Titles available to watch instantly

Hello. Steve Swasey, here, Catherine Fisher's colleague in Corporate Communications. Following up on Catherine's post, a comment on title availability to watch instantly:

As watching instantly becomes a more prominent part of the Netflix service, our goal is to have all of our streaming content licensed for all of our partner devices. We’re doing well in this area, but it will take some time before we fully achieve that goal. Today, titles regularly come in and out of license and there is a natural ebb and flow to what we have on license at any given point in time. In the case of Xbox 360, a few hundred titles are temporarily unavailable to be streamed via the Xbox game console. Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers’ computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they’ll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly.

  1. I do appreciate the quick response to this issue. I hope this is something that can be hammered out with optimal results for the consumer.

  2. THIS is customer service. Thumbs up.

  3. I hope so too, bad sadly since most of the title affected are Sony titles, I don't think that they will give permission to the competition.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I think it's sad that most if not all of the content is from Sony which is Microsoft competitor. Will someone just tell them money it money it doesn't matter where it's coming from.

    Just my two sense.

  5. Thanks for the heads up XNE launches tomorrow.

  6. Let's be honest and give the details...all Columbia Pictures titles are not available on the 360. Pretty obvious it's their parent company blocking the licensing...Sony.

yes it is all sony fault

  8. What about the ones that say "UNTIL X Date"? Are those going away and if so why?

  9. When will Canada get Netflix?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Xbox 360 should be treated just like other devices. It's probably going to be the biggest device for Netflix soon.

    ReplyDelete
  11. First off, to the person giving "thumbs up" for this "customer service" No. Just no. This isn't a resolution to the problem. All he said was "yup, these movies aren't available. We'd like for them to be in the future, but they're not now." I'd like to be a millionaire in the future, but that's not likely to happen.

This looks bad for Netflix. The public perception is that Netflix is descriminating against the Xbox 360. The average consumer doesn't understand licensing issues, and as such will miss the complexities of this issue.

Furthermore, Netflix needs to grow a pair. I'm sorry, but to allow Sony to discriminate against the 360 is silly. Do all content providers have the right to say their stuff can't be viewed on one particular set top box? What gives? Why allow them to single out the 360, effectively harming YOUR public image?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh, and for the record, I left Netflix a long time ago. I was a little pissed about the Que throttling Netflix engages in, so I dropped the service. I actually came back mostly because of the streaming service becoming available on the 360. If this change is permanent, I'll ditch the service again. See that Netflix? Letting sony push you into something stupid will cost you customers. Just my two cents.

    ReplyDelete
  13. When subscribers from Puerto Rico, a US Territory, are going to be able to stream movies from your service? I would like to use this service on my Xbox 360 but can't do it for now.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love the extra detail provided here.

Is there a way to provide feedback for those of use participating in the silverlight beta?

I have two monitors, and it exits full screen mode whenever I click on something on the other monitor.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I would expect this to take awhile. Sony owns the content in question, so they seem to not want it to be available on the Xbox.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Good thing I watched some of those titles in the past 3 days(on my 360). This is unacceptable to say the least. And for them to do this the night before they become available only adds to it. My question is this, Does netflix have any other devices that you selectively discriminate against? If not I smell something fishy. I am sure that consumer advocates and the BBB will be hearing from plenty of people in the next few days. I will be one.

    ReplyDelete
  17. this sucks, I am a first time netflix member. Just got it for the xbox360 now i see myself canceling it within the next week.

    ReplyDelete
  18. This is bulls_it. Netfix sucks for allowing this type of harassment. I was super positive about Netflix's initiative to push the envelope on digitally distributed content, but gimping specific devices is seriously uncool, and leaves a very bad impression. Who is to say that other Netflix Ready Devices aren't next on the blacklist? If I purchase a device and pay for the services, I (as a customer) should NOT be treated like this.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Does not make sense. I can still watch Columbia Pictures DVDs on my 360. What's the difference?

    ReplyDelete
  20. What a load of crap. You telling me that you got licensing for the other 4 devices you support but forgot about the 360? And only forgot the Sony License? I hope you fix this sooner then later. I've been a netflix subscriber for many years but you are expendable.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Guess this means I'm sticking with Blockbuster instead of going with Netflix until this is resolved :(

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's fucking bullshit if you ask me.

I agree with Josh, Netfix sucks for allowing this type of harassment. WTF!!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why Sony won't work it out with Microsoft over the Xbox 360 is beyond me . . . How many computers are there that stream Netflix right now? Of that number of computers, how many are running Windows?

I don't mean to beat around the bush, but if Sony has that big of a problem with MS, why don't they disable ANY Microsoft product from showing their films? Oh... that's right, they want money.

When will this end so the consumer will stop getting the "short-end of the stick."

