Hey, all. I'm Steve, responsible for the instant watching feature on our site.
First, I just wanted to say thanks for all of the comments and feedback you've already posted. I've read everything, and look forward to hearing more of your ideas.
Next, as my first post, I wanted to answer a couple of your questions about Mac, Firefox and beyond.
Bottom line: we're committed to giving all of our members access to our instant watching feature. Both Mac and Firefox are on the list. Also, many of you have seen our public statements that we're bringing Netflix to the TV in 2008. I can't say anything more specific about that, except to note how excited I am about what we're working on.
In the meantime, here's a little more regarding Mac and Firefox. While Boot Camp and virtualization programs work great for watching movies instantly on an Intel Mac, I know that's not the solution we all want (ps - I've been a Mac user since the days of the 128K Mac, and many of us at Netflix use them at work and at home.) So here's the deal:
A key issue for delivering movies online is that the studios require use of DRM (Digital Rights Management) to protect titles. And that's our holdup for the Mac - there's not yet a studio-sanctioned, publicly-available Mac DRM solution (Apple doesn't license theirs). I can promise you that, when an approved solution becomes available for the Mac, we'll be there. I'll also say that Silverlight 1.1 looks like a promising candidate - but that its DRM isn't likely to be fully available until 2008.
Firefox for Windows is a different issue, and one we hope to address by early 2008. An upcoming version of our movie viewer will support Firefox as well as some new features, and I'll post more on that as we get closer to deployment.
Another comment I hear frequently is about the selection of titles available right now for instant watching. Two things on that:
First, the majority of the studios’ content is committed to traditional broadcast channels for the next several years. As a result, Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Walmart.com, and everyone else delivering movies online have access to far less content than what’s available on DVD. That said, we’re working closely with the studios to expand content for electronic delivery, and even today we have more than any other electronic delivery service I'm aware of. We're continually adding new choices - we're up to over 4,500 movies and TV episodes this week - and that growth will accelerate into next year.
Also, besides some really great movies and shows from the full catalog, we're starting to receive newer content and exclusives. The Office was a big hit with our viewers over the past month or so. Pan's Labyrinth and several other recent releases will be out this month, with more to come this fall. We have a special preview of Californication, a new Showtime series with David Duchovny, available right now (btw - adults only recommended for that one). There will be lots more where those came from.
So, we hear you: get you to the Mac, Firefox, and the TV. Get you more great movies and TV shows. We're listening, and we're taking action. Thanks, everyone. Keep the comments and questions coming, and let me know what you'd like to hear more about.

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 490 of 490 Newer› Newest»Agreed. It's now mid 2008, and been 9 months since the original comment about compatibility issues.
Why doesn't Netflix support Flash like every other video site out there right now? IF they did, they'd resolve their cross platform support.
Half way through 2008... Can something happen for instant viewing on mac???
ALmost daily there is at least a 5-15 minute wait while aquiring digital rights. Service unavailable for 3 hours yesterday, not at least another hour a day.
Why do you claim 24/7 when you have so frequent unvailablitiy?
Right when I started to like Netflix again I learn no Linux...
Ubuntu for life!
Steve,
I have been promised and sweet talked no more.
I have had it.
I'm through and I'll have you know that I have been an extremely happy customer for the last four years.
I have the 4 discs at a time plan, and I love getting all the movies I could ever need.
However I have been promised for too long, that I too one day would get to watch movies anytime, away from my mailing address.
I do lots of traveling and it would be nice to get to watch movies while I was away.
All us Mac users have heard for over a year is "coming soon..." or "in early 2008 we will..."
It has finely gotten the better of me, and I will be cancel my subscription as soon as I am done posting.
I am tried of paying the same price as the 80% of the computer using public that uses windows does.
This is not fair, and we should not have to bear the burden of someone else's fortune.
We have lost all hope, because you have disappeared. This issue is dying, and it looks as it will never be resolved.
Thats why I am getting out now.
