Netflix coming to PS3
Greg Peters, VP of product development at Netflix, here. We’ve got good news for PS3 owners! Soon you will be able to instantly watch movies and TV episodes on your TV via your PS3. Today we announced that the PS3 is about to join the ever growing list of Netflix ready devices that allow streaming of movies and TV episodes whenever you want, as much as you want, all included in your unlimited Netflix subscription. The PS3 is a terrific Blu-ray and gaming platform that will get even better in November when we start streaming thousands of movies and TV episodes!

So how long until the instant queue works with profiles? I'm looking forward to being able to watch on my PS3, but it's really going to be clumsy if my wife and I can't keep track of what we want to watch the same way that we do for DVDs.
Soo... what about the rumors of Wii support? I mean, the Wii -is- in more households than either the PS3 or 360. Any chance we're going to get Wii Netflix support at any point in the near future?
(Yes, we remember the surveys from earlier this year)
This is an excellent move. I've been watching Netflix on my 360 for a while and now I'll also be able to use my PS3.
Will the software ever be completely integrated into the PS3? Part of the reason the program is so great on the 360 is because I can be completely lazy and I don't have to worry about switching discs. Not like it's a pain, but it'd be awesome to just go in there and download something to show up in the "movies" section of the xmb.
is this also the same time when Netflix will be able to stream their entire movie/tv collection???
"HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!" this is great ,I can't wait !
I'm curious on one thing. How come there has to be a special disc to activate Netflix on the PS3? That seems like it'll cost someone (Netflix?) a lot of money to do when compared to no discs on other systems.
But at any rate, I think this is a good thing. Now I'll be able to watch Netflix on whichever console I happen to be using at the time. ^_^
Oh Come On.. Just after I purchased Playon and upgraded my wireless network to watch netflix in my PS3..
Ah nice, another great Netflix service we can't use in Europe...
any chance this is coming to europe too or are we screwed over once more?
Nobody gives a flying ... about the PS3. We want support for Ubuntu. Listen to your potential customers already. This is exactly why I don't rent from Netflix any more.
^^^^ I give a flying ...
Wii want Netflix, too!
This is awesome news, I've been waiting a while for PS3 support. I was using PlayOn (or trying to), but its support of NetFlix is choppy at best. It will be nice to have a stable connection to NetFlix on my PS3, which I use as the primary media client for my living room. Thanks guys!
was waiting for this. Now is there a list of what netflix streams listed online somewhere?
Thanks
So I wait, and wait, and wait; I finally give up and spend 100$ on a Roku player last month and then find this out.
thanks, i think.
Woo hoo! We bought a Roku box in 2008 but it will be much more convenient to have everything on our PS3. Thank you!
So when later this year will it be available?
This is awesome!
I bet if everyone keeps patient, more and more platforms will start to see Netflix integration. It's only getting better!
Thanks Netflix - can't wait to see where you end up next.
Wii please.
Freebase.
Netflix account just reactivated. I stopped paying for Live Gold because all I used it for was Netflix, this is fantastic news, cannot wait.
What exciting news!
Looks like I won't need to renew my XBox Live membership for another year, just so I can watch Netflix.
Since it's a separate disc, hopefully we can reasonably assume that it will start off somewhat flashy. The initial version on the XBox was nice, but... lacked a lot of features (which they fixed in a recent patch: new titles, listings of various categories, etc).
I'm also surprised at the quick announcement/release date turnaround. And the freeness of it. Well done!
I think this is great news, but Netflix is going to have to make a few changes before they get me for good.
I've had an account linked to my xbox 360 on and off for a while now, and I've never kept it going for 3 reasons:
1. No way to manage queue through xbox 360 interface
If you can fix this one problem, you'll probably get me back for good, whether it be via Xbox 360 or PS3.
