10 Million Netflix Members

Hello, Steve Swasey, VP of Corporate Communications, here. During the night of Feb. 11, 2009, Netflix hit another terrific milestone: 10 million subscribers. CEO Reed Hastings calls this, "A symbolic but meaningful achievement for our company."

Thanks to all of you for joining Netflix, whether it was a long time ago or just yesterday. We'll keep working to bring you the movies and TV episodes you're going to love with the best convenience, selection and value.

  2. I LOVE Netflix. The collection of titles is great and I am able to find almost all of the movies I want to see. However, the suggestion system is AWFUL. The movies that are suggested for me almost NEVER are of interest. I don't know how you derive those suggestions from my history of viewing. I remember hearing about a competition to come up with a new algorithm for deriving suggestions. It can't come soon enough.

  3. Me thinks the Xbox 360 has a lot to do with this.

The reason the $1 mill hasn't been given out yet, is because the NF model is pretty darn good.

The movies that are suggested for me almost NEVER are of interest.
Broaden your horizons of what you are interested in. The recommendation model might surprise you.

  5. Congratulations! That's a great milestone, and I'm glad to have been a customer as long as I have.

... so, do you have enough customers now to stop advertising NetFlix using pop-under ads, please?

  6. can netflix please buy gametap and ad it to the service at no extra cost like watch instanly but for games, and then do a game disc rental service like gamefly but umm with the netflix quality of service? block buster will be adding games to the total access plans, and netflix could do something like i said above and really have a major edge over blockbuster.

  7. Playstation 3 streaming.

    Please?

    Congrats on the milestone,

  8. 1) It would be great if Netflix entered the game rental business. With their superior distribution system they would give Gamefly a run for their money.
    2) Netflix has a nice collection of martial arts movies, but I noticed most of the best and/or most financially successful titles are missing from their lists. How about an update?

  9. When I had a free Netflix trial, the "watch instantly" system was in its infancy and was limited to a few hours. Thus, Blockbuster Online's trade-at-store system and intuitive website design won them my dollars. Almost two years later, I'm tired of juggling Blockbuster's envelopes and restocking fees so I went to the Netflix site to check you guys out again. Alas, there is nothing to convince me to drop my Blockbuster subscription. I cannot easily browse the instantly watchable titles. Instead, I get a list of 20 movies that I've no interest in watching, though claims of thousands of movies are made on the page. There's no easy way to see what I could instantly watch, and the site design is utterly confusing. To make matters worse, I apparently cannot get another trial or easily talk to a representative (which is why I'm posting here). I want to like Netflix, but, so far, there's simply no incentive for me to switch when there's nothing on the site to convince me that Netflix is more deserving of my dollars.

  10. Congratulations, Netflix!! It has been an awesome experience since I've been your customer. I am in the 10th year of my subscription and looking forward to many more. It's amazing to see and experience how progressive and innovative your organization is. Keep up the good work.

  11. Great now I know why it takes 8 weeks to see a new release. Stock up !

    ReplyDelete
  12. Congratulations Netflix! I am happy to be a part of the growing family of renters!

    ReplyDelete
  13. First of all, congratulations to Netflix and to us all- the 10 million people who believe in you! I'm in my 6th year of subscription and it has been a great experience so far! I've recommended you to all my friends and not one person is disappointed!
I purchased the ROKU and we are even more excited about Netflix! We like it so much that we are thinking of buying a second one so we can watch online on both Tv's. We are waiting impatiently for the opportunity to watch movies directly from Amazon. Is there a release date on that?
Thank you so much for improving our life by giving us the opportunity to get rid of these awful commercials, to choose from so many movies in just seconds, for saving us the money on so much late fees and to give us the opportunity to educate our kids with a large variety of nature and animal documentaries as well! No need for Animal Planet and Discovery anymore ( the only reason we had ever paid cable before)!
One more thing....can you please, please, please add more instant children's movies? It seems like things are going slowly on this end and my 2 small rabid viewers have watched their favorite stuff gazillion times so far. We need something new! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thank you for adding Intel Macs, Tivo and Samsung Blu Ray players as devices to access streaming. I had no desire for a separate box a la Roku so I greatly appreciate this move.

Also, keep concentrating on what you do well. What I mean is stay out of game rentals.

  15. Awesome, now it will take even longer to get new releases.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 600,000 more people so far in 2009, so about $10,000,000 more per month. Will they use that money to buy more copies of new DVDs? Doubt it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. With so many new customers, maybe now you can add more copies so new releases don't take 2 months or longer to receive. Also maybe you can now change the stupid policy of who should receive new releases first, "those less likely to have a chance to get the new releases". That came straight from two different supervisors. I want to stay with Netflix also, but I feel I am as important as the new members and should be able to get new releases while they're still relatively new such as "Lakeview Terrace".