You guys are not even trying to keep us anymore.
goodbye,
- Faithful mac user
Faithful Mac user: I wonder if you wouldn't mind relating your experience by starting a discussion over at getsatisfaction [dot] com. I like the way you put it, and I wouldn't mind helping to publicize this issue so that we can perhaps get a response from Netflix. I'm a Mac user and former Netflix subscriber who also got tired of waiting for Mac support. It's a shame that they don't have at least a straightforward response to this request, but I'd like to try and help get one.
Hello,
I am not sure if this has been figured out or commented on yet, but i have got Netflix's View now feature working in Firefox just fine. ( I do not know if you have implemented that compatibility yet, but I have found a way regardless)
It is a simple Firefox plug in called "IE Tab"
Check it out, works great!
I hope this helps some one.
IE Tab didn't work for me.
It's Freakin June 2008!!! When will we be able to watch on Firefox???!!!
I was able to get IETAB to work with FIREFOX 3 and on a Windows XP box view Netflix videos.
However, this doesn't solve the problem for us Linux and Mac users, as IETAB only works as an addon for Windows machines. Basically, it runs IE inside of Firefox (Now there's a stupid use of resources).
So, yet another evening at home, waiting for Netflix to resolve their issues, when, realistically, it could be solved as easily as moving to flash streaming.
Is there any update on this?
It is now June, 2008, and still there is no sign of support for something other than that toy browser on that toy operating system. Obviously this post was a bait and switch. All Netflix users who are not Windows users should threaten to leave the site and close their accounts until support for something other than IE is available.
Terry Gardner wrote: "All Netflix users who are not Windows users should threaten to leave the site and close their accounts until support for something other than IE is available"
Terry, great idea!
I started a pledgebank page for it:
http://www.pledgebank.com/LetMeWatchNow
If anyone has a better idea to publicize and organize a mass Netflix customer walk-out, let everyone know.
What about linux support?? I hate having to reboot into windows just to watch my netflix (no dual core unfortunately).
Linux --
Ditto requesting support here.
Still waiting for firefox ... and it's mid-2008 now.
I'd love to see Linux support
Please add Linux support as soon as possible.
You guys just suck. Support Mac already...
I think the instand viewing queue is a great addition but I wish that you did not have to add movies to both queues, instant and regular, independently. For instance, I have 29 instant viewable movies on my instant queue, but there eight more (total of 37) on my main queue. Is there a way you could just have the instant queue pick up everything on the main one?
Also Steve, with all the Mac users posting you hate mails on this blog, I want to let you know that I am a VERY happy PC user. I love the instant viewing. I love the site. I am totally adicted and can't wait to see how far up or down my reviewer rank goes every week. Oh and my husband has a Mac and would love to stream on his desktop but has no problem streaming on my PC instead. Sorry you have to deal with so many crybaby pseudo-tekkie smartass types on this blog. Most of us (the 90% that have PCs) are just fine. ;)
I've been waiting too, and will not subscribe to netflix until mac and linux instant watching is supported. seems like empty promises.
Color me a conspiracy theorist, but I get the feeling once Netflix instant viewing is rolled out for XBox 360, within 4-6 months it'll be available for Mac.
I just hit the blue "Play" button on Netflix, to be painfully reminded that there's still no Mac support. I remembered this post though...
I'm confounded that Hulu can stream TONS of big name studio content, both TV shows and Movies, to a Mac with no issues. They can even do 480p and HD resolutions.
I just don't understand what the hold up is. I'm excited about the Roku and Xbox announcements, good for the company, but Mac support has been an issue long before these other services came to light.
If Hulu keeps beating you silly with their superior implementation, I don't see how you're going to keep many of your Mac customers if they ramp up the speed at which they add content.
Hey, it's been almost a year since this has been posted. Isn't there some solution for streaming Netflix on a mac yet?
I mean it's not worth it for me to buy emulation software just for this feature.
I thought it'd be great to switch back to netflix (from blockbuster) because of the online viewing. Stupidly, I had forgotten that, as a Linux user, your service probably wouldn't be (and sadly is not) available to me. After I burn up the trial month, I'll just have to stick with blockbuster.