2. Same content offered through streaming as DVD
This would be ideal - occasionally I'll find something I REALLY want to watch, but most stuff is just "yeah, I kinda wanted to see that" in your instant streaming catalog. I understand it takes time to encode these things, and I can wait a week or two for new releases. Hell, I might even pay a premium for parallel streaming content contingent upon my next point:
3. "Streaming only" subscriptions
I have no interest in renting DVDs. (or blu-rays, for that matter) What I want out of Netflix streaming is streaming and streaming only. I would pay $5-7/mo for streaming only access without the need of sending a single disc out to me.
Netflix, if you can get these things right, I'm sure you'll secure more memberships than you know what to do with. I know my gripes are not exclusive to myself. Every Xbox 360 (and now PS3) owner I know has these very same gripes. Hopefully you're hard at work on these.
Thank you very much! I will join back to netflix!!! (left 7 months ago because of lack of PS3 support)
If one currently has streaming capability on a DVD player say in bedroom, and Ps3 in living room-would it be possible to use both devices on one account??

Yes, you can use the one account for multiple streaming devices.

2. Same content offered through streaming as DVD
Don't count on the studios/distributors EVER allowing this. By doing so, they would cut out one of their main revenue streams (DVD sales/rentals).
There is a chronological distribution stream (theater, then DVD, then PPV, then cable, etc) that the studios will almost always adhere to. Bypassing one means cutting off a major revenue means.
Agreed with the dude who mentioned Ubuntu. When is support for Linux coming? There is a growing pool of customers on Linux that would LOVE to be able to stream Netflix!
Yaaay! Been waiting for this for a while!
Is netflix now working on Saturday. Got message that my movies was received on Saturday and that I would be receiving another on Monday can anyone confirm or deny this. Why didn't they tell me because I send my movies back on Friday to get the new releases on Monday, now I am screw because I wanted the new Battlestar movie and now I can't get it because some bone head decides to change the rules while I wasn't looking. What the hay is going on. I can't stop crying I needed my Battlestar fix since it been off the air. People that I have talked to about this don't seem to understand my situation. Only a true Battlestar "FAN" would know where I am coming from. Please somebody tell me what is going on!!!!!!!! (me screaming!!!)
Will this be extended to the Sony latest generation of BR players too? Or is it only PS3.
Is netflix now working on Saturday.
Yes, all DCs are now shipping on Saturdays. Have been for several weeks.
I wanted the new Battlestar movie and now I can't get it because some bone head decides to change the rules while I wasn't looking.
Let me get this straight. You are complaining because NF increased their service to now ship on Saturdays? Amazing!
Grep Peters did not answer the question of whether all of the Netflix content will be available through PS3, as reported in the press, or just the currently available streaming content, as is available today through Roku, for example. Please clarify.
Wii want Netflix on Wii.
Great news! I've been hoping for this for a while. My instant queue never moves very fast because I don't like dedicating my whole computer screen to watching a movie for two hours when I'd prefer to multitask with e-mail, etc. This will get me watching more and more movies, and I love it!
Now the only thing you need to do is stop screwing over your blu-ray customers with those outrageous and unjustified fees. I switched to Blockbuster over that for most of the summer before I realized that even when they offered me a free month to try and keep me, their service was so bad that it still felt like a ripoff. Even know I'm strategically picking "blu-ray months" and "DVD months" with regard to my subscription plan, and it's annoying to have to do that.
Nobody cares about Europe, Linux or the Wii. Get a PS3 and stop crying
Is the instant streaming disc a one time install or is it required to be inserted each time you use the service?
I wont rent from Netflix until you get your HD streaming straight on PC, HTPC (which would be easier than the other platforms)
re: Tommy and Kyle, I have to imagine Sony's approval process for downloadable applications is as lousy as everyone says it is if they're doing the disc thing first. Something tells me that Netflix wouldn't go to the trouble of pressing and mailing all those extra Blu-rays unless it really was the fastest way to get the program working.
That said, I'm very glad that it's coming in any form! Not the most convenient one yet but it'' certainly work for me.
If netfix would ever come to the Wii could it stream HD??? I own the Wii I doubt it ,just standard (crap) viewing I guess.