    ReplyDelete
  18. After all complaints from customers on Blog: Netflix is #1, you finally took that Blog off. Something to think about. Do you people read what is written by customers?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Congrats Netflix. However, I just cancelled my membership last night. We have tried for four weeks to get the Tudors: Season 2. We have also tried for four weeks to get Damages Season 1, not to mention numerous other titles that were all on long wait. I finally gave up when I discovered there was no way to even email anyone to express my frustration. In addition, your new release wall never actually shows the new releases. We typically went to Hollywood video's website to look at the new releases, and then came back and ordered on Netflix. Needless to say, the whole thing has been exhausting and should be simple. So, we switched back over to blockbuster online. Thought you would want to know.

    ReplyDelete
  20. We use Netflix instead of cable tv - no commercials, no missed shows.
The only thing I've noticed is that it takes a really long time to get a new release... I know the logistics are challenging - good luck guys!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. The problem is that I have waited for upto 33 days (after released date), some at two to three weeks, and still couldn't get the movie I wanted to watch, and currently, I have 8 movies still on 'very long wait' or 'long wait category'! All I'm getting are foreign movies and documentaries....
Spoke to Shaya (customer service manager)today, and all she could do was to suggest that I return movies on Saturdays, so that I can get new releases on Monday. Give me a break!
I even gave her suggestion how to deal with that, but I do not believe that she is in any position to do anything about it.

  22. I joined netflex this year and over this period they have become rather slow in recieving and mailing out films ordered. When I have called I am told it is the post office that is the problem. I have mailed items of diferent days at diferent post offices and they seem to processed at netflex on the same day. Maybe they should work on their company and less on press telling how good they are. Thank you

  23. Why does Netflix not provide easy email access for questions or comments? This is, after all, an internet-powered company--movies are selecetd over the internet, and can be viewed on personal computers. I have questions about movie titles and ratings, and I would prefer to ask them by email--but there is no email address. This is, I believe, not accidental or an overlooked issue, but considered and decided by Netflix top management.

Here are a few questions I would like answered:

    1. Why are some movies listed as "Very Long Wait" for very long periods of time. "Eden Lake," for example, has been so listed for over a month now.

    2. When is the purpose of allowing a movie that is not in the Netflix catalog to be "Saved." The movie does not exist, at least not for the viewer; and I've never found Netflix to suddenly make available one of these titles.

    3. Why are so many movies damaged? Is there not some sort of quality control system in place to guard against scratched or broken DVDs to be shipped?

But again, my primary reason for wtiting is to ask for--and complain about not having access to--an email address for Netflix. (By which I mean a link that I can click on the Netflix home page to provide me this service.

  24. I just got a Roku box and if I loved Netflix before, now its getting real close to me being able to cut the cable.

But actually I have a suggestion. If, like me, you have a family, then everybody picks different movies to watch. That makes the suggestions that crop up a bit off sometimes. Because, though its my account, several people in the household may be picking movies.

But there is a solution to this. If you guys set it up so that, on one account, you could have multiple usernames, that would be helpful. In other words, you'd log in under the one account, but if you had it set up for multiples, it might then ask you which person in the household you are. That way, you could keep track of ratings and suggetions for each person.

Not to mention that if you write a review, it usually has to be one person in the household writing the review. I'm sure there are many people who don't want their significant other writing reviews in their stead. Multiple sub id's would solve the problem.

    Just a suggestion.

  27. I've really enjoyed my 3 years of membership. I rave about you to everyone. reading the complaints in these blogs regarding length of time it takes to get films- may I suggest you load up your queu. There are so many fabulous films to watch and I find them through your ease of design. I don't know how long I wait for new releases because I never want for a good film. Keep up the great job.

  30. We love the Roku. It's our replacement for cable and the service is excellent.

    A few things:

    1) The HD capability causes the Roku to freeze periodically. We have to reset it everyday after we get the green screen.

    2) It would be nice to have folders for our Instant queue. We have too many movies in the queue and are using it as a sort of hybrid library / queue. It would be nice for our children to be able to go the folders with kids movies in it without having to sort through "grown up shows."

    3) We are concerned that as Netflix continues to add customers and Instant queues grow in popularity that the subscriber fee will cease profitably paying for the bandwidth and server resources needed to deliver a quality service. Either shows will have to be purchased / rented for a fee, the subscriber fee will have to be increased or instant viewing time per day will have to be limited. Can Netflix release any comments on commitments along these lines?

  31. To Poniman Tjokro in Los Angeles

The Netflix rep suggestion to return a movie on a Saturday to get a new release movie has actually worked for me.

But you must know when the movie is coming out.

For example, High School Musical 3 is coming out Tuesday, Feb 17th. You should have return a movie yesterday, Saturday. Add HSM3 today, Sunday, to your queue at the number one spot. Tomorrow, Netflix will send you HSM3 to arrive Tuesday.

  32. I have a G-5 Mac. I access all kinds of digital content without a problem, and produce video on this system all the time, but the Netflix streaming standard precludes my participation. I have no idea why that should be, but it is very frustrating and seems very arbitrary.

  33. I just hate that no movies will be sent to me on the weekends - that's when people go out and rent movies - it's like the most important time! I understand it's great to have the weekends off. Although I don't get them off due to being an essential employee - I would like to get home on a Saturday night and have a movie waiting for me. I get tempted to stop at blockbuster - whats the point of having netflix if I can just stop there on a Saturday night?