It's 2008! Any updates?
Um...mid 2008 and STILL no Firefox support? Firefox is the one that had over a million downloads in 1 day, so my guess is A LOT OF PEOPLE USE IT!!!!! Where is the support you promised??????
From the rumors I've been hearing the reason they got the XBox deal is that Microsoft slathered up netflix's palm with a lot of money...meaning no Non-windows non-M$ support. So I bet they will string us along for a good while before they finally have to announce a merger, or a partnership or some kind of something.
I bet the next plan of action is going to be no XP users next as they roll out WMP 12 for DirectX 10 only.
I've already cut my subscription down ...they are giving me MORE of a reason to cancel it and join the pirates that you hear about so often.
What a surprise, get a big deal with Microsoft, screw over users of Open Source. I'd never have guessed Microsoft would have you do that. Gee, total surprise here. I wonder how the movie industry will react to you asking 20% of your customers to go pirate the movie if they want to watch instantly?
Again another user for linux..... Come on guys. DRM is not the most sophisticated software in the world and building a basic Firefox solution can't be that difficult. Someone mentioned over a year ago.... Feel free to ask the community for help!
Linux please! Even a WINE-emulated method...
I use the Linux Operating system as my main pc and feel I am being left out of the watch now. The comments seem to be about Windows and Mac and I would guess by now with the success of the eee and Ubuntu that there are probably more Linux users than Mac users now. Please find a way for Linux users to also utilize the watch now service. Thank You.
Hi Steve. Thanks for making instant viewing possible! Like many others here I'd like Linux support as well.
Also, what about subtitle support? I've got slight hearing loss so it would definitely help--sometimes I just can't turn up the volume (like if it's midnight).
=)
Have you guys thought of creating your *own* media player for this? Incorporating your own DRM, perhaps? Waiting for Apple (or, god forbid, the studios) to come up with a DRM solution is an exercise in futility. Popes will change waiting for them to get off their collective butts and do something...
I just needed to pop on to tell you that you are my new hero! I am a returning netflix customer & love the added instant watching addition. I had no idea how useful it would be until going on vacation with my toddler who needed to get her daily dose of The Wiggles - what a lifesaver! I cannot thank you enough. Big big hugs to you & your genius!
Where is the linux support? Not even a mention of it? I have been a netflix member since 2006 and I have been using ubuntu a good chunk longer than that. How about some sort of java based player so we can all use it?
I am a new Netflix subscriber, and I was let down when I found out that your "Watch Instantly" feature was for users who only ran Windows, used Internet Explorer, and used windows media player. This is a very sad requirement list for a service that you so advertise as one your best features. There is virtually no room for users to choose an alternative OS, browser or media player! I personally feel that this strict requirement list is unacceptable in today's society of diverse computer users. Unfortunately, I do not meet any of your software requirements to use this feature.
I'd like to advocate that your company widen this service's support for more operating systems, media players and browsers. Until then, I'll be telling my friends that use linux and OS X to reconsider subscribing to Netflix. And I'll be rethinking to stay with Netflix myself when my trial period ends.
Thanks for your time
--
dave fine
I canceled my Netflix account today. Since Blockbuster went out and purchased Microsoft-DRM-infected MovieLink, rather than give them a try, I'll wait till one of them (or a new competitor) wakes up and smells the open, digital-restriction-free future. I think I'll read more books...
P.S. Mac & Linux users: Don't hold your breath for InstantWatch support. As another reader pointed out in a comment on another post, Netflix' CEO is on Microsoft's board:
http://news.cnet.com/Microsoft-adds-Netflix-CEO-to-board-of-directors/2110-1014_3-6170596.html
Also, don't forget: Netflix InstantWatch is Defective By Design
Well Steve...
It has been a full year since your first post (See your original post of August 9, 2007) regarding Mac OSX and Netlifx Watch Instantly.
You said you are responsible for Netflix Watch Innstantly. A year is a very long time when it comes to technology, patches, upgrades and code. Well?
