Hi, Jessie Becker here, VP of Marketing, with a message for our members who have added Blu-ray access to their accounts. This message does not apply to you if you have not added Blu-ray access to your account.
The number of titles available for us to purchase on Blu-ray has increased significantly. Our Blu-ray selection has grown more than 60% in just 6 months to over 1,300 titles, and is continuing to expand quickly. Blu-ray adoption among our members has also grown – it’s now close to 10%. As we buy more, you are able to choose from a rapidly expanding selection of Blu-ray titles. And as you’ve probably heard, Blu-ray discs are substantially more expensive than standard definition DVDs – often as much as 30% more.
We’re committed to providing a high quality Blu-ray experience for our members who choose to add Blu-ray access, and in order to do that we need to adjust Blu-ray pricing. As a result, the monthly charge for Blu-ray access is increasing for most plans and will now vary by plan.
If you have added Blu-ray access to your account, this change will take effect on your next billing date on or after April 27, 2009. You will also receive an email from us letting you know the monthly charge for your plan. (Members who do not have Blu-ray access today and add it to their account in the future will see the new prices as of today.)
To avoid any confusion, here are the charges for each of the plans.

When they put the $1 fee in place, I dropped from the 3/mo plan to the 2/mo plan. When they added this new fee I dropped to the 1/mo plan, but it still irked me that they did this, so I cancelled my plan and switched to Blockbuster Online. They don't charge for Blu-ray.

I dropped the blueRay from my account immediately upon receiving notice of this increase. I tried without success to locate some way to provide feedback directly to Netflix but it appears they are so large and successful that listening to customers is not necessary. I have no problem going years without renting a movie so it will be their loss when my gift subscription is over.
very let down with the service.. takes forever to actually receive a new relaease. by the time i get it in the mail its almost over a month old.. switching to blockbuster....
The blu ray charge was enough for me to make the switch to block buster. Been with them a few weeks now and by comparison it has been great. I get my movies a lot faster than netflix because I can drop them off at the local store around the corner. And the monthly charge is lower, what Netflix used to charge before the rate increase. I expect as more and more people use blu ray there will be more and more people leaving Netflix and saving money.
What the HELL? It used to be FREE to rent Blu-Rays back when I first got my PS3. Now that Blu Ray players are cheaper and more widespread than ever before you decide to charge MORE for the format?!

I've switched to Blockbuster several months ago, but I've only recently had enough free time/been drunk enough to tell you what asshats you guys are for doing that.
I just got a blu-ray player so I thought I'd check my Queue to see what movies I could get in blu-ray. It turns out I can get ONE out of my TWENTY-TWO movies in Blu-ray.
I wouldn't pay ONE dollar extra for that and they want Four? No thanks I'm happy with my DVD's.
I was willing to pay the extra money if I could actually get a blu-ray disc (as opposed to all my movies showing as long wait and very long wait.) I still cannot get blu-ray discs. Yesterday I switched to Blockbuster where I can get a plan that works for me for the same price - including blu-rays. I'm disappointed in Netflix. The problem is that there is too little competition for Netflix which has led them to somehow falsely believe they are the God of movie rentals by mail.
I switched to blockbuster right before the price hike. Not only they are cheaper, return at local store makes it one day shorter to receive disc than netflix.
I canceled my netflix account after put it on hold since April and now I feel happy.

I was a long time Netflix customer who had to cancel about 6 months ago due to money issues. I just signed on today thinking I would re-activate my account.. After seeing this blog, I will not be joining netflix again, and instead will take my business elsewhere due to this ridiculus charge for blu-ray.
On Friday, I sent 2 Netflix DVDs back via postal mail. On Saturday I received notification that Netflix had received those 2 DVDs and that 2 replacements would be shipped out to arrive on Monday. This sounds to me like the Bluray price increase is also being used to pay for Saturday hours at the Netflix distribution centers. Don't know if I'm upset about this or not...
They've always shipped on Saturday or at least have done so for the past few years. It makes a big difference as far as I'm concerned in turn around.
Is anyone still paying attention at Netflix? Were you ever? More than 2 months after accepting this price hike for Blu-Ray discs, I'm still seeing that 3 of the movies in the top 5 on my queue are "Long Wait" or "Very Long Wait". I'm not sure what your commitment "to providing a high quality Blu-ray experience" means if it doesn't include getting wait times down. This is no better than it was before the price hike.
If you ask me you people are pissing and moaning over nothing. Blu-ray is nice. But its not a necessity. I mean can you see the screen when you play a dvd. Answer Yes. Can you follow the story on DVD. Answer Yes. Then what the hell is you problem.
Lets see... Netflix recently announced it had rented its one-billionth movie while at the same time upping fees to their customers for a movie format (blue ray) that will be commonplace in just a few more months. Now that's capitalism! And that's why I am not joining Netflix.
Give us a break, Jesse, we all know Blu-rays are more expensive when WE buy them.
But not when YOU buy them, because you don't pay a flat price, you pay the studios a percentage of the rental income derived from each disc.
OK, maybe the percentage is a bit higher on blu-rays, that I don't know, but the difference is a lot more like a dime than a dollar.
More to the point, as others have pointed out more politely, assessing the surcharge during those times when you don't, can't or won't ship any blu-ray discs is pure, unadulterated fraud.
For example, I just bought a blu-ray deck, added blu-ray to my Netflix account, and attempted to order a disc to try my new deck out with ... so far, 15 discs and counting, there's not one that returns anything other than "we'll ship it bye and bye with your pie in the sky when we feel like it" after I add it to the queue.
So the dishonest (on your part) truth is that a blu-ray disc may or may not appear in my mailbox sometime within the next month, but the extra $4 will most definitely show up on my bill.
Your turn, Jesse, I can't wait to hear how you rationalize this all away.
I have already noted that I thought the surcharge for Blu-ray disks is reasonable. I have read many anonymous posts from customers who seem to be having difficulty receiving Blu-ray disks from Netflix.
I just wanted to note that I have never had that experience. Although I have over 100 disks in my queue, many, of them Blu-ray, I always receive my next disk, regardless of format, the day after the Netflix center receives the disk that I have returned, even if the disk is a very new release. I consider that perfect service and I have no idea why all these folks seem to be having difficulty.
A few observations:
I have been boycotting netflix Since they day they announced this and HULU has done just fine for low quality video. And I found a local store that rents movies for a buck, much cheaper than Netflix and better selection.
Netflix does not even try to get new releases on Blu-Ray. Torchwood coh, madmen, etc are just dvd.
It was obvious they were doing this as soon as they raised it $1. It was a test to see if they could get away with it. I canceled my blurays immediately... almost my whole subscription. The only way they'll lower the price again is if the bulk of their customers drop it and they lose enough business.
I canceled Netflix and went to Blockbuster too. They don't charge extra for Blu-ray and you have the convenience of exchanging them in-store for double value.
It isn't about the money - it's about customer focus. Netflix chose to put themselves first and their customers second. Customers have a long memory and Netflix damaged their brand with this one.
Just noticed the $4 charge on my account (my wife pays this bill). I was defending netflix a friend, told him he was wrong, netflix doesnt charge extra for blu ray.
Woops. What a frikkin joke. $4 a month whether you use blu ray that month or not.
Absolutely ridiculous...The extra service is worth a dollar at most.
I'm going to blockbuster after 8 years.