I'd like to see this on Panasonic's VieraCast. It's the reason I reactivated my membership. *crosses fingers* =D
Thank you very very much!
Great I can't wait, its about time PS3 got some luv from you guys! I'll be the first to upgrade my account. How will we get the disc to stream? I wonder.
Netflix for Wii please!
I am dying to see out this works, I been holding off buying something to stream netflix, hoping they would use the ps3. Can not wait to see this!
Does this mean that Sony is going to allow netflix to stream movies from its library? My guess is no. Netflix you should have negotiated a big old bonus with microsoft for exclusivity and used it to leverage sony into allowing steaming of its products.
I'll take it. Thanks for listening.
I am looking forward to this. I bought my PS3 because at the time it was about the same price or cheaper than a Blu-Ray. It will be nice to compare it to my Apple TV for quality. And yes it would be wonderful if everyone's pet platform was Netflix friendly and no matter what you buy it will be cheaper and out of date 2 weeks after purchase. So be at peace and quit whining. Think how screwed up it would be if it was a windows thing
I've got more then 1 PS3, do I need more then 1 disc? I want to watch movies on both.

Now that Netflix and Sony have agreed to work together on the PS3, will that mean that Sony's Blu-Ray Disk Players will be upgraded to support Netflix streaming, too?
Please define "soon"
Netflix support on Sony Bravia was announce in July for 'fall' and no updates have been posted since as to when it will be available.
I am not sure what this means for the PS3. Personally, I am tempted to purchase a Roku box and stop waiting.
Hi.
I love your service.
Netflix needs to add more kids television and movies to stream over the PS3. They are old and tired.
Thank you.

The main article up top says November if you read it, how true is this is the real question.
GREAT!! What about the $100.00 I wasted on my ROKU box when you and your representatives LIED to me and stated that over 40,000 movies would be available? The movies that are there are so old and useless. GIVE ME A BREAK!! The new releases made available to Instant to TV are made in the 1960's and 70's. I want my $$$ I wasted on the ROKU back! The movies are horrible. I have a PS3 as well, and...THE MOPVIE SELECTION IS A JOKE!!!!!
I hope Blockbuster comes out with the capability to watch directly to my TV!! BYE BYE NETJOKE!
GREAT!!! DO I GET MY $$$ BACK FOR ROKU BOX??
Here's another novel idea. I have a Gamefly account as well. Is Netflix going to make games available for the PS3 too. I know one of the movie rental companies will do both someday, whoever does it 1st will clean up.
Thanks to this announcement I will now become a customer! have been waiting for netflix for PS3- now I can get it - am dumping my premium channels for Dish once I get netflix up and running on the PS3 -
Thanks Netflix!
dafeng
they will have an xmb update so the disc will not be needed in 2010.
Please please add half stars!!!

FANTASTIC! Was walking out the door to go to Fry's to buy a Ruko when I heard the news on CNN. I am anxious to see when and if HD content will be available via Netflix and PS3. With my new Verizon FIOS connection, I should have success downloading the content. Thank you very much and I wish Netflix and Sony the best of luck with this transition.
Thanks for making this arrangement.
I have a (non PS3) Sony Blu Ray player. Any chance that this disc will enable Netflix streaming to my Sony Blu Ray player??
(The BR player already uses an ethernet connection for updates and Blu Ray Live functions.)
I second the request for Panasonic Vieracast support.
Chaveiro, andando de carro Polícia Rodoviária Federal.
Great news! I bought a Roku box a few months back and that was getting passed around from room to room. Now with my PS3 getting instant streaming, Roku can move around a little less!
The quality of DVD's I'm receiving is going down hill. Out of the last 4 sent, 3 were bad. Spending any money on replacement DVDs or quality control???
I second the Wii support...in case anyone is listening.
Caloi.
Thanks a bunch! Been waiting for a long time and I was about to cancel. This even caused me to upgrade my account with you.
I think this is pretty neat, but it would be better if Netflix would have a lot more new releases available for streaming. 17,000 old movies and TV series is mediocre compared to the amount of DVDs they have available. I say it's not worth it for me to sign up for this service. I can watch old movies all day long now with the Dish service I have now. Talk to me again when you have new releases available for streaming.