What have you done to resolve this?
Your hints were nothing more than a marketing ploy to keep us as customers, right?
How about being honest with yourself and the readers herein, please? Is that too much to ask?
Steve - of the many reasons we haven't heard from you for over a year, I hope it's that you've been fired. You're incompetent and dishonest. The very least you could do was tell us that you're in bed with Microsoft and have no intention of supporting Mac.
I'm done. Sub cancelled.
Roseblue2, I think it is unfair that you refer to posters on here as "crybabies." Truth be told, most of us have kept our accounts and been patient, but it's now been a year. It's great that you have a PC and MAC in your home, but maybe some of us can't afford to support two computers or simply choose not to. Yes, it is our choice to have a Mac instead of PC, but I pay the same amount as you do for this service and get much less out of it. Wouldn't you complain if the roles were reversed?
What really bothers me is the constant bombardment that reminds me that I don't have that functionality. They keep upgrading the queue, like when they added a "Watch Instantly" tab to show what I could be watching on my computer if I didn't have a Mac. And now, I will actually get recommendations that declare something like "You don't have to wait. YOU CAN WATCH THIS NOW!" But alas, I cannot.
When they started these upgrades, they knew of the limitations, so why not give us a way to turn off this functionality so that we're not reminded every day that everyone else is getting more for their money than we ever can.
BTW, I don't know if this is accurate or not since Steve chooses not to respond anymore, but I had to call customer service and the girl there said that they had received information that a Mac solution was coming by the end of the year. She was very nice and I'm sure she was passing along what she had been told, but I'll believe it when I see it.
Oh, I was told that I could buy some kind of device and watch the movies on my TV. Which sounds like a bit of a scam to me.
Thats great in all but what about Linux Users? You might want to think about the future here and take a look at the growing number of us.
Now I will have to actually pay money to either get a copy of that crappy OS called Vista? or pay even more money to get a new machine, a MAC?
Sweet Netflix Sweet
if your gunna do something don't do it half @$$. Try and support more systems across the board on this one or your going be left in the dust via Apple's iTunes.
Well Looks like I am going to cancel my service with Netflix due to the fact that I can't watch instantly. The mail is a bit slow.
I just talked with Customer Service, she told me i needed to have a PC. What did I tell her I have a Personal Computer; one that's running linux, she had know idea what the hell i was talking about. why can't you figure out DRM for linux. I can understand Apple not playing fair but Linux? Come on no excuse.
If your going to release a product release it to the masses don't discriminate and leave those who do have a "PC" out in the cold, just not running windows.
I didn't read the entire thread (which is huge) so I apologize if this is redundant, but browser headers can lie. Linux users in particular have many reasons to use Firefox's user agent switcher plug-in, usually to pretend to be using IE on Windows.
What can I say... Netflix is a huge disappointment. We had the 4 movie at a time and went down to 2 at a time. Now I might just cancel altogether... I've patiently waited a WHOLE YEAR to see if they would support Mac and Firefox, but what's the point, they are not going to do it... what a disappointment in this day and age, when technology allows you to do just about anything you want....
I too have been waiting patiently for the Windows Only world of Netflix Instant Watch to disappear. When it first came out, remember sending in a request that Linux support be added and was told that it was being considered. The way it looks is that it's not happening.
I've been a subscriber to Netflix for 5 years, and up until the Instant Watch fiasco, I was pretty happy. Now, with the economy tightening, I've got to look at getting rid of extra expenses. Netflix looks like one of them. Maybe being able to instantly watch stuff instead of waiting for it to arrive would keep me going, maybe not. At the rate Linux support is not being implemented, I doubt we will ever know.
Long ago I came to this same comment about failure to support Macs and Linux and thought, well gee, you'd think NetFlix could maybe pioneer some cross-platform DRM if that is a requirement. That was ages ago. Now I return to see the same comment and I simply don't buy it anymore.
