LG Electronics and Netflix have announced the first broadband-enabled HDTVs with Netflix streaming software embedded directly in the TV, requiring no external device. LG's new LCD and plasma "Broadband HDTVs" will display the library of movies & TV episodes that Netflix members can watch instantly directly on the TV with Ethernet connectivity.
The new broadband HDTVs will be available for sale this spring. LG will demonstrate the HDTVs this week at the 2009 CES show in Las Vegas. In addition to the HDTVs, LG Electronics announced plans to release five new models of Blu-ray Disc players and home theater systems that can stream movies & TV episodes from Netflix.

Sony has their own movie download service, so they don't want to allow movie downloads on their machines from a competitor
I like netflix, and was super-excited with the idea of getting an xbox360 with netflix enabled... until I got to the signup form and couldn't submit because I live in Canada!
I only want to pay for the "watch instantly" feature, why, oh why can't they just enable "watch instantly" for those outside the US?
I can "rent" a movie via iTunes, and i'm sure someone will else will offer something like it at some point.. why can't it be Netflix?

The streaming rights for Netflix Instant Watch are only granted by the studios for viewing in the US only. Even Puerto Rico and Guam are excluded. Studio are scared of pirating.

I recently read somewhere that netflix is slowing down on their uploading of streaming newer releases because the studios are getting nervous about it. I just bought the Samsung Blu-ray with streaming netflix capability and can't wait to use it, but I was wondering if there is any truth to this. I also know the Netflix website has said 12,000+ streaming titles for quite a few months now, I was just curious about how often titles are added (new or old) is this number rapidly growing or are we at standstill?
How much are those going to cost?
Any word on whether it has to be my main account, or can one of my sub-profiles link up to this tv?

Jason, the studios don't let Netflix stream new movies. About he newest you'll find are the ones listed under the StarzPlay genre but those are the same ones that are playing now on Starz (cable). They've never been able to stream new movies, so it depends on what you call "newer releases."
General Question: Why are some movies shown as "Long Wait", but yet they don't show up on the top of the Most Popular list.
For example, the latest Narnia movie "Prince Caspian" tells me I have a long wait yet "The Notepad" and others like it continue to show up at the top of the most popular. If I am waiting for a movie, it should mean it is POPULAR!
The only reasons why this isn't true is if Netflix doesn't have that many copies for some reason.
Please advise.

The Most Popular list is a list of "all time" or for a "longer period of time." Not a "popular right now" list. There are probably 2,000,000 members wanting to rent Prince Caspian right now, but in a couple of months it won't be that popular, so it will never register on that most popular list. Movies like Crash, The Notebook have been popular rents for a long period of time so they show up on that list.

What are the plans to allow us to watch on our Apple computers?? You have this option for a PC but you are missing a growing and enthusiastic market. Stream to macs is a great new marketing push just like the integrated movies in LG products.

Why can't I watch instantly from within Chrome? I have to masquerade as firefox just to get dragging movies in my queue to work, but that also makes watch instantly work. Any reason you don't just treat the Chrome useragent string more like Firefox or Safari? At least let dragging items in the queue work from Chrome without making me masquerade as Firefox. This should be a very simple change on your end, shouldn't it?

My point is that there is no technical reason that it won't work in Chrome, so I am curious whether there is any reason it's not allowed, or just laziness because it's not worth taking even a small amount of time to support Chrome, which doesn't have a significant share of the browser market.

I doubt that they'd want to spend that large amount of resources on something that effects such a small amount of the user base when there are much larger issues to be addressed. In fact, as a member, I don't want them wasting time on it. Perhaps once it gains a larger market share but not now.

Netflix is limited to what they can provide for Instant Watching by the studios who don't like streaming of movies. That's why they limit the selection to older titles. Netflix is constantly adding new titles but until distributors change their culture, I'm afraid we'll only get older titles.

What do you mean by quality? If you are getting fuzzy quality of the stream, then you r ISP isn't fast enough to allow you get the high quality stream.

It works great. I have never encountered a rebuffer or hiccup and I watch about 5-8 Instant Watches per week.

