Facebook

This seems to come up periodically here, so i thought i'd just raise the level of discussion a notch: Facebook. How many of you Netflix members are also frequent users of Facebook, and for those of you who are -- what would you think would be the most important features of a Netflix-Facebook application? If it could only do one thing, what would that be? And if I had all the time and resources in the world, what would an idealized tool do? (I'll post a poll to see how many of you use MySpace, Facebook, et al). If you have ideas, I want to hear 'em.

  1. Automatically sort facebook friends by ratings similarity.

There's already a facebook Movies app but I'm not about to go enter all my ratings... again.

  2. I would like to be able to find which facebook friends use netflix and be able to share when I send/receive movies in my news feed.

  3. There are at least two facebook netflix apps that I know of and have tried, and neither one is exceptionally good. It just pulls some movies from the RSS feeds and shows them. It'd be nice if people could click on something in the netflix feed and basically send me a netflix friendship request. In some anonymous manner, of course. What if I don't want the clicker to be my friend or see my full list of movies?

Also, it'd be nice if you could have a movie in your list that you don't want your friends/feeds to know you have in the list. Maybe you're embarrassed, maybe you're using it as research for some surprise for a friend, who knows.

  4. For an idea, how about the latest movie I rented.

I want to recommend a better comment system for this blog. I think you should try Intense Debate. I found them on www.politicalgrind.com as they were using them. It would be so much better than this horrible blogger commenting system.

  5. I don't use any social sites but would be interested in having an option somewhere between Friend and Fave, whereby you could dialog anonymously with members about their reviews or ratings; i.e. keep it strictly moviecentric rather than social. If they're not interested, fair enough - they can simply choose to ignore the note. Or maybe there could be a 'do not disturb' button?

Actually, they already have that feature, they just keep it very well hidden. Click on the Community tab up top, then click the Friends & Faves tab on the right, then go back up top and click Movie Privacy. Then you can select to keep any movie you have rated, watched or in your queue sort of invisible to some people on occasion.

  7. @Mike. Fun as those flame war sites are to read, this one is primarily just a suggestion box to help (or more likely confuse!) Netflix as to how to fine-tune the community features. For across-the-aisle shouting matches I'd look elsewhere.

  8. Regarding the poll: I am a Facebook & MySpace user. I'd like an app that shows the last 5 movies I returned and rated. This list would more accurately describe my recent viewing activity (versus just 5 most recently rated or reviewed movies). Movies on this list would be linked to the privacy settings from the main Netflix page-- so my last 5 returned/rated would not include movies I had already hidden from Netflix friends.

  9. I'd love to have a Facebook-style activity log for my Netflix activity. That way, my friends could see what I've recently watched, returned, rated, reviewed, etc.

In other words, an all-in-one RSS feed.

I already use a third-party Netflix/Facebook application to show my queue.

  11. Maybe an overlay when you bring your mouse over the movies listed on your Facebook page displaying your Netflick score and the notes you have left.

Or maybe some feature which scans all your friend's favorite movies and suggests movies to you.

  12. I just browsed over to this blog because I'm trying to find a widget so that I can display my Netflix queue on my (vox) blog. This post seems highly relevant to my quest :-)

In answer to your question, then, I don't use either Facebook or MySpace with any regularity. I have a blog, though, and would like exactly was @Eleni suggested: a widget that would show my last few rented movies, or just what I currently have out (limited by my privacy settings, of course).

  13. How long has the poll been up? I noticed it a bit after noon and it already over 700 votes, but it has picked up less than 100 votes in the 11 hours since then.

That seems a bit odd to me. I'm just wondering if maybe Michael did something odd creating the poll and it started off with a bunch of votes. Did anyone see it this morning when it had a lot less votes?

    ReplyDelete
  14. baff: I remember seeing the same poll a couple months ago - maybe he just resurrected it?

  15. As long as people can only vote once does it matter when that vote is, or was, cast?

  16. I'd like to see a Netflix Facebook app that's similar to flixter's that allows me to compare my movie ratings to my friends' ratings. I tried to use the flixter app once, but since there's no good way to copy my Netflix ratings over to it, I quickly gave up.

