Response...

From what I have experienced, the Tivo already allows for HD streaming from NetFlix. The blog entry further down the page also seems to confirm this.

Is there going to be an easier way to identify new "HD" titles that have been added to Watch Instantly? Right now it's very difficult to know what new titles have been added to the "HD" Watch Instantly "genre". Thank you.

Is this actually going to be affecting vanilla Netflix users?

I connect my computer to my tv but can't seem to find Watch Instant titles in "HD"

Thanks.

Still waiting for PC HD watch now. You remember the PC right, those people who were the first ones to use watch now! I have always been really happy with Netflix as a company but this is starting to irritate me.

I too utilize a home theater PC w/ Blu-ray and am hoping that PC get an HD option in the very near future; it appears we now have the worst streaming option.

Yeah, just look under the "genres" menu. You'll see HD.

@ Amsaddr-b & Anonymous,

Come on guys, it’s our turn (PC users) to have a little patience. We had the ONLY access for, what, a year / year and a half before everyone else. Silverlight is being phased in as the default viewer and that will bring many changes – most likely including HD for PC. (From the complaints I’ve read, I’d rather let the early adopters work all the bugs out for me.) NF can’t wave a magic wand and have everything available to everyone at the same time.

Netflix: Have you been PAYING ATTENTION to the HUGE number of films that now have TERRIBLE audio-video sync problems now with your new encoding?

See this ongoing thread: http://forums.rokulabs.com/viewtopic.php?t=18781

What are you going to do immediately to restore access to WATCHABLE films, while you sort out the problem?

Anonymous said...

I'm also waiting as patiently as possible for HD on the PC. Well, that and an official Netflix plug for Vista Media Center, but the HD on the PC above all.

Daniel said...

Please support HD on the PC! My computer monitor runs at a higher resolution than my TV set does.

The ROKU box with the HD software update still has problems with throughput. I often start out with four dots, but always fall back to two dots after a short period. The movies stop to resync so often, the service is unusable. Debug mode on the ROKU shows 0.5 megabits/second during the brownouts - yet speed tests via my PC during the same period show 5-7 megabits/second. Nobody seems to be taking responsibility? Is it my ISP doing bandwidth shaping? Is the ROKU box buggy? Are Netflix servers starved for bandwidth? Is Netflix network peering to Time Warner set up wrong? This is not a new problem - but the upgrade didn't help.

Still waiting to watch instantly on linux...

If its on roku why not make it available to my linux puter somehow

I have an old macbook g3 and linux machines ...none of which allow me to watch instantly.

Please ?

Joe J. said...

I haven't tested many films, but also noticed the same issues that "billg" noted: significant syncing issues on regular movies, and when trying HD, a 2-star connection.
I'm hoping it's temporary. It has been a wonderful service until this 1.5 update.

Kaycee said...

Mine is no way looks like HD after the update. I think one movie might have even looked worse. What am I doing wrong?

dennismoha said...

The new HD format is great. One question, when will surround sound capability be added?

Miles said...

Meanwhile, I remain unable to play Netflix streaming for lack of a Linux player for Netflix, not even one integrated into Boxee. I do not own any systems that run Windows and I do not wish to be coerced into spending precious money which would be better spent on other bills or goods if my computers are running quite well on a relatively popular and free operating system. This is bad comedy.

It should be first in first out. PC was first enabled for streaming it should get the opportunity for first HD streaming. Remember all the bugs and testing pc users have to endure to make this streaming work smoothly. That way you would also have a geeky large crowd to test hd streaming instead of relying on a smaller less geeky crowd of roku for testing

Adam Skinner said...

I'm interested as to why it isn't available for the PC. I imagine HTPC users are the bulk of the Watch Instantly users. Could it have something to do with the Silverlight transition? If so, why not enable it in Silverlight?

What are the technical issues at play here?

I'm hijacking this thread a bit, so I apologize in advance. How can I request a movie for the netflix library? There used to be a form, but it seems to have disappeared.

I would love for netflix to add "Concert of Wills: The building of the getty center" -- it's a classic documentary that you could easily promote to those who enjoyed the film helvetica.

if you think the HD is blu ray or even good OTA or cable/sat you will not be happy.

I think they need to have different tiers of HD because my TNT HD and other movie channels blow away feed even in HD. I get 4 dots HD with my 9mb down cable.

It's good, with HD so don't get me wrong but it should be more like HD* with the * being close to good DVD quality.

I'm very happy with the service but would like the HD to be better.

My 5 yr old component only 65" tv running a movie through cable on HD looks better than any HD streamed hdmi movie on my lcd.

good start and can't wait for better quality and a bigger selection.

