browse DVDs” tab. We’ve also moved the “Friends” link from the top of the home page to the bottom.

  1. To be honest, I'm not sure that I can tell the difference, I'm just glad that you got rid of the Netflix on PS3 ad that was taking up real estate at the top of my Watch Instantly page. I didn't mind the reminder as much as it made it difficult to rate movies that I had already watched. At the very least, it'd be nice to acknowledge your ads and have a way to tell Netflix not to show them to me again. Without an option to turn it off, it's a major annoyance for a product that supposed to not have any commercials.

  2. That's nice. Can we have Netflix for our Wii now? :-) Then I might actually use Instant Watch more.

  3. I sure hope Netflix isn't putting more priority to Instant Watch than DVDs and Blu-rays.

Availability has been getting really worse lately, too.

  4. I just want a player that supports v-sync, unlike Silverlight. And the argument that they need a browser plug-in to thwart piracy is bullshit. If you get Starz Play through Verizon, you use media player 11, and the movie is downloaded right to your hard drive. It's Netflix/Microsoft that just wants you to use Silverlight. Even though they both know it sucks.

  5. The watch instantly feature has the potential to be great. But apparently netflix cuts you off after watching so much(what other explanation is there when your connection to netflix is just stalled out)I thought you were supposed to get unlimited internet streaming(thats what I pay for), I guess not. That is the definition of bait and switch.Netflix has a bad history of doing things like this to it's users(throttling).I am preparing to cut off my subscription if this is not addressed.I wonder when the class action will be filed.

  6. You forgot to mention that you've also removed the Friends tab completely and hidden it down at the bottom. I can only assume that all the friends features will eventually disappear completely... unfortunate as I enjoyed that page and all the features involved with it.

  7. I sure hope Netflix is putting more priority to Instant Watch than DVDs and Blu-rays.

There is know doubt to me it will be the way we all watch TV soon.

  8. I really don't like this change. I still rent more DVD/Blu-Ray than I stream, I would like the homepage to be DVD/Blu-Ray, not the instant page.

Davis, you said "I'm just glad that you got rid of the Netflix on PS3 ad that was taking up real estate at the top of my Watch Instantly page." It still shows up for me for some reason.

  9. It looks like Netflix is having some streaming issues today. I have not been able to get a good connection this afternoon on any movie I try to watch. I have no problems with my internet connection so it must be Netflix. I usually have an excellent connection and viewing quality.

  10. Finally we get the rating back from our friends and faves, then you move the friends link to the bottom as if its on the way out! Honestly, the friends area is my favorite part of your site....I get all my recommendations there when I see the scrolling rating from strangers, and get to see what all my friends are watching.... and where did Netflix community go?

    ReplyDelete
  11. And once again Netflix moves the link to the "Friends & Community" section during a "minor" redesign.

Why not just kill that section completely instead of continually pushing it out of the way and say "no changes are planned", when clearly Netflix has no interest in maintaining that section any longer?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I do NOT enjoy the decision to banish the "Friends" link to the limbo at the bottom of the page. I do NOT enjoy this one bit.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Why did you move the Friends link to the bottom of the page? WHY?

Don't you people understand by now that people LIKE the Friends page? That we USE it as a resource? You need to stop screwing around with it - that's the definition of poor customer service. Put the Friends tab back at the top of the page. Please. And I promise you, I'm not alone here.

There is no discernible reason why you should move it to the bottom like that. It just makes it LESS CONVENIENT. And as we've seen from this and other customer comments, many Netflix users (myself included) use the Friends feature a great deal. And yet you have treated it (and, by proxy, your customers) with complete disregard lately - the move to the bottom is just a continuation of that.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Put the Friends tab back where it was. That will be all.

    ReplyDelete
  15. This is what they did with the old New Releases page too... first they hide it down at the bottom, then they got rid of it, only accesible if you know the url and have it bookmarked.

Will I have to bookmark the hidden friends section too now in order to find it like I have to do with the secret new releases page, or are you just going to kill friends completely, after we've all put so much effort and energy into the friends features? Don't be lame Netflix, why take this away too?

    ReplyDelete
  16. The change in the site works fine. Things that still need fixed. I do not want to see movies I have rated(there fore seen) as suggestions. I would like to be able to rate by fractional stars. Don't care if in the past you got less response from a target market. What about those of us who are waiting for this? The others will figure it out at some point. I am tired of useless and irrelivant suggestions. I am also tired of not accurately being able to rate a movie that reflects my actual opinion and not just something in the neighborhood. Why Cater to the least common deniminator?

    ReplyDelete
  17. When is Netflix going to support Linux? There are silverlight clones. Is Microsoft not allowing it?

As a die-hard Linux supporter, I've contemplated cancelling my subscription because of the lack of support. Please consider it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Why do you continue to bury Friends? A recommendation engine is no match for a Friend Note. A Top 100 list is no match for peering into the queue of a friend. It blows my mind that Friends is not continually improved upon and promoted. An improved Friends section would only add value to your service. At the very least, please do not phase the feature out entirely.