    ReplyDelete
  24. I must agree with the others. I dropped blockbuster explicitly for the xbox 360 netflix streaming integration. I find it petty that sony has to block content to the 360 but support streaming on the other devices (roku, tivo, etc.) I hope this gets resolved soon. I almost sold a couple of xbox's today at work just by telling people about the new netflix integration. Netflix please work quickly to resolve this and bring more great content to the instant watch.

  25. What the Geek said,"The average consumer doesn't understand licensing issues, and as such will miss the complexities of this issue." This is true and this includes the Geek.

The titles are Sony's property to license (or not license) to whomever they please, in whatever manner they please. Sony doesn't have to license any of their films to anyone for any purpose. They don't have to put them out on DVD. They can light the prints on fire if they want to. The films are their property to use in any manner they want. In this case, to license in any manner they want. If you are going to be upset at someone, I would start with Sony.

    ReplyDelete
  26. If I were running Microsoft...

I'd stop selling Windows licenses to Sony. Their computer division will die instantly.

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's just yet another example of Sony flexing their muscles and dictating what consumers can and cannot do. I've boycotted Sony ever since their whole CD music rootkit fiasco. They'll never get my money as long as I can help it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Personally, I think everyone might be barking up the wrong tree. I'm not a Netflix subscriber, as of yet, but am very intrigued by the 360 streaming capabilities.

Licensing is licensing. Netflix definitely needs to get this taken care of. But are the same angry people posting blogs like this on Sony's webpages? That's where the angry tongues need to be focused.

  30. For the people saying this is all Sony: Netflix is the one who allowed Sony to be selective. If I were Netflix I would have said all or nothing. I know business makes that hard, but some things are worth it for standing up against unethical situations.

Netflix: Come on out and say it. Call Sony out for this and show some real customer service by supporting your product.

    ReplyDelete
  31. This is ridiculous. I've been a Netflix subscriber for years, and I have been looking forward to the XBox integration for many months. I really hope this is some kind of strange coincidence, and that Sony isn't being a dick.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Be prepared to lose my business and that of many others who just signed up for the first time (or again) because of the new Xbox 360 connectivity. Would have been nice to know your service was crippled considerably before I put my money down again yesterday.

It may be only a "few hundred" titles, but this is one of your major studios, and the lost content is considerably more important to most people than the slew of crappy B movies, etc. that make up the majority of your streaming catalog (might as well be honest with ourselves, right). I'll wait to see how this plays out over the next month or two, but it's a make or break point.

Frankly, I don't care if I can watch those movies on my computer. I am paying for the service because I want to watch them from the comfort of my couch through my home theater.

    ReplyDelete
  33. And here I thought Sony liked making money!

Better go through and add more stuff tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I too just came back to Netflix this past week and it is primarily because of streaming movies on my 360. I barely use my PC and am always on my macbook which can not currently stream movies and i would like to stream them to my TV. I find this a disappointment as all of these movies had been available to watch on the 360 previous to today. I hope this can be resolved quickly because my main use of Netflix will be through streaming to the 360. Otherwise i may just have to leave netflix again

    ReplyDelete
  35. Steve -

Owe up now; communicate to all why Netflix forgot to license the 360. A few hundred titles became NO media content available for ANY 360 user.

    otherwise -

"That's fucking bullshit if you ask me."

doubt you have the cajones to respond, but hey - Netflix was stupid enough to move on Sony's wishes, so anythings possible.

    Best!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Please release Netflix here in the UK we have a terrible video download service at present. Just check the forums on xbox.com or even just seach the net for find hundreds of people asking for this service! With over six millions units sold in Europe it may be a good idea!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Seems to be like Xbox could use its muscle to get a deal struck with some other content company to bring in there movies. If I were netflix i would call sony on this and get more content somewere else and tell sony to go f them self.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I own numerous Sony products including high dollar items like my tv. It was even a difficult choice for me to choose the Xbox 360 over the Playstation 3, something I did because of the better games and capabilities.

As a Sony fan, I find it ironic that they have just pulled their content instead of working to incorporate similar capabilities into the Playstation. If this sticks I can guarantee my next purchases will not be to Sony.

To the people at Netflix, thank you for your quick response. You just gained me as a customer for working with Microsoft to get this service to the Xbox. I already feel comfortable knowing I made a safe choice to go with you, but Sony has definitely lost credibility with me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The general consensus I'm getting from these comments goes something like, "This is complete bullshit!!!" and I have to agree. Not Netflix's fault, but unfortunately it's making me reconsider my membership anyway. Like a lot of people, I just signed up for Netflix for one reason only: the upcoming NXE streaming capability. I realize that the heads of Sony are a bunch of money-grubbing dickheads - I work in the theater industry, we have to jump through hoops with Sony features all the time - but if a service I'm paying for doesn't deliver the product I want, I'm going to cancel that service, no matter whose fault the issue is. Sorry, Netflix, but if you can't work something out with Sony pretty soon, you'll be losing me as well.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You guys seem to think that this move by Sony is so terribly anti-consumer, but you didn't seem at all offended when Microsoft bought up the exclusive console rights to stream Netflix movies. Shutting out the two other competitors. You might have even cheered after hearing it. Suddenly, one of the other guys takes a swing back and now you cry that they're fighting dirty.