The BBC, Fancast, and Hulu are all streaming mainstream movies to the browser and they all work with Macs and Firefox and even Linux. How is it that all of these services have managed to find DRM that works for them, but Netflix is still unable? If Netflix cannot be an innovator any more can you at least be competent at copying what others have already done. Forget Silverlight. Just stuff the movies into Flash video and let us watch them already.
I'd love to take advantage of my Netflix instant viewing capabilities on my computer, my Wii, my Dish Network VIP 722 or my Web-enabled DVD player. Do I expect Netflix to support all of these? No. But one of them doesn't seem too inappropriate a demand. Apparently, if you've chosen a company other than Microsoft as your computer and/or videogame console, you're screwed. The Roku is reasonably priced, but I've already got enough components in my home theater.
Respect your customers, Netflix.
That we were promised a solution more than a year ago makes it all the more unbelievable.
Now that their shipping problems have entered the fourth day, Netflix no longer gives me the option to see my obviously-delayed queue on the front page. Instead, they further insult me by replacing it with a bright blue bar claiming that I can watch movies instantly when in fact their service still doesn't work with any browser other than Internet Explorer.
These delays are annoying, but they're not bad enough to make me consider switching to Microsoft's lousy, insecure, resource-hogging internet browser.
Like many of the Netflix users, or soon to be ex-Netflix users here, I am just as disappointed with the delay of DVDs being sent to my home. As I am sure many have only stumbled upon to this posting because of the desperate solution to watch an Instant Movie from the Netflix subscription we've paid for.
It is noble of Netflix to be returning the credit of our subscription due to this delay, but I believe that this wouldn't have been such a big problem if there were signs shown of some progress with supporting Mac OSX for Instant Movies.
I only hope that someone from the Netflix corporation will be reading this. Or it would defeat the purpose of having this blog.
Netflix has had many loyal subscribers for its DVDs. But with the option of Instant Movies only available to PCs, be prepared to loose some subscribers when it comes to delays like these, and having to options offered.
I've been with netflix for probably 7 or 8 years now... it has been so long I've forgotten! I'm still sad that i can't watch movies on my mac tho. I just finally convinced my wife to get a mac and she's now upset that she can't watch movies instantly on it! Thanks netflix - another black mark on my name :)
dd if=/dev/dvd of=dvd.iso bs=2048
Now I am an honest person, and I don't do this as a matter of course (you should see my fully bought-and-paid-for movie collection), but there are a myriad of tools out there to do the same thing on windows.
My home runs exclusively on Linux and MacOS. Why penalize us with online distribution when you know how easy it is for us to do the above with DVD's sent to us through the mail?
Why penalize us honest folks when there are workarounds for the DRM that you have on your current net service even on Windows? http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/08/workaround-enables-netflix-watch-now-titles-to-be-decrypted-s/
2008 is on its way out. Quote: "We will be expanding the platforms supported by the Netflix Movie Viewer over the coming year." referring to Mac and Firefox in 2008. I'm just a casual user and it seems quite obvious that no one is happy including me or I wouldn't write this.
IE is bottom of the barrel
Firefox and Opera are preferred.
XP is preferred over Vista at this point. (by most not all)
Linux over Windows. (all linux users)
Even though I am not a Mac user, Netflix should at least offer reduced fees to those who can't use their viewer.
This from a computer novice, most people I know at least use a different browser and many are using linux and some have both linux and Windows=IE because Microsoft wants to own everyone.
Has there been one satified comment? I haven't read it here.
Netflix keep your word and deliver what you promised. Please.
I use Linux and I would like Watch Instantly to work on Linux.
Other problem I have with watch instantly, is that it do not provide the caption closed (or subtitle) on non-foreign movies. I am deaf and I am getting tired of watching only the foreign movies! :(
Why isn't Instant watch compatible to Firefox? The download speed on Internet explorer is horrible. I have high speed cable internet. I have to sit and wait constantly, or get a not responding message on IE every time I load my queue. And yes I have the latest version of IE. And don't even think of trying to get me to install Vista. That OS is horrible. Get with the times Netflix. Use Firefox!!!
another linux user here. i subscribe to your service and would like to be able to use all the features. please get this working for linux because i know several people who would use it if you would support linux.

