Xbox LIVE Update

Hi, Pedro Freitas here from Netflix product development.

Available today, you will be able to browse and add movies and TV episodes to your instant Queue directly from your Xbox 360. The new Xbox LIVE Update will take advantage of the Netflix recommended category lists of titles that can be watched instantly.

You can also bring your Xbox LIVE Party into Netflix and watch a movie or TV show together with up to seven friends. The improved presence will display what you and your friends are watching in the Friends channel.

In addition, playback has been improved to ensure a better experience when adapting to changing network conditions.

Enjoy the movies!

  2. No comment on Microsoft's claim that they have a contractual exclusive on Netflix WI? Why did you make such an anti-consumer deal, if true?

  3. Betrayed! Why no PS3 or Wii support?

  4. Any plans on moving this browsing functionality to the Roku ?

  5. BOOOOOOOO! Console exclusivity is effin lame. One step forward and two steps back for netflix. I guess that is what you get for having a micro$haft employee on your board.

  7. As implied above, how about a comment on the claim that Neflix WI is now an 360-exclusive among consoles?

  8. It would be wonderful to have this same ability using Netflix on my Tivo. Thank you for your consideration and keep up the great work!

  9. I love Netflix - I love it on the 360 and like the new update - but I'm having problems viewing episodic content / TV shows after the new update - is this a known issue or maybe just on my side?

    ReplyDelete
  10. As stated several times above, probably by the same person, this "Xbox exclusivity" bit is a lame move. Not just because I'm a PS3 owner, but because you're limiting the options of your PAYING customers to enjoy your service (of which I've been doing for a few years now). You've already started charging your customers more to receive Blu-Rays (which I'm sometimes surprised you offer given MS didn't push the format Sony did) instead of DVDs when available, and now you're locking them out from possibly watching the lower resolution, DVD-quality streams that could easily be played on hardware like the PS3 (much like when the service first debuted and it was only supported on Windows).

As a paying customer I find it a little unsettling that you (as a company) feel this is a good move. If there is another reason, say Sony's PSN movie store makes this option impossible because of licensing issues, maybe this should be mentioned in one of these "updates".

  11. When are you going to HD streaming to the rest of us on PC/Mac??? I've been with Netflix since October of 2002 and think it really sucks that most of us who don't have a 360 still do not have HD streaming.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Bleh. We own a PS3 and Wii. We won't be buying an Xbox for any reason. It's a pity you went this route. I'm interested to know what market studies Netflix did to decide to go with Microsoft? Or was this not about supporting your customers as much as getting money from Microsoft? *sigh*

  13. I was looking forward to the improvements to the Netflix application, and now that I've used it, I am disappointed.

On my system, I see a total of 897 titles across the different categories we can browse. Some of the titles in my instant queue show up in these categories, most do not.

The items listed under "New Releases - Television" for the most part don't appear in the Television category. Some do, but most do not.

Then there is no way to sort - a MAJOR flaw. I thought maybe we would see an option to sort by title with this release, but no luck.

This new UI is still majorly lacking. Better luck next time.

  14. Good job on fixing streaming, it's been a long time but now I can finally ditch the Ethernet in my living room for the 360 wireless adapter.

No stop and restarts so far while watching anything.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sucks that you don't support Wii or Playstation. If someone else did, I'd probably switch away from you. That, and your terrible caption support that is totally solvable WITHOUT waiting on Silverlight.

    ReplyDelete
  16. on my xbox 360 some movie genres are missing. Is this a feature I don't know about or are there only 5 genres to browse from?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Who cares?

I'd like to know why movie ratings aren't showing in profiles.

  18. Long time Netflix subscriber here, commenting HERE because there seems to be no other way to lodge a complaint or comment to Netflix other than calling them. So, here goes:

First off, how about a way to comment or lodge a complaint to Netflix. Maybe you could put it under the, I don't know, maybe the "Contact Us" section of the website?

