Netflix now wider, more personalized

This morning we launched a few changes to the website.

The homepage has a completely new design. It has larger box shots and shows your recent activity so you can see at a glance what we've received or shipped. The movie selection and rows are personalized, meaning that they're responsive to your ratings and rentals - they'll change over time if/as your interests and tastes change. We've included explanations of why we are showing those particular movies, and making it a little easier to rate genres and sub-genres directly on the page - so you don't have to dig through the site to tell us that you love (or hate) Action Thrillers, for example.

If you click on Browse Instant, you'll see that we've carried the new design into that section as well. We hope that will make it easier to find movies and TV shows to watch instantly. These rows are also personalized and responsive, just like on the homepage.

Overall, the whole site is now a little wider so you'll see that most of the pages have a little more white space.

The Queue has an updated look, but the functionality is mostly the same, although a few things have changed slightly in design or placement. [Note for HD/Blu-ray enabled users: there's a bug and the format column isn't showing - this will be fixed in the next few days. We're also working on another bug that is causing some of you to not see recommendations or predicted ratings.]

We think these changes will make it easier for you to find movies you'll love. It's a work in progress. Take a look, and let us know what you think.

The wider format is okay... but I would prefer the option of a plain table that I can filter by genre, sub genre, year, rating, etc. For an example, look at an excel spreadsheet filtered list. I DON'T need (or want) to see the cover image. Simple text display would be fine.

netflix suchs assholes now. No service

It makes no difference that the new releases page is now gone. You won't get them from NF anyway. I've been waiting over a month for some of the titles at the top of my queue. I've been a customer for over 2 years, and NF sends new releases to the new accounts in favor of the loyal customers. Their new "throttling" algorithms are intended to penalize people who watch "too many" movies, even though their adds say "unlimited rentals". A clear case of false advertising. i hate them now...they suck.

kevin said...

I just read most of the comments on this blog. I'm surprised by the reactions of the other customers.

Netflix doesn't give a rats ass about the loyal customer.

1. Has their been any response from NF concerning the comments posted? No.
2. RU really surprised they took away the New Releases page? They don't have enuf to go around so they don't want you to add them to your queue.
3. They let newer customers "cut" in line for movies that others have had in their queue for far longer.

All said, Netflix only cares that they get their money. Their view is that if you don't like it, cancel. There are enuf unaware saps out their waiting to be new joinees and pay them their $. they just don't care about service, customer loyalty, or your overall satisfaction with the way they do business.

I'm cancelling and joining (gulp) blockbuster, At least they have a new releases page with "oh my god can you believe it"...actual new releases.

OK so I just checked my queue. Netflix is jerking me around AGAIN!!!

on Monday my queue said "your next available DVD will be shipped on Tuesday.

On tues it changed to wed.
On wed it changed to thurs.
Today it's thurs, next shipment is now friday.
Tomorrow it will say monday (no shipping over the weekend).

So the turn around time is what...a week and a half. Ridiculous!!!!
I could have rented 5 movies from video store, and watched all of them in the same amount of time for NF to get off their ass and send me the G*d damned DVD's that I am paying for as part of their service.

I used to love netflix, now i am so frustrated with their tactics I can't take any more. BYE!!!!!

All this can be ascribed to Netflix taking their customers for granted. All these changes are calculated, and are designed to dupe us into taking movies they have high stocks in. They look at us not as partners, but as mindless cattle they can manipulate.

They obviously don't respond to their customers, and in fact, I doubt they even listen or care as long as the money keeps flowing in. Therefore, as subscribers, the only thing you can do to effect change is to have an effect on their profit.

I can think of two ways to do that...

1) If you are the type of subscriber that returns movies ASAP, you are exactly the customer Netflix WANTS to quit and go to Blockbuster. Continue as a customer and keep turning around as many movies as you can. If you stay, it actually hurts Netflix.

If you are the type of customer that has, say the 3 a month plan, but you only actually watch 5-6 a month, then you are the customer they don't want to leave. They are counting on you being too lazy, or passive to switch to Blockbuster or GreenCine. If you leave, it actually hurts Netflix.

2) Call their customer service often to complain. I doubt they really care what you have to say, but tying up their employees with constant complaints is costly to them. That will get their attention.

My personal crusade has been to bring back the "Releasing This Week" page. I find it astonishing that Netflix would actually PREFER that I go to Blockbuster to see what new movies are available. Doesn't sound like a company you would want to buy stock in these days.