    ReplyDelete
  34. that is why netflix has "instant watch". no need to drive to a video store. watch anytime. 24/7.

but if you want a dvd on a saturday, plan your return. send a movie back on a Thursday and get a movie by mail on a Saturday.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yea, it's taking longer and longer for dvd turnaround (which makes the number of dvds you can watch in a month less and less), customer service couldn't care less, and it takes forever to get a new release (I've been waiting for Flight of the Conchordes for weeks now - and I don't think that's even a new release). You guys are floating on increasing customerage because the economy is so bad people can't afford to go to the movies, but I'm just going to keep decreasing my plan and I'm going to try Blockbuster. Netflix just keeps getting worse and worse.

  39. I think Netflix should have a section where members can suggest movies that Netflix does not have yet...

Like the BBC adaptation of Cranford that came out in 2007...

(sorry, did not know where else to put this suggestion)

  40. I encountered a new problem the other day. When I switch a movie from DVD to Blu-Ray in my queue or vice versa, and the availability date for the selected format is not known, the movie drops automatically into the "Saved" section of the queue. The problem with this is that I cannot simply check whether it is available without it dropping out of my queue, having to change the format back and manually REPLACE it to its original spot in my queue. Highly annoying.

If the #1 dvd on your list is not available, Netflix will send the next dvd. So it does not affect the number of dvds you can watch in any period.

So while waiting for Flight of the Conchords, watch other movies.

  42. Great news - so why is it taking SOOOOO long to get a new release? I've been Netflix member for several years and have never had to wait over 2 wks for a new release - until now. I've been waiting for 2 "new" releases for over a month!!!

If you run out of watch instantly content in which I'm interested, then I'll cancel my subscription again.

  45. I tried to find an email link to Netflix tech for over an hour. I am trying to watch the instant movies. I have 5 to 12 megs per SECOND down load speed and I am STILL getting messages saying my speed has slowed and the player does not reload. I would just like a straight answer here. I know its not my DSL slowing below specs. I am FAR above what is required, so what is going on?? Does it just not work right?

  46. I wrote last week about my frustrations with long waits w/netflix. We cancelled our membership last week, joined Blockbuster and immediately had Tudors Season 2 (two days after joining) and I had been waiting for it from Netflix FOR A MONTH. Something is seriously wrong with this company and there doesn't seem to be any response/concern whatsoever from customer service - this is the only place you can even express your concern in writing.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Make it so we can pay for Watch Now service so we can complain about your servers being so terrible, without you telling us 'it's free, deal.'

What a shady, crummy way of dealing with customer service.

    ReplyDelete
  48. No wonder I haven't seen a movie in weeks. Obviously you don't have enough movies to support that many people. Every single movie in my queue has a wait. Do I need to find someone else to give my money too to actually watch a movie that was made last year? Quarantine, Pineapple express, The Rocker, Changeling and Body of Lies- not available. WTF? Get on it!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Great... that just means those of us that have "roughed it" since the beginning are gonna suffer more. Those of us that knew how good the service used to be years ago, will only experience more and more delays in getting movies we want and will get shafted even more while they "butter up" the n00bs.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I've actually gone and used 2-week Free Trials at Blockbuster's online service to get some of those movies that have been sitting at the top of my queue for weeks. Interestingly enough... they seem to have them in stock.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What's the rush to see the new movies? I hear the cinema has them even before Netflix does. Oh what a world.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Congratulations NetFlix!

I've been a member for years and have just upgraded to your "8-at-a-Time" plan. I have a couple of requests.

You have a very good selection of DVD choices. I love TruTV Network programs. However, I canceled my 10-yr service with my satellite carrier and can't get TruTV locally OTA.

Will TruTV be making DVD's available? If they do start marketing DVD's, please add TruTV to your list of TV Networks Genre.