Here's what I would point out if there were such a section. Maybe I'm a huge nerd, but I organize my queue in a certain way because I know how I watch things. For instance, there is no reason in hell I would want three discs of a sketch comedy show in my house at one time (who can watch more than 1 episode in a row? They get dull! But that's not the point). However, when I sent two DVDs back, suddenly I have two discs of a sketch comedy show coming. Why? Because the TV show I had queued up was mysteriously and suddenly a "Short wait." Okay, as I said, I'm a long time subscriber, I can handle a wait, but why doesn't Netflix give me the option of what to do when there's a sudden "Short wait" change like that? Automate an email that says, "Hey, there's a short wait on your disc, what would you like us to send next?" Put a time limit on it, so that the default after 4 hours (or whatever the postal service cut off for that day is) it automatically sends the next available on the queue.

I guess I'm just steamed because I'm going to have to send the friggin' State back because I don't need 9 hours of it in my house, and who knows if the mysterious "Short wait" shows up again, for the THIRD time. Sigh.

  19. Playstation 3 !!!!!!!!!! damn it netflix u sux!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. A plus and a minus. I think that Netflix should open up at least for the Wii. Sorry PS3 folks, not all of us can afford a $500 platform especially when it's inferior to XBOX and Wii....sorry. I will admit, I bought the 360 initially for adding functionality to my Netflix subscription. 80% of my 360 usage is Netflix, if not more.
I wanted to add that I love the update, now when signal disruptions occure, there is not reload wait time. I also like being able to look for new movies without having to jump on my pc and add them to my list.
I think Netflix is doing a great job with the streaming and cant wait for when most movies will be available to watch. Just help the other platformers so there will be a little less boohooing!!
    VIVA LA 1st AMENDMENT!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. This update, while not ground-shattering, sure is a helpful addition. I particularly like the "New to instant watch" section. Granted, it'd be more useful if I didn't keep such a keen eye on instantwatcher.com/streamingsoon.com,but it's still nice to have.

The improvements in internet slowing is immensely handy, though I can't say I've had much chance to see it in action!

Keep up the good work! Even if there's a lot of people wanting more, I'm sure there's many of us happy for the efforts!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Loving the update! Thanks so much for your hard work!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Playstation 3 support!!!! Netflix please work on that!!!!!!!
    Make it happen please!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. All Microsoft products suck. They are poorly built and not worthy of such a good product as "Watch Instantly" feature from Netflix. So why on God's green earth are they only offering the service on that hunk of junk the XBox? I almost feel like closing my account with Netflix because of this stupidity.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Do you think that if a bunch of us got together for a class action lawsuit over the fees that we pay for Netflix service. I mean, we pay the same amount as the people with XBox's and yet we do not get the same service. I would think that if we pay for a service that we cannot use because it's not available to us then we would be entitled to a refund or a discounted price?

    Your dumb shut up!

    PS3! loves Netflix!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I dig the update, but the Anime/Animation category isn't there. Was there a business reason for this?

    ReplyDelete
  28. To all of those crying about Netflix not being on PS3, shut ya yaps and buy a xbox and spare us the High School whining. Oh and "console exclusivity" isn't "effin lame" it rocks. Besides, PS3'ers have a Blu-ray player, which I think is more uber than Netflix capabilities... my poor ass can't afford a PS3.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This SUCKS. If it is true, I am VERY disappointed with Netflix. I have a PS/3, it can play BlueRay, XBox can't. I watch more movies than play games on my PS/3. I pay extra to rent BlueRay from Netflix. Would be nice if I could also get that streaming right to my PS/3 for that extra money too.

I agree with everyone else here, this is a BAD move for Netflix. I wonder what the BlueRay rates are for Blockbuster?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I watch the movies on my xbox as well as anyone else but I also have a question. When the connection gets low it doesn't wait to process the movie it skips. I don't know how everyone else feels about this but I would rather wait to see the whole movie besides clips of it.I"m not trying to be an a**hole but I"m missing some of the parts in the movie.