Blu-ray = EPIC FAIL. Its either gonna get passed by as we move to hd streaming or it has to come down in price.

I'm planning to buy a BR player for the wife for Christmas, so I thought I'd look on the NetFlix site to see what BR titles they have available for us to rent as new customers. 100,000+ titles but only 1,300 in BR? C'mon man, that's a bit of a joke. And the monthly surcharge for access to a poorly stocked BR library with a lot of lousy titles is outright gouging, not to mention completely unrealistic in today's competitive by-mail rental market. Adding a modest PER-RENTAL charge of perhaps 20 cents for each BR disk rented would have made the most sense. Then, subtract a small amount from that fee - charge perhaps 15 cents instead of 20 - for BR rentals in queue that the customer has to wait more than a month to receive. That way customers don't feel like they're getting gouged with an exorbitant fee while they're waiting who knows how many months to receive a new release, which may be on HBO HD by the time they finally receive it. Cap the BR fee at perhaps $3.00, so after a customer rents 20 BR's in one billing cycle, the surcharge is waived for the remainder of that cycle, and subsequent BR rentals are mailed with no surcharge added. A capped per-rental fee structure would provide a bit of an incentive for a customer to rent more than 20 BR's per cycle. And by charging on a per-rental basis, if the customer doesn't rent any BR disks during a billing cycle, they don't pay any surcharges. And a cap means they'll never pay more than an additional $3.00 per billing cycle, regardless of how many BR's they rent. That's what most would call treating the customer FAIRLY. Work with your customers instead of gouging them monthly for BR's they may not even rent. That's the FAIR way of doing business. Why charge good customers with upper tier accounts a flat monthly fee for access to BR disks that they have to wait months to receive, and STILL charge them even if they DON'T rent ANY BR disks during a billing cycle? This makes NO SENSE whatsoever. This is a piss-poor way to treat good customers, and a fast way to alienate them. It takes months to establish a good relationship with a new customer, a fair and equitable price structure to maintain that relationship, but only a few billing cycles of charging lopsided surcharges to destroy that relationship forever. When one examines how your new BR surcharges work, it looks as though you're going to learn this lesson the hard way, at your own peril and expense. So be it.
I'm glad I read this blog. I considered NF FIRST for BR rentals through the mail 'cause I always thought NF was the bomb, but obviously they have exploded, and poorly veiled greed has become the watchword of their new business model. Thanks guys, but no thanks. Sorry Netflix, I'm going with Blockbuster instead. You guys just lost a potential customer. And I WILL WARN MY FRIENDS - the ones who will eventually look to NF for BR rentals through the mail - TO AVOID YOUR SITE. Our gain, your loss.

I was extremely disappointed in Netflix. I was a Netflix customer for 9 years and switched to Blockbuster once they started charging me an additional $5 for Blu-ray. No love for long time customers and like many said, Blu-Ray prices have been dropping substantially but yet to see a move by Netflix to drop the extra surcharge. At least Blockbuster also allows me 5 in store exchanges per month so I can get movies quicker, they send me free instore rental coupons every few months, and they are $1 cheaper than Netflix. You lost a long-time customer, Netflix, and you don't even care.
If Netflix is going to charge this much more for Blu-Ray then they need to make a huge improvement in availability of BR discs.
If Netflix can't answer the question of how many more BR discs they are going to add per title then I say leave them.
As a matter of fact, leave them anyhow. Show 'em that there are consequences to stupid decisions.
Everyone leave Netflix now. Join the cause and show your disapproval with your pocketbook.
Blockbuster is a good option.