Also, I live out in the boonies where High Speed Internet is not available. I'd like to participate in "Watch Instantly", but my internet connection is way too slow. BlockBuster has a Video Streaming plan that allows downloading and keeping a program for a limited time. That would be perfect for people like me. I could completely download a program overnight & watch it w/in the next few days. Will NetFlix consider this option?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I have to say that I love Netflix. We got rid of cable and got NF and are saving so much money and still being entertained. Along with a lot of people's comments I'm seeing, I have to say that Prince Caspian was at the top of my queue for well over a month, almost 2 months. I never actually received it because I took it off my queue and just rented it from the $1 rental box they have at the grocery store now. So perhaps the priority issue needs to be addressed. Something along the lines of the customer who has had it at the top of their queue the longest? I think that after a month I would be willing to wait a day for shipping if I was the next in line. Perhaps and email or alert in our queues if this is a possibility and then people can either choose to wait or move down to the next movie? I'm sure there's better ways but I'd just like to see it working better. One other thing is that I've noticed that a lot of the TV shows that are available to watch after the episode has aired don't actually come available when they are supposed to. For example, I usually watch Heroes on netflix because of the lack of commercials, which I prefer, and it says right in the description that this show has "new episodes every Tuesday!" but It's now after midnight, pacific time, so technically Wednesday everywhere in the country, and Monday's episode isn't available. I wouldn't mind so much if it weren't for the promise given of getting to watch it on Tuesday. Maybe just change the description? I've noticed it with other shows too. The only other thing I find annoying is that if I have a question of suggestion of some kind I either have to call or come on the blog, and it would be much easier if I could just send an email that could be replied to in a day or two. Mostly I just have simple questions, and don't generally want to fuss so much that I call the help number, but would maybe like an answer. Also, I used to have a friend who worked for a netflix call center out in Hillsboro, OR, and I know that she would have preferred to not have to talk directly to some of the kooks who call the hotline for silly reasons. Anywho, all in all I love me some Netflix, so I'm not on the verge of leaving or anything, but nobody's perfect right?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think Netflix is broken. I never get my first selection, even when it says it's available. Call the toll-free geeks, and they blah blah blah. Well, fix the stupid website! I want to be number one too. So, if I leave, does thaty mean you're down to 9,999,999?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Netflix is ok. liked it for like 2 weeks. but the instant libaray is lacking. Really dont care for most the shows/movies that are there. Kinda weak.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have had Netflix since November 2008 and at the end of the month, I am planning to suspend my Netflix membership for 3 months and switch to Blockbuster. I thought I would take this opportunity to share my experience with you and explain what I think you're doing right as well as what you're doing wrong.

My biggest problem with Netflix centers on title availability. Either you have quietly begun to throttle my shipments or your Blu-ray inventory for new titles is woefully inadquate (or both). Either way, it's extremely frustrating. All of the relatively new Blu-ray titles I queued up have "Long Waits" or "Very Long Waits" on Netflix, and they sit at the top of my queue for weeks without ever getting sent. You just keep passing them over and sending the next "Available" movie. For example, I waited over a month for Pineapple Express and never got it.

I signed up for a free trial of Blockbuster at the beginning of the month and at least half of the 30+ movies that were on my waiting list at Netflix were immediately available at Blockbuster. The other half still has a wait at Blockbuster but so far they have been pretty good about sending them to me anyway. I don't know if my experience is in line with everyone else's, but for the movies I am most interested in (mostly new release Blu-rays), I would definitely give Blockbuster the edge for title availability.

One thing that I have noticed about Blockbuster is that they will hold up my queue for a few days if the movies at the top have a wait. In this situation, Netflix just passes over the movies that have waits and sends me the next one that's available. It's hard to say which approach I prefer. On the one hand, it's bad not to have any movies coming to me because my queue is being blocked by something that has a wait. But on the other hand, it seems like this gives me a better chance of getting the movies I really want if I'm willing to wait an extra day or so. It would be nice to have the option in my account preferences.

Blockbuster's in-store exchange is kind of nice, but I know it's not something Netflix will ever be able to match. I found several movies that I was going to have to wait for via mail available in my local store. However, I'm not big on driving to the store since it's not exactly on my way to anything. If I decide I'm not interested, I can choose a plan without in store exchanges, at which point Blockbuster's plans become a few dollars cheaper than the equivalent Netflix plan, especially taking into account your $1 Blu-ray tax. I think you should bring your rates in line with Blockbuster's mail-only rates in order to remain competitive.

Your "Watch Instantly" streaming service isn't really a plus for me because I don't want to watch movies on my computer, and I don't have a Tivo, Xbox, or Roku player. I tried to use Netflix on my PS3 with PlayOn, but this combination is just not ready for prime time. Movies will frequently stop playing half way in, and since fast forwarding doesn't work, you have to watch the whole thing from the beginning (assuming it will even start playing again). Talk about frustrating! It's so bad that I've basically given up on trying to use streaming. I realize that this is probably PlayOn's fault, not yours, but it doesn't really matter whose fault it is--I just want it to work. Maybe streaming would be more appealing if I had another device that supported it out of the box (or better yet, if you added official support for the PS3 and didn't make me buy anything else). But frankly, even then, your streaming catalog leaves a lot to be desired and doesn't make up for the title availabilty problems with your disc inventory.

On the subject of websites, I have to say that you definitely have the edge here. Blockbuster's website is not nearly as nice, nor is the community of reviewers nearly as vibrant (or, it would seem, intelligent). Also, Blockbuster's implementation of AJAX queue re-ordering is completely unusuable, but you guys have it nailed. However, one thing I do like better about Blockbuster's queue management is that they provide the ability to lock all the discs in a season into an atomic unit, which can then be re-ordered all at once. Only after digging through your help did I realize that you will not send me the second disc in a series out of order. This is a great feature, but it's completely non-obvious to a new user that it works that way. I spent the first few months of my subscription afraid to leave a TV series at the top of my queue because I thought you'd send the discs to me out of order. Blockbuster's locking mechanism makes it obvious that series of discs will be treated as a unit, and I'd love to see Netflix emulate this feature.