Open your eyes. Every exclusive is an anti-consumer tactic to someone. What Sony's doing is no worse than what Microsoft did, if they really wanted a speedy resolution they would have opened the service to PS3 and Wii (if capable) as well.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The activation codes aren't working. No matter what code is generated on the Xbox, netflix.com/activate says "Code invalid"

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm having the code invalid problem too.. Hope it's resolved soon, it's the main thing I was excited about with the NXE update.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Is Sony going to disallow us from watching their movies through Microsoft Windows?

    ReplyDelete
  44. the whole nXBL thing is pretty crap.. I mean.. avatars that are like the Wii in every manner...ugh...be creative...and the only thing I was excited about was Netflix coming through for me but sure enough..."Code Invalid"

    ReplyDelete
  45. So, Sony basically just took their ball and went home. Very mature.

BTW, I'm getting the "code invalid" error too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. calling the help line, wait time over 30 mins, ill post back if I find anything helpful from them (doubt it)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Reading other forums; it sounds like phone support is giving some crappy "just keep trying to activate" answer.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Well I can't say I'm suprised... will hang on the line for confirmation though, its already been...15 minutes on the wait line with this really bad musical hold but whatever... still trying but don't push "Get new code" rapidly in anger because you get a popup saying netflix is down and it freezes box

    ReplyDelete
  49. Candace with phone support was actually pretty nice, gave the Occam's Razor answer... Everyone's trying at the exact same time so servers are overloaded. They suggest every thirty minutes that you log back in and try it but rapid fire succession WILL NOT help you get in any faster and will probably worsen the situation

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thanks Josh and Candace, I'll be trying later tonight then.

  51. If Netflix's licensing terms with the movie studios gives the studios power to dictate which hardware manufacturers are allowed to show their movies and which aren't then Netflix licensing terms are giving the studios too much power. This is the equivalent of Sony licensing their movies to HBO but saying that DirectTV subscribers are not allowed to view Sony's movies on HBO.

    ReplyDelete
  52. gonzilla,

No no, I DO understand that Sony has the right to do w/ their licenses as they wish - however, netflix dropped the ball somewhere along the line. They could have attempted to work out a license w/ all the studios that allows for streaming of their movies via Netflix SOFTWARE on any piece of hardware. In such a case, the license would apply to the software regardless of what device it was running on. Instead, apparently, Netflix is setting up licensing deals on a device by device basis - silly.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I got up this morning excited to download NXE and then head over to the PC and sign up for Netflix; however, due to these issues I think I'll be holding off until these "licensing issues" are resolved. In this situation Sony is like a kid at the playground who is taking their ball and going home.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I just signed up to Netflix because of the 360 service. I hope you get this fixed otherwise I will be curious to see how many other companies try to block content of devices. It's a bad road to travel down.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Sigh.

I will very quickly dump Netflix and I'll definitely write Sony off when considering all future purchases. I've never returned to Circuit City after the DIVX fiasco and I'll be glad to hold the same line here.

Get this fixed or you'll be losing plenty of customers and will be facing a building PR inconvenience at exactly the time that nobody can afford it.

    Geeeez, guys (Netflix and Sony).

    ReplyDelete
  56. TO Sony:
Thanks for blocking access to Columbia Pictures Content to the Xbox 360. Its now made my decision on what HDTV to buy this Christmas. It definitely will NOT be a SONY I was leaning towards buying. Ill go with Samsung instead. Thanks!!
    To NetFlix:
This is BAD. You need to fix this asap. After my 3 months is up I will not stay unless this is resolved. Your on notice!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Anything that prevents me from watching Ghostbusters is an absolute travesty. FAIL. FAIL on both the part of Sony and Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Please extend your service to Puerto Rico. I get abc.com; itunes USA store; hulu.com but not netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  59. jeez, so much anger. this isn't a netflix issue. this is just sony saying "screw you" to microsoft. i honestly don't have high hopes about it getting resolved, but if it does, it'd be pretty fantastic.

on another note: anyone know how to see which instant watch titles are available in HD?

    ReplyDelete
  60. This sucks! With Sony it's just one big FU after another. I'm never buying Sony products again.

    ReplyDelete
  61. This is so unbelievably short-sighted on Sony's part. Rather than give customers a service that has received tons of positive press and expose them to their holdings (movies, in this case) they'd rather say, "my ball...and you can't play with it so there!). I guess their rationale is if we don't get more money for these movie titles, we'll hold them back and make the customers get them another way. Hey, Sony, how does your model stand up consumers getting these movies via illegal downloads?

  64. don't know if anyone will be able to help me with this but i tried xbox customer service and they had no idea what i was talking about...