Quiet Desperation said...

I haven't had to worry if an HD stream is available. If you have the player set to automatically select one, and you have the bandwidth, it seems to favor the HD stream if it's available.

Ran into my first audio sync issues, though, on the Jericho, Season 2 HD streams. Had to force it to the best of the non HD streams. Others have been OK so far. 720p streaming is pretty sweet.

It'd also be nice if it would check the link a little more carefully. I know my BW isn;t bouncing around between 2.0 and 4.5 like that. You need to do several pings (or whatever you are doing) and average them, or take one off the peak, or something.

Anonymous said...

Any chance that there will be recent announcements that Netflix is teaming up with any other box-makers out there to increase the streaming options?

*cough* PS3 *cough*.

Anonymous said...

Wow, there sure are a whiny bunch of users here. I installed Windows on my Macs to get this feature after the "soon" for OS X support started to feel like a little while. I bought the Roku Box to make it easier to utilize the feature on my TV. I'm in the tank a few hundred bucks on top of my monthly fees for WI.

Then some PC users complain that you might have to wait a little while for HD? First - chill, the HD isn't very good. Some films look worse. I pull down four-star quality and see more macroblocking, coloration shifts, and other weirdness now than ever before. Just enjoy the service and quit the bellyaching already.

When are "Starz Play" Movies going to come in HD? As far as selection Starz play has some of the better titles but pretty much the worst quality.

mike said...

Now let's get HD audio. Dolby Surround, DTS??? What's the point of HD video if you can't get HD sound?

Michael said...

I'm one of those people that has an HD set that won't accept a 720p input. Every other HD-capable device I have (2 upconverting dvd players, 2 OTA tuners, PS3, and cable box) can do the up-conversion from 720p > 1080i in the box. I'd love to see the roku box add this feature. I'd also love to be able to view the "watch instantly" titles on my PC in HD.

Benicio10 said...

I agree with the poster above that demands HD sound as well as video. Also, has Netflix bothered to check the Watch Instantly HD library? It's pitiful. Give us some good movies that are new!

Benicio, Netflix is limited what they can show via streaming by the studios. The studios don;t like streaming movies, so won't give them new releases.

Netflix is one of the significant players in the on-line delivery market and are moving forward with whatever content they can get.

Hopefully they can show the studios that this is the wave of the future, which may in turn encourage the studios to embrace new technology rather than fight it.

Of course another consideration, as far as the studios are concerned, is continuing to respect the release windows that feed the cinema operators with theatrical releases, the DVD distribution market which spikes DVD sales and rentals, and then the pay-per-view and cable market (which coincides with some of the Netflix Starzplay releases, and then finally the streaming providers.

If you guys at Netflix wanna do something really special for Netflix subs with your Watch Instantly feature, work something out with Nintendo to create a Netflix Channel for the Wii.

The Wii user base is huge. Netflix could add a lot of new subs by making this available, and pleasing a lot of existing subs like myself that do not want to add yet another set top box to their entertainment center.

Also, the SlingCatcher seems like the perfect vehicle for Netflix Watch Instantly, as well. The folks at Netflix should be all over Nintendo and Sling Media to make these things happen. It's win-win for all the companies involved.

I really found the Roku to be a great unit until the upgrade in December. Now I have noticed more movies where the voice is not in sync with the action and movies starting, running less than 5 minutes, and then stopping and either returning me to the 'Play' screen or displaying the loading progress bar and freezing up. Generally I press the up arrow and I am returned to the 'Play' screen but one time I had to hard reset the unit to break up the frozen progress bar. I am not sure what Netflix did, but it has definitely ruined Netflix's instant movie watching experience for me.

Sounds like an incompatibility between the new requirements and you current setup. Probably should contact Customer Service to fix

I am using Netflix Player by Roku which I received just after Christmas. A great deal of the time, it downloads at a glacial pace and then has to redownload again in about two minutes (again slowly). It will do this over and over. Very frustrating! Also, some movies are out of synch audiowise and others are fractured videowise. Help!

Your internet connection is not fast enough. Even if you meet the minimum requirements for speed, sometimes other factors come into play that can cause intermittent rebuffering of your stream.

Does anyone know if the new HD streaming by Roku is also in HD audio (DTS HD Master, Dolby TrueHD, DD+, etc.)?

The Roku box can support it, but I have heard that some of the streams are still provided in stereo.