I really hate the "If you Enjoyed..." section at the top of the intro page. You know what I have enjoyed. So why put up this page of random films that I have never expressed interest in?

I do not care what people in my Local Area are watching, just do not care. So why do you insist on telling me?

Most important of all; when do you plan to listen to your customers and bring back the "Releasing This Week" page. This was really the only page I used. I do not care about the top 100.

I often feel like Netflix is being held together by dental floss and chewing gum. There is no one thing, just the overall experience I've had over the past few years.... There's the rampant bugginess and, more significantly, the long long long time it takes for Netflix to fix (sometimes minor) bugs... There's the fact that the site goes down all the time for "scheduled maintenance." Other major web sites I use haven't gone down at all in recent memory (for instance, Amazon). There's the fact that even the "Netflix unavailable" site will have errors. There's the fact that feedback is solicited in this forum, and then Netflix never bothers to respond after over 200 posts. I feel for you guys working at Netflix... based on the outward signs, you guys must be seriously under-staffed, under-worked, and in a permanent, scrambling state of crisis.

Anonymous said...

...i meant OVER-worked. and i really do feel bad for you guys, it must be frustrating.

Anonymous said...

How about no deleting of posts that don't have any foul language or other inappropriate comment? All I said was that Netflix seems under-staffed.

Anonymous said...

my bad, it's here on the next page

What has happened to Netflix's absolutely astounding service??? Since approximately 3/1/08 it seems to have deteriorated on a snowballing scale. Unanswered emails (which is why I left Blockbuster), slower turn-a-round and delivery, receiving very few of top choices in Queque. With more consumer choices now such as Redbox, this is not what I would expect.

Amy Darnell said...

I don't like the changes. I just want the old Netflix back! I don't like that they've changed the new release section. Blockbuster still uses the "releasing this week" screen that breaks down all of the new films being released that week. It takes forever to find the newest releases. I know that a lot of these switches are 'customized' to me, but that's the joy of watching movies. You can love one film and then hate another one of the same genre. That's why I'm giving Blockbuster another chance.

Bad changes. Bad Netflix. Bad.

Like the new format, but see that there is still no way (or obvious way) to contact customer service by email. Am I just missing it?

I was wondering when Netflix would get around to making the instant viewing compatible with Mozilla browsers?

Anonymous said...

I abolutely hate this new format; the new releases are shown according to your recommendations for me; how do you know what I want when I hardly ever ate? And where is the option to see what will be released in the coming weeks? Where is the option for retaining the old view?

Anonymous said...

NEW RELEASES SECTION SHOULD BE UPDATED WEEKLY. FORGET THE DAMN "TAILORED TO ME" CRAP.

HAVE A "NEW THIS WEEK" SECTION LIKE ALL OTHER VIDEO OUTLETS FOR GOD'S SAKE.

I END UP HAVING TO GO TO BLOCKBUSTER ONLINE TO SEE WHAT'S COME OUT THIS WEEK.

SEEMS LOGICAL.

Why not spend more time on making netflix more compatible and less time messing with the "look". Honestly why can't netflix come out with a stand-alone player that windows, mac, and linux users can use without relying on microcrap IE. All this DRM junk is a waste of time. If it can be seen or heard it can and some idiot will copy it. Just give us movie links we can play in our own players or a stand-alone player.

I don't care for the new format. Don't like the wide screen and don't like all the empty space. What was the point? What I would like to see is a way to sort my queue by genre or star rating to help me make a new choices of what I might like to see next.

You have gutted our ability to really see the new releases and upcoming releases. I now have to rely on OTHER sites to see what's new out. Why Why why!

GIZMODO is reporting that you are going to increase prices for bluray movies. Go ahead, do it, and see how fast I cancel my subscription in favor of renting on Apple TV.

I am on the unlimited 2 movie for $13.99. Offer to increase to 3 movies unlimited @ a time for additional .30
I click on offer and says cost of new plan is $16.99 + Tax doesn't 13.99 + .30 = $14.29 + tax. What kind of scam is this or maybe I just don't understand Netflix math

let me choose for myself!

What happened to all of my movie recommendations? I'd rated 359 movies as of yesterday--I should have between 1900 and 2000 recommendations. Instead, I have zero! If this is a result of the change, I'm NOT happy.

instant watching is broken.. we were asked to upgrade our windows media component and now the movies no longer work correctly (ie. what was working fine for the past two months - no longer works)

Netflix to Raise Blu-ray Rental Fees???????? During a conference call Monday, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings commented that his company would raise rental fees later this year for those customers who rent Blu-ray movies. Since the high definition format was introduced, Netflix has been providing Blu-ray rentals at no additional fee to their customers. Now that the format war is over, and rentals are increasing, Hastings feels that it is necessary to charge a premium for high definition rentals.