When i went into my netflix app on the xbox 360 a page came up that had a code on it that i needed to put in my netflix account but before i could put it in my account that screen was gone and i didn't remember the password/code...is there any way for me to retrieve that code so i can sync my xbox to my netflix account?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Why does NetFlix hate Xbox360 owners??? This isn't right! If I owned a stupid NetFlix partnered Roku box I could stream the movies that I'm not allowed to watch with a NetFlix partnered Xbox360. What the heck?!?!

There should be a lawsuit in this somewhere. I'll be cancelling my NetFlix subscription if this isn't fixed ASAP!!! Quit discriminating, NetFlix!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. There've been several comments to the effect of, "If you can't show these titles to the Xbox, you shouldn't show them to any other device."

I think it's interesting seeing comments asking about Puerto Rico and Canada, particularly in light of these others.

I wonder, do the folks crying out about this think that if Netflix can't deliver a movie to everyone it should deliver the movie to no-one? If Netflix can't deliver to Puerto Rico, it shouldn't deliver to Florida. If Netflix can't deliver to Canada, it should not deliver to the U.S.

It seems ludicrous. Every company does what it can to make money. If a company ever figures out how to make money by not having a customer and to make incrementally more money by having one more non-customer then that company will soon hold all the money in the world and do no business at all. Absent that fantastic business model, it seems obvious that if Netflix isn't doing an obvious business, Netflix probably doesn't think it can make money at it (yet).

Maybe Sony thinks it will make more money this way. Maybe Microsoft thinks it will make more money this way. Who can say? Not, I suspect, any of the commenters here.

    ReplyDelete
  67. From a consumer's perspective, this is a terrible deal.

You're required to pay $50/year on top of your Netflix subscription, for the privilege of using the service on the 360.

What you get, for that additional fee, is a smaller library of content.

As a consumer, I don't care who's at fault, or what licensing deals exist. It makes more sense to buy a Roku box for $100, than pay a fee for less content than you already have access too.

Also, the "ebb and flow" of content came as a complete surprise to your customers, as in: "Why is Dexter no longer in my queue?" being asked when they log in to watch shows. This is really a communication failure, and very disappointing.

As a result, I won't be upgrading my subscription to accommodate my 360, despite my overall positive experience with Netflix through the years.

Your customers should be your first priority in your negotiations, stand up for them.

    ReplyDelete
  68. And just like that Sony has made sure I never pay for one of their movies that I decide to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Because there's less film availability via Xbox360, do we get a discount? Will Netflix slap Sony on the hand and change how much they are reaping profit off of Netflix? Just because I no longer can run certain movies via Xbox360 doesn't mean I'm running out to buy the movie or buy a PS3. And yes, this really looks bad on Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  70. "A few hundred titles" Please be honest with your customers and admit that they're only SONY films. Way to cave in, Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  71. What I am curious is about is why a bunch of showtime shows are no longer available to watch instantly. Was watching brotherhood on my computer, and now it is not in my queue anymore sadly. Anybody have any idea what happened?

    ReplyDelete
  72. We need "watch instantly" PC or Xbox Streaming service on Puerto Rico, how is that you can Mail the titles but you cant let us play them? I dont get it. Please :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. So i can watch a sony movie on my Microsoft Windows but not on my Microsoft 360...sony is a bunch of greedy jerks

    ReplyDelete
  74. Streaming we are not...

Signed up and going to cancel. movie selection is worse than most public libraries.

I was interested in netflixs thru Xbox 360 - it runs thru the surround system.

    Move selection process is week.

Way to fall on your face Netflix.... there is no excuse - poor rollout.

    good bye....

    ReplyDelete
  75. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED!!!. I left blockbuster online a few weeks ago in anticipation of the Netflix/360 marriage. I'd been a online member for years. Come to find the limited titles is terrible and I don't buy into the quick resolution. I may drop as well as others and come back when it's resolved. If they had all titles Netflix would be better than blockbuster. Without it, they just simply are not.
    TWO THUMBS DOWN

  76. I really wanted to see Dexter episodes instantly. Why is that not available? Is that Sony too? Other Showtime titles are available. THIS SUCKS BAD!!!
What a tease. All I've been hearing for months is no more discs the future of video is almost here. Stream this.... what old movies.... Starz titles wow. It's Wed the worst night of TV and all I want is to watch of movie and there isn't even anything good to watch. How could this be! Is every new release a Sony title? I think further explanation is deserved and some refunding is in order!!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Ha, this is funny. If Xbox pays money under the table to any game developer so only Microsoft will get exclusive content, then everybody things it’s so cool that "stupid PS3 owners don’t get it, ha-ha".
    - Taste your own medicine Xbox!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I tried to use the xbox as an extender to see if more titles would work. After a long riduculous process I found it didn't work and the quality was more poor. This is so stupid I can't believe this Netflix/360 vs. Sony fiasco......
Is it really Sony or are people just writing that? Did they just want more money and Netflix said no??? Great job on someone's part. This is like Timewarner not carying the NFL network.

