Netflix Partners with TiVo
Continuing with partner news, we’re pleased to announce TiVo as our latest partner. In December, TiVo Series3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL subscribers who are also Netflix subscribers will be able to stream over 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes from Netflix to their TV. We’re starting testing with several thousand TiVo owners now and we will let you know when the capability is broadly available in December.

This is fantastice news! 4 (or is it 5?) years in the making, I'm sooo happy you and TiVo are going to do this.
I commented on the other thread that I wanted this on my TiVo. Glad to see that great minds think alike! :-P
Awesome!!! I'm so happy to hear about this. I was going to spend $400 on a Samsung or a LG blue-ray disc with Netflix streaming capability. Now I can save that money and wait until the blue-ray players drop in price (or go with the Sony ones for Thanksgiving).
Looks like I'll be moving my Roku box to a different TV.
Thank you for adding more and more options, but please do not forget about Playstation 3! At least tell us in this blog if we can excpect PS3 support in the coming year, or if we should look for alternative. Many of us who use your Blu ray rental serivce, use PS3 as the only media box for TV, even without DVD player.
I would be more than willing to be a beta tester for both this service and the mac client. I use the Tivo HD and have both an Intel iMac and an Intel Macbook. Netflix's decision to offer streaming to both of these devices along with offering HD content has attracted me to sign up for the service. Thank you.
This is great news! Now what would be even better is if we could set the quality level of the instant viewing. For those of us who dont have great internet speeds and are happy to wait 5 mins to buffer a movie before watching it would love it if we could enjoy the movies with better clarity. While not all the devices are capable of supporting this TiVo would be very capable and I think this would make for a great feature.
When are you going to have a Media Center plugin?
I agree very strongly about wanting the ability to use additional client-side storage space (like the TiVo hard drive) as a larger buffer so that, by choosing to wait longer before watching, one can get consistently high quality playback even with lower Internet speeds (or, in my case, other Internet users competing to eat up the usually-fast speeds available.)
Will this be possible.?
I've been wanting this for some time. It always appeared to be a natural fit. Now, two of my all-time favorite services will be working together. I had just purchased an HD TIVO (I'd had a Series 1 TIVO for about 8 years), and this announcement, as much as anything else, makes me so happy that I "upgraded." Keep up the good work.
Will closed captions be available through this service when it rolls out? It's not currently available over the Internet, although closed captions are available in all of the source material (the DVDs) to begin with.
This would make the difference between us upgrading from Series 2 when/if it happens.
Any hope for a Series 2 owner? I have one TiVo HD and two Series 2s. Would LOVE to be able to stream Netflix to the 2s!

What is Tivo Series 3? All I see on their site is Series 2 or HD. I don't have an HD TV or HD service. What Tivo should I get to be able to use it and Netflix (when available)?
Anyway to throw my hat into the testing phase?
Is there any way to get added to the beta test? I'm of course very excited about this development, and would not mind to spend some extra time watching movies to get the bugs out :)
Hey, don't forget about us PS3'ers out there. Don't really want to blow the money on a Roku box which kinda looks rinky-dink when I've got the good ol' PS3 there that's capable of such things......and yet there's that good ol' saying: "Wish in one hand, and crap in another"
If there are future tests, I am in too. This will be a great asset to being a Netflix customer.
Series 2 TiVos don't have the hardware to decode the video stream from Netflix, so it will probably never be seen on those machines.
That's the skinny over on the TiVo forums anyway.

This is a great business decision for both companies. Tivo needs more unique content and Netflix needs to fend off other download sources that might cause people to drop them altogether. And being unlimited is really nice, too.

I have wanted this for years and upgraded to the Series 2 a year ago in hopes this Netflix thing would finally happen....now, it won't work on my S2...and I have to drop HUNDREDS on a Series 3? BAH.
Make it work for Series 2 Tivos and you've got me for life...or buy back my Series 2 at 45% of what I paid for it and I'll consider upgrading to a S3...

I bought one a few months ago and have not regretted it. I record most of the HD shows over the air and the picture is great. Having Netflix is going to be great. Now if they would only get working on Hulu...
Is my advent calendar now a netflix/tivo countdown calendar? When the heck is coming out? The wait is killing me. Ahhh!
Oooooh, now I am really thinking this is coming; my box just reported a new software update that has put the link for streaming media on the TiVo Central screen ... and with great anticipation I clicked.
But sigh, no NetFlix yet.
I have found the link on NetFlix where you can enter the activation code for a NetFlix ready device.

When? It's December!
Streaming Netflix through Series 2 would be the only reason for me to keep my TiVo service. My Comcast DVR completely replaces all of my DVR needs.
Come Feburary the Series 2 Tivo's become virtually a doorstop. If Tivo is not going to write code to do netflix on the Series 2 can someone write a hack to do so or even better write a hack to stream Netflix and Hulu and YouTube at the same time. Thanks.
What happens in Feb.?
Over the air broadcasting ends in feb, but the series 2s will still work with cable, satellite, or a converter box.
I want that Netflix feature, though....
The codec VC-1 and the inability to decode it sounds like a good excuse, but software could decode it as well...
I could fire up my 1998 AMD K6-2 350Mhz CPU then download the latest browser with all the updates and go to Netflix and watch streaming video...
Yeah it may take time with an S2 you might have to set it and forget it but I'd be happy with that...
I'm not buying a S3 & when my service plan is up in a year Tivo's gone with it.

Now you just need to be hooked into Tivo's Universal Search, so I can look up netflix movies from the Tivo UI!
I have a series 2 Toshiba TIVO (TX20). I have Netflix membership and I want to use the live streaming feature but it is not available on sereis 2. Is that a hardware issue or just TIVO's decision to not enable it.