Yes Wii please - I could care less about blue-ray quality... 480p is plenty good for movie watchin
I hate streaming movies and would rather you drop the $5 surcharge for blu ray movies!
I like to see Wii added too. Really just add support to the built in web browser is Opera and I can just use the internet at worst case.
Shana Dale, pedreiro.
When oh when is Netflix and/or Microsoft going to do something about that terrible Silverlight us pc users are forced to endure? For nearly a year now streaming to the pc has been ruined by the lack of v-sync and neither of them seem to give a crap.
All I want is to be able to watch the new 3D movies!!!!
anyone get the ps3 netflix disc yet?
JUST trying to get this known: Of our last 7 DVD's, 5 of them had issues. We stop the movie, take them out (the DVD's are in miserable condition). We wash them, micro-fiber dry, and suffer through to the end of the movies. We reported a few of these; wanted to s/w the 800 number which continually goes into a fast busy signal AFTER entering the 'code' and we are getting disappointed. I suggest we are NOT alone and a better quality control is created or you will begin to have very disgruntled folks who 'love your service'. Clubfisher
Cadeira elétrica, tiraram a vagina no sem terra guria de 10 anos.
I would also love to see Linux support!
Using Queue , I prioritize by the mood of my interest. ( Hmm . . feel like a concert or horror flick )
Being able to sort my queue by genre would make this quicker & much easier.
Hey, to everybody that's not sure about the whole Blu-Ray Disc activation. It's only temporary, 1st quarter next year it's coming to the PS3 X-cross Media Bar :D
More and more disks arrive damaged. Are you going to do anything about it? I think that I will quit if this does not change in one month or so.
Filipe Castro
I have a PC hooked to watch netflix instant - but I have a PS3 as well.
I heard that the quality of XBOX360 is somehow higher then a powerful PC because of Microsoft's stupidity.
Is this true? Would PS3 netflix instant give me higher quality then a powerful PC?
I like how there's an ad now for the 360 in my Netflix emails telling what's been shipped and received. Just what I need, an ad to buy the product meant to fix the problem caused by another product of the same company. That is... Did Microsoft Silverlight ruin streaming on your Microsoft PC? Just buy a Microsoft 360 and pay Microsoft $50 a year and watch movies on your TV.
Arroio, risquinho.
when will it come? has anyone got a disc yet
Since the PS3 has built-in DTS decoding, I hope that Netflix will start doing 24-bit DTS streaming. DTS 2.0 sounds great @ 512kbit/sec, and DTS 5.1 sound passable @ 768kbit/sec.
At the minimum it should at least meet/exceed the 256kbit/sec HE-AAC quality that the PSN video store currently offers.
Here's hoping that Pixel Aspect Ratios are in the process of getting fixed, as well. I do appreciate that 24fps is maintained for that kind of material; the PSN store's video has tons of noticeable judder due to forced 30fps encodes :(
Keep up the good work!
Yeah, what about the Wii? Also, why no "Nirvana: Live at Reading" available on Netflix?
Is it coming to PS3 like LOST: Season 5 is coming to streaming in September? Because if that is the time-line, that is a long time to wait, considering we're still waiting for LOST, and it's not November.
You can count on me to not renew my xbox360 subscription...cannot wait!!
When I log in I see an image of the PS3 disc in my Watch Instantly tab. and the words:
"
Now add movies to your instant Queue.
They'll appear automatically on your TV when you use your instant streaming disc."
I wonder if they are shipping now.
Also, why can't anyone be happy? They're finally bringing Netflix to the PS3 and now people are crying that it's not on the Wii.... Last I checked the Wii still doesn't run DVD's it'll be a miracle if they can figure out streaming movies.
Ships today, Receiving tomorrow!
I have a playstation and I was really excited about this until I saw you can rent games on blockbuster as well as movies. I wish netflix would switch like that because I love the service and I would love to stay on netflix, but to think if I add two dollars more I can get games. I'm saying buy buy to netflix. I love the service but the games offer is just way too tempting!