Finally, I love the fact that Netflix has an open web service API, so I can manage my queue on the go from several free iPhone Apps. I haven't seen anything similar for Blockbuster, and I'll really miss this.

I think Netflix is a pioneer and I have a great respect for your company. Blockbuster is a copy-cat and not an innovator, and if all else were equal, I would much rather give my money to you. I hope I can give you another chance down the road and see better results, but at the moment I'm simply not getting my money's worth.

  59. I can emphatize with those experiencing the long waits for the new releases.

On the other hand, I don't want Netflix to raise the subscription fees because they now have to order 10 million copies of each new releases to accommodate the demand.

I mean, you already waited six months for the movie to come out on DVD, another two to three month wait for that new release should be fine.

  64. Just about done with Netflix...

For months you promised a Mac solution. It came. It was a Microsoft solution on a Mac. I didn't load it on my Mac because that would make no sense. If you understood anything about Mac users you'd understand that by in large, we don't like the invasiveness, underhanded upgrade tactics, near virus-like "can't get rid of it once it's installed" nature, and technical / security glitches of Microsoft software. However, I did install silverlight on an old PC we have in the house. It worked fine for a while but - now it constantly demands that I upgrade the browser and from time to time it simply refuses to play movies. This is classic Microsoft schtick - using me as their free beta tester. Forcing me to help them solve their problems because they lack the diligence to ship quality software and instead push their bugs and security risks out to the public to deal with. I am forced to put up with it at work, but I cannot abide it in my own home as a source of my personal entertainment. Moreover you should consider that in allowing these ne'er do wells into your product, you likely face legal risks should people's computers be compromised as a result of the buggy Microsoft software you are mandating. A year ago I wouldn't have thought there was a scenario under which I'd drop Netflix, but I have to tell you - I'm out looking for options as of tonight. This, very likely, is goodbye - or a precursor to it. Netflix instant viewing is no longer fun for me. It brings up the angst and feelings I have when dealing with broken software at work. Very very poor move on your part.

  65. I am a little disappointed with your rating system. I have been watching some movies that i neither dislike nor like. I don't feel strongly enough about them to mark as "i don't like" but i also don't feel srongly enough to mark it as "I like it". can you please come up with a star that says something like "indifferent", "alright", "ok" or "bearable"?

Also I looked everywhere on your website to email my comment to someone but its not easy to get a hold of anyone. I would suggest having a comments/suggestions email address. otherwise it seems you don't want to hear from your customers.

    Thanks!

  66. Alison, they don't want to hear from customers with complaints---only ones with much praise, but from what I see, that's few and far between.

  67. Netflix,

I would sincerely appreciate it if you made an effort to include long lost movies such as Disney's Susie Q that I have been looking for forever! And please make more of your movies and shows instant if possible (althogh I realize a majority of it has to do with the fact that most people don't have the fiber optic cable capabilities to stream high traffic signals), I 'm just asking a small favor.

    Thanks!

  68. I have been a Netflix member for some 5 years now. They have given me very good service until lately.

I have 2 movies in my queue that say available now. But customer service says that doesn't necessarily mean so.

Hey either it's now or never, now means NOW!, not next week or month.
Either get your act together or I'm gone.

  69. A meaningful acheivement but not if you can't get the movies in your Queue. I spend a long periods of time waiting for my movies to come out from "the long wait" in my Queue. Why spend the money on 2 at a time when you can't even get 1at a time. Evidently demand far exceeds supply.

  71. Our family has trusted Netflix as it's source for home movie viewing UNTIL now! My husband and I have protected our account by allowing G, PG or PG-13 movies as the rating allowed to guard our children from inappropriate viewing for their age. To my great disappointment Instant Viewing through our X-Box 360 has NO RATING PROTECTION! How did Netflix allow this to happen! I'm horrified! We'll have to cancel.

    ReplyDelete
  72. the thing i don't like about Netflix...when we would go to the video store i would pick out a movie, as would my husband, and my kids. no matter how (or how often) i sort my queue, i sometimes end up with 3 movies for the kids and nothing for myself to watch. even when all movies are "available now" they aren't always shipped in the order in my queue. since i have the 3 out at a time plan, i would like to have 3 seperate queues so i could have 1 movie at a time out from each queue. make sense?

  73. I've been using Netflix for about 6 weeks and really like the selection and the speed in which movies are changed out. What I don't like is the website - why is it so Firefox-unfriendly? Did you know the tiny fonts are very hard to read in Firefox, and that 45% of web users are now browsing with Firefox?

    ReplyDelete
  74. I haven't been a member long and I don't have the patience to wait on movie's. Please will someone explain the meaning of short wait, long wait, save and the plus 1, minus 1, plus 2, minus 2. If I have to wait for a "NEW release" to become old than I'll just rent it and be done with it. There are so many older movies I missed and classics to see. Thank You Netflix for taking the pain and stress out of movies night.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I have been a Netflix member for about 7 years now. I have noticed each year it takes longer to get movies. I don't mean the mail takes longer, I mean the list for "long wait" and "very long wait" seems to grow.