    ReplyDelete
  19. When you think that switching the tabs for IW and DVD is an "improvement" that merits its own blog post, but try to sneak past the fact that you've just made it VERY DIFFICULT for me to get to my own review pages, or to see the community pages at all, it shows me that you actually have contempt for your customers.

That does not bode well for a continuing relationship with those customers. I guess I'll be "selling high" when I get rid of my Netflix stocks?

  22. I love this new idea of streaming instead of renting the dvds. This is also very much easier for military members on base at least in the States. I just wish movies remained in my cue instead of becoming unavilable after a certain time because I get busy and finally have a chance to watch them and they are no longer available for streaming. Also please keep the friends section. Otherwise, keep up the great work and very Happy Holidays.

  24. Why in the world is the "friends" page buried like this? It's by far the element of the site that I get the most use out of. First we spend months without getting to see ratings of non-netflix-rented movies by our friends on the page (with the promise that it's due to some sort of update to the feature), and now I have to ctrl+f to even SEE this section of the site.

I think it's clear by these comments that tucking away "friends" is a serious mistake, and I hope it will be rectified immediately. I've been on Netflix for five years now, and I do not appreciate this one bit. I don't understand why it's being done in the first place, especially when you consider that there is plenty of room up top for a "friends" tab. What sort of message are you trying to send to long-time Netflix users who have been utilizing the "friends" page on a daily basis for years?

  26. cI don't understand why you've hidden the friends page and pretended that it's an improvement. Sneaky, bad service, bad business. Don't understand what anyone has to gain by this. Hopefully Netflix will listen to everyone's pleas on this, something they seem to have been doing less and less over the last couple of years. Don't alienate people who utilize the services you've been providing, please

  27. Stop hiding the Friends page in the weeds! Also, on the new-look pages for each movie, show us our friends' ratings; those have disappeared as well!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'd like to add my voice to those requesting that the Friends page be returned to prominence. It would be great if it could once again have its own tab, or at least a link of one of the other tabs. Also, for the Instant Watch tab, it would be nice to have a subheading for our Instant Watch queue. As for switching the tab order of Instant Watch and Browse, I guess that's okay, though it wouldn't have been my preference. I was liking the homepage as it was, more or less. Still, I do appreciate the attempt to keep improving the site.

  31. What a terrible decision to send the friends tab into oblivion. I think the community section brings customer loyalty to Netflix as people who have invested a great deal of time in adding friends and faves are unlikely to change services. Bring it back to a visible place, community gives life to Netflix!

  32. I'd love to try the Watch it Now but I alas, am not the main account holder. As far as I can tell, this means I can't have a Watch it Now queue or even browse Watch it Now selections. My husband and I find separate queues to be one of the most important things about our membership. Watch it Now is never going to work for us (me!) when I can't access it. Please fix this.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The Friends and Community feature is the main reason I use Netflix over your competitors. The idea of having and maintaining a community based around movies and reviews and recommendations brings a level of movie-lover involvement that no one has done before. If this feature is eventually removed it will be a huge mistake on Netflix's part and a sad step backward in social networking for movie lovers. Show us, your devoted customers, that this is not your plan and make the Friends and Community feature more prominent on the site. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Netflix you are now a truly all American company.

You've done everything you could to shit on your customers. Between hiding the features people like the most, to silencing people by removing the Suggestions and Comments link to utterly destroying instant viewing with that piece of shit Silverlight.

At least you have that "Commercial Tab" where I can see all sorts of devices for sale to stream to my TV. One quick question... how much money are you getting paid by those companies to advertise on your site?

Netflix (Reed Hastings) ... you sicken me.

  37. Netflix; the cardinal sin of corporate blogging is to treat a blog like a traditional one-shot advertisement. You've got to cultivate followers and reward commenters. You should have someone responding to these concerns, if only to just reassure people that someone is listening and cares.

Brand loyalty can be generated by a quality product but damaged by a lack of attention and customer service.

Yet this is how all corporations do it. They have no obligation to mingle with the riff raff.

Brand loyalty can be generated by a quality product but damaged by a lack of attention and customer service.
They have a quality product that millions want - DVDs. They have the obligation to stockholders to dismiss a part of their service that only <1% of their user base utilizes yet sucks up a significant portion of resources.

  39. the availability of stuff is kind of becoming a problem. i was in the middle of watching a TV series on instant- i've only gotten through 5 episodes- and all of the sudden i look today and it's not avaialable anymore- no warning, no email to me, not "hey, we're about to remove this on date X so hurry up and watch it before it's gone. honestly, i'm pretty pissed off- and even more so because there is NO WAY to send you an email or submit any comments or complaints online (which frankly, is a travesty of customer service and how i ended up here.)

There is something extremely wrong with this way of doing "improvements".

  45. I love instant streaming, but could Netflix please get LG to fix its implementation on some of their BluRay players? Certain instant titles on the LG BD370 play back at the wrong aspect ratio. For example, 88 Minutes and Spanish Prisoner play back squeezed in 4:3 instead of the 16:9 format that is intended. These are Starz Play titles. The Silverlight player doesn't have this problem.