Why isn't there any way to manually set image quality with Watch Instantly? "Basic" quality is terrible. If I want to wait extra for a film to load with higher quality settings, why shouldn't I be allowed to? There's not much point of streaming it to my HDTV if the image quality is this bad.
Also, the lack of any email support is disappointing. Why is Netflix the only company online that you can't email?

if you've ever used e-mail support for anything then you know why they only offer suppoert where you can talk to a live human being, usually within 2-3 minutes.
Netflix, you deliver dvds to Puerto Rico however we can't use the streaming service neither on PC nor on Xbox 360.
You even bill us the 7% PR state tax when you shouldn't and keep it to yourselves because you don't have a business entity located physically on the island. (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) But not even this bothers me.
The real thing bothering me is that you keep ripping benefits but treat PR like an alien country when the truth is we're part of the US since 1898.

The streaming contracts that NF has entered into with the studios/distributors does not allow streaming outside the 50 US states.
Hello. Thank you all for the suggestions re: sorting the Instant Play queue. I like the simple idea of numbering. However there are no numbers on the Roku generated screen. I have 190 in the queue. The computer is not always available at movie time. How about Netflix copying the computer screen format to the Roku TV screen? Now it is single file horizontally across the TV screen, a few at a time.
Another Q. Is the LG or Samsung Blu-Ray players WiFi capable? I read somewhere they were not. If not, why? The little Roku is WiFi and works great in HD. I use a HDMI switch between the DVD player and Roku. Works great! Thank you.

Please comment on why or what issues would cause Instant Streaming to stop working, after it has been working flawlessly for a month? I can see the movies in my Instant Watch Queue, but once a movie is selected (any in my queue), it shows the streaming screen, but after many minutes, it says the movie is not available, to choose another, but NONE of them will stream, same message, over and over.
I'd really love if you could take on developing an official window media center plugin. I know there are a couple independent plugins out there but they are buggy and often break, like vmcNetflix did for me last week. --No streaming vids since a week!!!!! i'm dying.
Streaming movies to my TV with media center is the number one reason I have Netflix. With media center I've got options though and could use another service, but I do so much like Netflix.

As all the posts in Minor Bugs have comments disabled, so I'm posting here. Using Mac OS 10.5.6 and Safari 3.2.1 I was getting good results on Instant Watching with DSL (there was usually a longish pause at one point in a film to "catch up" but the rest of the streaming was smooth). I recently upgraded to a Wimax ISP that has 6000 kbps download speeds (so it's not that it's too slow) and Instant Watching no longer works in Safari--audio is fine but video is like a slide show of still images. It works fine in Firefox however. Wimax is rapidly taking over our local market and probably will be big elsewhere eventually, and Mac users are about 10% of the market, so someone might want to know that there's a ceiling on how fast you can go before Safari stops working.

I just got the samsung blu-ray player with streaming netflix and at first glance it is a dream come true. The player is beautiful, picture quality great the netflix streaming is sooo easy.
On further review Im quite disapointed in the streaming netflix capability. What good is 12000+ streaming movies when 95% of them are old movies from the 50's and earlier that are classics in age only but definalty not in quality or reputation. I understand that the studios will not allow you to stream new releases. But why not upload a bunch of movies that were at least released in the last decade and not straight-to-dvd. Or at the very least, classics that really are classics like North By Northwest, Sunset Blvd, The Deer Hunter etc. Youd be hard pressed to find more than a handful of streaming movies from either of these huge catagories.
I understand that you cant upload everything, but c'mon throw us a bone.
i just got an xbox and a gold subscription. i have time warner's 5mb road runner service (fastest cable service available), yet i'm lucky if i get two bars on watch instantly (1 bar is too fuzzy).

In response to this above post. If you just want DVD's mailed, don't add movies to the Instant queue. It's that simple. Instant Watch is just an added bonus service of Netflix

why was the soft launch of hd streaming on all netflix ready devices but not the computer?? it would seem to me to go the other way around. Can netflix atleast give me a clue that hd streaming is coming to the pc so I don't have to waste my money buying a netflix ready device just to get hd streaming. I figured I'd try out the instant streaming, since the pricing makes more sense rather than buying a bunch of Amazon VoD rentals. I watched one movie and it was a pretty good experience, though the aspect ratio was wrong and calling the video quality "high" is a stretch. Subsequent attempts to stream movies has been frustrating. I am quite familiar with the red "your internet connection has slowed" (umm, excuse me?) buffering screen, even though I have 5mpbs waiting to be utilized. This isn't going to convert me into a paying customer, that's for sure.
Why doesn't any of the "Top Dogs" respond to the complaints under "Netflix is #1"? As far as talking to a live human...it would be nice to talk to a live human with a brain and honest answers.
It's frustrating there is nowhere to email for support questions. While NF telephone support is wonderful, I have better things to do than wait on hold to be told they don't have the information, namely...