What would be even nicer (since this is a wish list ;) ) is the ability to compare ratings between Netflix and flixter users.

  17. I would like some cut and paste code for my myspace movies section that scrolls through my favorite movies, and that takes them to my netflix profile if they click on it. I would also like a link for them to request to be my friend if they are a netflix member.

  18. The Poll: Yes, i ran it in the summer for a week or so... pulled it... and re-posted it now that it is more relevant. It had about 700 votes when i retired it. But i don't think the data is compromised by re-introducing it.

  19. I'm a myspace user- i like that i can keep my profile private and only allow people I know or approve to view my profile.

    I deleted my facebook account.

  20. Facebook is probably the only site I check with more regularity than Netflix. I'd welcome any sort of app. I like peter davis's idea of showing Facebook friend's that are on Netflix, and what your similarities are.

  21. My friends and I are all myspace users but not all my friends are on friendster. It would be cool to post on my page which movies I currently have at home and for it to update automatically when I get new stuff.

  22. I use Facebook somewhat regularly and would love to see a simple app that shows me which of my Facebook friends also use Netflix and have an option to connect as friends on Netflix.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Who cares about (un)social networking. Netflix would be more productive by integrating the "watch now" feature into more browsers other than IE. A Media Center plugin would be great for queue management, as would the ability to use "Watch Now" in MC.

    ReplyDelete
  24. i would want a facebook app to show me what's new and awesome and have an "add" feature or better yet, a redirect "PLAY" feature!!! please do this and i will giggle with delight until my dying day.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've never checked out Facebook. I do use Myspace though. I would be totally willing to use any applications you guys decide on. I love netflix!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. would be cool to see what my friends are renting, just a quick top 20 list of the most highly rated movies, with the name of my friend connected to it, so I know who's renting what - that way I get to decide based on 2 fators, a general public rating and my rating of my friend's taste!

  27. I’m really too much of a newbie in blogging or social networks to know exactly what I would want, I’m sure. If I find the time to develop a blog, and I have been thinking about it, it would probably be here on Blogger. In which case I’d like neat and easy ways to link to my profile from my blog… and most importantly to link from my Netflix pages out to my blog. Netflix logo graphics might be a nice thing to provide for the links. If graphics are already provided I haven’t run across them yet.

If I could get Netflix to post my reviews to my blog for me, that would be really great. Is this possible? Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think feeds do what I’m looking for in this case.

If anyone is already doing some cool stuff involving Netflix maybe you could post the link here so we could take a peek? Might give us some new ideas.

How about this… a chance to earn extra one-time rentals if we send Netflix new members from our blogs, etc? This could be some pretty powerful advertising we’d be providing after all…

Build up enough extra rentals and I could plan that movie marathon party I’ve been dreaming of, all without interrupting the normal flow of my queue. Or Netflix could bump us up a tier for free for a couple of months. Who knows? Maybe people would get hooked on the extra movies sitting around and start paying in order to keep them.

And thinking of marathons… this is an off-topic idea someone might want to pass on to someone. I might actually pay to get extra one-time rentals from time to time if the price were reasonable. Right now, if I want a particular movie, or set of movies from Netflix, at a particular time, I have to rent those movies in advance and let them just sit there. When I had an out of town guest I really wanted a couple particular movies on hand, but that meant that I had to give up my normal viewing nights during much of the prior week so I could be sure to have those movies on the weekend. If instead I could order extra one-time rentals I could really have a lot of fun with that. I can’t afford a $10.00 price jump to get a two-movie subscription increase every month, don’t really need it every day like that. But I could afford a smaller one-time charge for extra movies every so-often, especially if the prices were competitive with the local video store. Your library holds a lot of things I just can’t get in a store. And you know I’ll return the movie because I’m already a trusted customer, there would be no added risk in that respect.

    Well… that’s all I got…

  28. I'd like to be able to display the Movies I've rated. Right now there is no RSS feed for that.

  29. Why not just allow non-members to surf the site? What could be better advertising?, and it would save you having to set up all these isolated links to the outside world.