LG tech support is worthless on this issue since they keep telling me how to set the aspect ratio of my television which is not the issue.

    ReplyDelete
  46. @Anonymous at 6:47

Many of the StarzPlay movies are encoded at the 4:3 ratio, even for the Roku. Not sure if the masters they supplied to Netflix are in the 4:3 ratio or the choice was made by Netflix at encode time, (likely the former) but Roku owners have had the issue issue for a while now. You're not alone.

  54. Now that they are prioritizing Watch instantly, how about enabling it for alternate profiles.

My wife's suggestions have become useless since we share the primary account's watch instantly queue. It also makes looking for movies and adding them a lot harder.

  55. I am a loyal Netflix user and I energetically Friend and follow good reviewers because I love films. The thing that separated the Netflix service from others, in my mind, is that I did not need to rely on the standard movie summary or rating matrix but could find, follow, and recommend films to other users. Should the 'friend' community be erased, you will lose me, my 500+ carefully thought out reviews, and my work in converting neighbors/family to your service.

I do not expect Netflix to be Facebook, I expect it to allow users to inspire each other to rent particular movies. There hasn't been a new release I wanted to see in ten years. Friends tell me of another can't-miss classic every day. Without them my queue would be empty! Remember that Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think Netflix is failing to understand which sort of users love the Friends section. The top reviewers, the energetic 'Frienders,' the list makers do a better job of whetting the appetite for a movie than the watered down (and hugely inaccurate) star rating system.

Alienating the people who drum up business for your more exotic films (or anything that isn't hot off the Hollywood crap list) is a weird business model boys.

  63. what happened to the browse all movies by star rating? that was about the only way i've been selecting movies to watch. i'll probably just cancel my account after my queue runs out if i can't find it again. i went from 3 dvds to 2 when first charged for blu-ray, and from 2 to 1 when blu ray price increased. will go from 1 to 0 now that movie finding became much worse. wasn't the "netflix prize" supposed to result in better movie suggestions?

  67. I really don't understand how Netflix can claim to be focusing on Internet streaming while *removing* content from their instant play section.

Yes, I said removing. My son watches a lot of the instant view verisons of the Mighty Machines series, and Thomas the Train, Bob the Builder and some other children's shows. Given the attention span of a 2-year old, this was a great way to have a ready collection of these programs. However, lately we've noticed that a lot (literally 80% of some series) of the shows we used to watch are no longer in the catalog.

I have *no* idea why they'd be eliminating any content at all -- isn't the #1 complaint that there isn't enough streaming content? And since it's SD content, it doesn't seem like it could possibly take up much space on their servers either.

Netflix seems to be in the process of eliminating the only reason I get my Roku and kept my Netflix subscription, which was the high-quality children's content.

Unfortunately, Netflix also really doesn't provide an avenue to complain about such things either (trying finding an email address or phone number for that on their web site!), so we have to leave comments on blogs like this and hope someone from Netflix reads them.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Most movies aren't worth watching. Even a shut in like me can find something to do other than gawking at a screen. The reason my subscription rate is so high (I rent a lot of movies) is that the friends and community suggestions I get are rather good at predicting my tastes and the garbage disposal general star ratings are terrible at it.

Eliminating the community features may save you a few moments of maintenance on your site, but it alienates users. If you lose the friends section, you will lose members. Good, high-paying, previously loyal members too! Watch which demographic you alienate!

  69. give me my friends tab

    ReplyDelete
  70. The Friends link is a huge part of my daily NF journey. Like many others, me and my friends rely on each others opinions for movie suggestions. It's silly to think you don't need this. Hasn't Facebook, My Space, and Twitter taught you folks at Netflix anything?

Social Networking is the here and now, and you have a perfect storm of SN and movies, why would you attempt to bury it? It's pretty mind-boggling, so add my name to the vote that it be moved back to the rather bare top menu.

Also, add me in to the mass population that wants to be able to rate flicks in half stars.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Why would Microsoft create a player (Silverlight) that...
    A. doesn't support video (no v-sync)
    B. works better on their competitors operating system (Apple)
    C. works better on their competitors browser (Firefox)

    It just seems so ass-backwards

And why would Netflix associate themselves and their reputation with such a company?

    Oh yeah. Money.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I can't find a way to leave a comment or feedback at the Netflix site, so I'm leaving it here. I've been a Netflix subscriber for over four years now and there is one thing driving me crazy - popup ads. It is causing me to rethink my subscription. These ads are not on Netflix itself, but as I browse various news and media sites, I find Netflix popup ads appearing dispite my popup blocker. I have to believe that if it annoys me, it is annoying far more people. This is a foolish business tactic to employ and will ultimately cause the loss of customers.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Is there a way to view Friend's Instant Queue? Is there a place to email questions to?