  76. I have been a netflix members for a couple of years. My main complaint is that netflix in some strange way limiting the amount of movie you get per month. I used to get like 2 sets of movie per week, now i am only getting 1 set, regardless of how early i send back the first set. Plus, the new release takes a very long time to be available.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I used to love netflix until ALL my movies in my queue were "long wait list" so I'm paying for NOTHING!! (since none of these are instant.

    PLEASE Buy more DVDS!
Please ADD NEW releases to Instant if you cant mail them!

FYI - "Hound dog" is in the stores yet you have it listed as "Availability Unknown"?

  78. Recently a friend asked if I would recommend netflix or if she should go with another service. I told her I would have recommended netflix a few years ago, but that now members are often paying a monthly fee to be on waiting lists. I already reduced my membership and I am considering canceling it now. It occurred to me that if I wouldn't recommend it to a friend, why am I using it myself?

  79. I've noticed something new with so many people now on Netflix: On the queue that loads up to 500 DVD's titles all at once, there was a severe lag that went away when I logged on again later that night. This lag was so severe that for 20 + minutes both my Firefox and IE browser did nothing but freeze after clicking on the queue.

With 5 million+ people logging on after work all at once accessing their queue with a huge amount of data -- up to 500 movies each then this lag is going to become more noticeable to many more over time. This current system is not going to hold up for long with these high user demands.

When I access my e-mail, I find that if I have 500 messages load all at once -- it takes a long time, but they have a solution: if I select an option to view only 50 messages at one time, I can access my messages instantly.

Why doesn't Netflix do that? Give a choice that yes we can access all 500 movies at once, but we can also access a range of 10, 15, 30, 50, or 100 in the queue and click "next" and "previous." Like my e-mail, this should speed up the Queue during peak times if you have 100+ movies. Also by using this system, Netflix can get rid of the 500 movie barrier. With more and more subscribers logging on, something has to be done about this and soon.

  81. I just wish there was an easier way for customers to provide feedback as to what annoys us and what we love. The only time Netflix pretends to care about its customers is when they cancel their membership.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Netflix needs to stopping worry about the fact that they have 10 million members and worry about the people that have been with them for years. Keep up your sucky service and you will be down a couple of million customers b4 you know it. I have been totally screwed the last couple of months, I think it time to organize a little boycott.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I have been getting nothing from the top of my list, I have had movies that are on short wait, for two months and yesterday my husband called and what do you know they are sending us the one from the top of our list, that shouldn't have to happen. Either they are coming cracked and scratched or nothing. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE (we have been getting know less than 1 damaged disc a week, who is checking them). You can call customer service 100 times and get 100 different answers. I hope all you NEW customers that have been getting the royal treatment have enjoyed it because it want last long. I will be canceling my service, now you will only have 9,999,999 to be concerned about.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Personally I think that you now have 9,999,999 more than you can support. Over the past few weeks the wait for DVDs (especially BlueRay) has really deteriorated. Anything at all recent or worth watching in my queue now say Short or Long wait. In the past, it was rare to see these messages and then "Short Wait" normally seemed to mean "available now". Now Short Wait seems to mean "never".

  91. We used to be able to suggest movies to put out on Netflix. Evidendtly that feature has been removed. The help for Netflix.com says suggestions have been moved to Movie Notes, but I can't find that. Where can you enter suggestions?

I wanted to suggest "A Powerful Noise," http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1202574/, a new documentary.

  92. I have loved being a member for almost three years now but recently I have been extremely disappointed with the wait times. All the new releases or popular movies are long wait or very long wait. I hate to say it but people I know who are members with Blockbuster don't have the same problem. Maybe it's time to switch if wait times are not reduced. Please order more copies of the movies.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I wanted to complain, because I've already been waiting over a month for my number one choice, and I was just notified that it's not coming this time either. There's no way to contact anyone through "contact" on the site. Apparently, this is the only way to register a complaint. I'm sure Neyflix doesn't care what we have to say, but after reading these comments, I've decided to cancel my subscription.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Been a netflix subscriber for over a year and sadly I think this will be my last month. The wait times for new releases are just stupid long. Into the Wild will be out on HBO before I see that movie, or Body of Lies. You name it, if it's new, good luck getting your hands on it within 2 or 3 weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I am getting to the point that I am going to have to consider dropping Netflix in favor of something like Redbox. At a dollar a DVD you can't seem to beat it. I don't care how many customers you have, but if you can't come up with enough new releases, then I will have no choice. I am doing the 3 at a time system, but with 35 requests in my queue, you would think that I wouldn't have to wait over a week to get something shipped to me. If you can't come up with something to ship, then how about a reduction in the price I pay per month?

    11. DVD - Short Wait
    12. Blu Ray - Short Wait

    15. Blu Ray - Short Wait
    16. DVD - Long Wait
    17. Blu Ray - Short Wait
    18. DVD - Long Wait

Side note, 90% of those on 'Short Wait' have been that way for MONTHS. I have 7 films coming out on the 10th, and I can only imagine what my queue will look like for the next 5 months.

  97. It's not just new releases. I've had ER season 1 at the top of my queue for well over a month. I finally called to ask if they really had it.