    ReplyDelete
  79. wow, the tech support guys are real a-holes when you call in. I waited 30 minutes on the phone and got some arrogant punk blaming my computer for its inability to play netflix videos. This in spite of the fact that every single other video known to man will play on my Presario 6000 with the drivers I have. Cancelling my account for greencine. F Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Why is it was when I browse through the "Watch Instantly" videos online, not all the videos show up? For example, I browse Showtime, or TV Drama, and "DEXTER" doesn't show up, but if I run a search for "DEXTER" it is available for instant viewing.... I noticed the same issue for seasons 1-3 of "The Office". I browse through every category it might be in, but it isn't there. Yet, I search for it, and it is...

    ReplyDelete
  81. Re: ^
Ok, "DEXTER" isn't available for instant viewing anymore, but it used to be and never showed up in the Instant Viewing categories. "The Office" example still works, though. Search for it and its there, browse and its not...

  82. Fuck you guys for discriminating against deaf people and not including closed captioning / subtitles. Expect a class action law suit bitches.

    ReplyDelete
  83. All you need to do is to stop buying sony stuff -- especially the PS3. If their console died out, they wouldn't be an xbox competitor. You can bet that they would be happy to let their movies play on xbox then. :)

Netflix should withhold any streaming capability to the PS3 until Sony stops this garbage.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I'm still confused. Some of what I'm reading says that we're only missing a few hundred titles. Is this correct? Because if it is then this still sucks. I want to watch any movie available on Netflix through the mail on my 360. You would think Netflix would push towards this so they didn't deal with the cost of the mail, envelopes discs etc...
    Is Dexter made through Sony???
If this is resolved will new releases that come out on Tuesdays be available???
On another note - F Sony. I'd been a Sony supporter for years and switched to XBOX360 when I found out how much the PS3 was going to cost. No I hate Sony and will never buy another sony product. I'm more than happy with 360 (and their customer service-which you will need RROD!) and Samsung makes much better TV's / DVD players.
I encourage all to go to the Sony website and voice their displeasure.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I agree with the one above. What good are 12,000 titles when 11,900 of them suck. Where are the new releases. It seems Netflix is only trying to get a few hundred missing titles. I want new releases. If I wanted Starz I'd order for the $3 it costs. Complete garbage. Netflix pulled a fast one.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I want some answers and want them now! As a paying consumer I (and all that pay) deserve that much!
I checked a episode of the office and the quality was great, no complaints there. I watched some cheezy movie (Brookly Rules - by the way great accent Freddie)and the quality was disgusting. I thought I was watching a bootleg from some street vendor where someone is using a cam in the theater.

Maybe Blockbuster is working a deal with Sony!

Netflix YOU HAVE BLOWN IT. Agree with the comments just above this, where are the new releases?
You should have held back on the date until this was worked out. Better to be late and deliver than be on time with a plate of sh!t.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Really? I eagerly waited all this time to watch Amadeus and 90210 Season 1 on my Xbox? Really? Suggestion, maybe you should have ironed all this crap out BEFORE you rolled this out.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I am giving it a week, and if it is not resolved I am cancelling! If I wanted to deal with the mail movies I would have signed up prior.. The 360 stream is the ONLY reason that I joined! Record month in sign ups and also record month in cancellations! Where is the customer service now? How about a response?!?!?

  89. How about this; tell me what these movies have in common:
    9. No Country for old men 2007
    18. Illusionist 2006
    41. Gone Baby Gone 2007
    71. Wild Hogs 2007
    84. Dan in Real Life 2007
    86. Enternal Sunshine... 2004
    95. National Treasure 2 2007
    100. March of the "FRIGGIN???" Penguins 2004

What is this list you ask.....
Well it's the only movies available to stream that are from Netflix top 100 movies. EIGHT FRIGGIN % of the top 100 is available!!! WTF The #'s to the left is their rank and take special note to the year or for any movie fan would notice the point; non of them are new.

  90. To the geniuses that are complaining about the fact that all DVD titles that Netflix carries aren't available to watch instantly: you clearly didn't look into the service before jumping in. They're pretty straight forward about the selection being limited.

This doesn't make the sudden pulling of Columbia titles a total FAIL on Sony and Netflix's behalf though.

    Boycott Sony.

  91. I was excited to see I could stream Netflix movies to my 360, the only disappointing thing is you basically need a HD tv in order to watch the damn movies. Seriously people what the fuck is up with that. They should have the ability to stream either as HD or as Standard. I am very disappointed

  95. Ok I think I get it. This Sony thing will still clear up. This isn't really the issue. The issue is it's still a tired old crappy selection. The Sony thing will straighten out but the new releases still won't be there. Was I the only one thinking I'd be able to watch a new release every Tuesday over my xbox and not have to use discs through the mail anymore? I've either seen all the movies available or they just suck.
What a serious let down. I guess as one blogger noted maybe I jumped in to fast but I CANT be the only one that thought this. What will it take to get new titles available? Is that going to happen soon? Can anyone answer me???