I was considering buying a Roku box except:
HD Titles page for HD streaming content is missing, 100's ?
Netflix's Customer Service, good as it is, doesn't have a clue about HD streaming and Roku.
The HD streaming is based on Microsoft code, and with all the unpleasantness that generally involves, it looks to be very premature.
Audio is a huge question along with subtitling.
Resolution is 720p (Originally this was called ED or extended definition, but apparently succumbing to marketer pressures is now "HD") not the 1080 available in Blu-Ray (or the late HD-DVD).
I'm not willing to sing the Early Adopter Blues or pack up the Roku and send it back, so I'll pass for now…

What's the average size of a standard definition or HD (2hr) movie? This is going to be a big issue for the community - particular on the HD - because a lot of ISPs meter network usage. Comcast meters at 250GB/month.

At age 65 and somewhat jaded about business promotions and the lack of consistent quality and customer service in telephone, wireless, cable, satellite and ISP services in general, I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at the quality, ease of use, and excellent value of Netflix instant viewing with the Roku device. And I am doubly surprised and pleased that you have now added HD streaming along with a software upgrade that improves the quality of the streaming. I understand that it is still only 720i HD, but this is very good DVD quality and the streaming is smooth and uninterrupted. I fully expected it to take a year or two before this kind of movie viewing service was really available to the public. Now I feel like I'm already enjoying the future. Thanks for a great job, well done. Keep it coming.

I purchased the Roku Player after Christmas, this is the future of movie watching and what I have been waiting years for. I have had no issues with the Roku Player or Netflix Watch Instantly. The update went without any problems, I have no rebuffering issues, no sync issues, movies load almost instanly and alway get 4 dots and 4 dots/HD. I believe that in two years time the movie industry in Hollywood will see this as the future and go directly to streaming instead of DVD after a movie has left the theater. The big box movie rental store is dead and I shed no tears. Thanks Netflix and Roku I am very happy.

Got a Roku Friday sent it back Saturday spent an hour on the phone with tech that I couldn't understand and never got anywhere. I never got a picture for more than 10 minutes then it went out to reload. Picture quality was terrible. I have Quest broadband and get a great picture and sound on my pc, that what I am stay with and save $115.
Also they charged $14.95 to ship when it cost $6.69 to send back with a conformation request.

Video quality is poor with the Roku player even with 4 stars. No Dolby Digital or DTS with movies either.

Will send it back.

I wonder if the performance issues we're seeing are less about bandwidth and more about demand on the Netflix servers.

Customer Service,

I recently signed up for Netflix premium service because they offer a fairly comprehensive service including the ability to watch movies instantly through either my XBox 360 or our new Roku video device. I purchased the service and the Roku device as a gift for my wife who is deaf and really enjoys watching movies.

We first tried the XBox 360 and found that there was no button for subtitles. Later we connected the Roku and found the same problem. We spent several hours trying to figure out what was wrong and eventually discovered that although the Roko and XBox 360 are capable of decoding subtitles Netflix video streams do not include the necessary data.

However, we did notice that foreign films had the Subtitle data encoded directly in the feed (open captioning). Our question is this… Would Netflix be willing to create a deaf/hard of hearing instant queue section that includes open captioning in the same way that foreign films are captioned? Open captioning does not require any decoding and does not effect bandwidth because the captioning is overlaid directly on the movie itself. My wife and I watch open caption movies at the theater on special days and this would be great if Netflix adopted the same approach. This may be something that could be done quickly while Netflix works on a more streamlined solution.

Please forward this idea to the folks at Netflix or Roku who are working on this issue.

There are a lot of people in the deaf/hard of hearing community who are very interested in how this is being handled. We would really like to see some progress soon. This might be a way for Netflix to show support for our community while it works for a better solution.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Loren

Too bad that the movies, mostly from Starz are presented croped, and not on there original aspect ratio, very disapointed with this move is like watching regular TV again.

Two thumbs down from me. I want it on Ubuntu and Boxee. I wish I could turn off the links in Netflix so I wouldn't have this constant reminder that the service is available, but not for me.

Netflix streaming HD is great.

There's one fly in the ointment, though: ISP monthly bandwidth caps. My ISP (Charter) will start a 100GB/month cap next week.

I haven't done the math yet, but I'm guessing that means maybe only 10 movies/month for me, or else my ISP will cancel my service.

(YES - I'm actively searching for another provider; but in my city Charter is almost a monopoly.)

HD move is in the right dirextion, but I'm still disappointed with the edited-for-television aspect ratios.

Just bought the Netflix Player. Seemed to work good in the beginning....then the problems began. Movies and TV shows lockup or reset a third of the way when in HD mode. It also does it less frequently in 16:9 mode. I have cox priemier which should be fast enough. I've got a good wireless router a few feet. Why does the PLAYER screw up so much?