He commented, "Purchasing Blu-ray DVDs costs more, both at retail and wholesale, than standard definition DVDs. Consumers are used to paying more for high-definition content."

No word if rival rental powerhouse Blockbuster would also be raising rental fees for high definition movies. If Blockbuster decides to keep fees lower than Netflix, it could radically shift momentum towards the second place online movie renter.

Plz, Tell me this is a lie????? you can read this at www.blu-ray.com

First, I am a middle aged single guy with no kids, and EVERY time I come to Netflix one of the slider bars is "Movies for children 8-10 years old" with a notation that these are "movies you'll love." Your recommendations which are supposedly based on my rental habits and ratings are becoming more ridiculous and useless by the day for me. Bottom line is that it just clutters up my screen with junk. Either give me the option to subscribe to slider themes I am interested in, or allow me to go back to the old version. Forcing a bunch of junk on me and telling me I'm supposed to love it is condescending and patronizing.

Because your recommendations are so off base, I assume they are not really based on my preferences, but because your database shows these are movies that you have high stock in and no one rents them. So you think I am so stupid that I can be duped into taking a lousy OLD childrens movie (cartoon) because you keep telling me I'll love it. That is disappointing you have such low opinions of your customers.

Second, bring back the Releasing This Week page. This is not rocket science. You offered it for years. Every competitor of yours including GreenCine.com and BlockBuster.com have it ON THIER FRONT PAGE!

Someone from high up in the company needs to step in and FIRE everyone of these designers, programmers, and web middle managers for the simple reason that they see their customers as morons and refuse to listen or even respond.

What happened to the "New Release" section. I can't find it anymore, and that is what I always use to find movies to add to my list. Not a happy user.

Bring back the "Releasing This Week" page NOW! I have brought dozens of new subscribers to netflix over the past three years. Now I tell everyone to go anywhere BUT netflix. I will continue doing so until netflix again earns my trust and starts treating us like valuable customers and not cash cows they can abuse.

WHAT the heck, my personalizations are gone, I can't even tell what movie is coming out when as the "new releases" are not uhm, new. I do not enjoy this new design. And I'm pretty sure a good majority will agree with me. Stop trying to get flashy, Netflix is better than blockbuster online, it just takes a little while for people to realize this. As for the rest of us, stop trying to please the sheep and please those that actually USE netflix.

Don said...

I used to be able to look at ALL new releases as opposed to just the new releases you recommend. I really don't know where you're coming from with these recommendations, I think they suck - many are not "new" at all. I'd like to be able to look through all the new releases and decide for myself what I would like to see.

Anonymous said...

Wow! Cranky people!

I like the white space - can't stand crowded pages. My suggestions are:

1. Make it easier to find my reviews

2. Allow me to sort by title in the View Instantly section. Drives me nuts to have to click through to find the right season, for example, of a TV series. If they could be sorted alpha by title, it would be easy to watch them in order. If I do a search to find a specific series and click on the results, I don't have the option of picking the episode. My workaround is to go to my viewing history and click on the latest of that title but that only works within the season.

LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

the thing is, you can make all the changes you want but if you do not serve the Mac market your totally losing out on allot of potential movie downloads...Make It Work - for Mac!

For all of you complaining about the New Releases page, it is still there! It has just moved! Simply click on the Friends & Community tab, click on Blog, and click on DVDs Releasing This Week. So, please quit complaining!

I would like to know why it is Netflix does not carry enough copies of a given film or movie. At least ten of the titles in my queue have 'a very long wait' next to them.

Blockbuster is looking better by the day.

Cordless Drill said...

This is pathetic... you aren't going to update this blog anymore? It's a shame Michael left this site. I never knew yall'd give up on something so easily, when so many improvements still NEED to be made to Netflix.com.

A separate queue for Watch Now-- one of my wishes for 2008!!! Yes! Thanks also for reinstating the total # of movies in queue to reflect saved movies also. Not sure why that disappeared for a few months but very happy it's back.

Dave in Milwaukee said...

Glad to see I'm not crazy... looks like other people agree with my critique of the new format. I've never been so confused by a regression in intuitive design.