  97. RE: Finding Watch Instantly movies offered in HD. Select the Watch Instantly Tab, then select Genres..HD.

I was very excited to find out that HD offerings are in the works, however I have not been able to verify these movies. I selected an HD movie but it did not stream in HD. There was nothing indicated in my queue that it was HD. The HD Genre tab states that you must have sufficient bandwidth which I think I do have (I can receive HD from all major networks).

  98. I'm having great difficulty watching instantly. I am constantly interrupted by the "your internet connection has slowed, adjusting for playback," routine.

Whenever this happens I check my DSL speed and it is always unchanged at 10mb/s or better. I have no trouble watching HD streaming video anywhere else. I really don't think it has anything to do with my internet connection.

Anybody have any solutions to this problem?

  99. The interface leaves much to be desired to Netflix. The interface requires you to add items to the que from a desktop PC. There should be a method to browse available instant titles from the XBOX interface. The lack of this makes it pretty terrible, actually. You can't do anything with it unless you run to a PC. Boring. It should be easy enough to browse based on the DVD Cover shots, just like the website. Hell, if it'd let you chose a genre or whatever. Because this is pretty lame.

  100. re: Russ

"Netflix should withhold any streaming capability to the PS3 until Sony stops this garbage."

Actually, they're withholding streaming capability to the PS3 because Microsoft bought the exclusive rights. Not that Netflix hasn't been in bed with MS for a while, mind you. Since that didn't inconvenience you personally, that's okay, right? Now, all of a sudden, the tears start flowing and Sony's the bad guy because you can't get everything you want when you want it. Hilarious.

Keep up the whining. It's good for a laugh.

  101. Titles available to watch instantly? Absolutely worthless. You can't make it through a film without constant interruption because. Unlimited my *@$%. I haven't made it all the way through a film in months.

I've Googled the problem and read pages and pages. It isn't worth it. This feature is non-existent.

  102. Wow. I came to this blog in to tell you how much my friends and I LOVE LOVE LOVE using Netflix on on XBox. What a bunch of angry whiney people.

Hey Netflix, thanks. You guys rock, seriously. I have watched more movies in the past 2 days than in the entire month previous.
No Country for Old Men? Win. Pirates of the Carribean? Win. Every episode of Heroes ever? Win. 30 Rock? Win. Hundreds of documentaries? Awesome.
I hope you fix this thing with the titles we can't watch, but even if you don't... this thing is incredible. Thank you!

  103. Netflix,

I do hope, for your sake that you're not discriminating against your customers. I do thank you for the response and understand that negotiations could still be in the works; therefore, giving you the right to not having a straight answer, as of yet.

I was very excited to hear of the Netflix integration with the 360. So much so, I spent a whole evening putting movies in queue. To my dismay I've seen many disappear from my Xbox and marked 'not compatible with the Xbox 360' on your website. I do not want to switch between my computer and Xbox 360 to watch two different movies. For lack of a better analogy, it feels like 'segregation' to me. This also impedes the 'Movie Comfort Zone', as I'd like to call it. This includes, but is not limited to, getting excited about a movie or show to get into, so you make sure to turn on the surround sound, set everything up just right and gather your snacks, etc... This is now your zone. No interruptions. Just you and the story you hope to be enveloped in.

On a side note: I do understand that not all movies can be streamed 'yet'. I do hope, in this regard, that you are working on it.

Likewise, as stated before from others, integrating the choosing of the media via Xbox, should be of utmost priority for Netflix and Microsoft. It is good business for both and and shouldn't be any reason not to, as Xbox had that option before the new Xbox interface change.

    To Everyone,

There are many, from 'paupers' to 'kings' that want the best quality from there product without discrimination and segregation

Why keep the film/television medias separate? Aren't TV, Movies, Documentaries, etc... a form of human expression and the free spirit? Why shouldn't any one of us experience all of this?

Share all media, I say! If it came down to every media service having all media, so be it! Let the services duke it out, for better prices, product quality, customer service, etc... That's good business and answering consumers' wants that haven't been there.

For those businesses that do not believe they get enough complaints to change how they do things? Know that for every complaint written, there are numerous other consumers upset over the same issues. Consider, as well, that not everyone likes writing. I am not a huge fan myself; however, I felt compelled to comment on this absurd occurrence

    To Sony,

If you are reading this: which I doubt, because many are aware of your lack of customer service and/or auditory capabilities with what consumers actually want, then congratulations! You've taken a first step towards the road of good business/listening.

I am almost without words with your reaction to the Xbox 360playing your licensed Movie/TV media. Hello! More money? Isn't that what you want? More so, consumers. From creating a bad online experience, hardware that steers away many software developers and now taking away from your customers? What were/are you thinking?

I and many others will not have anything to do with Sony and it's constituents until you learn!