    Thanks,

    Flixer

    ReplyDelete
  31. i think its a good move. its good competition for the other systems. its a disadvantage fot xbox not playing bluray but yeat there still are so many people that dont have bluray. going ahead with the instant streaming with netflix is a great idea. plus watching a movie with your friends is one of there greatins ideas. and just face it the wii and the PS3 will become obsolete once project natal is released.

  35. You people are seriously a bunch of dumbasses. XBox LIVE is the only network that is consistently stable. Yes, Microsoft and Netflix are in bed with each other having a member on the board. Perhaps if PS3 and Wii shape up and get themselves a stable network... then it can become a reality.

I've seen the difference in streaming already. Was watching an episode on my 360 and instead of stopping, caching for a minute, and then playing... it paused, then cached for a second... almost instantaneously. Very nice.

I enjoy hearing all of the complaints from Wii and PS3 owners because while the systems are better, the network is inferior and they just can't grasp that concept. If you want to complain, complain to the people that run their networks and start getting their shit together... then maybe something can happen. Until then... keep pissing against the wind.

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is great considering I have a separate profile than my husband and don't have my own instant queue. Still makes my browsing online a pain in the butt -- I have to keep switching to my husband's profile to find out which movies are available instantly and move those from my queue to his instant queue! What a pain!

    ReplyDelete
  37. "XBox LIVE is the only network that is consistently stable."

You are greatly misinformed. PS3 doesn't need to login to the network to access Netflix - it can login directly. It's actually worse on the 360, because without LIVE running, you can't access ANYTHING. PS3 can continue to operate online in Netflix (if it's designed as such) without needing a login. So, your statement is absolute nonsense.

As for "seeing the difference in streaming already"... obviously you weren't comparing apples-apples, since PS3 doesn't have Netflix streaming... so again, your statement is nonsense.

Try understanding the systems before blabbering lies about them.

  40. I love watching Netflix on the Xbox 360. The new enhancements are good. I think I am watching more flixs then playing games. Keep up the good work and bring us more anime and crazy Asian cinema!

  41. Love the new functionality, great work! I have noticed that today for whatever reason a couple of the genres aren't being listed even though they were listed yesterday. Specifically the HORROR genre isn't being shown.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Not good for people with children who use it. The New movies list is full of R rated movies that they can just click on and watch.

I know you can go to Netflix and change you preferences to PG-13, but that also cuts out older movies, music videos, sports videos, etc...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love the update, except for one problem I'm having:

  49. I sort of get the feeling that this is and was the ultimate goal for Netflix/Microsoft. First Microsoft lures Reed Hastings on to their board. They pay him a shit load of money to "upgrade" to that piece of shit Silverlight. Lastly they focus all their attention on the 360.
"Oh", they say, "did Silverlight ruin instant viewing on your pc? Just go buy a Microsoft Xbox and pay Microsoft $50 a year for Xbox Live and watch movies on your TV."
If Netflix and Microsoft are the ones in bed together... why do I feel like I'm the one getting fucked?

  50. "As for "seeing the difference in streaming already"... obviously you weren't comparing apples-apples, since PS3 doesn't have Netflix streaming... so again, your statement is nonsense."

New paragraph, new argument... dipshit. This was strictly about the streaming quality over LIVE after the update. This had nothing to do with you dipshits whining about having a PS3.

I enjoy hearing all you teary-eyed PS3 and Wii owners. Boo hoo. Meanwhile I'm enjoying HD quality streaming on my 360, laughing at all you dipshits that didn't see this coming. I'm laughing all the way to the bank.

As for the $50 for a year of LIVE... that's just over $4/month. I'll gladly pay that for the LIVE network. I'm beginning to think that all of you are crying because you're more anti-Microsoft than you are pro-PS3 or pro-Wii. That's your own decision, live with it.

I hope Netflix never streams to PS3 or Wii. I'll have many more years to laugh, then.