Perhaps it will come some day.

I wonder how many new discs they buy for x amount of customers. Do they get another 1/4 million customers, but keep the same amount of discs in play?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Sorry, but I fail to find anything "funny" in anything you just said. Let's say you go to McDonald's because they are having a sale on Big Mac's, and you've already paid for the meal. This is the 15th consecutive time you've went to get these Big Mac's and they are still completely out of them. Then, some moron behind you in line says, "Well, that's funny. Maybe you should just order something else."

  102. 12:30 am in California on a Thursday (not exactly peak viewing time) and the watch instantly doesn't work, although my internet connection is fine. No announcements on your website, no way to alert customer service by email (unless I want to waste my time on twitter?), and a 20 minute wait on hold by phone. Come on. I can live with the problem. Just not the lack of communication.

    ReplyDelete
  103. 10 million! I want to be one! Oh, wait: I am in Russia! Darn!
Do not understand me wrong: I am not expecting to receive disks in mail. It is hard enought to get an eBay purchase into Russia. However I would really love to have an opportuntity to watch streamed movies and TV series.
Does Netflix ever considering expanding abroad? You guys probably think that you do not need to; but here is a "noble" side of it: people like me will stop using torrents to download latest episodes of popular shows and movies and will start paying back the creators of those products. I want to be one of them!
And Xbox is already available in Russia.
So what are you waiting for?

    ReplyDelete
  104. I love the instant access but could you add Firehouse Dog to the instant list. Thanks, DJ

  105. I was told by someone who worked for your major competitor that one of the reasons that your new releases are on such long wait holds is because their company has the options to rent them before you do. I tend to believe him, as so many new films for rent there are marked with "Exclusively available from Blockbuster" stickers on them, So, with 10,000,000 members, what does it take for Netflix to get some "Exclusively rented at Netflix" offers, as the Blockbuster down the street has?
Your system of putting all new releases on "Long wait" and not advertising them at all in your "New Release" lists is one of the biggest reasons I also rent from them - your company policy causes me to. I can be sure that if I want to see a new hit movie just released - I won't get it from you, but I will always have it available from them. Something to think about, Netflix guys...

    ReplyDelete
  106. One other thought I had for the members - maybe we should organize a mass hold on our accounts - sort of a class action - for one month to see if it has any effect on how Netflix decides to listen to the concerns of their members. Take the opportunity to put your account on hold for a month and check out some of the other choices out there - We might just find a service that actually listens to us! Anybody willing to look into this?

    Thanks,

    Paul

  107. One step ahead of ya. My membership is getting canceled prior to the next billing cycle. I'd cancel it now, but membership effectively stops the moment you cancel rather than running through the end of your paid month.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Netflix had a good idea and has a good name, hey, they caught 10 million + Americans attention but they also have caught the eyes of the competition now it's time to work on your people skills and keep them happy or lose your precious 10 million you seem to care so deeply about. Send a spy into Blockbuster to see when the movies are really going to be released.I just put a movie on my list that was made in 2003 and you don't even know when it's coming out? Get Real!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  109. I am one of those new customers you mentioned..but probably not for long. The first 24 hours were great, I was able to watch instantly the movies of my choice with little to no problems. However, after repeatedly receiving a blank screen while trying to play a selection, I made the dreaded call to customer service. While the representative was courteous she constantly put me on hold to get advice from a technician. Ok, why was I not speaking with a technician about a Technical Problem?

Anyway, she explained that because I was using Silverlight, a Microsoft product I would need to contact them because it's there problem. Microsoft said I need to contact hp. Seriously? If this is a software that Netflix is requiring customers to use then you should be required to provide support for it.

Good thing I'm still under the free trial period so that by the time I cancel I'm not actually out any money. I've been reading message boards and have heard many frustrations about the same issue.

    ReplyDelete
  110. The only problem I have with Netflex, and it's a very big one is the new movies that are released each week have an extraordinary long wait after I put them in my queue. I end up renting the new movies at one of the local video stores near by... your competitors.

I wish you could fix this problem soon!

    Thanks for letting me vent,

    JoanA

  111. Paul, I am with you 100%, I for one am willing to put my account on hold for 1 month (or permantently). We all could agree on a month in which to do it, that would be great. 112. Congratulations on hitting 10 million Netflix members - it probably could have been 20 million members if you would guarantee that once we joined we would never see another one of your annoying pop-up ads for the rest of our lives. 116. While it is great that you have so many members I believe that it is beginning to hurt the members. I have had several movies in my list for awhile with "long wait". Awhile being they have been listed as long wait for over a month. When do you decide it is time to purchase more copies so that these wait times get shorter?