For everyone that read this, I thank you! This comment was a bit winded and I do apologize, but hope you get something from what was said:)

    Thank You,

    Psyph3r

  104. Wow, so big bad Sony took it's ball and went home, huh? That's a way to endear yourself to the market. Good job.

Sony is in for a rough ride. Their consumer electronics are WAAAAAY overpriced, not any better than the competition, and extremely poorly designed. Note to TV designers: STOP PUTTING SPEAKERS ON THE SIDES OF WIDESCREEN TVS, MORONS.

Now they've gone out of their way to make it difficult for someone to watch a movie on their home theater who has a 360. Genius. Don't they realize those same people probably have a computer hooked up to the same network and will probably watch it on their NON-SONY pc? If I were Netflix, I'd tell them to POUND SAND.

I was honestly considering buying a PS3 for the blu-ray player. Screw that. I will not buy a Sony product or watch a Sony movie until the remove noggins from their rears.

What a complete bunch of buffoons?!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Ahh, Dan. Nothing says you mean business like threatening an empty boycott! Gosh, and didn't you just accuse Sony of being immature?

Last time I checked nobody threatened to boycott Microsoft because they locked down the exclusive console rights to Netflix and left the other two major players in the dark. If I were Sony and Netflix wanted to put my movies on 360 after making a deal to shut my console out, I might be tempted to tell them to POUND SOUND.

    What a buffoon.

When I tried to activate the code from the Xbox, it told me "You're a damn spic, from a freakin' island in the caribbean and we don't like you, so you can't stream"... So I immediately cancelled. What a way to lose business.

    ReplyDelete
  110. yeah, what everyone else said. Sony, your being an ass. Netflix, you might have mentioned this before everyone signed up, and you better effing fix it before you lose a bunch of business. Don't let Sony bring you down with them. I was seriously going to buy a PS3 before this (all be it when they had some games that made it worth the purchase), now i'm thinking of boycotting sony. And one more thing...Sony, you're being an ass. I'm a gamer, we'll buy your damn console when you have some exclusive titles that make it worth the 500 bucks. ports aren't enough...you must have games to sell a gaming console, and resistence 2 didn't cut it (according to my PS3 friends). so stop being an ass, make some games and partake of the royalties offered by Netflix making a good business move with Microsoft.

  111. Dear Sirs,

I applaud your recent integration with Microsoft XBOX 360. The partnership between the two companies has increased the usefulness of both companies products dramtically. My entire family enjoys the ability to stream NetFLix movies via the XBOX. I also know several people that have XBOX 360 consoles that have said they will reactivated their old NetFLix accounts or open a new account to take advantage of the streaming video via the XBOX.

I became aware today that several titles (5 in my queue currently) that cannot be streamed to my XBOX but can be streamed to my PC. My understanding is this is due to Sony (Columbia Pictures) blocking the streaming to Microsoft devices.

I for one am outraged that Sony would exhibit this type of behavior. I am also outraged that NetFLix would go along with it. In this modern era where every company is building partnerships and talking about open standards I think it's rediculous for a company like Sony to pull a stunt like this. Whats next? You can only ship me a Columbia Studios movie if I can prove I have a Sony DVD player?

In my opinion as a NetFlix shareholder I feel NetFlix should take a stand. Make the following statement and make sure it gets publicized: "Either we have the ability to rent/stream your movies to ALL users, or we won'y rent any Columbia movies"

The current situation leads consumers to believe there is a problem with NetFlix or Microsoft.

    ReplyDelete
  112. "In this modern era where every company is building partnerships and talking about open standards I think it's rediculous for a company like Sony to pull a stunt like this."

Are you really so deluded? Did the part about "Microsoft buying exclusive rights to console Netflix player" slip by you? Don't talk about partnerships and open standards. It's ridiculous for Microsoft to pull a stunt like blocking out both of their competition from the Netflix game. They're the ones who started playing dirty.

If you're mad at anybody, be mad at Microsoft for trying to shut out all the competition with money. The only way to solve this problem satisfactorily for everyone is to bring the Netflix player to all consoles. Wonder how long that exclusivity deal is good for? I hope these problems last the duration of it.

    ReplyDelete
  113. All I would like to have is some time frame when all the movies will be available on Xbox 360. So I know when to subscribe again because this is absolutely ridiculous how awful the selection is. Please get more movies quicker and this will be the best feature for the 360 or netflix if this gets done.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I got it! Here is the solution! Xbox will start using Blueray disc on the 360 and sony will lift the licensing issues...

    Bingo!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Its sad most of you don't understand what a license problem is. Its not something they can ignore and tell sony corp to kiss off, to stream movies they don't have a license for is ILLEGAL. Sony just loves to write its licenses exceptionally stringently. They have to write out a new one for the 360, which as of the time of this posting seems to have been done. Sony wants the money any way it can get it.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Thank you Netflix and Sony Pictures for resolving the movie issues for 360:)

  119. So eventually, What they are saying is

"When we can get liscenses, all videos you can have shipped to your house, you will be able to stream via computer or Xbox"

Is this what other people are getting or am I missing something?