Hi,
I would like to add my voice to those requesting linux support. I don't want to add the roku box to my setup as I want to use my pc. I have heard the roku is open-source friendly...now maybe it is netflix's turn. I am happy with the service, but am getting a little impatient. I'll get tivo before roku. Not trying to whine, but just letting you know what a customer is thinking.
p.s. I am not some hardcore linux geek. I just got annoyed with windows so I installed linux.
I sure hope you will consider enabling Intant for Linux.
Keeping your service restricted to one OS - and one that only kept their market share by the grace of a corrupt Justice Department at that - seems silly.
On Demand is THE killer app for the coming integrated home systems. Your competitors will look back and thank you for making the mistakes they profited from, I'm sure...but I hope they DON'T overtake you. Netflix is an excellent, responsive service.
HI! since there are several hundred comments here already, this may have been mentioned. if so, i apologize for repeating. otherwise:
there are several instant watching movies with glitches or flaws in the content.
one, for example, being "Romance and Rejection"
http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/Romance_and_Rejection/60024840?trkid=440460
which is missing the last 14 minutes. (kinda critical, i think all can agree)...
a feature that would allow viewers/members to report things like that would be INCREDIBLY helpful. it took me an hour tonight to locate this blog and this thread as a means to get the message across. :)
but then, a way to send comments directly to Netflix would be handy, also..
:))
ultimately, tho, at least this is here, and it's a great resource! now that i've found out about it, i think i'll be back often! :)

Please Supply Linux Support!!!
A faithful netflx user.....
Well, here it is a year later and still nothing has been done. In fact, I currently can't even watch movies on my PC - keep getting a variety of error messages and it appears that either WMP is not able to find the stream or I need to upgrade my video card driver. I have the latest driver installed and it is just a few months old so I don't think it is my problem. As for Firefox, still not available. However, they are really pushing the devices to get the video to TVs with the promise of (someday?) even letting us watch movies thru the XBOX 360s that we already own. Someday is the key phrase here. So what if there are already millions of customers using Firefox, they have their priorities. Meantime, I'm going to find out exactly why I can't view the Netflix movies on my PC even though I watch movies from other sources all the time.
With Microsoft's advent of their new Bloatware OS Vista, some of us are turning to linux and the FIREFOX browser. I, personally would really like to use my netflix instant viewing capability in that scenario.
Thanks in advance,
Bluesman99
I called netflix because of a billing problem and asked about instant watching on mac - I was told 'yes, it's coming soon.'
Without any specifics, that just sounds like the usual blather to keep me paying for a lesser service than microsoft platform users.
I was also told I could spend another hundred dollars on a box - but I don't have a TV to plug it in to, so that's of no help whatsoever.
Besides which, how long is a box like that going to last before it's obsolete and ends up as landfill in a third world country? - poisoning their groundwater etc etc.
We have enough gadgets already - all we need is for netflix to sort their software out - or rather their management team.
At this point, even the most credulous must be beginning to suspect there's some sort of kickback arrangement going on between netflix and microsoft.
class action suit please.
When will Instant view be available for us Mac users?! We're a growing demographic and it's not fair for us to pay the same price as PC users without being able to use all the same features. If you can't get it enabled soon, at least give us a discount!!
Geez you MAC users are a bunch of cry babies.
"Oh no.... I cant view Netflix on my MAC... I might as well hang myself"
Get a life!
You should have bought a real computer (PC) instead of some over priced, over marketed, useless paperweight.
Go play with your ipods and iphones !
Oh, please... if Netflix didn't work on Vista, PC users would be complaining even more.
So looking back at this post, the firefox for early 08 sounds like bullshit.
What's the news? It's more than a year later.
All DRM comments aside I have a feeling this has more to do with the netflix partnership with microsoft. It is a great partnership to deliver watch instantly on the microsoft XBOX 360. Due to the partnership happening I'm willing to bet anything to do with mac will be postponed until after the watch instantly has been released for xbox..
microsoft = fail.