    ReplyDelete
  74. Not too happy with your new site changes. You've made it even more difficult to look for movies "releasing this week." Obviously you don't want customers to have easy access to this information and choose to bury it as much as possible. I find myself going to the Blockbuster site to see what new movies are available each week. They even offer a list of movies that will be "releasing next week." Luckily for you, that is the only thing I like about Blockbuster. But I have several friends who have started going to the Blockbuster site for this reason as well.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I don't like that the Friends link was pushed completely to the bottom of the page. It took me forever to find it again.

I think the Friends section should be one of the most prominent on the site, easy to find, and redesigned in a way that allows your friends to easily see what movies are added and which have been watched. It seems kind of a jumbled mess right now, as several ratings or movies that have been watched don't make it into the sliderule. Plus, I'm getting different Ratings totals depending on where I look. The Friends feature should also make the Most Actors/Directors watched and profiles much more easier to find. It's so buried and takes so many clicks to even see that stuff.

Other than adding movies, this is the only other reason I come to the site, so I'm hoping this feature isn't going away and that it will be redesigned to be much more functional and effective than it is now.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I don't understand why the friends section is all pushed down. It should be the most prominent page. This is one of the reasons why we choose Netflix over other companies and it doesn't seem like this is a priority for you, sadly.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Seriously, what the fuck happened to the shortcut at the bottom of the instant view page that allowed us to browse by rating? I don't want to sort my lists by genre. I preferred having all the movies and tv series in one list and then I'd go from the 5 star movies/series to 3 stars and just select from those. I don't want to have to go to every genre only to find the same movies listed multiple times across multiple genres. Give me one master list!

Do us all a favor and quit fucking around with features that some of us already use. You already tried to screw up that weekly list of new arrivals and now this. I'm getting really annoyed at the dipshits running the website.

  90. Hey Netflix! If you're gonna phase out the Friends section (which you shouldn't, but whatever), can you at least be up-front about it? 92. I am really missing a few features that have just disappeared along with this recent site change -- related to Friends features, I think. First, I miss being able to add a movie to a top ten list from that movie's page. I love the top ten lists -- both making them for myself, and reading others'. Second, I miss seeing what lists each movie is on. That was a great way to find more movies like one I just watched -- movies I might never come across otherwise. And third, I really miss being able to recommend (i.e., leave a note for a friend) a movie to someone from that movie's page. I loved using that feature, and loved it when people recommended movies for me.

In summary, I really miss several of the Friends-related features of the site, which were a big part of what made me love Netflix. I won't claim that their disappearance will cause me to drop my Netflix service altogether. But they were what made me talk about Netflix with friends, recommend it to new potential users, and generally feel loyalty and affection for the company. Yes, I like the DVDs, of course. But it's the strange little social networking quirks that make Netflix fun for me.

So, I'd really like if you could bring them back. And stop marginalizing Friends, and start embracing it for encouraging customer loyalty, which in turn makes the site -- and the service -- better for everyone.

  94. Will there be any implementation of a content request system? There are movies/shows that I would love to see on Streaming Instant. I have Top Gear season 10 in my queue however all the other seasons are not available. Maybe Netflix can implement some type of voting/request system?
Is anything like this in the works?

  95. My most favorite part of the Netflix website is the Friends features. Whether leaving notes, writing reviews, or making lists, the Friends features keep me coming back for more.

I love suggesting Netflix to people, and tell them to "Friend" me, or meeting up with people who already use Netflix and sharing movie ideas.

Interesting how the comments on this "Recent Site Change" post have most all been about losing the Friends tab instead of the Watch Instantly tab. Please put the Friends tab back on top.

However, in regards to the Watch Instantly tab, I would like there to be an option, or preference setting, that allows you to choose which of the pages, Watch Instantly or Browse DVDs, that is your Netflix home page.
Personally, I've only ever watched two or three movies with Watch Instantly, versus hundreds, maybe thousands of Blu-rays and DVDs rented since 2002. With xBox 360 and PS3 streaming, maybe someday I'll Watch Instantly more, but that won't have an effect on my Netflix home page on my computer. I still want to jump right to looking at Blu-rays and DVDs when I get to Netflix.com

Thank you Netflix for taking the time to read all these comments, and alerting us to changes in your service. Communication is and always will be the key to our continued successful relationship.

  97. The blog entry "Instant watching on Mac, Firefox" is closed, and two years old. I recently installed a media center PC with Linux Mint. You chose a MS solution when there are plenty of solutions for viewing video that are supported by multiple platforms. I installed "Moonlight", which is a work-alike for MS Silverlight. I understand that the problem has to do with DRM, but there is more than one DRM manager, and there are DRMs available for Linux. I've had NetFlix for several years, but am now looking for an alternate source. If the other guys have Linux support, I can cancel my NetFlix account. I didn't feel quite that strong about this until I read a two year old blog entry!

  98. If you really want to make some real improvement, you should allow people to go back and edit their movie reviews. Better yet, allow other people to comment back on someone's movie reviews.

I also noticed that there's no way to contact customer service via email. Shouldn't that be something very basic and obvious?

  99. Extremely upset that Friends has been put on death row. As a subscriber since 2002, this is a very disappointing change. Your customers deserve to hear more from you on this issue: Why are you on the path to obsoleting this feature?