And is the other problem that the simply CANT get liscenses for some movies?

  120. Hey is there a location to leave feedback on Mac viewing? A place to report problems? I've had a few aspect ratio problems with Silverlight... recently while watching Cashback on a Mac I was experiencing intermittent aspect ratio shifts, it would go from 2:39 to a stretched 16:9... my friends have had similar problems. Let me know!

  125. I would really like to have streaming support with the ps3. I think its unfair that you let microsoft buy the exclusive rights to have streaming. Seems to me you care more about money then your customers. Since you are siding with microsoft I am going to cancel my account and I will tell others to do the same. It looks like you care more about money anyway instead of keeping me as a customer. Sorry netflix your greed has lost yet another customer. I will make sure my friends and I switch to Blockbuster. If and I mean IF you start supporting ps3 as a streaming device then I might consider coming back and that is a big if.

  127. i'd like to request a feature for Watch Instantly movies. I have a PC in my living room connected to my TV, so I really want to use this feature. I have also a Logitech miniNovo keyboard/mouse, which I use to control the computer wirelessly. When I'm on the couch though it's hard to see the moving listings and it's also slow to navigate the website in Firefox or IE. The stylesheet/layout, etc simply doesnt map to a tv layout.

My question is, can there be a site design just for people using the webpage like me? I need big text, minimal whitespace, no left-right/up/down to worry about (ie all data should fit on one screen). Something like a media portal user interface...

    please!

  128. I agree that Netflix needs to grow a pair. I would suspend content from Netflix mail also until the issue is resolved. When Sony starts missing its revenue then the issue will be resolved.

  131. The movie selection is horrible for Xbox which is the only reason why we decided to sign up with Netflix. My younger brother and I were looking at the selection and he hardly knew any of the movies being that they were either old or just bad. Now it’s a little exaggerated saying they are all horrible but nothing that is going to keep me in on a weekend or even a week night which means I will only watch it when I am extremely bored. After this free month I’m canceling my account, along with two other friends I know who feel the same way.

  133. After more than 2 months of Netflix and XBox Live, I'm happy. My internet provider (cable) sometimes slows down, but Netflix picks right back up.

I canceled my cable TV service a few days after starting Netflix.

Netflix and XBox is $45 cheaper than my cable service. Imagine that! The cost difference will have paid for the XBox in less than 5 months!

I don't understand cable... how can it be so expensive compared to Netflix and XBox??? They have commercials... shouldn't that make cable TV free just like Google?

With Netflix I don't have commercials, I can catch up with long running series by queuing old episodes, I don't have commercials, Netflix and Xbox are $45 cheaper than cable in Pensacola, there are no commercials, I can screen out shows I don't want my children to watch, and there are no commercials.

I haven't pulled down a torrent of a movie since getting Netflix. No need to, Netflix is faster.

    Thanks guys!

Please add more modern shows and movies.

  136. Customer Service,

I recently signed up for Netflix premium service because they offer a fairly comprehensive service including the ability to watch movies instantly through either my XBox 360 or our new Roku video device. I purchased the service and the Roku device as a gift for my wife who is deaf and really enjoys watching movies.

We first tried the XBox 360 and found that there was not button for subtitles, after we connected the Roku we found the same problem. We spent several hours trying to figure out what was wrong and eventually discovered that although the Roko and XBox 360 are capable of decoding subtitles Netflix video streams did not include the necessary data.

We did notice that foreign films had the Subtitle data encoded directly in the feed (open captioning). Our question is this… Would Netflix be willing to create a deaf/hard of hearing instant queue section that includes open captioning in the same way that foreign films are captioned? Open captioning does not require any decoding and does not effect bandwidth because the captioning is overlaid directly on the movie itself. My wife and I watch open caption movies at the theater on special days and this would be great if Netflix adopted the same approach. This may be something that could be done quickly while Netflix works on a more streamlined solution.

This is what the open caption looks like on the Roku box playing the foreign move "The Orphanage"

    Roku Subtitles

Please forward this idea to the folks at Netflix who are working on this issue.

There are a lot of people in the deaf/hard of hearing community who are very interested in how Netflix is handling this. We would really like to see some progress soon. This might be a way for Netflix to show support for this community while Netflix works toward a more streamlined solution.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Sincerely,

    Loren

But since SOMEONE at this address has previously used a 'free trial' (I have no clue, I live in a rental) I am consdidered a 'returning' customer, therefore cannot use the free trial. When I called the extremely "arrogant" customer (no) service person says: consider if people in a family repeat this! So what about rentals. "Tough". Netflix has become too big ... it NEEDS to FAIL. It has reached a level where it is beginning to ignore common marketing sense ... so what if 2-3-4-5 people in a family take a free TRIAL ... by the time they do that you KNOW they are HOOKED.