It be nice to get them sooner and since the company supply over billions of people you think they have plenty. If you look at my record of the 1st year Ive had over 100 movies, 2nd year was 57 and this year Im lucky if I get 40. So the results showing it taking longer every year to get the movies I request. 63. An anonoymous post complianed, "I'm having problems viewing episodic content / TV shows after the new update". I'm having the same problem, anyone else? After returning to the Xbox dashboard, the user interface issue is corrected.

  77. Are you going to fix the wide selection of movies on Netflix which have the wrong aspect ratio or a bad frame rate? For example, this is badly stretched:

    http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/Chrysalis/70113483

and this is like 10 fps:

    http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/Shuttle/70114576

I tried to report the second one as broken but the "report problem" page doesn't even have a text field, just a bunch of irrelevant check boxes. I'm getting really tired of playing "Netflix roulette" every time I sit down to watch a movie.

Thanks anyway! Watch instantly is still a good deal, even with the broken movies.

  90. So I've decided that neither Netflix or Microsoft has any intention of ever fixing that shitty Silverlight and here's why. If they ruin instant streaming on the pc, even though we're paying for it, they hope that either 1. you'll increase you're dvd's out at a time plan, meaning more money for Netflix, or 2. you'll run out and buy a Microsoft 360, meaning more money for Microsoft. These are scumbag tactics that leave us pc people, in a word... fucked.

  91. You know what's interesting? If you watch Yahoo videos on Yahoos homepage, with Adobe 10, full screen... There's absolutely NO TEARING like you get with that shitty Silverlight. And to think... that piece of crap is Microsoft's flagship player.

  92. I like how Netflix was telling people that the reason Silverlight looks like shit is because their internet was too slow. I tried instant play to my computer that I attached to my 1080P HDTV with a simple RGB cord. THE SERVICE WORKED GREAT!!! The quality was better than my CATV and I could watch in widescreen. What a great service! I wish I could use NETFLIX for all my TV viewing.

I dont want to talk to people when watching a movie thats pointless, it would be great way to promote netflix if i could just watch a movie with friends who dont have netflix same as i would if they came over and watched one in person.

  104. As a parent, I was pleased that originally I was able to put items acceptable to the ages of my children on my Instant Queue to be accessible on the XBOX and to keep others on my list on the computer. NOW - I am in horror! 9 1/2 weeks and other inappropriate films for young children to view are offered to them on my XBOX without my consent!!!! I spent some time trying to find a block or edit to this new feature and haven't found it as yet!!! Anyone know of a solution to this, short of disconnecting Netflix from out XBox?

Why punish those who can't afford to go buy a new computer. Yeah. That's what the jack-off "customer service" told me to do to "fix" the problem. ::laughs::

  112. Posting here because like another poster pointed out, there is nowhere else to complain without picking up a phone, and that hasn't helped yet.

That is the first thing I would like, an email address that the same people that you pay to answer the phones could respond to.

Secondly, recommendations for me is busted. I get nothing at all. I have rated over 600 titles, have watched hundreds of discs, and filled out every single line of your redonckulous movie survey. All I get now is a blank box and a suggestion that I rate more movies.

Third, what happened to the anime & animation categories? If you go to, for example, the anime series category you get four pages of results in gallery view. So by a rough guess you are showing that you only have 200 or so titles in this section. But if you start searching by titles you find that there is a much wider selection of titles available. I work around this by going to amazon.com and using their database to look for movies I'd like to watch on netflix. Not very efficient, but it works. Makes me wonder what other sections are only showing a fraction of movies available. This is an issue that I called support about months ago and got no results.

Finally I would also like to see the mega-list of all movies available somewhere on this site. Maybe a third party could build a better application for finding movies (Do I smell another NetFlix prize?) And yes I just looked at the developers section to see if anyone was doing anything that wasn't for the iphone, not really.