  100. How is it that I go through three cycles, and not one of the four films I'm waiting to see are available yet??? Long wait, very long wait... I'm getting the feeling Netflix is not buying enough rights to the movies it should be to satisfy demand. I have netflix so I won't buy Blu-rays, Now I am starting to reconsider blockbuster. I hate blockbuster, but if netflix can't deliver, and if they have sub-par availability, what choice will I have???

I think your customer service is outstanding and the turnover of movies from mailing to arrival of the new ones, is as promised, one day. It's because of Netflix that I never even bothered to get cable. Netflix is much more economical and I get to watch movies at MY leisure. Job well done!

In 2009 it (Google) was hassled by the Federal Trade Commission over possible anticompetitive connections because it shared two board members with Apple, a situation that got resolved when Google CEO Eric Schmidt quit Apple's board, and Arthur Levinson, an Apple board member, quit the Google board.

I was reading this online and thought it sounded a little familiar... but then neither of them have the money (or should I say power) of Netflix/Microsoft.

  107. I don't like having to click twice - once to open the window and twice to then select add to queue. Why can't you have the add to queue option below the select to view option on the first screen as before. This is inefficient. I also agree with the comments by Anonymous (12/17/09). In future DVDs may be a thing of the past but broadband in the U.S. is not particularly good (compared to Korea for example). Until video streaming is better I still prefer to have the DVD although I do watch instantly occasionally. Speaking of video streaming picture quality, when are you going to make the jump from 720 to 1080?

  110. Netflix folks-

just got a PS3 and I'm successfully streaming. The video's not perfect but that's ok with me. My only concern is the lack of available titles. What is the criteria for making a title available? How long does it take for a new movie to be available? I thought I was going to ween myself off of Comcast OnDemand but it doesn't look that way.

    ReplyDelete
  111. long wait, very long wait.... cycle after cycle yet the price went up this year.

the streaming is a joke. quality is poor at best. the so called 'HD' selection is laughable. one or two hollywood titles from years past and 100's of throwaway b movies that wouldn't be shown at 3am on basic cable.

  113. I put "Peggy Sue Got Married" into my Instant Queue. When I tried to play it, I got an error message saying "An error occurred communicating with Netflix. Please try again". I tried a half dozen times, and even removed the movie from the queue and than put it back in. I am unable to watch that movie.

When I tried to report the error, "Peggy Sue Got Married" was not in my Instant Queue on my Netflix account on the internet, although it was still showing up in my Instant Queue on the Tivo box. Since the site is designed to only accept complaints about movies which show up in the queue, I was unable to complain.

Your website design is flawed, because there is no "Contact Us" link that allows a customer to send a general complaint or other feedback to the Netflix staff.

In this blog, when I used MSIE 8.0, I was unable to enter text in the "Leave your comment" field. It only worked when I used Firefox.

I'd like to summarize by saying that this stressful experience during my free trial period does not encourage me to want to join NetFlix.

    Thank you,

  114. I just thought I should tell all the Linux users here that an alternative to Netflix Video On Demand does exist. My reccomendation is you pop your head over to ThinkPenguin.com and ask them. They are doing everything to change the status of GNU/Linux on the desktop. http://penguinassist.thinkpenguin.com/ is a free firefox browser plug-in that keeps track of black holes on the Internet and routes around them. You'll be able to get your video-on-demand with it installed. It doesn't exactly give you access to Netflix-but does give you access to most of the Netflix content. ThinkPenguin also wants to hear about any websites that you find where you have trouble on GNU/Linux and you aren't redirected by the plug-in. They don't necessarily have to be incompatible with GNU/Linux. Adobe's flash download site is listed within the 'black-list' here- for offering deb, rpm, tar.gz, etc. This plug-in is aimed at Ubuntu users although it will work on other platforms.

  123. I am extremely frustrated with the changes Netflix has made recently, specifically with the search features. The search never worked well for me before even with nearly 3000 movies I have rated. Previously, I found that many movies showing a low rating for me (under 3.0) might actually be rated highly by the general public, and when I watched them, I found that I enjoyed them, too. I used to rely on being able to easily identify these by mousing-over the movies while I was adding to my queue, and to look not only at the "Best Guess" ratings for me, but to look also at the "general public" ratings. Since you have now removed the "general public" ratings from being viewed when you mouse-over a movie, I have to rely now only on whatever you think the "best guess" is for me. I find that this is still less than 50% accurate for me and now I spend a considerably more time while being completely frustrated with the tedious steps it requires now to search for a fricken movie.. GEEZ!! How much trouble would it have been just to leave some of these small tools, like the "average for viewers like you" rating or "general ratings" as you had before? Did you think no one used these? In order to see this general public rating now, you have to click on the specific movie and go to each individual movie home page. In short, the new search mechanism does not appear to work any better than before and you've now forced us to rely on the inaccuracy of the "best Guess" rating without any other tools, and to spend more time finding movies to watch by your further removing features that were once there before. In the 3 years I've been with Netflix, I've noticed one thing that has been a huge annoyance and disappointment over the years. With nearly every feature or service you have provided, you always end up taking away from it and/or chopping out large parts of it until there is nothing left, all in the name of "enhancements." Enhancements are supposed to make things better, not limit them. People come to rely on these tools and services you provide and then find that they don't have them any more. I could go on forever, but examples can be seen in the search tools, removal of HD-DVDs (why not just lower the cost if you need more interest), with email support (with is now gone), with the time you used to wait to claim movies as lost before you would send the next movie in the queue, and I can go on and on. All of these things have been changed for the worst and this new search tool is no different. Please, bring back some of these tools that enhance our online experience. Some of these are such no-brainers that I can't imagine who is driving the bus on these decisions. He/She should be shot!! Meanwhile, I'm pulling my hair out here wondering what will be done next to make my online experience worse...