The presentation of new releases is just painful, akin to waiting for a web page load on a dial-up modem - click next, wait for a couple movies to scroll, click next, wait for a couple more to come up. That type of design causes seizures of impatience for people who are used to scanning text quickly. And if I want to go back to something that looked interesting, I've got no reference point.

Hey Netflix - people like options. Give us the chance to customize the home page. It's that simple. I keep looking for the button to turn off those stupid friend messages / welcome notes when I first login. I cringe in pain every time I get a javascript popup, after I add a movie to my queue. Just let me turn all the new functionality off under my profile, show me simple lists, and I'll be happy.

Anonymous said...

I was on hold for 3 months and came back today, but not for long!! They created a stupid home page and I was NOT interested in any one of the movies they put on it. NOT one!
But the movies stay there anyway...They must be pushing movies that they want to rent for some reason.
The site is much harder to navigate and a lot of old garbage movies come up.
I hate it and will not be a customer much longer.

TP said...

I like the wider page, but really wish you'd stop trying to force-feed us movies -- now bigger, bolder, and more in-our-face than ever -- that some maths genius has determined we'd like. I mean, let's get real here : it's in no way, shape or form a 'browse page', just another 'movies you'll love' page. Sorry, make that : MOVIES YOU'LL LOVE!!!!.

Ideally, a browse page would provide imaginative and varied ways to explore the full extent of that massive inventory of yours, as if one were wandering around a wonderfully stocked book store, rather than just having 26 titles thrust in our face every time we visited. That's just ANNOYING!

mom/linda said...

Why are you folks bothering with this? You know there is no intention to follow up with any of it!
Anyone else out there fed up with putting a movie in your queue BEFORE it is even released in the theaters and then being on the ridiculously "LONG WAIT" list, supposedly no more than 14 days?? What a joke. Two of the movies I am waiting for are now at Wal-Mart at a discounted price!
Quit wasting time and money trying to jazz up your website and purchase enough movies to serve your customers! Another suggestion: train your customer support personnel to actually perform customer service rather than read off of computerized prompts. Rude and unacceptable behavior so many times. You are losing customers with this long long long long wait bit you have us believing. Ridiculous. Everyone: check out the Blockbuster program: better deals, better selection, turn around time is instant, and the wait times are short.

mom/linda said...

AMAZING to see so many other folks with the same problems re: wait time. Let's get this through our heads that NETFLIX doesn't care!!
I, too, have my queue messed with often, even though the totally unreliable and untrained customer service reps. say it is impossible. I offered to send a photo I took of my queue on a Monday with the changes Netflix made on Tuesday and they weren't interested.

And the deal about not being Mac compatible! Ridiculous again. The promise in the promotion of having "quick turnover", "access to the latest movies" "instant viewing"......joke!

When I hold the cursor over a film, I can no longer read the information about that film. The blurb comes up, but it is on a transparent layer, so that I cannot distinguish the letters from the original layer. I agree with others who complain that every web change makes the site less user friendly. I would also add that I miss the New This Week feature.

Ken said...

I wish I could sort by columns (for example, by star rating) in my rental history

Anonymous said...

Don't like the new format, and the fact that the really interesting new releases are hidden someplace. I have to Google on new DVD releases to find movies that I want to put on my queue.

LaFaye said...

I was generally happier with the old format, but the most distressing change for me is the fact that I cannot read the blurb that pops up when I pass the cursor over a film. I can see that the information is there, but the layer is transparent, and all the print under it is visible and competes. It is easier to click on the movie and bring up the screen than to try to decipher the popup. Please return to a popup that is NOT transparent.

Here's an idea: how about me (the customer) telling you (the service provider) what I like, instead of NF trying to push all this crap down my throat?>>

I hate the new format! I'm thinking of canceling my account because of this crap. I used to like NF, but, it would seem they don't like us. No respect for the customer. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the site as it was when I joined, but, apparently you haven't heard of the "if it aint broke..." rule. Apparently you decided to fix it till it was broken. Thanks for F-ing nothing!

I find it strange that after now 262 comments, and most of them being against the changes made, Netflix has done nothing to change things...

Here's what I do - I to to HOLLYWOOD VIDEO website to see the new releases for the week then come back here and type in the name, add it to the que and move on. I don't have the time to plow through Netflix website anymore - more important things to do.

Is there a way to browse without box images? It's slow (even on high-speed dsl) to look only at a couple dozen movies on a screen, and then have to load a new page. Can't I get a list, for example, of all view-now tv shows on one screen?
