Concert, Screenings and Free Streaming … Oh, My! Celebrate a Cinematic Classic with Netflix

Catherine Fisher from the Netflix communications team here. It’s been 70 years since Dorothy clicked her heels together and reminded us that there’s no place like home. To help celebrate, Netflix is inviting all of America to instantly watch “The Wizard of Oz” for free online at www.netflix.com/wizardofoz for 24 hours beginning at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, October 3rd through 9:00 a.m. Eastern the following day. If you are a Netflix member and have a Netflix ready device you will be able to instantly watch the film in HD – watch out for the flying monkeys! This will be the first time that a movie of this stature will be streamed uninterrupted and for free over the Internet. You can RSVP to our event on Facebook to receive a reminder.

Netflix will also host a free, live concert and outdoor movie screening on Tuesday, September 29th, in New York City’s Central Park at Rumsey Playfield. The concert will feature songs from “The Wizard of Oz” performed by Jennifer Hudson, Julianne Hough and ?uestlove. Following the concert, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m., the movie will be shown on a giant inflatable screen.

For more information on the 70th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz” and how to take advantage of this special streaming offer, visit www.netflix.com/wizardofoz or www.facebook.com/netflix.

We hope you enjoy the movie on October 3rd and that we will see you in NYC for a great concert and screening!

I think that it's great that you're opening up the streaming experience to everyone instead of just members, but I wish that you would have done it just a little bit different. Instead of letting everyone in the world watch the Wizard of Oz, how much better would it be if all subscribers were given one free Watch Now movie that they could give to loved ones. This would A.) give you an email address that you could later follow up on B.) ensure that the movie was an even more attractive "ad" for streaming services by making sure the content was recommended by someone instead of them having to like just one movie and C.) would reinforce the benefits of membership by giving members a "free gift" that they could give away just by being part of the service. I've no doubt that your screening will be a successful experiment, but if you gave one free movie pass to all of your members, I'd be willing to bet you popcorn that you'd actually end up sharing Watch Now with a larger group of individuals.

If you're going to force people to install Silverlight to experience steaming... you're just giving people a reason not to join Netflix.

You know, I thought I would look into the $4.99 plan and underneath it I saw a Starz Play only plan. I did a search on google and found this.

http://surround.verizon.net/Shop/Entertainment/StarzPlay.aspx

$9.99 a month for non-Verizon internet people.

It uses Adobe and Media Player 11.

It's non-streaming... you download the movie right to your pc. And you can watch the movie as it's downloading. Just like how Netflix used to be.

I guess having to use Silverlight because of the studios and all the DRM is bullshit.

I like how Netflix was telling people that the reason Silverlight looks like shit is because their internet was too slow. And then Netflix reduced the Silverlight buffer from a measly 4 minutes, to a pitiful 60 seconds... like that would help. I was actually told that Silverlight looks like shit because my computer and internet are just too fast!

How about a blog about how Netflix is working on a solution for the poor Silverlight performance. I think there are a few people who would find this more interesting than what's new to watch, when they can't watch it because of Silverlight. Surely there's another , and better, video player out there that does both DRM and V-Sync. Unless, of course, Reed Hastings is making too much money from Microsoft to care what his stupid little customers think.

Have you noticed that if you watch the trailer, it's with Adobe. If Silverlight is so crazy good, why aren't they using it here? Maybe they don't want to scare away any potential customers.

How can I contact a real human Customer Service Representative from Netflix? It seems to me there is no way to do so. I need to clarify an issue with my account. There was a problem with the delivery address. Let me know please. Thanks a lot.

Get Roku and stop complaining about Silverlight.

I had no problems watching instant with it... and I still have not come across any problems when I watch on my laptop...

3yr as a member & overall very little to complain about =)

I shouldn't have to get a Roku to watch what I used to until Netflix and Microsoft teamed up to ruin it.

If you have no problem with all the tearing caused by Silverlight, then good for you, but that doesn't mean there isn't a problem.

Perhaps not everyone has the money to spend on a device that does exactly what their computer did until we were forced to downgrade to Silverlight. Saying "Just go buy a Roku" is no different than Microsft saying "just go buy a 360".

If a lot of people thought before they spoke... there would be a lot less stupid things said.

Just listing the phone number is pointless, as you need to put in a 6 digit code when you call, which you find by following the above steps.

When are we going to get Smooth Streaming? Silverlight 3 is here. Get to it, Chop, chop.

So..When in September is lost season 5 going to be available to stream?

Has anybody else tried the "Move Movie Player"? It's what the TV studios use to put their shows online. It works with both Windows and Mac and I gotta tell ya, it looks friggin' great. Way better than that heap of garbage Silverlight. I like to think a day will come when Netflix will actually care what their customers think. I mean, they used to... once.

It's great that of all the streaming sources on the web, the shittiest looking one, is the one people pay for. Thanks Netflix/Microsoft. You're truly a credit to piles of shit everywhere.

I've been a member for the last few years and recommended it, even buying gift certificates as presents. My boyfriend and I moved in together and thougth that it would be smart to have one account with 2 user profiles. So I cancelled my account and set up a profile under his. But now I can't use instant view. I can't even contact customer service, he has to do it. I understand if we can't both use instant view at the same time, but I don't see why I can't use it under my profile. I hate to say it but this has really soured my Netflix experience. I think I'm going to delete my profile and he can downgrade his membership if he still wants it. I know this isn't the appropriate place to post this, but I have no other option to do so on the regular website. Sorry Netflix, bye :(

Jeez, what a bunch of whiners. I think I saw maybe two comments about the actual topic. Don't like Netflix then drop your membership. Sorry about your problems but I truly love both the selection and the Watch Now experience. Silverlight or not. And no, I don't work for either Netflix or Microsoft.

Reed and Netflix:

Regarding NAD's request to offer the Wizard of Oz in closed captioning and Netflix's non response:

You blew it on this one. Yes, it is true that encoding a separate stream for this one film would put you in a delicate spot. You didn't want to encourage or confuse with an exception when you don't have CC ready for your instant viewing.

But so what, really? These folks asked you specifically for Wizard of Oz and you blew them off. That's some weak sauce. I realize you felt it was a lose-lose situation, but I think you chose wrong.

Let's face it. Hulu has CC on some of its programs and this is making Netflix look rather out of step. You made a contest to ask people to improve your ratings. So why not make a mini contest and ask someone to come up with a way to deliver CC over Silverlight?

I'm sure someone will very quickly figure out some counter-intuitive way to move a CC interface over your instant viewing. Maybe it won't be a permanent solution, but it will be a start.