  126. Netflix, I didn't want to be just a source of complaining on here. But, I wanted to say how much I enjoy the streaming movies you offer and how appreciative I am with the service in general. There's always something to complain about, but you generally do a great job! Thank you! Please fix the search to allow General Public Ratings to be viewed again when you mouse-over a movie.

I always feel that there should be a personal favorite place where I should be able to store movies which I like the most. This may not be very important for all viewers but as a technical man, I think this should not be a big problem to develop too.

For example, under new releases, have a list of dvd's that have been released for that week, i.e. new releases for the week of Dec. 21, new releases for the week of Dec. 28, etc. And for each week separate the new releases by genre. I think it would be very helpful for users.

  133. I had so much trouble with my Roku that after many many hours of phone calls to them they finally sent me another one to try (after asking for a manager and insisting I don't get charged!) which worked but not until after another 3 calls (due to the changes they had me make with the previous Roku), 2 of which I got "disconnected" from. I finally got a person who I could understand and they could understand me. She was terrific, but 5 out of 6 previous customer service rep's seemed to get annoyed with ME because I had difficulty understanding their broken English. Obviously Netflix is outsourcing their work instead of giving those in the US that need a job the opportunity. Funny thing is they then sent me a customer satisfaction survey to fill out right before Christmas. Went on the fill it out today and the time had expired. Imagine that, they don't want to know what I thought of their customre service afterall. Therefore, I have resorted to my first ever blog. Netflix customer service rating "D"

  137. Well, we bought ourselves an Insignia Blu-ray player for Christmas, for just $120 at Best Buy. We love the Netflix Instant feature on it, use it all the time. We love it. I can see how this is the future as long as the quality improves to Blu ray and all titles are available.

On the other hand, I agree with others that Netflix really has no interest in the Friends site anymore, and I ear this blog is probably on the way out as well as it takes to investigation to find either.

I don't understand why you simply can;t have a "community" page with all this stuff on it. Perhaps you do not want negative feedback so public? Why not, its not like you have any real competition out there.

  139. I've noticed something interesting and sinister.

I use the Netflix site once a day and within the last month I've started getting the following message:

"We're sorry, some parts of the Community features are temporarily unavailable."

I get it -all- the time. Different times of day, with different links.

I am starting to suspect there is a secret 'timer' on the Netflix site that starts punishing people for floating around too long. If there is such a limit you should be upfront with your users.

It's that or you are further trying to peel users away from their beloved Friends section. Why?

    ReplyDelete
  140. Not sure if this is the most efficient means of communicating to administrative Netflix staff... but, I have only been receiving 2 DVD's at a time...rather than 3, which I am paying for. Just wanted to let you know. I currently do not have any DVD's in my possession from Netflix.

I'm not sure what info. you may need from me at this site. I'm hoping this blog will resolve this issue.

The fact that 4 Blockbuster stores in my area are closing proves that!

  142. I wish there was a way to block movies from displaying as options. There are a lot of titles (and box covers) out there that we'd prefer not to see. Just an option to hide this film (on xBox and through the website) would be great and then have a page on the website that lists blocked films in case you accidentally blocked something and want to unblock it.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Please stop hiding friends - not to mention that right now it doesn't function at all - it says I have 0 friends. This is my favorite feature and I have recommended netflix to friends and family because of it!

    ReplyDelete
  144. I am very disappointed with your community feature. Not only is it my favorite part of Netflix, but it is also the only thing separating you from your competitors. If you don't realize already that social networking is an essential part of the internet that is not going away, then you are running yourself out of business. I have recommended so many people to netflix, and they are always really surprised and interested in the community feature. If you continue to lessen the availability of this feature there will be no reason for me to pay $17 for netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I understand that the friend feature is at the bottom of your priorities because not very many people use the feature. Well perhaps this is because you make it so inaccessible. So many people I've talked to don't even realize that netflix has this feature. Not only is it unbelievable difficult to add/find friends, impossible to navigate the page, the features only work about 50% of the time, but now you are banishing it to the part of the page that nobody even looks at. No wonder nobody uses it. Considering how important social networking is becoming these days, I think it's about time Netflix gets their butt in gear.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Friends feature has been down for several days. I don't imagine you are preventing use as a way to say "no one uses it" so you can remove it. Some of these comments suggest that is your motive. I do suggest that you consider it a low priority to maintain, and I ask that you consider how many of us use Friends and Faves to drive rentals, and keep distribution local. I thought that was your goal in inventing the Friends network in the first place.