Thanks
-J
I'm a mac user- I really only got my netflix account for the instant view... mail is slow.
bottom line... get it so macs can play movies instantly or you're gonna lose the rest of the mac community like you lost me.
*going back to netflix.com to delete my account and watch something on hulu*
The idea of watching movies on the net is cool. However, the technology Netflix chooses is probably the worst option. I would prefer to be able to watch the movies on Linux. Now, not only I need Windos, I also need IE7, Windows Media Player and who knows what. Took me 3-4 hours just to went through all updates and sh**t Microsoft requires every time I boot Windows.
People of Netflix, for mother of God, please switch to a platform independant technology (so it works on Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.) Don't make bad decisions.
If Blockbusteer offers beter technology (read this as non-Microsoft), I will swithc in an instant.
still waiting for a mac update... I plan on subscribing once this is possible.
So amazon video on demand now has a pc/mac ability. My guess that DRM is sanctioned since well..they have a large collection of first rate movies and tv shows..
so I hope we'll be hearing from netflix soon.
If not amazon will have the upper hand now.
and please add some decent movies..these b grade instant viewing films suck..
*shrug*
-current netflix subscriber who hopes that this will be the turn around for mac users
Linux! Linux! Linux! I will never never never ever use Windows or Internet Explorer. Period.
I talked to customer service tonight (Sep 29, '08) and was told that Apple would allow them to use their DRM and a Mac solution would be available before the end of 2008. She also sad that if Apple changes their mind we might have to wait till 2009. She says Netflix has nothing to do with the wait and suggest we contact Apple instead.
Well, its 2008...........Are we there yet?
Another blog post please.
Linux Please!
The new Silverlight doesn't work with older Macs - only INTEL. No more previews for movies. Without previews how can one choose a movie that they don't know about? How many thousands of people do you think have not upgraded to an Intel machine? I hope that when the Watch Instantly issue for Mac gets solved, that it will play on ALL Macs. And why can't the new Silverlight? is it so much better? to cut out all of us older Mac users?
I'm suspending my subscription after this month as I just found that I can no longer see PREVIEWs since I have a NON INTEL MAC now why would you go and do a thing like that? Bad enough there's no Watch Instantly for Mac - and when there IS, will that too be only for INTEL MACS? Talk about narrowing your market. Otherwise, I've loved my Netflix services.
From macrumors:
The blog post also confirms that Mac support for streaming video will arrive by the end of the year:
"And, for all of you Mac users (of which I am one) we’ve been busy working getting a solution that will allow you to watch instantly on your Mac. So hang in there - we’ll have something for you by the end of the year."
Here's the link to the netflix post:
http://blog.netflix.com/2008/10/new-content-to-watch-instantly.html
You can't license a Mac DRM? Boo-hoo... develop your own one then. Plus, OSX is based off BSD which is highly similar to Linux. You could develop a DRM system that worked on both OSX, Linux and other *nix variants at the same time. Then YOU could be the ones licensing the DRM rights. Instant revenue stream. I can't believe that after a year you guys have not learned that you're shooting yourselves in the foot by not supporting alternative platforms.
I would love to see this come to Firefox (Windows and/or Ubuntu Linux).
Not being able to watch those instant movies on Netflix on my Mac is one of the reasons I left Netflix. You just feel like you're not getting your money's worth.
i am tempted to go back, and if Netflix made streaming movies available for Mac, this would probably seal the deal for me.
for now Im stuck with the crappy selection on Itunes.
How about LINUX!!!!!!
It has been a year since this post was written and still no Firefox support. If Netflix can't get firefox compatibility, then I guess I should probably give up waiting for Linux options. It is a real shame that they have such a bond with Microsoft.
When I am traveling in Europe, why can't I watch instantly on my Laptop?
"Watching Instantly is Not Available Outside the US"
appears in response to my request.
Why????
I am on of these who wants Netflix on Linux. This is the only reason why I still struggle with Vista. Please help.