I have a broadband connection using a Sprint WiFi card. My download speeds vary between 650 kbs to 1.2 mbs. When I watch streaming video on my PC it anoyingly hesitates once in a while to catch up. Does the Roku box allow any buffering of the signal to allow you to buffer up video before you start watching? Is there any other device that would buffer and allow me to watch streaming video on my TV with a slow download connection?
Our family can't wait to finally merge the computer, netflix and TV together.
I just hope the Comcast folks can handle the higher traffic level.

Yes, Sony does want to create their own movie service. So did Microsoft. Eventually they adopted Netflix though.
Please, please, please work with Sony to get Netflix to be a native app on the PS3.

If you have a pc at home this is a great solution in the mean time. I'm using it now. It isn't by any stretch perfect (it only came out this month) but its an incredibly 'good for now' solution. Your netflix watch now queue and some watch now rss feeds show up as stream-able movies under a 'playnow' upnp device in the video icon for the ps3.
I've posted dozens of 'when will you support the ps3' comments under every netflix streaming article in this blog for a while now. if you can deal with spending 30 bucks for the software and the requirement of a windows pc to act as the middleman its pretty good. the ps3 also acts as an incredibly good upscaler for the video. the software also does hulu, nbc, cbs, youtube, espn, cnn, and maybe a few others i've missed. thats a great value add considering the movie offerings on hulu and the new television content you can watch also.
i swear i don't work for them. i just love my gadgets and have been screaming for support on the ps3 for a long time. if i don't have to wait any longer i wont. give it a look if you want. there is also a 14day unrestricted demo before you have to buy.

Why does Netflix ignore the PS3 owners- whoever comes out to compete with Netflix in this matter I will switch to and drop Netflix like a bad habbit. It's obvious that PS3 is the superior platform to play streamed movies- don't know if this hold up is Sony or Netflix fault- but since Netflix has not included Mac I would say its theirs and Microsofts little deal.

I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 and didn't like it so I went back to Internet Explorer 7 and afterwards I went to watch a movie instantly on Netflix and a screen appeared saying I needed to download Microsoft Silverlight so I did and I refreshed the page and it still won't play any movies and I know it downloaded correctly. Is anyone getting HD quality streaming thru the Watch Instantly feature. I have a brand new Samsung 1080P LN46A650 46 inch LCD Touch of Color TV with 120hz and Samsung HT-BD150 5.1 Blue Ray Home Theater System with 24 fps, surround sound and intregrated Netflix, Pandora, and Wi-Fi. After investing all of this money so I could have streaming HD thru Netflix in addition to Blu-ray movies thru the mail, I have yet to get anything better than a worse than a standard DVD picture. It looks more like standard cable on an HD T.V. not even as good as my old DVD player on my HD T.V. The picture with hard copy bluray movies is absolutely amazing, looks almost like 3-D, but I have yet to get anything but garbage when streaming. Does anyone get a bluray HD qaulity streaming picture? If so do you have to hard wire with an ethernet cable to get a 100mbps signal or do you just go with the 54 mbps signal that comes thru Wi-Fi. I am really pissed off that this does not work as advertised. I have road runner business broad band with the fastest residential speed they offer and my Wi-Fi is with a Linksys Wireless N router but still no luck with an HD picture. I do not have internet access hooked up in the room with this TV so I woud have to go thru some extra work to get an ethernet line run into that room in order to get a 100mbps signal with a hard line vs. the wi-fi that I am using now. Would this give me a better chance of HD quality streaming or should I just give up and go back to bluray thru the mail which I still do but I was hoping to supplement that with so streamed movies while I am waiting for films to come in the mail. Anyone getting HD? If so, thru Wi-Fi or ethernet? What type of receiver? Thanks.

Am I the only one who has had no problem with streaming movies on netflix. i like it, the quality is pretty good, infact better than i get with my cable sometimes. so any one haveing trouble with it needs to realize it is them not netflix. also they seem to put new movies on the watch now list. I know they add more older movies but there have been a good bit of newer ones that hit watch instantly the same day the DVD gets released.