Well, you guessed wrong - I'm willing to bet more people are on Netflix during the holiday downtime than usual. 152. I have had troubles over the last week or two in seeing any of the Friends features.

Yesterday, the 29th, I finally telephoned Netflix and spoke with "Chris" in their Oregon Call Center. He assured me that the Friends feature(s) of Netflix are not going away. Netflix is going through a process of trying to "simplify" the features. Apparently, their feedback showed that it was too difficult for many of their customers.

Currently, for me, the Friends, and Community features are still not up, although they periodically will work for a few minutes.

Anyways, the good news is the Friends features are not going away, but going through a transition period.

There are so many companies lacking even basic customer service skills and I have to say your customer service - even before I know there is a problem (and that makes me having to call someone totally unnecessary) is wonderful! You make me feel like you actually appreciate my business, and that makes me want to continue to subscribe, even though we are looking for areas to tighten our budget. Netflix could teach a lot of other companies about how to treat its customers!

  158. I'm very disappointed in the changes regarding the friends section. With link at the bottom I thought it was gone completely at first.

Making top ten lists and reading others' lists is one of my favorite things about Netfix. Now there's no "add to top 10 list" link for the movies and you can't see what lists the movies are on.

So now the only way to add a movie to your top ten list is to go to the list an type it into that search box which is problematic. It used to be hard to distinguish between movies with the same name. They have fixed that however by making it so you can see the year of the film now before you add it to your list. However the movies only come up after you put type in three letters. Today I realized there is no possible way to add the movie "Up" to a top ten list.

    Great work netflix.

I've had some movies in my queue since they were in the theatre, and now that they're out on DVD I expected to get them fairly quickly, now it shows "Very Long Wait." Consequently, I bought the movies elsewhere, so now I'm contemplating how much I still need Netflix.

We have a high bandwidth and I checked the throughput speed (it is good) but 2 of the 3 movies we tried to watch today had the audio so out of sync with the picture we couldn't watch them. If this is fixed we'll stay - otherwise we'll be moving to another service.

  164. Add my vote to the many comments asking for the ability to delete watching history from the Instant Viewing list. We should be able to control that history and it just makes sense that we have the ability to clean it up as it will grow quite sizable as Instant becomes more popular. I purchased an Insignia Blu-Ray with Netflix capability before Christmas thinking that instant viewing wouldn't be something I'd use much and it probably wouldn't work well anyway. Wrong on both counts. It's great! But give us the ability to delete what we don't want anymore. Thanks.

  165. Netflix would save money on shipping costs by offering more content available for streaming, especially for new releases, & cable shows. It's quite obvious that digital download/streaming is the future of home entertainment.
& Netflix should purchase BlockBuster. That would destroy the competition.

  166. Can someone update the dvd's releasing this week on the BLOG? I hate the personalized one that presents itself on the front page. I want to see ALL the items that have been released for that week as per the old way listed within the blog.

  167. Can someone update the dvd's releasing this week area on the BLOG?? IT is still showing them as of like mid december or something. Don't tell me to go look at the personalized area. I hate that area. I want to see everything released from every arena and not just what the computer wants me to see or what not.

  168. I wish there was a way to provide feedback to Netflix generally. I sometimes have issues which I'd like to report that don't fit in with the automated "Report Problem" system, and that I don't want to wait on hold for several minutes. How can Netflix pretend to provide good customer service when they make it so hard to contact them about anything?

  169. I just picked up a LG BD370, and the Netflix HD streaming looks pretty good. But I am getting annoyed trying to find movies on the website. There is no "HD" indicator like when shown in the queue on the LG player.

I see there is an HD genre to browse, but then you can't sort by sub-genre like comedy, documentary, etc.

  172. As I'm sure has been mentioned above, I only see a Watch instantly tab and not Browse Queues - with no obvious way to get to Friends home.

Also, why can't my wife's profile be set up to add to our instant queue? She has her own DVD queue, but doesn't get the watch instantly options that I have.

  173. Netflix really needs to port to Linux ... so then I'd have a reason to actually sign up.

  178. How about you start HD-Streaming through the website? No I don't have a xbox or ps3, I've just been a loyal customer since 2001.

    Thanks

  179. I'm not sure this is the right place for this, but I would like to request more instant viewing for groups though X-box of Mystery Science Theater 3000 movies. My family is spread across the country and these are great ways to get together "at the movies". They not only do not discourage, but actually encourage talking through them. Great fun!

  180. Hey why isn't watching Netflix through Vista Windows Media Center not supported anymore???? Can you please update your FAQ's about this issue? I called technical support and they said it's not going to be available anymore?

  181. Temporarily Unavailable
Add this to the latest infringement on the "community" features of the site. All my "friends" data is inaccessible to me, but only "temporarily. Doesn't Neflix realize that community powered social software is one of the most powerful forms of internet applications today?