Awesome!!! Have been looking forward to PS-3 streaming. I just bought a Roku player last month, but will just move it to another tv in the house. Keep up the good work. Could you give us an option for our account to be streaming only at a lesser charge? That would avoid Netflix having to pay postage and lost, damaged discs, etc. What do you think?
You need to add the search function to the PS3 with a virtual keyboard through the remote or I can use my PS3 keyboard
Greg, What's the story on Sony's Bravia XBR HD TVs having the Netflix logo as part of their Internet portfolio of services (i.e., on the TV), but it doesn't work? The text with the logo even says, "Coming in November," but the best I can tell by checking with Netflix and Sony's customer service is that this functionality *MAY* be ready by the end of the year. We bought a Bravia mostly for Netflix. Otherwise, we'd have purchased another LG.
Wii, please?!?!?!
My Sony TV says Netflix is coming in November. It's already Nov 7th, when will it be released?
do we get this on the european store also?
Just got my PS3 Netflix disk (yesterday) and it works pretty good. The interface is a bit slow and clunky, but the streaming quality seems very good!
I also want to add that I desperately want Netflix streaming support in Ubuntu Linux. This would make me (and many many other people) very happy Netflix customers!
Since the Netflix website won't work in Europe, where I will live for about 2 more years, will it still work on the PS3 even though it is not in the U.S.?
I received my PS3 disc yesterday and it doesn't work here in Puerto Rico. Why do you ship it to us if it is not allowed to be used here? Are we less of a costumer? I'm paying for the 3 disc plan with blue ray included?
Why hasn't my disc shipped yet?
+1 for getting this working on Linux pls. Just think of all the other platforms that would open up for Netflix (i.e. Android)
The disc in theory works. HOWEVER!! the picture and audio do not sync up. the aspect ratio is all off and the quality of the video sucks!!! But the disc does work. this system really needs to be fixed. NOT HAPPY AT ALL!!!
Just tried the PS3 disc this evening and I think it is slower to navigate the instant queue than on my Roku device. Also the video seemed to shift to low resolution on my PS3 after it started playing even though my PS3 is set to HD resolution.
On the plus side, I did see the ability to watch instant movies that were not already in my instant queue. Netflix, how come I can't do this on my Roku?
One other advantage of the Roku player is that it can output HD and standard definition resolutions at the same time where the PS3 cannot. I have the Roku connected to my HD projector and also distribute the standard resolution around the house with my video multiplexer. This way I can watch in HD on my projector in the family room while someone else is watching the same show on a standard definition tv in the kitchen.
Rob
Got my streaming disc today, logged into my Netflix account to activate with the code provided. The streaming is coming through as Dolby Digital 2 Ch., 48kHz, 128kbps, AVC with a max so far of 2.7gbps. I have a cable internet connection capable of 20mbps downloads. Watching 30 Rock the picture is very good with no stuttering and near HD quality, Checked a Disney show and the quality was not nearly as good. Looks to be the trans-code job done before transmission, I have PlayOn as well and this looks a little better with no stuttering unlike what I see in PlayOn. My Play On pc is a 3ghz Quad Core with 8gbs of RAM. So far so good. Need to play some more.
I am P.O.'d that the movies are not streaming in surround!
OK SERIOUSLY? Whats the point of making it on disk? we cant be online and check out messages and chat... thats really a set back.
i thought you guys would do better than that...
really for get the disk keep it id rather pay a one time fee off 30 bucks and watch netflix on ps3 and hulu and cbs and tnt and more chanels by getting play-on how can they get online streaming but we get a damn disc? the other guy was right it does sign us off psn and we cant chat with friends.
I am happy that I can watch these movies on my PS3 but do you think you could add some movies that someone might actually want to watch? Most of the movies are old (not that there is anything wrong with that) and the new ones are movies that no one watched when they came out.
Will streaming be Blu-ray quality on the PS3?