  30. Members could then post an url on their social site of preference that takes people directly to their profile.

  31. Hello, I've been relocated due to the firestorm in San Diego. I am trying to report that my DVD has been destroyed by the fire (I saw the mailbox by my house and it' s destroyed), however you don't have a comments section on the webpage for adding what happened to the DVD.

I only have a cell phone so we're not supposed to be using the line. I cannot call the website.

Please contact me at delorm57@gmail.com if you are a Netflix employee who can help me out.

  33. I just want to be able to integrate my ratings with Flixter. I have over 1300 ratings on Netflix and can't get them out. Sucks!

  34. I am using one of the current facebook/netflix apps. it just shows what i have at home. If there was a facebook app that would post my Netflix reviews and put them in my Facebook feed, I'd be much more likely to write Netflix reviews - especially if I could write those reviews from Facebook.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would love to have a link that shows my highest-rated movies--my 'favorites' as it were.

This could be as simple as creating an RSS feed for user's 4- and 5-star rated movies; but a cooler way to do it would actually show the cover art of the movie. Kind of like Last.FM's widget for music.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I would be very happy with the ability to simly post my netflix recently viewed and queue AND the ability to see my friends' queue and recently viewed.

Putting the Netflix queue on Facebook and sharing it with friends would be great. Movie trivia challenge games can be fun!

  41. @Philly

Thanks for the fabulously concise endorsement! In Michael's latest post he speaks of an anonymous path to friendship via an HTML invite, which would seem to get us halfway there. But (a) how do you get the invite to a particular person? And (b) it sure sounds like a lot of work just to have a brief exchange of ideas/death threats over a movie.

But it's encouraging to see that Netflix sees the need for some kind of minimal, anonymous, movie-related and above all mutually agreed contact between members without having to head off to a whole other site.

  42. I absolutely think that Netflix should officially create a facebook link, as Flixter is very problematic. Netflix should do this quickly!

  43. I just want my friends to be able to see a list of the movies that i've been watching lately.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think the best feature would be to have the similarity between other people. They already have something similar to this, but I'm not going to go through hundreds of movies like i have with netflix. It would be more accurate in this sense because it would have a whole index of the movies you've watched to make a better similarity between people.

If there was a super feature it'd have to have a link to the friends queue, automatically make all your friends with facebook friends on your netflix, have a easier review system on facebook and make adding a movie to your queue through netflix possible.

  45. I've been hoping for a Facebook app. I like the GoodReads app - it shows a couple of books I'm currently reading, and a couple that I've read recently, along with my ratings of each. I have to choose to update it on my Facebook profile. If the app had a comparison feature so that I could rank myself against my friends by getting them to add the app, I probably wouldn't use it, as I rarely add apps that require that my friends have the same app. I like those that simply post my info without my friends having to get actively involved.

  47. Put that silly Flickster Movies widget to shame. Merge as much as possible the senses of community and friends. Do the movie match up thing, see what my friends are watching, let them see what I'm watching. Suggest stuff. You guys are sitting on a social gold mine, so start digging already! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. I want my Facebook friends to see what I am watching and how I rate my movies. In addition, a movie trivia feature (something comparative to ilike's set up) would be awesome - I spend way to many hours on that trying to beat my little brothers score. Also, it would be sweet if you could add a feature that allows friends to tag movie suggestions onto profiles and store those suggestion in a separate queue on our netflix pages.

  49. University social "video" networkingOctober 31, 2007 at 7:04 PM

Noticed that Blockbuster is now offering a 25% discount to Movielink to those with .edu addresses. This is an interesting issue from a social networking point of view. Facebook took off in the university environment, so if Blockbuster finds a way to develop a loyal cadre of university students for its movielink service, it could undercut Netflix's nascent and promising efforts. Worth keeping an eye on...

  51. 1. Go crazy ... Create an API similar to the one facebook has where a user could develop his/her own applications. They could integrate into Windows Live, Facebook, Myspace (when it becomes available), Windows Mobile, etc. Model this after the Facebook API.

    2. Facebook app to allow other users to make movie recommendations for you. These then show up on your NetFlix account.

    3. Facebook app to show movies current in your queue.

    4. Facebook app to show your "top movies". User could select these from the NetFlix website.