I NEED TO GO TO THE PC TO SELECT WHAT I WANT TO WATCH ON MY XBOX SINCE ALL MY FAVORITES PROGRAMS ARE NOT LISTED UNLESS IS IN THE INSTANT QUEUE... I USE CAPITAL BECAUSE I'M PISS OFF.... THIS IS FUNNY... I NEED TO GO TO THE PC TO SEE WHAT I CAN SEE, THEN ADD TO INSTANT QUEUE THEN GO TO XBOX AND WATCH IT... LAME...

  114. Like your disgruntled member, I pretty unhappy with no email pipeline to NetFlix staff.

    I just received this notice:

Our records indicate that you have not been billed by Netflix for a Previously Viewed DVD purchase.

I've been a member since May 2005 and have been thoroughly pleased. No complaints. Today, though, when I received the notice above, I'm beginning to worry. It appears that someone (not I) made a DVD purchase and I'm expected to pay for it.

Please figure out what's up, someone, and get back to me.

This really makes me want to cancel my service, you couldn't be anymroe frustrating adding new features to the 360 before getting basic services on the ps3.

  123. Stop asking about Netflix on the PS3... it's isn't going to happen. At least not for quite a while. Netflix and Microsoft are in cahoots together. Microsoft has paid Reed Hastings (Netflix CEO) quite a bit of money to get him on their board of directors, I'm sure. Part of that deal, I'm also sure, was Netflix on the Xbox exclusively. "If you don't like it", they'll both tell you, "piss off."

  124. I'm wondering if there are any updates in the works for those of us who stream the movies to our Blu-Ray player (Samsung specifically for us). I would love to be able to search for movies on my TV and also, an easier/quicker way to search my instant queue on the TV would be great! Like, just line them up like they are on Netflix on the computer rather then making me go through one at a time. I have over 100 movies in my instant queue and it takes FOREVER to find what I'm looking for, whether a family movie, kids movie or something for mom and dad to watch at night. Just a thought....

  140. I have two complaints. The first is that there is no actual forum on your website to lodge an official complaint. I shouldn't have to post a complaint on a blog. There should be a link on your website for customer feedback.
The second, which was the initial reason that I got on here to lodge a complaint, is that you need to get more movies available to "watch instantly." It is a great feature, but one that is sadly underdeveloped. I must say that if you do not attempt to vastly improve the selection of movies that are available in the "watch instantly" section, I am going to have to cancel my account.
Also, if forced to cancel my account, I will also be inclined to start a Facebook group that will be aimed at boycotting your services until there is a better selection of movies, TV shows, and stand-up comedy bits in the watch instantly section. I shouldn't have to wait 3 days for you to mail Hot Rod to me before I can watch it.

  158. "Is anyone having the xbox-netflix issue where only your Instant Queue and Party shows? Sometimes, it lets me browse genres - but lately all I see is Instant Queue and Party."

I had this happen last night for a few hours. Tonight, it doesnt work at all, freezes on the main "Netflix" loading screen with the connect icon, sits there for hours and never goes to the main menu. What is the point of all this fancy streaming tech if it never works???

    ReplyDelete
  159. Also, since last night, one movie I was watching WILL NOT play audio now when I try to resume or restart it: Population 436. I watched 2/3 of this last night (when only the queue and party options were working) and now when I try to watch it again, no matter what I do (resume, restart, remove and requeue) it wont play with audio. This is such a slick service, but it DOESNT WORK and I cant see paying for the constant frustration and numerous bugs that interfere with the experience that SHOULD be. No response from netflix, I will probably have to rent the actual DVD now just to see how it ends.

Also the main menu finally came up after a 1/2 hour of the main "connecting" screen, but once again, it only has instant and party menu options working, all the rest are blank/empty.

    ReplyDelete
  160. This also requires paying for a subscription to Xbox Live. So you need two subscriptions. I don't have an XBox Live subscription now, and am not getting one just so that I can stream Netflix. This is lame.

We put it on our son's and now we can't get Netflix because he's under 18 years old. Nowhere on the XBOX or Netflix sites does it say you have to put it on an adult profile. What a profit-making scam! We are thoroughly disappointed with both Netflix and Xbox.