"We're sorry, some parts of the Community features are temporarily unavailable.

We apologize for any inconvenience. If you've previously added Friends or Fans, don't worry — we've saved all of your information for you and it will be back in no time. In the meantime, please enjoy the rest of the site."

  182. All the changes don't do you a lot of good if you can't supply the service - this is the third time in our last three attempts that we have not been able to get a video to start running or it crashes out halfway through. You're lucky I have an understanding wife, but I but you've already lost a chunk of potential regular customers who have concluded this is just another half-baked flaky technology.Well, off to post my experiences and net logs on some of my more reputable tech sites (where your engineers, if you have any, post) to see if anyone of them would like to own up about the malformed packets, dropped connections, and poorly written netcode that backs up this "service"

  183. Howdy,

Since the Netflix contact page isn't letting me be more specific, I figured I'll throw a comment here.

Lady Vengeance is cutting off the bottom half of its subtitles, making it hard for us English speakers to follow it.

Changing the display setting on my Roku box makes the problems worse.

    Thanks

  184. Very upsetting and unfortunate that I have to wait nearly a month to watch The Hangover and District 9 on Blu ray. And I get to pay extra for the 'privilege' of being able to rent BRs!

What a joke this whole thing has become. This temporary Blu Ray fad can't end soon enough for me.

  185. Since I CAN'T talk on the phone and you have it IMPOSSIBLE to communicate by email I will tell you that you have my INSTANT PLAY ACTIVITY as a LIE because we can't watch PLAY NOW on our computers or the 2 NETFLIX PLAYERS that we've purchased the last being today and it was NOT CHEAP and our broadband connection is great and so are our computers. Line test, dsl test A THE BEST so what does that leave me with? A USELESS service that I need because I'm housebound and TV is about all that I have and I PAY for this for what? The 3 movies MAYBE that show up after a week and a half at a time on the UNLIMITED plan?
I'm very upset this is NOT good service

  187. I would like to make a suggestion for improving the cue. When something is added to the cue I would like to know who in my family made the suggestion. For example, there are 5 people in my family who can access the cue. I would like it if each person on the account had a profile with unique suggestions and also when they make a suggestion it could be labeled as coming from that person. It would sure resolve some 'fairness' disputes around the house.

  188. I am very glad to see you guys embracing the watch instantly more lately, I just wish there was a better selection in the Anime & Animation section. I am a big anime fan and am very disappointed by the selection.

  189. I'd like to say that the Friends feature is very important to me, and I can't believe you are phasing it out like this. Apparently I am also using a "beta" version of the site, and I don't even get friends ratings on my DVD page anymore. This is ridiculous. Friends ratings are the most important part of the entire site to me.

  190. Hey Netflix, I love you.

But bring back the Friends Tab. What's the deal?? The hidden link at the bottom just aint gonna cut it. We want our Friends Tab back!

We dont have TV or cable so we are either watching streaming movies or DVDs courtesy you. Thanks.

I agree some titles show a "very long wait" but those seem to be delivered on regular schedule go figure.

  191. I love the instant watch feature. It's the main reason I joined, in fact; I wasn't interested in the service until you got streaming for Mac working. So of course I'd love to see your entire catalog available for streaming, but I understand that there's coding time and perhaps licensing issues involved that slow things down there. I have a few related suggestions/requests, though:

When searching DVD's or looking at suggested titles, it would be nice to be able to see if a title is 'coming soon' for streaming without adding it to my queue. My DVD queue would take ten years to get through at the rate I watch-and-mail-back discs, but my streaming queue turns over pretty fast -- so whether I add something often depends on whether I'll be able to watch it online in the next few months.

When something in the DVD queue becomes available for streaming, I'd love some kind of note or alert at the top of the DVD queue page, and an option to move the titles to streaming, removing them from the DVD queue.

A suggestion for both queues: I would like to be able to click on the heading of a column to sort the list by genre, star rating, etc. In fact, this feature is so common on the web that I keep forgetting Netflix doesn't have it, and I click on the column heading and wonder why nothing happened. ;p

Finally, my tiny-niche-market desires: could we pretty please have more educational content available for streaming? Few documentaries are available, and of those, most of them are the edgy political kind, not the informational kind. And as far as I can tell, zero 'homework help' content is streamable. I'd love to, for instance, learn Spanish, but I'm not going to blitz the course in a week so I can return the disc!

Thanks for a great service, and keep that streaming content coming.

  192. I cannot understand how two people can have Netflix accounts, live two houses apart in the same town, but one is able to recieve new arrivals or have a short wait but the other has "very long wait" for the very same movies. Of course the one who can't get the movies in a reasonable time has been a member longer and recieves 3 dvds at a time. HER SISTER, the other member, recieves 4 movies and is a relatively new member. BTW, there is no reason to call customer service because they haven't got a clue and will make up some bull----that wouldn't satisfy even the dumbest around!! I'm really tired of this and ready to cancel and watch the new arrivals from my sister's short list:)