    ReplyDelete
  117. I knew that Netflix has a whole lot more customers because it takes months now to get a new release movie. If that doesn't change soon I will have to cancel Neflix. I am running out of "old" movies to watch. I am a customer who pretty much sends back the DVDs the next day. So I expect not to have ten movies on top of my list with LONG WAIT as the availability. You have more customers that means you need to have more DVDs in stock otherwise you'll loose valuable customers. It is just common sense.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I just read this website http://dvd-rent-test.dreamhost.com/ and came to realize that Netflix doesn't see me as a valuable customer. Here I thought that I am doing them a favor by sending the DVDs back so quickly. Well, I guess I will finish watching the DVDs I have on my list and then I am going back to the old fashion was of renting. Going to the movie store and renting movies I really want to watch.

However, I don’t pay by the disc, I pay by the month and when I have to ask twice for the same movie, that’s about a week lost from my month’s paid subscription. I find this annoying, as I feel there should be some some dollar adjustment for my lost time.

  133. There was this guy who believed very much in true love and decided to take his time to wait for his right girl to appear. He believed that there would definitely be someone special out there for him, but none came.
Every year at Christmas, his ex-girlfriend would return from Vancouver to look him up. He was aware that she still held some hope of re-kindling the past romance with him. He did not wish to mislead her in any way. nike shoxsSo he would always get one of his girl friends to pose as his steady whenever she came back. That went on for several years and each year, the guy would get a different girl to pose as his romantic interest. So whenever the ex-girlfriend came to visit him, she would be led into believing that it was all over between her and the guy. nike womens shoes The girl took all those rather well, often trying to casually tease him about his different girlfriends, or so, as it seemed! In fact, the girl often wept in secret whenever she saw him with another girl, but she was too proud to admit it. Still, every Christmas, she returned, hoping to re-kindle some form of romance. But each time, she returned to Vancouver feeling disappointed.
Finally she decided that she could not play that game any longer. puma mens shoes Therefore, she confronted him and professed that after all those years, he was still the only man that she had ever loved. mens puma shoesAlthough the guy knew of her feelings for him, he was still taken back and have never expected her to react that way. He always thought that she would slowly forget about him over time and come to terms that it was all over between them. nike shox Although he was touched by her undying love for him and wanted so much to accept her again, he remembered why he rejected her in the first place-she was not the one he wanted. nike 360 air maxSo he hardened his heart and turned her down cruelly. nike running shoesSince then, three years have passed and the girl never return anymore. They never even wrote to each other. NIKE air shoes The guy went on with his life..... still searching for the one but somehow deep inside him, he missed the girl.
On the Christmas of 1995, he went to his friend's party alone. "Hey, how come all alone this year? Where are all your girlfriends? What happened to that Vancouver babe who joins you every Christmas?", asked one of his friend.nike air max He felt warm and comforted by his friend's queries about her, still he just surged on.
Then, he came upon one of his many girlfriends whom he once requested to pose as his steady. He wanted so much to ignore her ..... not that he was impolite, wholesale nike shoes but because at that moment, he just didn't feel comfortable with those girlfriends anymore. nike shox torchIt was almost like he was being judged by them. The girl saw him and shouted across the floor for him. Unable to avoid her, he went up to acknowledge her.
"Hi......how are you? Enjoying the party?" the girl asked.
    "Sure.....yeah!", he replied.
She was slightly tipsy..... must be from the whiskey on her hand.

  136. Hey Netflix, I've been a member for almost 10 years, and I can NEVER get a new movie until weeks, sometimes MONTHS after it is released. The last three movies I received were all from way past the top 10 in my Queue. I read an article in the NY Times about how you intentionally move older customers to the "end of the line" in order to put newer customers first...apparently, in order to impress them with your service. Well, that just stinks. If you take a look at my Queue, the top 10 movies I have listed ALL say "Long Wait" or "Very Long Wait." And these are movies that were just released within the past 3 weeks. I am seriously considering taking my business over to Blockbuster' site. There, I'll be a new customer and maybe they'll treat me better. This is NOT the way to reward loyal members.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I'm in agreement with the last poster. I've been a member since July and up until a few weeks ago I thought Netflix was perfect. Now I have a queue of the last 4 new releases that all say either "Long Wait" or "Very Long Wait" and I'm watching my 5th, 6th and 7th choices instead. Sadly, the new releases are still sitting in the queue unchanged after weeks. So, bottom line...if you want a cheap way to get movies that are several months (or more) old, then Netflix is the way to go. If you want a "new release" then you'll have to get in your car and drive to the store. Netflix is yet another example of a company that's grown too fast. These things have a way of taking care of themselves over time...they lose customers. Some of my friends have already decided that redbox is a better way to go. Maybe they're right. Time will tell.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Oh, you think having your top 5 or 6 with a "very long wait" status is bad?? Try the top 10!! I've been watching numbers 12, 13, 14 & 15 on my queue. Something's gotta give!

  141. How about upgrading the instant viewer system so that people are able to control it more. If I want to rewind a scene on my PC I have to go through the whole buffering screen and it takes forever! Customers should be able to control scene selections on instand viewing. Whats it going to hurt? If I'm watching a film instantly maybe I want to skip a scene or replay a scene with out waiting for it to re-upload and buffer. Also, how about an email of suggestions and or questions system so that customers can easily email suggestions or questions they may have. With 10 million customers and growing I'm sure you guys can afford to upgrade.
